OU Omastar

  • manaphy just hit gp phase so i can post this niggas
  • needs update since rain is getting super popular because ppl realize how good kingdra oma core is and oma kabu core is, but ye needs to express and knock off only slash last slot fools

Overview
########

Omastar is one of the most solid Pokemon to use on rain teams because it can aid other sweepers, such as Kingdra and Kabutops. On top of that, its immediate power lets it force the opposition to either sack a Pokemon or have one of their walls take massive damage, and in most scenarios, Hydro Pump will easily 2HKO whatever Omastar is facing. Omastar also checks Talonflame and Mega Pinsir, giving it a niche unique to only itself and Kabutops. However, Omastar is outpaced by common Choice Scarf users such as Landorus-T and Keldeo and is very reliant on rain to do its job. It also compounds rain teams' Thundurus weakness, meaning it has to be played carefully. Omastar also faces competition from Kabutops because of their similar typings, so having both on the same team is unfavorable in most scenarios.

Choice Specs

name: Choice Specs
move 1: Hydro Pump
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Scald
move 4: Knock Off
ability: Swift Swim
item: Choice Specs
evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe nature: Modest

Moves
========

Hydro Pump is Omastar's main STAB move when bulky walls such as Mega Venusaur are still in play, as it can 2HKO them after Stealth Rock damage. However, Scald remains Omastar's main choice against more offensive teams because it hits more than hard enough and can spread burns. Ice Beam is an obligatory coverage move, handy for hitting Grass-types. Knock Off hits the most common switch-in to Omastar, Chansey, for good damage and removes its Eviolite so that Omastar can 2HKO it later.

Set Details
========

A Modest nature, Choice Specs, and maximum Special Attack investment are required to let Omastar wallbreak and clean effectively. A Life Orb can be used to switch moves, but recoil damage makes Omastar lose a lot of power as well as its ability to check Talonflame well.

Usage Tips
========

Omastar should be played recklessly by spamming Hydro Pump against stall teams and using Knock Off to remove Chansey's Eviolite and Azumarill's Assault Vest on the switch. Scald should be used to clean up weakened teams if Omastar is still alive late-game.

Team Options
========

Politoed is obviously a mandatory teammate to set up rain. Kingdra is an excellent partner for Omastar because they share checks and counters, most notably Ferrothorn, and can slowly break past them with their powerful Hydro Pumps, allowing one to sweep the remainder of the opposition. Defog Latios and Latias are great for removing entry hazards because Omastar will switch out a lot. Pokemon that can check Thundurus, such as Mega Manectric, Magnezone, and Raikou, are valuable teammates for Omastar. They can also safely use Thunder thanks to Politoed's rain. Mega Heracross can break past Omastar's soft counters, such as Mega Venusaur, Assault Vest Azumarill, Empoleon, and Amoonguss, making it a very good team option. Solid pivots such as Landorus-T and Rotom-W are also useful to allow Omastar to get onto the field safely. Healing Wish Jirachi and Latias are also excellent teammates because they allow Omastar a second chance to sweep.

Other Options
########

Omastar does not have many other options. Hidden Power Grass can be used to beat Gastrodon, but losing Knock Off is huge. A Shell Smash set is possible, but priority users being able to pick it off and such a set's continued trouble with Ferrothorn and Thundurus makes it hard to consider. However, it completely destroys stall teams with some of its checks weakened. For instance, Chansey is 2HKOed after a boost while unable to do anything back except Toxic or Seismic Toss.

Checks & Counters
########

**Choice Scarf Users**: Omastar is quite slow, so faster Choice Scarf users, such as Garchomp, can outspeed it even under rain and KO it with a powerful attack.

**Special Walls**: Special walls such as Chansey and Blissey, as well as tanks such as Assault Vest Goodra, can take Omastar's hits with relative ease and can either cripple or outright KO it, but they all must watch out for Knock Off.

**Priority Users**: Omastar is weak to a few common priority attacks; Mach Punch from Conkeldurr or Technician Breloom will easily take it out.

**Grass-types**: Although Omastar has Ice Beam to handle most Grass-types, there are a few that it just can't deal with. Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn both take neutral damage from Ice-type attacks thanks to Thick Fat and its Steel typing, respectively. Both Pokemon also have 4x super effective STAB Grass-type moves to take Omastar down with ease; however, Ferrothorn can be worn down easily, and Mega Venusaur is 2HKOed by Hydro Pump after Stealth Rock, so be cautious. Though it is weak to Ice Beam, Amoonguss is also a good check to Omastar because of Giga Drain.

**Water-types**: Omastar has a hard time dealing with opposing Water-types. Gyarados takes neutral damage from Ice Beam and Hidden Power Grass, and bulky variants of it essentially counter Omastar, especially those with Earthquake. Rotom-W is also a bulky Water-type that can take down Omastar with its STAB Electric-type moves. Empoleon and Assault Vest Azumarill are other good options, but all of these are soft counters because they can be worn down very easily and still take massive damage from Hydro Pump.

Scald > Surf imo, Kingdra often runs Surf to get important ohko's/2hko's but Omastar has higher special attack so Scald hits about as hard as Kingdra's Surf and you get the nice 30% chance to burn, which cripples many switch ins.

I wouldn't say that Omastar sweeps teams better then Kingdra with Scarf Lando-T being everywhere. Omastar is the wallbreaker, Kingdra sweeps late game.

Also don't mention Kabu as a teammate because water/rock is garbage defensive typing and makes you super weak to Loom/Conk and every rain team needs an SD Scizor check imo (Kingdra). Omastar faces competition from Kabu, not from Kingdra.

I also think Shell Smash deserves an analysis because it's much better against stall then the Specs set because it can break Chansey without prediction (+4 Omastar ohko's chansey: +4 252+ SpA Mystic Water Omastar Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Eviolite Chansey in Rain: 624-735 (88.6 - 104.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock).

Mention Healing Wish Latias as a teammate because it beats Thundy, Loom and Conk. You're also not forced out by Thundy anymore because you can just heal Omastar up with healing wish. Mega Heracross is also a great teammate because it destroys Loom, Conk and Ferrothorn (and other grass types).

Venusaur is not a counter because Hydro Pump actually 2hko's.

Wasn't Shell Smash QC rejected? I would say though that Scald is probably the better choice over Surf for the Specs set, unless you can get calcs that show the Surf > Scald.

Can you also not cherry pick calcs? Nobody is letting your Omastar get to +4, and most Chansey invest in Special Defense, meaning you only OHKO it 31% of the time after Stealth Rock.

Nobody is letting you get to +4? You shell smash on the switch and then shell smash again and you're at +4. The only thing Chansey can do is Seismic toss or status you (you still outspeed after t-wave).

I should have been more specific. Mega Venusaur can still remove you from the match, as it can survive a +2 Hydro Pump from you in the rain after Stealth Rock 81% of the time and KO back with Giga Drain, which you fail to mention.

Scald > surf. Burn chance too good to give up. Take out the part "only viable swift swimmer that has knock off" cause kabutops has access to it. Not that it uses it but yeah. Landorus is a nice partner cause gets up rocks, has a slow u-turn and takes all of the priority that omastar takes. Also mention mega heracross who also takes the prio from pokemon like bisharp and breloom and can also threaten what omastar cant break

  • specially defensive gothitelle to get rid of thundy and secure the win to your rain team
  • defog mega scizor because hazards annoying for the title of most switch out swift swim user and gets half the weakness in rain
I would remove those two, as rain has much better way to deal with Thundurus than Gothitelle, and Defog Mega Scizor is too passive for rain, Rapid Spin Kabutops or Defog Lati@s are way better options for hazards removal.

Also, improve your checks and counters section, as you are missing checks and counters such as AV Azumarill, Empoleon, and Amoonguss, and explain more in depth how each of those Pokemon deal with Omastar. For example. max HP Mega Venusaur is 2HKOed by Hydro Pump in rain after SR iirc, so the reader should know this. In general, explain which of those Pokemon are checks, soft counters, and hard counters.

**Special Walls**: Special walls such as Chansey and Blissey, as well as tanks such as Assault Vest Goodra or Snorlax, can take Omastar's hits with relative ease and can either cripple or outright KO it, but they all must watch out for Knock Off
I pretty sure Snorlax isn't relevant in OU, and even then, it's 2HKOed by Hydro Pump(again, not sure what spread it should have, so I went with 0/252 because it gives Snorlax more special bulk than 252/0)
252+ SpA Choice Specs Omastar Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Snorlax in Rain: 202-238 (43.8 - 51.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Choice Specs Omastar Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Assault Vest Snorlax in Rain: 252-297 (48 - 56.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock

**Priority Users**: Omastar is weak to a few common priority attacks; Mach Punch from Conkeldurr or Technician Breloom will easily take it out.
Actually, it's only weak to Mach Punch(and Vaccum Wave too, but it's rare). You could mention LO Bisharp's Sucker Punch too I think, as it hurts a lot:
252+ Atk Life Orb Bisharp Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Omastar: 149-177 (53 - 62.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

**Grass-types**: Although Omastar has Ice Beam to handle most Grass-types, there are a few that it just can't deal with. Mega Venusaur, Amoonguss, and Ferrothorn both take neutral damage against Ice-type attacks thanks to Thick Fat and Steel typing, respectively. Both Pokemon also have 4x super effective STAB Grass-type moves to take Omastar down with ease, however, Ferrothorn can be worn down easily and Mega Venusaur and Amoonguss are 2HKOed by Hydro Pump after Stealth Rock, so be cautious.
This paragraph is worded as if it's only talking about Mega Venusaur and Ferrothorn, so you might want to change this. Also, Amoonguss isn't neutral to Ice Beam, so it can be OHKOed by Ice Beam after rocks(not sure what's Amoonguss' usual EV spread, so I just went with 252/4).
252+ SpA Choice Specs Omastar Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Amoonguss: 354-418 (81.9 - 96.7%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

mention smash lo it 2hkoes chansey in rain lol

so you mention knock off as hitting azumarill, but i disagree. knock off is almost exclusively to hit chansey, and you're going to want to smack even av azumarill up with a scald or hydro so you can smack it around later.

mention that its typing gives it overlap with kabutops, which means that it faces some competition. running both and having the typing redundancy isn't that bad, but it's something to consider.

GP 2/2 done and done.
