Overview
########
- High Attack stat and powerful STAB moves
- Very bulky on both sides
- Great movepool with plenty of support moves and setup moves
- Typing is a mixed bag, giving it resistances to EdgeQuake and an immunity to Electric, but also making it weak to important offensive types in Ice, Fire and Flying
- It's kind of slow
Stealth Rock
########
name: Stealth Rock
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Wood Hammer/Bullet Seed
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Stone Edge/Toxic
ability: Overgrow
item: Leftovers
evs: 88 HP / 252 Atk / 168 Spe
nature: Adamant
Moves
========
- Torterra is one of the best Stealth Rock setters, having a great matchup vs most opposing Stealth Rock setters
- For its Grass STAB, you have the choice between Wood Hammer and Bullet Seed. Wood Hammer is its most reliable STAB move and hits like a truck, whereas Bullet Seed doesn't have any recoil damage and allows Torterra to break Sashes and Substitutes
- Earthquake is its other STAB move, hitting the Poison-types, Fire-types and Steel-types that don't mind its Grass-type STAB
- Stone Edge rounds out its coverage, hitting Flying-types very hard
- Toxic is an alternative, crippling bulky Grass-types that Torterra struggles to beat otherwise, such as Tangela and Serperior, while it can still annoy Flying-types that attempt to switch in
========
- This spread outspeeds max Speed Adamant Golem and Marowak, allowing Torterra to smack them with its supereffective STAB moves before they can do anything, while also outspeeding most Poliwrath and speed tying with standard Garbodor, among other Pokemon
- Max Attack with Adamant nature for maximum damage output
- The rest of the EVs are put into HP, giving Torterra some extra bulk while also hitting an HP number that maximizes the recovery Torterra receives from Leftovers
- A spread of 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def with an Adamant nature can be used if you don't care about outspeeding certain threats and would rather focus on Torterra's bulk as much as possible
- Overgrow allows it to hit extremely hard with its Grass STAB when it gets down to 1/3 of its HP
========
- Due to its great matchup vs a lot of common Stealth Rock leads, Torterra can be used as a lead to great efficiency
- Torterra's bulk makes it more durable than dedicated Stealth Rock leads, meaning it can be kept around for midgame in order to deal with certain threatening Pokemon thanks to its bulk and power
========
- This Torterra set performs very well on offensive teams and balance teams
- Bulky Water-types like Poliwrath are excellent partners, covering Torterra's weakness to Fire- and Ice-type attacks while being protected from Electric-types by Torterra
- Strong special attackers that can switch in on bulky Grass-types are good partners as well, because Torterra tends to struggle with these kinds of Pokemon. Fire-types such as Simsiear and Heatmor in particular can easily beat most Grass-types
Choice Band
########
name: Choice Band
move 1: Wood Hammer
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Stone Edge
move 4: Bullet Seed/Toxic
ability: Overgrow
item: Choice Band
evs: 88 HP / 252 Atk / 168 Spe
nature: Adamant
Moves
========
- Wood Hammer is Torterra's strongest STAB move, hitting many things for incredible damage
- Earthquake is a reliable STAB move that hits Fire-types, Steel-types and Poison-types that resist Wood Hammer
- Stone Edge rounds off its coverage, smacking Flying-types like Chatot and Togetic
- Bullet Seed is a Grass STAB move that doesn't have the nasty recoil of Wood Hammer and can also break Sashes, Sturdy and Substitutes, making it a better move to use against Golem, Sash Rampardos and SubPunch Poliwrath, for example
- Toxic sounds odd on a CB set, but it's Torterra's best way of crippling the bulky Grass-types that can switch in on it, such as Tangela and Gourgeist
========
- The EV spread outruns standard Golem and everything below, allowing Torterra to potentially OHKO it through Sturdy with Bullet Seed
- Once Overgrow activates, Torterra destroys everything with Wood Hammer
========
- Torterra is an excellent anti-lead, easily OHKOing or 2HKOing common leads. With Bullet Seed it can even ignore Golem's Sturdy
- Use this set early game in order to punch holes into the opponent's team, giving a teammate leeway to sweep later on
- Torterra can switch in relatively safely on most Rock- and Ground-types, look for these opportunities
- When in Overgrow range, consider using Bullet Seed over Wood Hammer if you have it, for it can still nab you the KO you need but without having Torterra KO itself due to recoil
- Only use Toxic when you predict a bulky Grass-type switching in, otherwise getting locked into it is only detrimental for you
========
- Pokemon that have trouble breaking through Rock-types, such as bulky SD Scyther, Purugly and Chatot appreciate Torterra's ability to come in on most of them and threaten something with its great power
- Bulky Water-types can switch in on the Fire- and Ice-types that might want to come in after Torterra KO'd something, so these form good partners for Torterra
- Again, any Fire-types or other Pokemon that can take care of bulky Grass-types are appreciated by Torterra
- Flying-types are hard to take care of for Torterra, so make sure you pack a bulky Rock-type such as Carracosta or a fast Electric-type such as Raichu or Electrode to take advantage of the Flying-types that are bound to come in
- Rock Polish cleaner
- Double dance(?)
- Defensive(?)
- Checks and counters
- other options
