[STABmons] Darkrai

[OVERVIEW]

Given its unique traits, it is no surprise Darkrai stands out in the STABmons metagame. Possessing a fantastic base 125 Speed which allows it to outpace many relevant threats in STABmons, Darkrai can function against both offensive and defensive teams, meaning it's never dead weight against any specific archetype. It also has a great Special Attack stat and a STAB type that is resisted by few, allowing it to punch holes in teams that aren't prepared for it. Dark Void means it can usually put its best switch-in to sleep, and Bad Dreams allows it to get chip damage on walls after doing so. However, while not frail, Darkrai dislikes taking too many hits due to its subpar defensive typing, and it neither resists any notable priority moves except Sucker Punch nor has the Speed to outrun most Choice Scarf users, meaning it is easy to revenge kill. Darkrai also loathes status, given paralysis takes away its best asset and both Toxic and Will-O-Wisp cut its Nasty Plot sweeps short. In addition, given that Dark Pulse is rather weak for a main attacking move, Darkrai's base 135 Special Attack can be rather deceiving.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Dark Pulse is Darkrai's main STAB move, sporting a significant 20% flinch chance and hitting much of the metagame for at least neutral damage. Night Daze is an alternative STAB move with a secondary effect that stacks up well with Substitute, but it has imperfect accuracy and fewer PP. Dark Void allows Darkrai to put its best check to sleep, using it as setup fodder in the process. Nasty Plot increases Darkrai's damage output and takes advantage of free turns granted by Dark Void. Substitute allows Darkrai to stop both Topsy-Turvy from Sableye and Transform from Chansey, in addition to stopping otherwise detrimental status moves. It is, however, difficult to find time to use it against more offensive teams. Focus Blast, on the other hand, is a coverage option to hit Tyranitar, Terrakion, and most Steel-types, but it sacrifices Darkrai's ability to dismantle defensive teams. Taunt is an alternative to Substitute that allows Darkrai to beat Chansey 100% of the time and stops status, but it makes Darkrai vulnerable to revenge killing and means it can be stopped by Sableye.

Set Details
========

Leftovers ensures Darkrai has maximum longevity and can continue using Substitute, as a power boost isn't really required. Life Orb, however, should be used if Focus Blast is selected, as without Substitute or Taunt the longevity granted by Leftovers becomes far less useful. Maximum Special Attack and Speed EVs optimize Darkrai's effectiveness against offensive teams, while 4 Special Defense EVs give Download Porygon2 an Attack boost, which it does not appreciate.

Usage Tips
========

Darkrai's Nasty Plot set functions as a wallbreaker, breaking down defensive cores which rarely have anything to deal with Darkrai behind a Substitute once their main counter has been put to sleep. It is generally wise to delay using Dark Void, as the opponent will likely try to lure you into putting something other than their counter to sleep in order to be able to stop Darkrai. Use Substitute if you think a foe has Toxic or Thunder Wave, as both of these moves cripple Darkrai. It is also wise to find time to use Substitute if you know your opponent has a Fake Out + Extreme Speed user that can kill Darkrai. Finally, try not to directly switch Darkrai in, as it requires a fair bit of HP in order to pull off a sweep.

Team Options
========

Sweepers that benefit from the removal or weakening of special walls, such as Thundurus, are excellent choices as partners. Entry hazards from Pokemon such as Ferrothorn help with the effectiveness of this set, as usually your opponent will be switching around to try to sleep fodder something. Lunar Dance on the other hand is an unmerciful move that is often too much for defensive teams to handle, given Darkrai is already difficult to stop once. Good users of Lunar Dance include Latios and Jirachi. Defog support from Pokemon such as Landorus-T is appreciated as Darkrai doesn't really enjoy passive damage and Toxic Spikes completely ruins this set. Pivots such as Landorus-T and Chansey can get Darkrai into play safely and thus are very helpful for Darkrai. A good Tyranitar switch-in such as Landorus-T is also helpful for Darkrai if it isn't running Focus Blast, as after Dark Void has been used Tyranitar can steal all of Darkrai's momentum.

[SET]

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Switcheroo cripples Chansey and Porygon2, both of which otherwise switch in for free. Dark Pulse is Darkrai's main STAB move, which while lacking in Base Power, does massive damage to offensive teams when backed up by Choice Specs and Darkrai's base 135 Special Attack. Focus Blast hits Tyranitar, Terrakion, and Dark-types, which can evade the 2HKO from Dark Pulse. Sludge Bomb is Darkrai's coverage option for Fairy-types, which comfortably switch into this set otherwise. Dark Void is another option in the last slot and puts Darkrai's main switch-in to sleep, accumulating Bad Dreams damage against it in the process, but then Darkrai misses out on covering Fairy-types, which can be problematic. Parting Shot is also a usable option that helps accumulate entry hazard damage on Darkrai's checks while keeping you in a good position.

Set Details
========

Choice Specs turns Darkrai into a very powerful revenge killer capable of outspeeding and OHKOing many common Pokemon found on offensive teams with Dark Pulse. Maximum Speed and Special Attack EVs optimize Darkrai's effectiveness against offensive teams, while 4 Special Defense EVs give Download Porygon2 an Attack boost, which it does not appreciate.

Usage Tips
========

Choice Specs Darkrai should be used as a revenge killer, as it outspeeds almost all non-Choice Scarf Pokemon in the metagame. Dark Pulse should be spammed against offensive teams, as many teams have little that can switch into it. Dark Void should be used against Pokemon that resist Dark and would otherwise give Darkrai a hard time, as after switching out and getting Darkrai in again at some point in the future, the combination of Bad Dreams damage and Dark Pulse damage on your opponent's counter will likely be too much for it to handle. Switcheroo should be used to cripple Chansey and Porygon2, both of which would otherwise be very solid counters to this set. Against teams without them, it is usually not advised to Trick Darkrai's Choice Specs unless you need something crippled, as Darkrai needs the power Choice Specs provides. Try not to switch Darkrai into anything directly, as its bulk is not extraordinary.

Team Options
========

Pivots such as Landorus-T and Chansey, which can get Darkrai into play safely, are very helpful for Darkrai, and entry hazard support is greatly appreciated, as Darkrai tends to force many switches. Fast cleaners that take advantage of holes Darkrai leaves in teams such as Fake Out + Extreme Speed users and Mega Sceptile make for great partners for Darkrai. In addition, because Choice-locked Darkrai can invite sweepers that resist its attack to set up on it, Pokemon such as Ditto, Sableye, and the aforementioned Fake Out + Extreme Speed users are useful for their ability to stop setup Pokemon.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Night Daze is an alternative to Dark Pulse on the Choice Specs set that is slightly stronger but possesses fewer PP, unreliable accuracy, and a worse secondary effect. Thunderbolt and Ice Beam are decent coverage options, but they only hit a few noteworthy foes. Will-O-Wisp is a useful option for burning most of Darkrai's switch-ins such as Tyranitar and could be used on a double status set alongside Dark Void. Finally, Choice Scarf is an option that allows Darkrai to outspeed the entire metagame and still cripple walls with Switcheroo.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tyranitar**: Once something has been put to sleep, Tyranitar fully counters the mono-attacking set and is a very solid switch-in to Dark Pulse for the Choice Specs set, but it has to watch out for Focus Blast.

**Choice Scarf Terrakion**: Terrakion laughs at—and gains attacks boosts from—Dark Pulse from the mono-attacking set and is also a solid switch-in to the Choice Specs set, but like Tyranitar it has to watch out for Focus Blast.

**Fairy-types**: Even asleep, Unaware Clefable can take on the mono-attacking set comfortably. Togekiss can switch into Dark Pulse and Focus Blast and use Darkrai as setup fodder. Azumarill, on the other hand, can come in on Dark Pulse and Focus Blast and then threaten to OHKO Darkrai with Play Rough. All Fairy-types have to watch out for a potential Sludge Bomb, however.

**Fake Out + Extreme Speed Users**: Fake Out + Extreme Speed users can easily revenge Darkrai if it doesn't have a Substitute up.

**Fighting-types with Mach Punch**: Pokemon such as Breloom, Conkeldurr, Terrakion, and Mega Medicham can all revenge kill Darkrai courtesy of its weakness to Fighting.

**Whirlwind Chansey**: Once something has been put to sleep, Chansey with Whirlwind can fully counter the Nasty Plot set. It can't switch into the Choice Specs set because of Trick, however.

Hello, Kl4ng, here's a QC check for you!

Overview

Mention that, while it's not exactly frail, it doesn't appreciate taking many hits because its defensive typing is not very good. This includes priority in the form of Extreme Speed, Bullet Punch, or Ice Shard. Mach Punch isn't incredibly common, so I don't think it deserves a mention really.
Another way you could put the above is that it's easily revenge killed through priority and Choice Scarf users, either way works really. It's up to you to decide which you like more.
Mention how it's very susceptible to status if not behind a Substitute. Thunder Wave cripples it to the point of not being useful in a match, as does Sleep. Toxic means it can't set up Substitute repeatedly, and neither can it under Burn.

Mono Attacker

Set Comments

Moves: Possibly mention Dark Pulse's flinch chance. Mention Taunt in Moves as well, as this lets it beat Chansey 100% of the time and is a useful move in general. Looks solid otherwise.

Set Details: Looks good, nothing much to change because Darkrai's pretty easy going.

Usage Tips: Looks good!

Team Options: Healing Wish shouldn't be used when Lunar Dance exists, so fix that tiny thing. Also, they need to be specific. Which Lunar Dance users go well with it? What Defog users? Let the reader know.

Choice Specs

Move Switcheroo to slot one, and move everything else down one. So Switcheroo | Dark Pulse | Sludge Bomb | Focus Blast / Dark Void.

Set Comments

Moves: The first bullet is misleading with the Overview. You hype it up here, but make it seem mediocre in the Overview. Something should change to either hype it more in the Overview, or to make it say it's not super powerful without Choice Specs. Mention Parting Shot here as well, it's great to pivot.

Set Details: Good, good.

Usage Tips: Mention what to use Switcheroo against, and what you are able to use Dark Void against. Can you use it without tricking the Choice Specs? Does it leave Darkrai too vulnerable? Explain.

Team Options: Good! I was gonna say that Mega Sceptile is a good partner, but you're one step ahead of me! :p

Strategy Comments

Other Options: Choice Scarf needs a mention. It's cool because you can Switcheroo that, and you can also outspeed every other Choice Scarf user so that's pretty cool. Also, mention a Swords Dance set with Knock Off / Sucker Punch / Poison Jab hits a lot of the tier really hard, and it catches Pokemon off guard. Subpar option, but Knock Off is really powerful and the priority is strong as well. For example, it does around 50% to a Tyranitar. That's pretty cool if you ask me!

Checks & Counters: Looks solid.
Implement this and consider your analysis...

QC 1/3

Mono Attacker
Set Comments
Moves:
  • I know it's "mono attacker", but I'd like to see a coverage move slashed in on the fourth slot and change it to "Nasty Plot Sweeper"
  • When talking about substitute, let the readers know that you'll be hard pressed to find a turn that your able to set it up, since, unless they stay in with their sleeping pokemon, you only have one free turn before your faced with their best check to Darkrai
Set Details:
  • Slash in or mention a life orb so you have more immediate power if setting up a nasty plot isn't an option at the moment (i.e. if you know that they're going into something that can eat a +2 Dark Pulse after the Dark void or a FakeSpeeder, and just need damage off on it)
Usage Tips:
  • Change the description of substitute to also mention beating FakeSpeed
Team Options:
  • VoltTurnShot makes this work really well, and sleeping a key Scizor switch in can be a huge advantage
Choice Specs
Set Comments
Moves:
  • Since there really only two fairies in the tier, Clefable and Togekiss, and one isn't that common and one won't be used as a primary switch-in on you, switch Focus Blast and Sludge Bomb, as steels are a more relevant type to hit SE
Usage Tips:
  • I dislike talking about this as a revenge killer, because all the relevent sweepers that need revenge killing either boost their speed or utilize priority. It does work well as a wallbreaker though, hitting with strong moves off the less common attacking stat and has switcheroo to beat Chansey
Team Options:
  • Switch specific mention of Stoutland to general FakeSpeeders
Strategy Comments
Other Options:
  • Remove the mention of a Swords Dance set. Setup is already hard to pull off with the amount of outs there are to it (Sableye, FakeSpeed, Unaware), and physical boosting on a special attacker in a tier more prepared for physical sweepers is not viable
  • I'd like to see Life Orb get its own specific set since it operates just as a good, powerful late game cleaner and early game nuisance much better than either listed set does, but I'll leave that decision up to you or QC 3.
  • I dislike the idea of a Will-O-Wisp Darkrai, since you won't be able to burn the FakeSpeeders, which are generally the most threatening physical attackers, although I could see its merits of bluffing a setup set and burning the switch in
Checks & Counters:
  • FakeSpeed must be stressed here, as it is the most convenient and easy way to come in and revenge kill Darkrai- This could be physical priority in general, since Azumarill, Scizor, and Talonflame all are decent checks to a Darkrai as well
  • I'd like to see Chansey mentioned here, since whirlwind variants can beat sets not carrying taunt or trick
  • Chesnaught is effective, but I'm not sure if its vaible enough outside of this to merit its very own tab
  • Fighting Types should be added, since the more common ones (Breloom, Conkeldurr, Terrakion, Mega-Cham) all have room to run Mach punch, and/or can shrug off most things thrown at them
  • Thundurus Deserves its own slot because of priority Thunder wave, and even the rare sleep talk
  • Togekiss can turn Choice-locked variants into setup fodder
  • Azumarill may deserve its own mention, but should definitely be mentioned by name when discussing revenge killers

Implemented everything but the following, which I both highly disagree with:

I dislike talking about this as a revenge killer, because all the relevent sweepers that need revenge killing either boost their speed or utilize priority. It does work well as a wallbreaker though, hitting with strong moves off the less common attacking stat and has switcheroo to beat Chansey
Specs Darkrai's main draw is it can come in on most of the tier after something has died and threaten an OHKO with Dark Pulse or one of its coverage moves, so I'd say it's a revenge killer. Base 125 speed outspeeds practically everything except Aero that isn't scarfed or has priority, and when combined with its power I don't see how it doesn't possess the capacity to revenge kill. You don't need to be revenge killing sweepers, you know - and if revenge killers were limited to Pokemon that could come in and force out Scizor after a Shift Gear and Belly Drummed FakeSpeeders the list would pretty much be Ditto.

Thundurus Deserves its own slot because of priority Thunder wave, and even the rare sleep talk
I don't really get this since Thundurus just dies after using Thunder Wave, sure you've crippled Darkrai but you killed off one of your Pokemon in the process. And with Sleep Talk it has to rely on being asleep (and even then, is very unreliable).

Will write up the analysis soon.

Overview
  • Give me a good/bad/good sandwich and end the overview on a high note. "However, the combination of high Speed, Special Attack, and a reliable sleep move make it a premier special attacker and sweeper under the right circumstances and should be prepared for, otherwise it will give you NIGHTMARES!! MUAHAHAHAHA!"
Set - Nasty Plot
  • Fine!
Moves
  • I'm leaning toward moving Night Daze up here because it stacks nicely with Substitute. However, the lower PP is an issue when you're trying to sweep. I'll leave it to you ultimately to decide.
Set Details
  • Good!
Usage Tips
  • Nice!
Team Options
  • Maybe add a good Tyranitar counter here because without Focus Blast it kinda screws you.
Set - Choice Specs
  • @_@!
Moves
  • "Dark Void is another option in the last slot which puts Darkrai's main switch-in to sleep, accumulating Bad Dreams damage against it in the process, but misses out on Tyranitar which hurts." But you have Focus Blast on this set for Ttar. Reword?
  • Also mention that the status moves in the last slot are more helpful once you've Switcherood away your Choice Specs.
Set Details
  • :D!
Usage Tips
  • "Try not to switch Darkrai into anything, as its bulk is not extraordinary." Anything directly.
Team Options
  • Because Darkrai may find itself choice locked against a potential setup sweeper that resists your attack, include having a way to handle opposing setup such as Unaware, Topsy Turvy, and FakeSpeeders.
OO
  • If you move Night Daze remove it from here.
Cs & Cs
  • Combine Clefable, Azumarill, and Togekiss into **Fairy Types**. These are the three most relevant Fairies in STABmons anyway, so just lump 'em together and mention how each one checks/counters Darkrai.

Leftovers ensures Darkrai has maximum survivability longevity and can continue using Substitute, as a power boost isn't really required. Taunt is an alternative to Substitute that beats allows Darkrai to beat Chansey 100% of the time and stops status, but it makes Darkrai vulnerable to revenge killing and means it can be stopped by Sableye.

Set Details
========

Leftovers ensures Darkrai has maximum longetivity longevity and can continue using Substitute, as a power boost isn't really required. Life Orb, however, should be used if Focus Blast is selected, as without Substitute or Taunt the longetivity longevity granted by Leftovers becomes far less useful. Maximum Special Attack and Speed EVs optimize Darkrai's effectiveness against offensive teams, while 4 Special Defense EVs give Download Porygon2 an Attack boost, which it does not appreciate.

Usage Tips
========

Darkrai's Nasty Plot set functions as a wallbreaker, breaking down defensive cores, (AC) which rarely have anything to deal with Darkrai behind a Substitute once their main counter has been put to sleep.

========

Defog support from Pokemon such as Landorus-T is appreciated, (AC) as Darkrai doesn't really enjoy passive damage and Toxic Spikes completely ruins this set.

Moves

Switcheroo cripples Chansey and Porygon2, both of which otherwise switch in for free. Dark Pulse is Darkrai's main offensive STAB move, which while lacking in Base Power, does massive damage to offensive teams when backed up by Choice Specs and Darkrai's base 135 Special Attack. Focus Blast hits Tyranitar, Terrakion, and Dark-types, (AC) which can evade the 2HKO from Dark Pulse. Sludge Bomb is Darkrai's coverage option for Fairy-types, which comfortably switch into this set otherwise. Dark Void is another option in the last slot and puts Darkrai's main switch-in to sleep, accumulating Bad Dreams damage against it in the process, but it then Darkrai misses out on covering Fairy-types, which can be problematic. Parting Shot is also a usable option that helps accumulate entry hazard damage on Darkrai's checks while keeping you in a good position.

Usage Tips
========

========

Pivots such as Landorus-T and Chansey, (AC) which can get Darkrai into play safely, (AC) are very helpful for Darkrai, and entry hazard support is greatly appreciated, as Darkrai tends to force many switches.

Other Options
=============

===================

**Fairy-types**: (add hyphen) Even asleep, Unaware Clefable can take on the mono-attacking set comfortably.
