The Smogon University "University" Thread

Although there are good number of members that are still in grade school (K-12), there are also a lot of members here who are in or have graduated from college/university. I've always wondered who goes/went to what school (out of sheer curiosity) and how's everyone's college experience. Furthermore, for all of you prospective college applicants, you could possibly find undergrads or alumni here who attend/attended the schools you're applying to, start up a convo with them about their college experience, and basically get more information about schools you're planning about applying to.

I'll start off. I'm currently a freshman at the University of Maryland. I'm currently going down an Aerospace Engineering track at Maryland. However, I'm also here on a conditional transfer option from Cornell University, so I'm planning to head up to Ithaca the next academic year.

So what about you all?

I graduated earlier this year from Purdue University. B.A. Political Science, B.S. Economics, minors in environmental policy and English. I always loved how it kind of sounds like it's a private school, but isn't.

Couple of things: TONS of engineering students, no art. If you want that type of stuff, go to IU. West Lafayette is ridiculously safe, even for a dedicated college town. The area is pretty; Lafayette is actually pretty nice, esp. downtown. The school itself is super conservative culturally, but there are some fun people. Krannert is a good business school, but beware if you're doing Econ: almost all of the profs are freshwater, as if they just copypasta'd U of Chicago. Political Science department is full of really interesting profs. It has one of the largest proportions of international students of any public school, mostly from China.

BSc Economics class of 2008 -> Auditor -> Investment bank middle office

I somehow developed a work ethic during my third year of university, so things have worked out.

In hindsight, I should have:
  • Actually studied during first year and got an internship.
  • Tried harder in second year and got an internship.
  • Started researching my career options a year+ before graduation.
  • NETWORKED MORE
  • Made a greater effort to forge lasting friendships.
Life may have been easier after graduation.

Just graduated from a Bachelor of Marketing Management at the University of Canberra and have applied for a summer internship doing Marketing/PR for Spotify. After this, I plan to travel for a year before using my marketing experience to start my own business on the side while working an office job.

English Undergrad, almost halfway through. Not too shabby. Also a semi-pro musician on the side.

No clue what to do with life. I wanna travel and earn, and maybe earn while doing music (which isn't looking so good)....

Started my junior year in September. Currently have a paid internship which is cool but tough alongside 5 classes. I can graduate by Fall 2015 but I'm considering finishing my remaining courses in the Spring of 2016 (original graduation date) which will allow me to go to go to school part time and work full time (or part time).

3rd year Economics / PoliSci student at McMaster University. Probably gonna graduate in 2016, assuming I do 3 courses this summer school and 3 more in the summer after 4th year. Only behind because family issues drove me to depression 1st year and just sorta couldn't cope with a full course load. And between therapy sessions in 2nd year, I had to do a few less courses, but otherwise my marks were great. Kinda wanna do some work with the UN or World Bank because my favourite subject is developmental economics, though I have reservations on how much they actually care to help the developing world. Also kinda wanna go to law school, but my shit 1st year marks are kinda brutal, also apparently a lot of them have concerns over students who couldn't maintain full course loads all 4 years, so I'm not sure how that's gonna work out.

3 summer courses? What are you a masochist?

Anyway...I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm purposefully lagging my college career because I quite enjoy this bubble I'm living in at shudder at the thought of popping it and entering the 'real world.'

(Business marketing major at CSUF)

Civil Engineering, 5-year, at NTNU in Trondheim. I'm currently in fourth year, and have decided to specialize in building physics. Luckily, the field needs more people, and the construction/advisor sector is huge, so I'm pretty sure I'll get a job upon graduation. Good thing the wages are high too, since I'll have racked up a study loan of about $100,000 at the end of studies. At least there is no tuition fee.

No idea what else to do with my life, though.

Graduated last year from Virginia Tech with a BS in Mechanical Engineering.

That was the educational side, but the best part of my college experience came from when I joined the student run radio station. I met a lot of my friends there, we had/still have good times.

I'm a Studio Art major, currently in my third year on a four-year track. I'm hoping to progress into graphic design, though as of now I've been biding my time with traditional media classes until I get the chance to attend some of the more interesting/modern media courses. Though with that said, practicing with traditional drawing, painting and sculpting methods has given me a greater interest in and respect for art history.

Political Science/Statistics guy going to Penn State. Not 100% sure on what I'd like to do once I've graduated, I've been considering entering politics, but I haven't decided yet. Been considering actuarial sciences or political advising as a possibility as well. I started out as a music ed major at Duquesne University, but as much as i like music, it's simply not a viable field in the current day

Man, you guys go to really neat schools. I just go to some private college in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I'm taking courses to help work towards earning some IT certifications. I'm hoping I can at least get some work with the certs and knowledge that I'll have.

I'm finally in the vet tech major in a community college. This is my first semester in this program and its going fine. They weren't kidding when they say that health programs in general are usually more difficult than regular programs though!

I was in the animal care specialist program which I only need 1 class to complete so I'll hopefully walk out with 2 degrees when its all said and done. Still thinking about transferring to a 4 year school like mount ida after this though just so I could get some of that real college life.

Carleton University, Ottawa. 3rd year Honours Commerce major with concentrations in Finance and Management. On track to finish in 4.5 years courtesy of the extra concentration with a lighter credit load the last two semesters.

Not entirely sure what I want to do with my life but I'm fairly adaptable so I figure Finance gets me a job, Management gets me promotions/money, and I figure out my passions after 5 and on weekends.

Currently a freshman in college, I got a 30 on the ACT and had at least 3.5 graduating so I'm pretty sure I could've gotten into a University but I didn't really feel prepared for it so I figured I'd start at a college. I haven't technically declared it yet but my major will be Social Work, hoping to be a counselor of some sort. Planning to go to seminary as well as grad school after getting my bachelor's degree.

I also considered majoring or minoring in music but didn't 'cause I'm not sure what I'd do in it, I'm not really interested in teaching or composing, just playing.

Oxford University, England. I'm in my second year, and I'm an Organic Chemistry major, with a minor in biology.

My parents paid for the remainder of what I had after my scholarships, but I'll be stuck with the additional things should I choose to take more classes to get certified. Blah. Luckily, I did some shadowing over the summer and I've secured a job in a Swedish lab doing a startup for when I graduate :) I've had a pretty good run so far.

Am I understanding this correctly? You're pursuing CFA without professional experience and sponsorship?

Regardless, you should read this article as a starting point before you do anything that you might regret:

The site focuses on IBD, but its content is obviously applicable elsewhere.

To be fair, the path is more Degree ----> (job or something leading to a job fulfilling CFA work requirements / sponsorship) ---> CFA Charter. I'm still working on that in between step, but the end goal is the CFA charter.

I'm in my third year at a community college currently (I slacked off for a bit in my first year). I'm transferring to UC Davis as an entomology major this coming year, and possibly minoring in education (I want to teach almost as much as I want to study spiders). I'll be living with friends once I go (either crashing on the couch of a group already there or getting a place with some other friends transferring out of Foothill this year, depending on how many of my compatriots applying this year end up going). Kinda hazy on any details outside of that, though.
