Magneton @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Volt Switch
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Magneton is here to fulfill one of his only niches over magnezone in the ou meta, checking SD talon! Magnezone can come in on any move other than flare blitz, easily take a +2, +4, or even +6 brave bird, and comfortably outspeed even max speed talonflame and OHKO back with thunderbolt. Obviously it cant take a flare blitz, so you have to play carefully around that.

Other niches 'Ton has over 'Zone is outspeeding base 115s, +1 adamant gyara and weavile, but apart from that its outclassed, but checking talonflame is a role it excels at.
Calcs
252 SpA Magneton Thunderbolt vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Talonflame: 378-446 (118.4 - 139.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Kabutops @ Life Orb
Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Stone Edge
- Rapid Spin / Swords Dance
- Aqua Jet / Low Kick

Here is basically the Talonflame Check on rain teams. Kabutops can come in on any move Talonflame wants to use, take it and then kill the Talonflame with an Aqua Jet, or if you don't have it, a Waterfall (/ Stone Edge if you're feeling lucky and are scared of a Bulk Up or a Will-O-Wisp).

The cool thing about Aqua Jet is, that in Rain it outprioritzes Talonflame's Brave Bird, so that you can kill it and don't have to take more damage than you need.
252 Atk Sharp Beak Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Kabutops: 81-96 (31 - 36.7%) -- 74.6% chance to 3HKO

Mega Tar is an amazing offensive counter to SD+Roost+STAB Talonflame. Thanks to the combination of its immense strength and bulk, T-Tar can take any hit, even at +2, survive, and get off a Stone Edge. Talonflame's best scenario is SD'ing on the switch into T-tar, SD'ing again as it Mega Tar DD's, and gets off a +4 Brave bird for 52.7 - 62.1% but then it just dies four-five times over to Stone Edge. W/O any boosts, Talonflame can only muster right under 21% max damage with Brave Bird so the smogonbird has no other choice but to switch out.

Ability: Swift Swim
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Ice Beam
- Hydro Pump

- Surf

Omastar is the only way to go to beat talonflame on rain. Do not be led astray by false prophets. Talonflame is not the real birdjesus and thus must be destroyed.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Omastar Hydro Pump vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Talonflame in Rain: 1104-1298 (346 - 406.8%)

If you want to ensure its demise:
252+ SpA Choice Specs Omastar Surf vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Talonflame in Rain: 902-1064 (282.7 - 333.5%)

In return:
252 Atk Sharp Beak Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Omastar: 71-84 (25.2 - 29.8%)

It is hitting you for a lot less then you hit it.

Saviour toed is a really good partner that should be used with Lord Helix.

Some speed can be sacrificed for bulk, but you risk getting outsped by Scarf heatran and adamant scarf excadrill

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
- Thunderbolt

Zapdos is a decent check to SD Talonflame, taking minimal damage from Talon's unboosted attacks even after rocks. If SmogonBird is at +2, do not worry because a full health Zapdos still beats it as long as Zap doesn't get critted. Other things Zapdos does is wall Pinsir and some other biridies + provide its team with a Defogger that actually threatens Bisharp.

Neutral TFlame

252 Atk Sharp Beak Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 240+ Def Zapdos: 69-82 (17.9 - 21.3%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Wish
- Protect
- Calm Mind
- Moonblast

While Moonlight Unaware Clefable gets beaten by SD Talonflame (stalling you out of your 8 Moonlights), Wish Protect Calm Mind doesn't. It may look a bit odd to just have your Moonblast stab, but it works here in checking SD Talonflame!

The cool thing (we probably all know) about Unaware is, that it just ignores Talonflame boosting to +6.
The scenario will be probably be: You come in on a Brave Bird, Brave Bird, Wish and Protect, Brave Bird, Calm Mind and Protect, Brave Bird, Wish and Protect, Brave Bird, Calm Mind and Protect.....
This way, you can boost yourself to +6 and then kill the Talonflame with a Moonblast (it will Brave Bird and get into the area where Moonblast kills).

Although you're Unaware, be aware of crits. They can ruin your life (also Stallbreaker Talonflame, but this is a different story).
252 Atk Sharp Beak Talonflame Brave Bird vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Clefable: 151-178 (38.3 - 45.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
+6 0 SpA Clefable Moonblast vs. 88 HP / 0 SpD Talonflame: 264-312 (82.7 - 97.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Garchomp as a Check

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish nature (Lax or Relaxed if Fire Blast is used)
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail
- Stealth Rock / Stone Edge
- Toxic / Fire Blast

Fat Garchomp can take an unboosted Brave Bird and reply with Stealth Rock to keep Talonflame in check or with Stone Edge to outright OHKO it. Here's the thing though, if fat Garchomp has Stone Edge, it'll win every time (it's a double down if Talonflame is already at +2 when Chomp switches in), but if it has Stealth Rock, it won't KO Talonflame directly, aside from the said double down and one of the scenarios below, but still will keep Talonflame in check.

Scenario #1:

Chomp switches in, Talon uses Brave Bird: Chomp loses 127-151 HP (30.2 - 35.9%) and Talon loses 134-142 HP (42 - 44.5%).
Talon uses Roost, Chomp uses Dragon Tail: Talon recovers all of its HP then loses 108-127 HP (33.8 - 39.8%) before getting off the field.
Eventually, Chomp will use SR to keep Talonflame in check.

Scenario #2:

Chomp switches in, Talon (at +2) uses Brave Bird: Chomp loses 255-301 HP (60.7 - 71.6%) and Talon loses 177-192 HP (55.5 - 60.2%).
If Talon uses Roost: the outcome is similar to Scenario #1, but with less HP left from both sides.
If Talon uses Brave Bird: Chomp is KOed and so is Talon
(Recoil from BBs = 140 HP, Recoil from Chomp's RH and RS from BBs = 184 HP, total of 324 HP).

Scenario #3:

Chomp switches in, Talon uses Swords Dance.
Talon uses Brave Bird, Chomp uses Dragon Tail
: Chomp loses 255-301 HP (60.7 - 71.6%) and Talon loses 285-319 HP (89.3 - 100%) before getting off the field.
Even if Talonflame is not KOed here (needs max rolls from both Chomp and Talon), Chomp will eventually use SR to keep Talon from switching in.

Week 45

Thanks for the Talonflame checks and counters!

This week we'll do Mega Beedrill!

But first, here are a couple things:

1. Congrats to Branflakes325 and ThePack for making it into the Hall of Fame!

2. I removed some outdated entries in the archive. This won't affect your Hall of Fame standing or anything; it's just meant to save space for more relevant mons. In a similar fashion, I also deleted all banned Pokemon. Feel free to PM me entries for Pokemon with blank spaces.

3. New rule: calcs, if not obvious, are mandatory. Like, if you have a Pokemon with only fighting, bug, and poison attacks, you don't need to give calcs if you're nominating Doublade. But otherwise, I want to see the most common scenarios laid out.

Scizor @ Scizorite
Ability: Technician
EVs: 248 HP / 84 Atk / 176 SpD
Impish Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Knock Off
- Swords Dance
- Roost

Bulky SD Mega Scizor just ruins Mega Beedrill as it can easily Roost off damage from Beedrill's attacks, Drill Run barely 4HKO's and U-Turn only 5HKO's after SR, Knock Off does even less and Poison Jab does nothing, while Scizor either SDs then OHKOs (2HKO without boosts)

Defensive:
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Scizor: 67-79 (19.5 - 23%) -- 9.4% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill U-turn vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mega Scizor: 58-69 (16.9 - 20.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock

Skarmory @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Whirlwind / Taunt
- Brave Bird
- Stealth Rock / Defog

Thanks to Skarmory's typing and excellent defense, it can come in on any of Mega Beedrill's attacks and force it to U-Turn out. Rocky Helmet can be used to punish said U-Turns, but given how little damage U-Turn does and Skarmory's access to recovery, you're better off with the passive recovery. Of course, if it's hit with Knock Off it won't matter, but either way it can't really do anything to Skarmory:

First time Skarm gets hit with Knock Off:
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 68-80 (20.3 - 23.9%) -- 60% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

Every time after that:
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 45-54 (13.4 - 16.1%) -- possible 6HKO after Stealth Rock

And for those who need to see how little U-Turn does:
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill U-turn vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Skarmory: 24-29 (7.1 - 8.6%) -- possibly the worst move ever

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 56 Def / 200 Spe
Impish Nature
- Roost
- Taunt
- Acrobatics / Swords Dance
- Earthquake

Gliscor can take any move multiple times and 2HKO back efficiently. Although taking a Knock Off isn't the best idea, it doesn't need Poison Heal to beat Mega Beedrill thanks to its typing and Roost. Overall it can switch-in repeatedly and threaten Beedrill out easily (and set up an SD to boot). The Specially defensive set also works well enough to counter.

0 Atk Gliscor Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 210-247 (77.4 - 91.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252+ Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 56+ Def Gliscor: 93-110 (26.2 - 31%) -- possible 5HKO after Poison Heal

Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 240 Def / 8 SpD / 8 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Stone Edge / Knock Off

With his excellent physical bulk, Intimidate, resistances to both Bug- and Poison-type moves and an immunity to Drill Run, Landorus-T easily takes any of M-Beedrill's moves and can retaliate with a STAB Earthquake (Stone Edge isn't obligatory to counter Killer Bee since Earthquake is enough to OHKO!).

Calcs:

Mega Aerodactyl is a good Check to Mega Beedrill, as it can win in almost every scenario thanks to its typing and speed after mega evolution (It outspeeds Mega Beedrill by two points with this EV spread).

The only way you can loose, is when you come in on a move with Stealth Rocks on the field before mega evolution.
Since you however probably will switch it in on a Protect if Mega Beedrill didn't Mega evolve yet, you can take a hit and then mega evolve.

Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 16 Def / 240 SpD
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Heavy Slam
- Thunder Wave / Ice Punch
- Earthquake / Dragon Tail / Roar

Mega Aggron can easily shrug off multiple attacks from Mega Beedrill, even super effective ones like Drill Run, and OHKO back with Heavy Slam. It can even set up Stealth Rocks, meaning Beedrill will have a hard time switching in and out if it decides to U-Turn out.

What Beedrill does:

252+ Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off vs. 252 HP / 16+ Def Mega Aggron: 38-45 (11 - 13%) -- possible 8HKO

Ferrothorn @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Leech Seed
- Gyro Ball
- Stealth Rock
- Protect
Standard Phys Defensive ferrothorn, can check nicely Beedrill
Because:
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill U-turn vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 102-122 (29 - 34.7%)
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 70-83 (19.9 - 23.6%)
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Ferrothorn: 58-69 (16.5 - 19.6%)
Poison Jab is uneffective

So ferrothorn is a free switch in 1/4 of the times, while the other 3/4s he puts Beedrill close to 70% if tanks a U-Turn/Knock-Off, and gets basically no damage by Drill Run. Ferrothorn can just Leech+Protect to recover HP to check Beedrill later, and since beedrill will U-Turn if it hadn't knock offed yet you could check indirectly it by putting stealth rocks on (which will severely hinder the bee's free switch ins). Also, (matters for the definition of check, even though Beedrill flies away), you guarantee an OHKO with gyroball

0 Atk Ferrothorn Gyro Ball (150BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 312-367 (115.1 - 135.4%)
And as everyone knows, this serves for a thousands roles in the battle too, generally as a great rock setupper and annoyer with lseed

Ferro is not a counter of Beedrill, because it risks a 3HKO by U-Turn in 3 different turns of the match, and leech seed could be unusable due to a grass type.
But if rocks are constantly up, and no grass types, then Ferrothorn has a big chance to counter it: not without being damaged, but overall bee dies and ferro lives. It will deal 54%(rocky helmet+ironbarbs+rocks) to Beedrill everytime it switches in a U-Turn, granting a maximum of 2 switchins to Beedrill.
But we're talking about chances: there are wishers, healing wish Latas'es, defoggers, and Magnezone. And those are so common in a Beedrill team.

im nominating bulky chomper as a solid check for mega beedrill. i guess most people by now has noticed how well bulky ground types does against beedrill, garchomp is no exception, with rocky helmet + rough skin it punishes mega drills best attributt in creating momentum and driller has to pay for everytime it decides to do so. also chomper has rocks which further punishes drillers longivity, it beats drillers common trapping partner in magnezone easely and also breaks beedrill voltturn teams easely due to it's typing, ability, bulk and utility. garchomp has the ability to beat any voltturner that are normally seen with driller, magnezone/ton, rotom-w, landorus-t and to an extent raikou. this makes garchomp to one off the better checks to not only beedrill itself, but to teams thats ment to work around beedrill as a whole.

Roar and Dragon Tail can be used to phaze sweepers trying to set-up on Gyarados while Thunder Wave cripples switch-ins in general. The physically defensive spread allows Gyarados to take on Excadrill and Mega Charizard X better while 8 Spe is used to outspeed Adamant Azumarill.

-1 252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill Poison Jab vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Gyarados: 110-130 (27.9 - 33%) -- 91.6% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
0 Atk Gyarados Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 211-250 (77.8 - 92.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Countering Beedrill is an odd scenario in my opinion. Yes, most of the standard physical walls, and even physically bulky pokemon like Conkeldurr can switch into any of Beedrill's moves and have the ability to KO it. The problem is that Beedrill will be using its powerful U-Turn every chance it gets to gain momentum and, over the course of a game, wear down its would be answers. Take Skarmory for example. Skarm can easily take anything that Beedrill can possibly throw at it, but if Beedrill uses U-Turn as Skarm comes in, it can simply switch to something that can force Skarm out. Just because Skarm made Beedrill U-Turn out of the battle, does not mean that Skarm has won.

In my opinion, a counter to Beedrill has to have some way of discouraging it from using U-Turn, like the Rocky Helmet Ferrothorn set posted above.

Reserving Baloon Heatran

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 12 HP / 252 SpA / 244 Spe
Timid Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Fire Blast / Flamethrower
- Taunt
- Earth Power / Toxic / Flash Cannon / Will-o-Wisp

Offensive Air Balloon Heatran can come in on any of Mega-Bees moves with its balloon intact and OHKO Back, and wins if Beedrill packs knock off over Drill Run. Unfortunately, once Trans balloon is popped it is OHKO'd by drill run, but wins guaranteed the first time it comes in.

Because Tran can lose to Knock Off/Drill Run if its weakened/has its balloon popped, its best to apply offensive pressure to hazard users that always accompany M-Bee by just constantly attacking with moves that hit the opponents hazard removers hard, and taunting with Tran, as M-Bee hates hazards. Tran also beats most hazard removers, allowing the pressure to be ramped up against M-Bee.

Calcs
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 12 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 113-133 (34.6 - 40.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill U-turn vs. 12 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 40-48 (12.2 - 14.7%) -- possible 7HKO
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. Air Balloon Heatran: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time
Stomachs U-Turn, Knock Off, Poison Jab and Drill run
252 Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. 12 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 372-440 (114.1 - 134.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Is OHKO'd by drill run after balloon pops however :(
252 SpA Heatran Flamethrower vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Beedrill: 354-416 (130.6 - 153.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
Easily OHKO's back with either Flamethrower or Fire Blast

So TL;DR
Heatran Wins with its balloon intact, takes jack shit from bees stabs, and wins if Bee has knock off over drill run and you keep hazards up, limiting M-Bees switch ins.

Zapdos @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: NaN Atk
- Roost
- Volt Switch/defog
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave/hidden power ice/hp grass

Healing + tbolt pretty mandatory rest all optional based on team.

Sheesh only little late and most good answers already gone.

Well:
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill Poison Jab vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 156-184 (40.7 - 48%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill U-turn vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 68-81 (17.7 - 21.1%) -- possible 5HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

So jab 2hkos with SR but dos can otherwise switch in if healthy and into any other move.

In return:
8 SpA Zapdos Heat Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Beedrill: 200-236 (73.8 - 87%)
8 SpA Zapdos Thunderbolt vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Beedrill: 142-168 (52.3 - 61.9%)

Choice Band Scizor: Check

Scizor @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature
- Bullet Punch
- U-turn
- Pursuit
- Superpower

I know Mega Scizor was posted, but Choice Band Scizor works a bit differently, and it also frees your Mega up. The main difference is that it runs Pursuit over Knock Off:

252+ Atk Choice Band Technician Scizor Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 219-258 (80.8 - 95.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

And that's if Beedrill doesn't switch (remember that Pursuit still works on U-turn, double power and everything, if Beedrill is faster). If Scizor is seeing a Beedrill in its face at the start of a turn, that Beedrill is good as dead.

The other difference between Mega and CB Scizor, is that Bullet Punch 1HKOs instead of doing like 70-90%

252+ Atk Choice Band Technician Scizor Bullet Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 328-387 (121 - 142.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Meanwhile, Beedrill isn't doing much back:

252+ Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill U-turn vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Scizor: 93-110 (27 - 31.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
252+ Atk Mega Beedrill Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Scizor: 129-152 (37.5 - 44.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Mega Beedrill Drill Run vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Scizor: 107-126 (31.1 - 36.6%) -- 67% chance to 3HKO
Mega Beedrill Poison Jab vs. Scizor: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time

252 Atk Aerilate Mega Pinsir Quick Attack vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Beedrill: 396-468 (146.1 - 172.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Beedrill Poison Jab vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Pinsir: 168-198 (61.9 - 73%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Pinsir switches in once and OHKOes with Quick Attack.
