Arena
The ASB Tournament Arena
Field Type: Neutral
Complexity: Simple
Format: All

Restrictions: No Restrictions

Description: Surrounded by thousands of screaming Pokémon fans, the ASB Arena can be best described as a standard Pokémon battling arena. In the centre of the arena lies a dirt-based floor outlined to show two separate sides (with a white Poké Ball centre). Surrounding the dirt is a moat filled with water. The moat is about 4.5m wide & creates a perimeter around the dirt arena. The arena itself is 24m wide, 33m long. All moves, weathers, and abilities are legal for the match, since it is an outdoor arena with a large water source & packed dirt. Pokémon must stay in the arena (or the dimensions of the arena in the case of Flying-type Pokémon, who cannot leave the arena & cannot fly higher than 18m). This prevents Pokémon from injuring the crowd watching the tournament. There are no outside interruptions by fans, Pokémon, or other elements not associated with the current battle.

Well after having done all the hard work to go 2-0 up in their pool both Canis and Maxim find themselves in an unenviable position. One slight misstep here could find either combatant yielding their place in the knock out rounds to either of AOPSUser or Eternal Drifter who are hurriedly snapping at their heels. While the winner of this match has a guaranteed finals birth the loser will have to start quickly doing their sums and scraping to conserve HP in the hopes of making it through on percentage. But hey I didn't even have an opinion on 2/3 for the cutoff.

Anyways onto the teams... Canis has decided to be a pussy and not even bring his Legend, I guess because Azelf wasn't looking at too many positive match ups (mind you a lot of neutral ones though). Unfortunately from what he has brought no one deals particularly well with the fearsome Heavenbringer. In fact we already saw what Regigigas could do to a Colossoil and Gardevoir is no doubt already having nightmares about that Heavy Slam. I guess it will be up to Canis to play with some trickery and engineer match ups best to his favour. In fact I bet the coin toss will go a ways towards kicking that whole saga off..

Knowing full well that nothing on the opposing team holds a strong advantage over his Boiling Lizard it's an obvious lead choice for Maxim. This leaves Canis with no choice but to send out the only mon he brought with him that isn't totally wrecked by Pyroak in Gardevoir. Even she is only able to manage a neutral match up but lets not forget she's still a Mega Gardevoir so there's that.

After opting to go with a defensive item on Pyroak Maxim also employs a defensive strategy and sends a little Worry Seed across the way to mess with Medley's abilities and ensure that she can't perform the Skill Swap based substitutions Canis so carefully thought out in attempts to make Pyroak a little wary of using its strongest weapons. What I mean is that a Pokemon will find it hard to Skill Swap Telepathy off itself when it doesn't seem to even have the ability any more. Unfortunately for Maxim some stupid rule change means that Medley just flat out ignores the substitution as a result rather than struggling at the confusing orders and Gardevoir is able to win the damage race even without any trickery. Boiling Lizard is still in good shape thanks to that massive starting HP stat but Maxim will need to be careful to protect it given its obvious importance in this match.

In a no doubt frustrating round for Canis he has to sit and watch while Maxim butchers the second order advantage only to win the round thanks to sheer dumb luck. After Simon leads off with a rather impressive bit of Foul Play Maxim responds with a very dicey combination. Using DynamicPunch in a combo isn't unheard of and it is usually a way to boost the otherwise shaky accuracy of the move, however boosting it to a mere 70% hit chance isn't exactly what I'd call a sure thing. Never the less the move hits true and while it deals a decent amount less than just two Hammer Arms would have Maxim gets his first lucky break with a clutch 3 action confusion. Of course this then means Simon spends the rest of the round smacking himself in the face repeatedly. At least on the other end of the field Gimle is doing equal amounts of nothing. Sure the cooldown was necessary but I can't help but feel blocking the massive narwhal in was absolutely a great move when Maxim can't initiate a consecutive switch phase anyhow. Especially when punching the prone Colossoil square in the face was in the pool of conceivable options.

After spending almost the entirety of last round watching Simon smack himself in the fact Canis is determined to peg back some of the momentum this time around, even if that means relying on expensive and resisted damaging evasive moves to avoid getting smacked in the face by Gimle. Well at least Maxim finally learned that was the best coarse of action. Simon indeed succeeds in bouncing over the top of Gimle for some little bits of scratch damage and I suppose that one hit he did take from an Ice Punch while he opened himself up to deliver a U-Turn hurt enough to prove that it wasn't an entirely silly way to play it. Now to see how well Canis can manage to play Aegislash against Metagross while ordering first. I won't exactly say I'm confident for him.

Despite the fact that a first to order Aegislash leaves itself largely open to get whacked on those Rank 2 defences Maxim feels that Canis has made far too solid a set of substitutions to deal with. Coupled with the fact that Dusk Stone SE STAB Ghost moves from Aegislash hit like a truck. So instead the giant Mega Metagross just jumps around the room at a rather fast speed then Blocks the ghostly sword in to allow someome else to take the lead. Hey, at least Block was of some use this time but Maxim did give up almost all of his HP lead and quite a bit of momentum.

Back to Pyroak. Opponent cannot counterswitch due to Block.

If King's Shield, then use Substitute (15) the first instance and Leech Seed the second. Do not use this sub consecutively.
[Do Once] If Head Smash, then use Iron Defense and push actions back.
If Reflect is up when you are to move, then alternate Lava Plume and Inferno for each instance.

Without pushing back, I can keep my damage to a minimum.
King's Shield > Substitute (15) > Rock Slide
And I still haven't gotten you to throw out Regigigas. I'm pretty screwed.

Flat out had no clue I was up in this one, apologies.

With some clever defensive plays Galatine and Canis are able to play around the horrible type disadvantage and mitigate their damage taken substantially. While the majority of hits for the round were taken by substitutes the one full force blow the Aegislash had to take was cleverly manoeuvred to be not only one with less power but Canis ensured she was in her Shield Forme to take it. However by all was said and done Galatine was still hanging her proverbial balls out in Blade Forme and Maxim eeked further ahead in the damage race. It might be time for Canis to put it all on the line and see if risk begats reward.

Requesting patience until at most tomorrow afternoon, uni schedule did not allow almost any leeway for ordering (and the DQ warning hour is when I have uni).

You can't, Block was used A2 by Metagross a couple rounds ago, meaning you still have one action of block left.

Inb4 I get boned by yet another ruling I forgot about.

Figures.

Well...I get the feeling that he's just trying to bait out Metagross here, but I've gotta send him in.
