Assault Vest
########
name: Assault Vest
move 1: Fire Blast
move 2: Thunderbolt
move 3: Hidden Power Grass
move 4: Psychic / Flame Charge
ability: Vital Spirit
item: Assault Vest
evs: 104 HP / 252 SpA / 152 Spe
nature: Modest

Moves
========

Fire Blast hits extremely hard with maximum Special Attack investment. Flamethrower is another option, although it is considerably weaker and misses the 2HKO on Pokemon such as Musharna, Kecleon, and Audino after Stealth Rock. Thunderbolt sets Magmortar apart from other Fire-type attackers, and is extremely useful for hitting bulky Water-types such as Mantine, Pelipper, and Prinplup. Hidden Power Grass is used to hit Rhydon, Lanturn, Quagsire, and Seismitoad super effectively. Psychic hits one of Magmortar's most common switch-ins, Hariyama, for respectable damage; this is extremely helpful because Hariyama typically lacks reliable recovery. If you're not concerned with Hariyama, Flame Charge can be used over Psychic to give Magmortar the opportunity to sweep late-game. You can also forgo Hidden Power Grass for Flame Charge.

Set Details
========

The given EV spread allows Magmortar to hit as hard as possible and outrun everything up to and including neutral-natured base 70 Speed Pokemon such as Ludicolo. The remaining 104 EVs are invested in HP to give Magmortar some additional bulk. Magmortar capitalizes on this additional bulk by running Assault Vest, which allows Magmortar to check several powerful special attackers such as Lilligant and Typhlosion. Both Vital Spirit and Flame Body are viable abilities, but Vital Spirit allows Magmortar to check Sleep Powder users such as Vivillon, Vileplume, and Lilligant. Flame Body can be used for its 30% chance to burn foes on contact, giving Magmortar the ability to punish U-turn users. However, losing the ability to check sleep inducers such as Jynx, Lilligant, and Vivillon can be devastating for some teams.

Usage Tips
========

Switch Magmortar into special attacking Grass-, Fire-, and Ice-types such as Lilligant, Typhlosion, and Jynx. Just be wary of Psyshock users such as Ninetales, Jynx, and Mesprit. Thanks to Vital Spirit, Magmortar can switch into sleep-inducing moves such as Sleep Powder and Lovely Kiss from Pokemon such as Lilligant, Vivillon, and Jynx. While Magmortar does enjoy switching in on several common Pokemon, entry hazards can wear it down quickly; for example, a layer of Spikes and Stealth Rock can turn crucial 3HKOs such as Choice Specs Typhlosion's Eruption into 2HKOs. So, whenever possible, clear the field of entry hazards before Magmortar switches in.

Team Options
========

Water-type Pokemon such as Seismitoad, Lanturn, and Feraligatr appreciate Magmortar's ability to switch into Grass-type attacks with ease. They can also take Water-type attacks aimed at Magmortar. Grass-type Pokemon such as Vileplume, Gourgeist, and Leafeon appreciate Magmortar switching to Fire- and Ice-type attacks, and they can also take most Ground- and Water-type attacks aimed at Magmortar. Fire-type Pokemon such as Typhlosion, Ninetales, and Pyroar have similar checks and counters to Magmortar that they appreciate worn down. Rapid Spin and Defog users such as Claydol, Sandslash, and Mantine can clear the field of entry hazards and give Magmortar an easier time switching into attacks. Finally, entry hazard setters such as Crustle, Steelix, Qwilfish, and Garbodor can help Magmortar secure important KOs on specially defensive Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Rhydon.

does flame body really deserve a slash? it can't really take physical hits, and it's ability to check/counter stuff like Lilli, Jynx, and Vivillon with Vital Spirit is a really good and unique niche

nah probs not, i'll just give it a small mention in set details as it can be good for certain teams

Is Flamethrower actually worth a full slash rather than just a Moves mention? I understand that on a more "defensive" or tanky set that the accuracy is nice, but unless your name is Char-Y flamethrower is so pissweak I feel like it doesn't really deserves a full slash cause the accuracy isn't all that helpful if you leave everything at ~10% and are forced to take an extra hit. thoughts?

yeah I've never run flamethrower, but tbf I've never actually done any calcs with it either. I'll research and see which is better, I'd assume Fire Blast gets an important 2hko or two tho

edit: flamethrower misses out on some weird 2hkos i guess, stuff like kecleon, av kanga, musharna so its relevant enough that i'll just say unless you're running spikes support fire blast is better. moves mention is all i'l give flamethrower

This is QC ready, as far as I know Overview and C&C don't need anything more than a one line addition about Assault Vest to the Overview, so I didn't include them. Let me know if this is an error and I can quickly fix that I guess

I like flame body too bc u-turn, esp random special attackers with u-turn like xatu and mesprit. probably not worth the slash but fine to mention in SD.

wouldn't even mention earthquake. like the only thing it hits is spdef flareon and like spdef lanturn? lol bc you don't have LO.

I guess you can mention psyshock in usage tips or w/e. you mentioned switching it into jynx and I can't imagine it taking lo psyshock at all.

rip mega camel

does hidden power water hit anything that hp grass doesnt anymore? i guess other fire-types harder, but put hp grass first now to hit seismitoad and quag harder. i dont think hp water deserves a slash anymore
