Alomomola as a counter

Alomomola @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Wish
- Protect
- Scald
- Toxic

It's never 2HKOd by any of Krookodile's moves after rocks, and can heal off damage done with Wish/Protect. This along with Regenerator allows it to switch in on CB Krookodile multiple times throughout a match, even if it gets its Leftovers knocked off somewhere along the way. Alomomola eventually KOs or cripples with Scald, if Krookodile stays in for some reason.

252+ Atk Choice Band Krookodile Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Alomomola: 208-246 (38.9 - 46%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Choice Band Krookodile Superpower vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Hippowdon: 129-152 (30.7 - 36.1%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
4 Atk Hippowdon Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Krookodile: 144-169 (43.5 - 51%) -- 4.7% chance to 2HKO

All those calcs were from Adamant Krook, and jolly would do even less. Anyways, Hippo can come in, take any two hits from Krook, and proceed to Slack Off any damage, even tanking two max damage Earthquakes after SR. Pretty good counter if I do say so.

I'm taking Granbull as a counter since its been well over 6 hours since sleepless reserved it.

Granbull @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 48 Atk / 212 Def

Pardon me for updating so late this week...

Top 3 Checks/Counters to Choice Band Krookodile have been chosen (in no specific order):

Top 3 Counters:

Chesnaught - canasian
Granbull - Sean B. (Sleepless did reserve it and failed to post within 6 hours, so Sean B. legally was able to take this and post it. Sleepless' post was edited about 11 minutes after. Sorry brah.)
Alomomola - sparktrain

Top 3 Checks:

Shaymin - Thisbemyalt
Hydreigon - Sage of the 6
Virizion - King UU

Also congrats Sean B, you've earned a Leaderboard Point!

Next week's Victim is a mon who during the pre-Blissey meta was difficult to straight-up counter, simply because its underused (hahaha) Attack stat got a slight buff, enabling it to use a certain move to pick its targets...

Set name: Mixed Nidoking
name: Mixed
move 1: Earth Power
move 2: Sludge Wave
move 3: Ice Beam / Thunderbolt
move 4: Superpower / Megahorn / Sucker Punch
ability: Sheer Force
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
nature: Naive / Rash

OP will be updated accordingly.

Cress is an ez counter.

Cresselia @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 104 Spdef / 152 Def
Bold Nature
- Psyshock
- Moonlight
- Lunar Dance
- Thunder Wave/Moonblast

Great support mon for bulky offense teams that takes next to nothing from Nidoking's stabs or coverage moves and 2hkos with psyshock.

4 Atk Life Orb Nidoking Megahorn vs. 252 HP / 152+ Def Cresselia: 159-187 (35.8 - 42.1%) -- 87.2% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Cresselia Psyshock vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Nidoking: 168-200 (55.2 - 65.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Last move is entirely down to preference - Twave support is always a cool thing for bulky offense to have, whereas moonblast leaves it not entirely defenseless against Krook. EVs are geared to give you lots of sick mixed bulk, lefties for neat passive recovery.

Blastoise @ Blastoisinite

EVs: 140 HP / 252 SpA / 116 Spe
Modest Nature
- Scald/Water Pulse/Hydro Pump
- Dark Pulse
- Rapid Spin
- Aura Sphere/Ice Beam/Dragon Pulse
Mega Stoise is a great check to Nidoking for two reasons. The first is that, as all checks can, Stoise can live a hit and Ohko king. The second reason is that Blastoise is literally the most used mon in UU. Since stall is really picking up hazard stacking can be very useful. Well luckily we have Stoise the best spinner relative to its tier in all of Pokemon. This means running stoise not only gives you a viable check but also a mon who can be a great member regardless of the opponents team. Oh also his EV spread is made to speed creep the most common Queen set so you also beat queen.

252+ SpA Mega Blastoise Scald vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Nidoking in Rain: 564-666 (185.5 - 219%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Kyurem as a check

Kyurem @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 56 HP / 236 SpA / 216 Spe
Timid Nature
- Substitute
- Roost
- Ice Beam
- Earth Power

Kyurem in general makes a great check to Nidoking since it can switch in on any of its moves (even with rocks up) and easily OHKO back with Ice Beam. The SubRoost variant in particular can heal off damage done with Roost, making it a near counter. The EVs let Kyurem set up 101 HP subs and outpace positive natured base 90s (and by extension Naive Nidoking), with the rest put in SpA. The only reason I didn't list this as a counter is because Kyurem tends to get worn down due to its SR weakness. Despite this, Kyurem is an excellent check to Nidoking.
Nidoking vs. Kyurem
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Sludge Wave vs. 56 HP / 0 SpD Kyurem: 238-281 (58.7 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Bronzong as a counter

Bronzong @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP/128 Def/128 SDef
Relaxed Nature
IV's: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Toxic

With immunity to both of Nidoking's STAB moves, Bronzong doesn't even need significant investment in its special bulk to take multiple hits from Nidoking.

Bronzong can check any Nidoking set with full Defense or Special Defense investment, but this spread manages to always avoid 3hko's from any move listed in the set besides Sucker Punch (which can't land 3 times on Bronzong anyway).

252 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 128 SpD Bronzong: 99-117 (29.2 - 34.6%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
4 Atk Life Orb Nidoking Sucker Punch vs. 252 HP / 128+ Def Bronzong: 112-133 (33.1 - 39.3%) -- 66.9% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
4 Atk Life Orb Nidoking Superpower vs. 252 HP / 128+ Def Bronzong: 82-97 (24.2 - 28.6%) -- 0.9% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Flygon as check

Flygon @ Choice Scarf
Evs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Nature: Jolly / Hasty
Ability: Levitate
Moves:
-Outrage
-Earthquake
-Stone Edge / Fire Blast
-U-turn

Flygon is a natural check to Nidoking seeing as it can come in moderately safely and comfortably Nidoking with its STAB Earthquake. Also, with a bit of prior damage, Outrage can be used to ease prediction on levitating 'mons. U-turn can also be used on predicted switches to nab momentum.

252 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Flygon: 118-140 (39.2 - 46.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

Cryogonal as a check

Freeze Time
(Cryogonal) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 HP / 140 SpA / 20 SpD / 96 Spe
Timid Nature
- Ice Beam
- Recover
- Rapid Spin
- Freeze-Dry

So basically Cryogonal just ruins Nidoking's day. The snowflake comes in on any attack except Superpower, and can then freeze Nidoking solid with Ice Beam. Also it walls any non physical or sucker punch variant because of the faster recover and if the Nidoking happens to run hazards they can be spun away.

252 SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 20 SpD Cryogonal: 152-179 (44.1 - 52%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Umbreon @ Leftovers
Ability: Synchronize
EVs: 252 HP/100 Def/156 SpD
Calm Nature
- Foul Play
- Protect
- Wish
- Heal Bell/Baton Pass

Calculations & Analysis:
4 Atk Life Orb Nidoking Megahorn/Superpower vs. 252 HP / 100 Def Umbreon: 192-229 (48.7 - 58.1%) -- 58.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
  • With protect + wish, can outstall all megahorns, even on a switch in. Bar 3 crits in a row, Nidoking can do nothing in this situation. Superpower loses its capability to hurt Umbreon.

252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Sludge Wave vs. 252 HP / 156+ SpD Umbreon: 140-165 (35.5 - 41.8%) -- 85% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
  • In this scenario, Umbreon does the Wish-->Protect-->Foul Play circular play until Nidoking dies. Nidoking would require continuous crits in a row to render umbreon useless.
0- Atk Umbreon Foul Play vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Nidoking: 130-154 (42.7 - 50.6%) -- 44.1% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
  • Self-explanatory; it eventually falls to foul play.

Overall Analysis:
There's only one instance where Nidoking can get the upper hand, and that is if it predicts the entry of Umbreon while stealth rocks are up, and gets a crit on the Megahorn/Superpower. This then puts umbreon in KO range from a second attack. However, this scenario is both circumstantial, and shows the sheer desperation in attempting to defeat Umbreon.

reserving SpDef Vaporeon

edit :
Presenting Vaporeon as counter :

Vaporeon @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 24 Def / 232 SpD
Calm Nature
- Scald
- Wish
- Protect
- Heal Bell/Baton Pass/Roar

SpDef Vaporeon serves as as both a cleric and a special wall that stops Hydreigon, Chandelure and both Nidoroyals. Able to switch on a rash Nidoking's Thunderbolt and survive the 2hko without Protect while able to Wish the health back and retaliate with Scald, which has a chance to 1hko back without hazards. The Spread is to ensure the 3hko on Vap, while the rest Evs could be put into SpD to make it bulkier, SpA to increase Scald's chances to 1hko or speed to creep other Vaporeon/Umbreon/etc.

Relevant Calcs :
0 SpA Vaporeon Scald vs. 4 HP / 0- SpD Nidoking: 266-314 (87.5 - 103.2%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 232+ SpD Vaporeon: 205-244 (44.1 - 52.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

reserving SpD Gligar, awesome defensive check minus ice beam (which isnt as common anymore)

View attachment 27004
Gligar @ Eviolite
Ability: Hyper Cutter
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Earth Power Earthquake
- Defog
- Roost
- U-turn

Basically the easy way to do this is switch in on a obvious STAB move. Scout for Ice Beam, if it has it go to said check or counter, if not, proceed to beat the living crap out of nidoking here. You always 2hko, none of his other moves even 4HKO you besides Ice Beam, which honestly isnt as common with the myriad of options people have found for king now, including Fire Blast (Gligar tanks it) and rocks (Gligar defogs it) U-turn for momentum, Stealth Rocks if you need them. Very simple. Also cockblocks Mega Ampharos extremely hard. Just avoid Knock Offs or you don't tank special hits well.

252+ SpA Life Orb Sheer Force Nidoking Ice Beam vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Gligar: 348-411 (104.5 - 123.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO (reason its a check .cri)

RIP Nidoking

0 Atk Gligar Earthquake vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Nidoking: 212-252 (69.7 - 82.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
