ASB VIABILITY RANKINGS

Welcome to the official ASB Viability Ranking thread. If you have visited the Viability Ranking thread for any other tier, you should be familiar with the concept of this thread - we will organise the Pokémon in our tier into ranks, varying on how good they are. You are encouraged to post your thoughts on where Pokémon should be ranked. Please note that each section is going to be in alphabetical order.

We currently have no "council" except for the mods - the people who have proven to be consistently good, quality posters in this thread (even those with differing opinions from the masses!) will be considered to help make the final calls.

In order to cut down on shit-posting, please do not bandwagon posts. Unless you have new or different experiences to share, you are defending a nomination, or if the nomination has not been discussed for ~3 days, try to avoid repeating the same information someone else said before you.

Disclaimer: Please note, these rankings are just for fun and are a subjective ranking of what the general strongest Pokémon in ASB are. Pokémon strength is much closer in ASB than in competitive Pokémon, and Pokémon in the D or C ranks will still often have excellent chances against Pokémon in the A and even S ranks. Do not let this discourage you from purchasing any Pokémon you like as aside from the truly terrible, any Pokémon can be powerful in ASB.

--------------------

PRELIMINARY RANKINGS

S Rank
Reserved for Pokémon with dominating offensive, defensive, balanced, or support capabilities, almost always some combination of the above. These Pokémon will win 1v1 matchups most of the time and can take on more than one opponent in the right scenario. Also the home of Pokémon who can easily perform multiple roles effectively, increasing their versatility and unpredictability. If the Pokémon in this rank have any flaws, those flaws are thoroughly mitigated by their substantial strengths.
  • Gallade (Mega)
  • Gardevoir (Mega)
  • Gengar (Mega)
  • Sableye

A Rank
Reserved for Pokémon with capabilities that excel in one of the aforementioned categories. These Pokémon will win the majority of 1v1 matchups but suffer flaws that prevent them from dominating consistently. These Pokémon may be lacking in one quality or another that prevents them from succeeding against certain opponents.

Pokémon in this category have flaws that prevent them from doing their job every time and can be considered to win an average number of matchups. Such Pokemon are often type matchup dependent. Pokémon who are partially outperformed by a Pokémon in A or S Rank, but are otherwise very dangerous, may also fall into this category.

E Rank
E is for "Egregious". If you are using these Pokémon, you are doing so for fun. Unless you are an ASB god these Pokémon will lose more often than not (though Pokémon listed here are usually not that egregious). Pokémon may also be listed here because they are outclassed by so many Pokémon.

U Rank
U is for Untested. These are Pokémon that are viable in ASB that simply have not been ranked yet.
  • Every unreleased legend / released legend that has not been captured
  • Anything else that is not listed here.

Remember to back up your arguments and that normal rules apply here. Have fun!

D-
Butterfree: Outclassed, very minor niche of being a good Rare Candy user.
Dedenne: Outclassed, bad typing, has a good Speed tier and can use Everstone well, better off using it in raids.
Emolga: Very effective with Everstone but very frail.
Lumineon: Mostly outclassed Water-type who can Defog if needed, can pivot and can be an effective Storm Drain user in Doubles+.
Mightyena: Outclassed Dark-type that can use Rare Candy well.
Mothim: Very effective with Everstone but very frail.
Shedinja: Nearly everything has a Super Effective move to nail it with but it can use Rare Candy well and limits the opponent's attacking options.
Spinda: Mighty with Everstone, Contrary + Superpower, permanent +1 Accuracy and good when confused, but huge item control bait.
Unown: Manipulatable Hidden Powers but cannot do much else other than spam Hidden Power. Works well with Everstone though.

E
Dustox: Shield Dust + Compoundeyes, bad Rare Candy user, uhhh...
Gourgeist-L: Basically Gourgeist with 15 less speed, absolutely no reason to use it over other Gourgeist forms.
Kricketune: Sticky Web setter with Taunt and terrible coverage, can use Rare Candy well, but let down by bad non-HP and Attack stats.
Ledian: Outclassed Bug/Flying-type that is only really good at being a bad special wall.
Luvdisc: Fastest Water-type Heal Pulse user, absolutely outclassed otherwise.
Masquerain: Outclassed Bug/Flying-type that cannot even use Rare Candy well.
Minun: Only good if paired with Plusle in Doubles+.
Pachirisu: Outclassed Electric-type.
Parasect: Terrible typing, slow, can at least use Rare Candy well.
Phione: Outclassed Water-type that has an incredibly minor niche as an Everstone using Water-type.
Plusle: Only good if paired with Minun in Doubles+.
Wobbuffet: Only direct-damaging option is Struggle, no movepool, shut down by Taunt and competent substitutions.
Wormadam-G: Outclassed, terrible typing, bad Rare Candy user.

Okay I have not changed anything from before. Have at it now! You can bring up your arguments from the last thread or whatever.

Things I need to do:
  • Look over this list and add and remove things
  • Split Rotom Formes and whatnot
  • Update in general
  • Get a matchup chart up or something
  • Anything I missed

Yeah you can post now.

Primeape for S+ plz

I assume Sableye being listed as Mega is a mistake? Yes it is; Fixed. ~Its_A_Random

PS: I really should try to get Ape and a few other hipster mons out of rank E..

Was thinking maybe Charizard-X for S, wins a ton of 1v1 matchups, has an excellent special attack for things like Rhydon or MAggron, goes 1v1 or wins with basically everything in S and A ranks except COlo and Strata

Nominating Talonflame.

Talonflame: D Rank.

The only pokemon with a priority damaging evasive move right now. With Fly at +1 Evasive and -1 Strike priority. Having Priority healing ability, through Roost, is also pretty useful in clutch situations. It is predominantly a Doubles pokemon as can be seen through its competitive usage in Doubles. It learns Taunt, Flare Blitz and Solar Beam, that provides decent coverage in the doubles format and with priority Tailwind, Quick Guard and Snatch, it acts as a good offensive support to other offense oriented pokemon.
One on One it cannot take on pokemon that are not weak to its stabs. But can setup, do some damage or reduce the amount of damage taken before it switches out with U-turn.
It can be shutdown in a lot of ways though, as rocks are its doom and Fly has a lot of counters in moves that can hit through its evasive stage.
Overall a decent pokemon to consider for D Rank despite its flaws, as its niche covers for those flaws and is a real good addition to any doubles oriented team. It can even wield a Choice Band for those crazy situations where you would need some extra power on a priority attack to land a critical KO.

p.s: I am a little biased towards Fire/Flying types ~_~

Got to lead by example I suppose.

Delcatty: C+ Rank

Anyone actually remember this thing and what it does? Well back in late 2012/early 2013 this thing got a lot of hype in #capasb (and then justified after a few battles showcasing it) and for a good reason. Imagine an Adamant Delcatty. Imagine it using Double-Edge which has 12 BAP. Now throw Normalize into the equation. 16 BAP STAB there. Now throw a Moon Stone into the mix. You now have an 18 BAP Double-Edge off Rank 5 Attack, with STAB thrown into the mix and no recoil. Basically a powerful albeit forgotten Normal spammer with some powerful nuking possibilities. That is not all. It comes with Fake Out which is comes in at a hefty 10 BAP after boosts. It also has various assorted moves and when Normalize is toggled, it has some nice coverage from Sucker Punch to Play Rough to Zen Headbutt. On the support side it is not too shabby with Wonder Skin making taunting it unreliable, Foresight helping it bypass any Ghost-type that wanted to ruin its day, Thunder Wave to paralyse them speed freaks, Heal Bell, Wish and Baton Pass for support, and several other things. This thing's ability to pack a punch with neutral attacks and decent support means it is more than worthy of a ranking. The major issue with it is when it comes across any Rock- or Steel-type with a decent Defence stat, who basically walls it and shoehorns it into not having Normalize which makes it outclassed. Ditto for any Ghost-type who can circumvent Foresight in time and get lucky. Baby steps though so I am going to nominate it for C+ for now. Surely some Delcatty user can back me up here!

Also going to renominate everything here.

EDIT: As far as the unranked CAP's are concerned, I am thinking Malaconda in D, Cawmodore in D, and Volkraken in B-. Thoughts?

Delcatty. I remember the talks where we found that Delcatty could outdamage and KO a Krilowatt (Factoring in the HP Gap) with Double-Edge and a Fake Out thrown in for good measure. Delcatty could be moved into B-, owing to the fact that is VERY type dependant.

Renominating the following changes.

Aerodactyl: C+ Rank Aerodactyl's mega form is underwhelming, and other items such as Power Herb, Hard Stone, and Old Amber outclass it in many situations, as they make its STABS stronger (or Pressure stronger in Old Amber's case). Mega-Aerodactyl is really only better if you need to outspeed crazy fast things like Accelgor or Mega-Gengar, or if you plan on using coverage moves a lot. So, they should be in the same rank as they fill slightly different niches for the same mon.

Rhyperior: C Rank Rhydon and Rhyperior are the same thing, except Rhyperior gets an item and doesn't fear Knock Off as much. If anything, buffed Protector means Rhyperior>Rhydon. Also Rhyperior gets Rock Wrecker.

this post is useful

Rampardos: B Rank
At 110 HP, Rampardos can take a few hits. Similar Rock-Types suffer from the nasty double weak disease. Rampardos? No double weaknesses. But it does have Neutral Rank 7 Atk and positive nature Rank 4 SpA. It has a varied movepool which is only made better by its offensives. Focus Punch, Earthquake, Iron Tail, Stone Edge, Avalanche, Head smash, Elemental Punches, Iron Head, and Zen Headbutt are amongst its physical options. And its Special repetoire consists of Fire Blast, Thunder, Blizzard, Dragon Pulse, Focus Blast, and more reliable options. And nearly all of its high powered attacks are further boosts by Sheer Force. And if you grab its signature item of Skull Fossil, all moves boosted by Sheer Force become stronger and keep their secondary effect. Excluding pokemon whose entire purpose is to take a hit and shrug it off like it was nothing (Carracosta, Forretress, Ferrothorn, etc), there are very few pokemon that Rampardos cannot handle. Also, have I mentioned Mold Breaker? That kind of screws over pokemon with defensive abilities, turning this offensive nightmare into the thing that nightmares have nightmares about.

Small update.

Added Volkraken to B Rank (B- was a conservative ranking, would like more opinions).
Added Delcatty to B- Rank.
Added Floette-E to C- Rank.
Added Cawmodore to D Rank.
Added Malaconda to D Rank.
Added Phione to E Rank (Outclassed, sucks, etc).
Added Wobbuffet to E Rank.
Moved Rotom to U Rank and split it up into it and its five formes. Would like opinions on each.
Moved Aerodactyl to C+ Rank (Agree with Leethoof).
Moved Rhyperior to C Rank (Agree with Leethoof though Rhydon has the niche of taking neutral and resisted hits better).

Have not done much else at the moment. Yes I am listing FE mons in E Rank (and I am going to rewrite that section I guess). idc how superfluous it is but at least people will not think we have not thought about it and ask questions.

Keep them coming (I have not considered anything not listed here yet and will look over them soon).

EDIT: Rewrote E Rank to mean Egregious. Though mons listed there are usually not bad to the point of being egregious, I just needed something starting with E that meant bad hahaha.

Meloetta-Aria, Meloetta-Pirouette: B/B+ Rank

Meloetta's Aria and Pirouette forms are both powerhouses in their own way. Adapting herself to any match-up is a great trait to have and she can could do that with an attack, what else can you ask? The ability to switch forms with an attack that has 20% chance of putting multiple targets to sleep, open great potential to turn around match-ups or rounds in your favor. With a Everstone in her Aria form she has 110/3/3/6/6/80 stats, whereas in her Pirouette form she has 110/6/3/3/3/128, before nature boosts, and each of her forms check the counters of her other form which is a great way to deal with any unfavorable match-ups. She has great tools in Hyper Voice, Psychic attacks, Shadow Ball, Close Combat, Focus Blast, U-Turn, Shadow Ball, Knock Off, Perish Song and other nifty tricks of a psychic type while having decent coverage with her physical attacks as well. She cannot be statused without consequences either as unresisted stab Facade from her Pirouette form will definitely hurt (17 BAP ignoring ranks). She can most certainly turn any unfavorable situation to her advantage and the best part is that her form can change when ever you want. She also has Dazzling Gleam to take care of those pesky dual types that would block her form change otherwise.
The things that bring her down are also the things that work in her favor. She needs a action to change forms, and her form is not retained if she switches out, which makes her prone to being phased out. Her coverage though wide, is not extensive, as is the case with most pseudo legendaries. Serene Grace is a good ability but doesn't boost the secondary effects of many moves, except Relic Song, Electric attacks, Shadow Ball, Zen Headbutt and Rock Smash. Ghosts deny her the opportunity to switch her form, which could cripple her niche as Dark attacks from Ghost pokemon like Sableye, Kitsunoh, Revenankh, Golurk, Spritomb and the likes, are her doom. Pokemon like Drapion who are immune to her psychic attacks and take neutral damage from her other attacks could also keep her under check. Which most certainly means that she should carry Hidden Power Ground on cover against them.

But overall, she has some great power and potential as showcased in SubwayJ's battles and I would like him to add more to these points later.

*Wrote this as Meloetta is the Queen of RU right now and I like her swag ~_~
*Moving Meloetta's nomination from C+ to B/B+, factoring in the points mentioned by Avnomke.

Mel is somewhere in B imo, since she has a lot of good matchups, and can easily turn many matchups in her favor. While yes, she does not like ghost-types, she can do some stuff back to them with Shadow Ball and Knock Off (and other things, depending on the secondary typing). The fact that she can do some stuff to her counters means that she doesn't deserve to fall into C rank, where pokemon that get shut down by their counters reside. Meloetta doesn't "have crippling flaws that prevents her from consistently executing her strategy" and is not "completely eclipsed by a Pokémon in the above ranks".

Rotom-W for B+/A-: Rotom doesn't exactly have a good offensive movepool--basically just Electric, Ghost, Dark, Signal Beam, Hidden Power, and whatever forme move it gets (it doesn't even get Psychic smh). But its defensive typing is literal god-tier with a 2x weakness to the rare Grass (and taking relatively low damage from Grass knot helps), and Levitate helps to patch its 2x weakness to Ground. It also has a great disruptive movepool, consisting of pretty much everything anyone would ever want (except Soak and Encore, get on it GameFreak). Still, I'd be hesitant to call it A-, but I could conceivably see it there.

Mowtom

I'm truly still meta, enjoy this acronym!

I would like to propose Escavalier for C/C+

Escavalier's stats are incredible. When equipped with a Link Cable, they are 100/6/5/2/5/20 before a nature boost, and this is without Overcoat's -1 BAP on everything factored in. It has moves to make use of these stats, including obvious STAB, Drill Run, Dark moves, Counter, Endure, Quick Guard, and Iron Defense. However, its Bug/Steel typing, while leaving it with only one weakness and a bunch of resistances, also gives it a 4x weakness to Fire, which even Overcoat and a Rank 5 defense can't cover, considering that Fire is a great offensive type and many Pokemon get Flamethrower/Fire Blast. Its movepool is also pretty small, at only 57 moves. The huge fire weakness is the main "crippling flaw," but it seems on par with other Pokemon with huge weaknesses to common types, such as Gliscor, Weavile, or Volcarona.

Added Luvdisc (It sucks even in ASB) and Gourgeist-L (Absolutely outclassed by the other three sizes in nearly every way) to E Rank. I will probably add more to that place as I find them.

Nominating Cloyster for B/B-

Skill Link strongth. Having a 15 BAP incredibly spammable Ice- and Rock-type move with a 41% chance of flinching the opponent is almost enough to destroy a surprising amount of threats without much trouble, but the fact that is actually pretty bulky on the physical side means that if that doesn't work you're not fucked. However, it's SpD is kind of crap, even though immunity to crits and -1 BAP from all incoming attacks definitely helps. Unfortunately it doesn't have much coverage, but Water/Ice/Rock/Normal/Poison hits mostly everything anyway. Furthermore, access to Spikes and Toxic Spikes majorly punishes things that try to stall against it, and though it doesn't get Roar or Whirlwind, it does have Teleport to get out and possibly force a counter-switch.

tl;dr its a lot more of an offensive powerhouse than it seems, and it doesn't have any crippling weaknesses (it can certainly fight back against special whatever SE-types) despite having major flaws, so B

Primeape for C+/B-

With a solid speed tier, great attack stat (When factoring Rare Candy) and great offensive movepool (Learning physical moves of every single type but Fairy, in fact), Ape manages to be a hard hitting, fast threat. However, that is not all, as Ape also boasts some great utility moves, including but not limited to U-Turn, Bide and Encore, which can effortessly punish an opponent he struggles against or prepare for a team-mate to set-up. Although he loves Rare Candy, Ape is slighty less vulnerable to the likes of Knock Off than other item-reliant pokemon, thanks to his speed and the presence of moves such as Encore, Taunt and Dig.
While it faces heavy competition from other speedy, frail fighting types (Such as Infernape), Ape's coverage and strengths shouldnt be overlooked.

There is really not much to say here, Primeape is a glass-cannon with an amazing movepool that suits both an offensive and ''annoyance'' playstyle, which allows him to defeat a surprinsigly high amount of opponents and neutralize the ones he can not with a well-timed Encore/Taunt.
He is not perfect, but overral, Ape has yet to legitimately ''fail'' me.

Spinda for D Tier

Although Spinda can be extremely powerful under the right circustances and has a solid movepool, it isnt particulary hard to shut-down.

Have not made any changes at the moment since I want to populate the list with mons but some additions:

Meloetta and Nidoqueen (Gender means it is not really outclassed) to B.
Lanturn and Swoobat to C+.
Gourgeist, Gourgeist-S and Gourgeist-XL to C-.
Emolga, Simipour, Hitmontop and Talonflame to D.
Pachirisu to E.

I will look at more additions including Escavalier and Cloyster as well as some changes sooner or later.

I will be honest here, i am not too sold on Nidoqueen's rank. It isnt a bad pokemon, but it just feels too outclassed by Nidoking, since it is slower and has less Attack. The gender isnt even that useful, since most mons are Male.
Thats probably just me though, since nobody else has any objections, but i feel C+ is a better place.

The other ranks seem about right, especially the Gourgeists, as none of the forms is legitimately "out-classed" (Except Large lelele)

Swampert was sent to D-Rank because of Gastrodon, wasnt it?

Gender Metagaming makes it easy to abuse Nidoking and Nidoqueen enough to the point

where they do not outclass each other although Nidoking has higher attack and speed.

Anyhow I am going to do two things: Add all FE Pokémon and viable NFE Pokémon to ranks and eventually split D Rank to separate those that have a niche from those that struggle to differentiate themselves. All viable Gen I Pokémon that are "in" ASB have been ranked and while Parasect joins the E-Club, Matezoide your precious Primeape got ranked C. Are you happy now?

I will rank Johto mons soon. Time to do something with this.

EDIT: Johto mons done, Hoenn next.

EDIT: Hoenn done, moved Swampert and Registeel to C-. Now for Sinnoh mons.

EDIT: Sinnoh done, Unova next.

EDIT: Unova done, finally for Kalos.

Okay double posting to say that I have ranked everything that is FE and all NFE's that I feel are good enough for D at least. I am now going to split D rank into D+, D, and D- within the next day or three and I need opinions on who should go where (This is to separate the "favourites" from those with a genuine niche). Also anything else you feel out is out of place and should be in a different rank please let me know.

Now time to begin the ranking war and hopefully get things stabilised before the ORAS meta comes in.

Most people asked for specific rankings and I did consider them but are generally ranked lower than argued for because I am being conservative wrt ranking and am underestimating as a result.
