Gen 2 A cool battle against Conflict

Hi everyone. I like posting commented logs and stuff, but it's the first time I do it here.

I feel not many of you like reading logs, but yeah.

I'll post the third battle of a BO3 against Conflict in GSC. After beating me (up) in the battle for RoApl we had to play a Bo3 for another tournament. I realized that I couldn't have many chances of beating him using defensive teams (also because they tend to be haxed :() and I probably needed to rely more on my offensive-predictive-style.

Here I'll post the third battle, which I think it was the best one.

My team: Cloyster / Raikou / Tentacruel / Exeggutor / Machamp / Blissey

Honestly not my best team I guess, but yeah. The point of the team is killing or sleeping the electric with Exeggutor for Tentacruel to be able to sweep, helped by Blissey's Light Screen. Cloyster also kills Starmie. Both things are useful to Machamp too.

Battle between Conflict and Bekins started!

Tier: GSC OU

Conflict sent out Nidoking!
Bekins sent out Cloyster!

Oh cool. It comes out I'm weak to Nidoking.

Start of turn 1
Bekins called Cloyster back!
Bekins sent out Machamp!

The foe's Nidoking used Thunder!
The attack of the foe's Nidoking missed!

Start of turn 2
Conflict called Nidoking back!
Conflict sent out Exeggutor!

Bekins called Machamp back!
Bekins sent out Raikou!
Bomber is watching the battle.

I was trying to absorb the Lovely Kiss with Raikou. Actually it isn't a Sleep Talker, but I wanted my Nidoking answers to be well awake. Should he have Vaporeon, I could easily Heal Bell with Blissey and protect Raikou with the Light Screen.

Start of turn 3
Raikou used Hidden Power!
It's super effective!
The foe's Exeggutor lost 45% of its health!

The foe's Exeggutor used Giga Drain!
Raikou lost 86 HP! (23% of its health)
Raikou had its energy drained!

Raikou restored a little HP using its Leftovers!
The foe's Exeggutor restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Start of turn 4
Conflict called Exeggutor back!
Conflict sent out Snorlax!

Raikou used Hidden Power!
The foe's Snorlax lost 10% of its health!

I've no Explosion absorber too, so yeah. This team has pros and many cons.

The foe's Snorlax restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Start of turn 5
Bekins called Raikou back!
Bekins sent out Machamp!

Conflict called Snorlax back!
Conflict sent out Nidoking!

Start of turn 6
Bekins called Machamp back!
Bekins sent out Exeggutor!

The foe's Nidoking used Earthquake!
It's not very effective...
Exeggutor lost 64 HP! (16% of its health)

Conflict probably realized or suspected I didn't have a good switch-in on King's Lovely Kiss so he was trying to predict Raikou again.

Exeggutor restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Start of turn 7
The foe's Nidoking used Lovely Kiss!
The attack of the foe's Nidoking missed!

Exeggutor used Sleep Powder!

I counted on this. Call me lucky but this was SOOO good.

Cloyster restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Moon Light is watching the battle.

There are two reasons for me doing this. One is of course Pursuit. The other is that I'm I'm preparing Tentacruel's sweep.

Start of turn 11
Cloyster used Surf!
It's super effective!
The foe's Tyranitar lost 54% of its health!

The foe's Tyranitar used Pursuit!
Cloyster lost 59 HP! (19% of its health)
Cloyster fainted!

Bekins: normal + bo3
Moon Light: ok lol
Bekins sent out Raikou!

Now Forretress is too in KO range from Hydro Pump. He'll send out Snorlax.

Start of turn 20
Conflict called Exeggutor back!
Conflict sent out Forretress!

Bekins called Machamp back!
Bekins sent out Raikou!

Ok, that's it. I can't figure out a way to avoid the Tentacruel vs Snorlax match-up. The rest of his team is ready to be swept. I have to try now, predicting Snorlax's entry.

The foe's Forretress restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Start of turn 21
Bekins called Raikou back!
Bekins sent out Tentacruel!

Conflict called Forretress back!
Conflict sent out Snorlax!

After a Swords Dance, Tentacruel does 39-46% to Snorlax. He CAN kill me with two Double-Edge, but that's not a sure thing. His medium recoil is 12%, so I also have chance to kill him. Basically:

-If Sleep Talk choses Rest, I win
-If he use Double-Edge, then I don't know. Many things could happen.
-If Stalk does select Curse, I have switch out.

Start of turn 22
Tentacruel used Swords Dance!

Raikou lost 266 HP! (74% of its health)
Raikou fainted!
The foe's Exeggutor fainted!
Lutra is watching the battle.
Conflict sent out Forretress!

Mhh...I really didn't expected this. Exeggutor was the only Machamp counter he had (but I still haven't seen his last poke).

And I still have my Exeggutor just in case he has a Vaporeon. Now he'll probably send out Forretress to be in advantage against my Machamp. I want him to Explode and then sweep.

Bekins sent out Machamp!
The foe's Forretress restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

Start of turn 26

Conflict sent out Vaporeon!
Bekins sent out Machamp!
Machamp is hurt by spikes!
Machamp restored a little HP using its Leftovers!

That's what using Blissey is about :( But here's the Vaporeon. He basically traded his Machamp counter for my Vaporeon's counters, but I still have one more. Now, time is running and the two teams are watching each others in the eyes, while a fierce battle is going to start.

My pokemons: Machamp, Exeggutor
His pokèmons: Vaporeon, Snorlax, Nidoking (asleep), Tyranitar (almost dead)

I sent out Machamp thinking he would send out Snorlax because of the coolness of Double-Edging my mons' life way. I mean, I just could'nt explode with gutor against lax, so I had to send out Machamp. But he made the right choice.

Start of turn 31
Bekins called Machamp back!
Bekins sent out Exeggutor!
Exeggutor is hurt by spikes!

The foe's Vaporeon used Surf!
It's not very effective...
Exeggutor lost 82 HP! (20% of its health)

Well, if now Snorlax comes in, I just can't let him Double-Edging Machamp in the switch. He must switch because if I explode now on Vaporeon, I win the game. So that's a not-so-hard-but-still-gutsy predict.

Of course he sent out TTar because he wanted to absorb an Explosion and that's one of the reasons I couldn't explode here.

Now at this moment I was thinking a lot. What do to? Sending out Machamp or Exploding? Machamp MAY beat Vapo 1vs1 if I explode now. Is sending out Machamp instead safer? I dunno, because taking a Double-Edge isn't what I would call "safe" anyway. I was running out of time and my instinct chose for Machamp to come out.

Start of turn 36
Bekins called Exeggutor back!

Good. Later on, Conflict will say that Vapo had Acid Armor. Here's a look of what failed in Conflict plan (my opinion of course): he probably thought at turn #30 that the scenario would be:

-Vapo vs Machamp. My exeggutor comes out. His Snorlax comes in and takes the Psychic/GDrain.
-Double-Edge in the switch on Machamp.
-CChop in the switch to Vaporeon. Bekins must switch to Exeggutor.
-Exeggutor must explode or Machamp will die of double-edge in the switch, losing the game.
-Exeggutor explodes on Snorlax
-Vaporeon vs Machamp: Vapo reveals Acid Armor, and Conflict wins unless Machamp crits.

Then, what has gone wrong in that plan? Basically it was my predict at turn #32 when I sent out Machamp predicting Snorlax's entrance, so that he could'nt Double-Edge Machamp in the switch.

Also, I decided not to Explode with Exeggutor at turn #35 and I didn't missed the Cross Chops.

Start of turn 39

Conflict couldn't sent out Snorlax here because a Cross Chop from Machamp plus the recoil and a Psychic from Exeggutor would have killed Snorlax. I had to use Eq here and not Curse because I didn't wanted to use 3 turns instead of 2 to kill Nidoking. If Nido awakens, I lose.

Start of turn 42
Machamp used Cross Chop!
The attack of Machamp missed!

The foe's Snorlax used Rest!
The foe's Snorlax went to sleep and became healthy!

Yeah, ok. Now I only have 2 more pps. I decided to use Curse because if Stalk does select Rest or Curse I'll be able both to survive another Double-Edge and to power-up my CChop. I would have good chance of winning should he use Rest/Curse (and that's a 66,6% chance). The alternative was relying on a crit, but in case of him selecting Double-Edge I would only have one single chance to try that. 25% with 80% accuracy vs 66,6% chance. I guess I made a good choice.

Will read the actual log when I get the time and will post a real comment afterwards too.

Snorlax on Bekins' team: yes. Over Raikou: no. Over Blissey: yes. Importance of CurseRoar in particular: I don't think so, just have something else that can beat Skarm and counter Lax. Like maybe Ttar with Fblast, I dunno.

I kinda like Conflict's team in general. Experimenting with non-Electric ideas is something I've always been too chicken to do myself. I remember a team by Kururin doing a similar thing, except simpler and with more Explosion. Forry/Gengar/Egg/ST Vap/SD Lax/Roar Golem is the team iirc. The idea is basically to Explode all day every day, then let Vap (who makes particularly good use of Explosion support, not having any Normal-resistant counters) pick up the pieces. The cool thing, too, is that even if you make a bad Explosion, you can still recover because you have so many and don't need a majority to win, only an absence of Vap counters. What's more, all your Exploders can take a hit from Zapdos, unlike Explosion teams that rely on Cloy to set Spikes. Conflict's version of the non-Electric team is better able to play a slower pace and has Nido + Vap to circumvent all Suicune sets, which is a cool idea that I've personally never been able to get to work for whatever reason.

As for the moves:

I liked the idea of turn 3 Giga Drain against Raikou. Basically ensures HP Ice won't 3HKO. I always underestimate just how much damage Giga can heal.

Turn 7 was ridiculous of course. I doubt it would have been instant game over because of IB Bliss being a sort of half-counter to Nido, but it certainly made life a LOT easier for Bekins.

The Ttar-vs-Cloyster fight to follow was kinda curious, but I guess he knew Cloy almost never 2HKOes and just didn't want to deal with any of its Explosion shenanigans. The lack of an Electric on Conflict's own team really meant that Cloy could stay in as long as it wanted to try to get a good boom in. If Snorlax comes in while his Ttar is battered and bruised, he's got checks (albeit some shaky ones in his own Lax and AA Vap), so he probably wasn't too afraid of that. Good thing for Conflict you couldn't test him with a Lax of your own, though.

Of course, he probably also figured the risk of your Lax not being Phazeable was probably worth trying to win the Spikes war by turn 10, although I can't think that was the primary reason because of possible Spinblock shenanigans from potentially unrevealed Ghosts.

Turn 22 Tenta risk was probably not something you wanted to go for. At best you 3HKO, he can 2HKO if he hits 2 DEs and of course can just Curse or Rest to nullify anything you gain. Maybe if he were low-health, not if he's healthy and only has one sleep turn left.

Sharp play on turn 25 might have been more expected if you paid close attention to the HP Ice damages. 46% is too high for a normal Egg, so he was packing HP Fire as his 4th rather than a status powder he would most certainly rather have used there. Makes sense he'd use trips-attacking Egg on this team too, considering Nido is supposed to be the one sleeping something. His only real way of getting your Kou out of the way was getting Egg to beat it, and considering your Champ would likely nail Egg with HP Bug eventually (you had only revealed CC + Curse up to then), he probably figured it was better to just transition to the sharp endgame rather than try to pussyfoot around with his Spikes advantage, especially with your own Egg ready to Explode on his Lax to force a sharp transition on your terms.

Turn 31 was a cool play. Definitely heads-up thinking there. Shame you didn't have the balls to follow up with Champ on turn 35. Conflict I think was primarily foddering Ttar, and on the off-chance you boomed, that was his best recipient. I dunno if I like that sac though, the boom wasn't terribly likely (not to mention he'd appreciate it landing on Lax anyway), and I mean if you double to Champ again I don't see a good continuation that doesn't just lose his Champ fodder for later.

Turn 37 was probably the time to AA if Conflict had it (unless he also lacked Rest, but imo BP would be silly without an Electric to pass to). Praying for no CC crits or, failing that, lucky CC misses is better odds even over all 6 of Champ's remaining chops than praying for one turn of Surf crit-or-CC miss (25%).

The very end was funny. So many shifts in who had the adv from silly dumb luck, effectively rendering every prior move pointless. First Champ falls to untimely Champ-ness (missed CCs), then Lax almost falls to some RBY-style SpFall stuff. Silly way to end the game. That said, Bekins could have played safer and Cursed up a couple times (1-2) against Nidoking before EQing it. Even if Nido wakes early and LKs, it needs to hit a bunch of Thunders to KO. Egg could have also come in and caused trouble at this point, although Cursing with Machamp is probably the best play as Egg Exploding on Lax just gives Nido more chance to follow up with an early wake to beat a +0 Machamp.

I tried the Tentacruel thing because should the Stalk select Rest I'd probably win in that moment, with a double swords dance. (ok I'm pretty sure there are grammar errors but yeah)

What do you mean with "follow up with Champ on turn 35"? To predict TTar by sending out Machamp? I think he would simply have sacrified TTar in that case, without important gains for me.

I'm considering the Snorlax thing. I guess the point of the CurseRoarer was more about the Roar than the Curse. It's hard to counter Umbreon mlooker without a roarer.

Lol Jorgen I have a Vapo+Explosion team almost identical to that Kurinin's team. I 5-0ed Conflict in the first battle of the Bo3 exploding vs Zapdos at the first turn. I don't know how to post replays though. It seems the extention is not right. The second battle was also cool

Snorlax on Bekins' team: yes. Over Raikou: no. Over Blissey: yes. Importance of CurseRoar in particular: I don't think so, just have something else that can beat Skarm and counter Lax. Like maybe Ttar with Fblast, I dunno.
You'll note that I said "if over Raikou". Otherwise Misdreavus/Umbreon/Jolteon are all very problematic for that team. I said "CurseRoarer" simply because those are the most threatening Roar users.

I was more thinking that there wasn't a lot of benefit for Conflict to sacrifice there, thus anticipating Lax was the play.

That said, there probably was more to the Ttar sac than I originally thought. If you double to Champ he gets a hit in as you Curse (every sliver of Champ's HP is very valuable here), then Roars to force you to attack the next turn. If you kill him, Egg is there for the OHKO. Thus, it wasn't so much to catch Egg's Explosion (Lax taking the boom would be just as good), but rather to avoid being totally helpless in another Machamp double-switch situation, and to let Lax in without fear should Egg stay in for the GD.

Cool, that's right!

I really like some of my opponent's smart moves, honestly. Also considering how fast he is in doing those moves.

Of course he could'nt predict Machamp by Surfing with Vaporeon, because an Explosion from Exeggutor would be his death. So he sent out Tyranitar both for preventing my predict AND to absorb my Explosion just in the case.

Does anyone know how to post PO's replays?
