PS! Art Room Contest: Movie Poster

No, we're not dead yet! The art room contests are back and betterer then ever! Not an active member of the PS Art room? No problem, this contest is open to everyone who wants to draw Pokemon.

Submission Deadline: CONTEST ENDED. NO FURTHER SUBMISSIONS WILL BE SCORED

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to invent a Pokemon-related movie and produce a poster which effectively depicts its concept. The movie can be whatever you want, whether it be like an official Pokemon movie or a re-enactment of the plot of another movie only with Pokemon. However, try to keep in mind how much plot can be shown in a single frame. Not sure if your idea is a good one? Stop by the Art Room and discuss your ideas with others.

Contest Guidelines

In a compromise between our last two contests, this prompt will require the artist to make both composition and design choices to effectively create hype for the fictitious movie. Here are some things movie posters usually include that you might want to consider:
  • Aspect ratio: Most movie posters have an aspect ratio of either 1:0.66 or 1:0.675; this is not a requirement, but if you wish to use them to find the width, simply multiply the height by either 0.66 or 0.675
  • Cast: The most common element of movie posters to show is the main character(s). If you include a character in your poster try to encapsulate their personality the best you can.
  • Setting: If a movie takes place in a setting that is important to the plot or just otherwise interesting, posters will often try to show this by including key background points that could show where and when the movie takes place.
  • Tone: One can often tell the genre of a movie by from just the poster. The saturation, luminance, and contrast of the colors can go far in identifying the tone of the movie. The person looking at the poster should be able to tell if the movie is an action movie, comedy, drama, etc.
  • Title: Of course, a movie poster is an advertisement, and it wouldn't be a very good one if it didn't say what the title of the movie is! Try to think of creative ways to format the text to help show the tone of the movie.
  • Focal Point: To maximize the effectiveness of the ad, the composition of most movie posters is structured in such a way that it draws the attention to one point in the poster in order to catch your attention. Do your best to make your poster both noticeable and memorable.
This contest gives an advantage to those who create digital art, especially with the text requirement, but if you wish to create a movie poster through traditional mediums, your submission will be scored in such a way that takes into account the additional challenges of doing this contest traditionally.

Re-creating an existing movie poster or movie concept with Pokemon is allowed. However, it will be more difficult to score full points on creativity.

Submission Formatting:
  • This thread is for posting submissions only. Discuss the contest and entries elsewhere.
  • No limit on the number of submissions per person.
  • Each poster must have a movie title included within the poster itself.
  • The movie titled must also be the first text typed into your post. (preferably bolded)
  • Images should be put within [ hide][/hide] tags. (instructions further down).
  • You can include a written explanation of your movie in your post. However, keep in mind that the more the poster can speak for itself the better.

Scoring Criteria: (out of 100)
  • Creativity (25)
  • Use of Composition (20)*
  • Use of Design (15)**
  • Clarity of Plot / Concept (30)
  • Level of Finish (10)

Can we get a deadline extension into late may so that us college students have time to make something? This is a bit of an intensive contest so an extended timeframe would be awesome.

The Genie in the Mirror

This movie, as shown in the poster, is centered around Tornadus-Therian. The plot will follow Tornadus as he follows a journey trying to get back to Earth, after being banished to the Sky Realm. However, the only way he can accomplish this is by resolving his feuds, and angers, and reaching through the Glass of Reveal!

Pokemon Conquest
dpkRsGQ.png

This movie is based on the game Pokemon Conquest. The plot revolves around different warlords of the types battling to conquer the opposing lord's land and claim it as their own, for their own personal reasons. In this poster, it depicts the oncoming battle of Queen Palutena and King Xene, two of the 18 warlords/ladies. (It's in black and white for an old-time war movie style)

The Gallant Blade

However, from the Ralts Village, one little Ralts decides to take matters into his own hands. Yami No Sora (闇の空)
(In English: Darker Skies)

Two years following an event called The Holon Catastrophe, Seru, a Jirachi who was cast through dimensions from the desolate Torn World, gets captured by IRON, a branch of the notorious organization Rocket. Seven years later, 21 year old Arashi Tsuwabuki and his Gardevoir fiancé Midori, who are human affairs experts, activists for human/Pokemon rights, and survivors of the Holon Catastrophe, become the champions of the Hoenn region with the belief it will gain them more influence within their terribly corrupt society. However, when a mysterious doppelganger of Arashi appears and frees the most dangerous and elusive prisoner of IRON, from the same horrific experimentation facility that Seru resides in who goes by the nickname Spirit, things start to change. Arashi seemed to have no relation to IRON or Spirit, but now Tetsuo, IRON's leader, becomes quite interested in him. Now it becomes clear that Seru and Arashi are far more connected than either of them would have thought and their fates quickly become intertwined. Seru, who seeks revenge against Tetsuo, and Arashi, who wishes to create a better world for Midori and his half-pokemon stepsister have clashing ideals and methods but must work together regardless. Both of them must be prepared to face the troubles ahead, but also their own pasts together under the ominously darkening skies that eternally seem to be looming overhead.

Note: The Pokemon in my poster are made more humanoid to display their human attributes and show that some kinds (in this world) are hardly any different from people. In fact, some species can simply be thought of as another race of people rather than animals. But like our world, discrimination occurs and some people treat them like animals. This of course doesn't include all Pokemon; it only applies to species that already look like humans. If I were to draw something like Salamence in regards to this series then it would look even more like a monster. Don't think of this as your typical Pokemon world.

Completely Rushed Poster

Completely BS Synopsis
The Pokemon world is a magnificent place, a setting where people can battle, trade, and befriend monsters. One of the core mechanics in this world is being able to store them within the digital world, where the Pokemon within it frolic around in Digital Space, a completely separate world from those of humans.
This would be the norm, until one day, many Pokemon within PC's began to disappear, having been kidnapped by a mysterious band of hackers known as the "Trojans". Unlike kidnapping in the real world, where it was reasonable to get Pokemon back easily, the Digital Space is a world not many look into, even baffling the current scientists as well.
This is the story of Nia, the world's first human-based AI, and the birth of the eccentric Pokemon, Porygon-Z. Together, they tackle thefts within Digital Space under the team name of "The Datascapers".

Alright, there weren't very many entries to this contest, but it was a fun one none-the-less. All of the entries were rather good and it was fun to read your plots. c:

Anyways, here are the winners:

1st: KAIZA (93.0/100)
I love this piece. Let me break down why. The way it commands itself like a true movie poster would draws me in. The emotion displayed on each of the Pokemon's faces is amazing, like they arent static, they have feelings. They are feeling something. I See a lot of personification for Rhydon, I dont know why he's cowardly but I can see it all over his face and hos body. Im getting to know these characters just by looking at them! Also Gallade Cage killed it for me. Literally cannot look at this without chuckling and wanting this to be real.

Congratulations on winning first place, well done! ~Jac

2nd: Nightmare Serum (85.3/100)
What an interesting plot, I have to say. This poster does a fantastic job drawing visual attention with it's shocking images, which while probably a bit much for a real movie poster still got the job done at making it eye-catchy. The real strength of this poster definitely comes from it's ability to explain the plot entirely visually - There's little to no doubt what these Pokemon are doing and when you realize they're all traded-to-evolve it makes it easy to infer their motives. Having this sort of character definition within even just a single frame, show a cast, and imply a plot with such little imagery is pretty impressive, even if the artistic execution isn't completely backing it up. I'd also like to mention that the text stylizing (mostly the 'x's) give even the title of the movie personality which matches the overall theme and feel.

Overall a very creative idea and solid entry; congratulations on second place. ~SolarisFox

3rd: Trickster (85.0/100)
This poster really nailed it with its composition - the focus is in the centre with the main characters, where a few elements branch off: Jirachi's dress, the lady in black's hair, and the tree all take our eyes for a trip around the poster, letting us view every last corner of it. The dynamics, combined with the colour scheme, make it very dark and moody - it's ominous and menacing, and really feels like it has a deep, rich, plot behind it.

The stippled effect used for the movie title didn't work out well, however; it might have gone a lot better if plain text was used instead.

Congratulations on winning third place! ~Otter Power

Honorable mention: Modeling Clay
This entry was an amazing Mystery Dungeon poster. I was truly blown away with how many aspects of the game you managed to put in here and still have it be just overall pleasant to look at. It was my personal favorite entry and the points lost on creativity were the only things holding it back. That being said, even though it didn't win the contest, I'm glad you made it because it's super cool. ~SolarisFox
