Challenge The Speed Run Challenge

The Speed Run Challenge

A few years ago, My friend and I went head to head in a speed run of pokemon sapphire. I demolished him with a awful time of 8:58. At the time (long before I began competitive pokemon) we thought this time was insane, however after looking up what the fastest speed run in sapphire was, our moral quickly dropped. Last summer, I decided to give it another shot (with my new-found pokemon knowledge) just for fun, and ended up with a solid time of 3:21. This led me to wonder about what the great smogonites had achieved in terms of speed runs. After searching for a while I was unable to find a thread on speed runs, so I made this one. So, without further adieu, I present to you- The Speed Run Challenge.

The Speed Run Challenge is a very simple challenge; you complete a game as quickly as you can. "Completing" the game consists of beating the pokemon league champion and everything before it, but no postgame. Even though this challenge is very simple, it can be extremely fun and also extremely stressful at times. Here are the rules!

Rules:
-You may only use pokemon within your game (so no trading, wonder trading, etc.)
-You may use anything that you have access to in your game (including pokemon, items, etc.)
-You may not use any cheats, roms, or hacks.

As I said, this is a very simple (though not easy) challenge. Many rules that apply to other challenges do not apply here, so here is a basic list of things that you CAN do.

You CAN:
-Use as many or as few Pokemon as you like, including legendaries when you get them.
-Save or use the Pokemon center as much as you please (although this will undoubtedly slow you down).

The point of this thread is to take on The Speed Run Challenge, post how well/badly you did, and then discuss possible ways that you could do things better for next time or talk about what worked surprisingly well. After this thread gets a decent amount of posts I will post a leaderboard for the top speed runs in each game. However, a confirmation picture will be needed for very fast speed runs to assure validity. Also, remember to specify which game you speed ran.

No matter what level of speed runner you are, feel free to post your accomplishments or ask for advice from others.

I will start this thread out with my sapphire speed run. I do not currently have a picture, but my final time was 3:21. I wasn't super serious about going as fast as possible at the time, so I chose blaziken as my starter. The majority of the game I solo'd with blaziken until I caught kyogre, where upon I solo'd with him. Some problems with my run was that I saved too often, which added a lot of time in the end, and I made some poor decisions in regard to the routes that I chose, many times going the long way. I will talk more about mine, but I would like to here others experiences first.

A live speedrunning challenge would be cool WaffleTitan.
There are some minor aspects that we can improve to get faster than the worldrecord in ORAS.
But then again I´m slow as fuck at button mashing so I´m not a contender for the next record.

I spent a couple of days running the Blue glitched category (http://wiki.pokemonspeedruns.com/index.php/Pokémon_Red/Blue/Glitched_No_Save_Corruption) and got it down to 22 minutes in-game time. But it's a seriously dumb category, since there isn't much skill involved.
Haha, nice, I didn't even know that was a thing! I just looked at the link you posted and it actually does look quite challenging (with all the specific stuff you have to get just right). And 22 minutes is pretty darn speedy.

Not a contender for the next record...yet;) But anyway, great idea! I'll see what I can do to get a live speedrunning challenge going.

If we can get around a dozen or half dozen people, I would definetly be down for setting up a speedrun competition in google hangout or something similar. If anyone wants in, please post that you want to join and also what game we should speedrun as a group. Anyone can join, even if you are not a great speedrunner!

Speedrunning isn't all about records - and it can take years of practice to get a world record in a game with significant speedrunning history. But challenging your own PB or racing other people can still be fun. The great thing with Pokemon is that there are quite a lot of variants you can do, such as running randomisers, speedrunning using a particular Pokemon for battling, or even so-called "bingos" (where you are given a randomly generated bingo card with a series of objectives and you have to fill in a row or column of your choosing) - and these make you think on your feet a bit rather than painstakingly learning a route and grinding it out over and over.

Yo, just bumping this page to highlight that a runner called shenanagans (http://www.twitch.tv/shenanagans_) is running the super-glitchy Pokemon Blue "Catch 'em All" category at Summer Games Done Quick (www.twitch.tv/gamesdonequick), at 4:15 AM GMT on Saturday 1st August. If you've never seen the run before, it's well worth the watch, and it's probably better in a marathon setting where there will be commentary so you can have some idea of what is actually going on. The scheduling is okay for Americans but for Europeans it's pretty awkward; however, the run will be put up on Youtube pretty quickly if you can't watch it live.

And as a bonus (if they're running ahead of schedule), he's going to do a short blindfolded run. That should be a laugh.

Awesome! Will definetly watch!

My record (Omega Ruby) was about eight hours of playtime. In my current X run, I'm at the Snowbelle City Gym in about five and a half right now.

Hey, I'm just bumping this thread seeing as summer is coming up and there seemed to be some interest in this thread awhile back. Once summer begins, I'm going to do a few speed runs and I was wondering if anyone else has any results they would like post from any game along with any other news or strategy on speed runs. And remember, it does not matter how fast your run took (, as it's more about having fun and striving for a pb, so all are welcome to post here. If we get a few times I'll set up a leaderboard.

Early heads-up: the Pokemon Speedrunning community (http://www.pokemonspeedruns.com/) are doing a marathon next weekend, August 12th - 14th. It's mainly main-series games, with a few side games and even a rom-hack, from a bunch of the best runners of the games.

Twitch page: https://www.twitch.tv/team/psr
Schedule: https://horaro.org/psrm2016/marathon

One run that particularly interests me is the "two games, one controller (2G1C)" run by megotsthis. The set-up is that a controller is wired into two GameBoy Players containing Pokemon Red & Pokemon Blue, so that the same controller input is fed into each of them. The runner then tries to beat both games as quickly as possible. Sometimes the runner will have to try and do two completely different things in the two games, using the same controller input. Should be an impressive watch.

The two game run is gonna be interesting. I've seen it done in other game series, but mostly 2d platformers. Looks like they got that schedule booked tight. Hopefully I can learn some new strategies for it!

It's like that NES mario TAS where they played SMB, Lost Levels, SMB2, and SMB3 on the same console. It was, of course, tool-assisted though.
I think they did that with Mega Man X, too.
And why did they have name it so the acronym is 2G1C...

EDIT: To actually contribute something to this thread, here you go:
My PB for Red/Blue No Save Corruption (I only have Red, which is 15 sec slower...) is just over 19 minutes, I think. Other than that, I have tried many Pokemon speedruns but haven't run them regularly, including

Yellow Catch 'Em All
Gold Any%
Gold Any% Glitchless
FireRed Any%
FireRed Elite 4 Round 2
Emerald Any% Glitchless
X Any%

My favorite Pokemon game to speedrun is Gold (Any%), because RSE is too fast-paced (dumb mach bike) and the others take too long.

The only other thing I really speedrun is the Arena in Kirby Super Star Ultra. My best time is (hold on, let me get out my DS) 6:04:57 and my time for the True Arena is 6:08:57.

Of course I'm going on vacation to somewhere with no wifi on the day PSR Marathon starts...

Well at least they have a YouTube channel where they upload all their runs.

Haha, I didn't even know Pokemon dash existed until I watched the speedrun. May or may not have been a waste of 37 minutes of my life, but the main series speedrun a surely are not.
