Vanilluxe

[OVERVIEW]

Vanilluxe is a powerful wallbreaker thanks to its great Special Attack, good offensive typing, and decent coverage options that allow it to hit most Pokemon for at least neutral damage. Though Vanilluxe does face competition from other Ice-types such as Cryogonal and Jynx, it sets itself apart with its decent overall bulk, which lets it take advantage of Weak Armor, and it possesses the most powerful Freeze-Dry in the tier. However, it sits in an awkward Speed tier that leaves it outsped by Mesprit and Kabutops. Its defensively horrid Ice typing doesn't help, leaving Vanilluxe weak to Stealth Rock in addition to many other common attacking types, making it difficult for it to switch in and, by extension, fully utilize Weak Armor due to its lack of resistances.

Moves
========

Ice Beam is Vanilluxe's most powerful STAB move, hitting hard when backed by Life Orb. Freeze-Dry allows Vanilluxe to hit Water-types such as Lanturn, Prinplup, Samurott, and Ludicolo super effectively. Hidden Power Ground has great type coverage alongside its Ice-type STAB moves, hitting Steel- and Fire-types such as Klinklang and Pyroar hard. Signal Beam nails Malamar and heavily damages other Psychic-types, such as Uxie, Mesprit, Musharna, and Jynx. Ice Shard allows Vanilluxe to pick off weakened foes such as Lilligant, Vivillon, and Archeops. Flash Cannon is another alternative, having superior coverage against opposing Ice-types such as Aurorus, Piloswine, and Articuno while still retaining coverage against Jynx. Autotomize is another option to manually boost Vanilluxe's Speed, but Vanilluxe has limited setup opportunities and Ice Shard and Weak Armor already make up for its lacking Speed.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack EVs allow Vanilluxe to hit as hard as possible, while maximum Speed EVs are used to allow Vanilluxe to outspeed as many Pokemon as possible. A Modest nature increases Vanilluxe's Special Attack significantly, though a Mild nature should be used if Vanilluxe is using Ice Shard to preserve its Attack. Rash is an alternative to switch into physical attacks more comfortably, thus taking more advantage of Weak Armor. Life Orb is used for the significant boost in power while allowing Vanilluxe to freely switch between its moves. Weak Armor is the ability of choice, as after a boost, Vanilluxe outspeeds Pokemon it could not before, such as Archeops, Lilligant, and Tauros.

Usage Tips
========

Vanilluxe is best used as a wallbreaker early-game, so pick the appropriate coverage move, predicting Pokemon that resist Ice to switch in to ensure it deals as much damage as possible. Try to pick the appropriate coverage move so that Vanilluxe does not get worn down too much by Life Orb recoil. Due to its lack of resistances, Vanilluxe should be brought in with U-turn and Volt Switch or after a Pokemon has fainted. Alternatively, bring in Vanilluxe against an attack that deals minimal damage, such as Rapid Spin from Claydol or U-turn from Uxie, to get a Speed boost from Weak Armor, allowing it to clean late-game.

Team Options
========

Due to Vanilluxe's vulnerablity to all entry hazards and Life Orb recoil, hazard removal is crucial. Kabutops makes for a great partner, as it has access to Rapid Spin and threatens Fire- and Rock-types with its STAB moves while Vanilluxe threatens Grass-types such as Torterra, Gourgeist, and Vileplume in return. More bulky Defog users such as Prinplup and Pelipper are also good teammates, with the latter being able to switch into Fighting-types semi-reliably. Swords Dance Samurott is another good partner, as it takes on Fire- and Rock-types, which give Vanilluxe problems, while Vanilluxe breaks past Grass-types such as Gourgeist and Vileplume, setting Samurott up for a sweep. Ground-types such as Stunfisk and Rhydon make for great partners thanks to their access to Stealth Rock as well as their ability to threaten Rock-, Steel-, and Fire-types while Vanilluxe covers their Ice-type weakness and threatens Grass-types.

Fire-types such as Magmortar and Pyroar also make for great partners, as they are both able to break through Ferroseed and other Steel-types which give Vanilluxe problems. Mesprit and Uxie pair well with Vanilluxe, as they can switch in and KO Fighting-types, which are common switch-ins to Vanilluxe. They also have access to Stealth Rock and can bring Vanilluxe in safely with U-turn. Mesprit has access to Healing Wish as well, bringing Vanilluxe back to full health if it has been crippled by status or worn down by residual damage from entry hazards and Life Orb recoil. Despite their overlapping weaknesses, other Ice-types such as Aurorus and Jynx pair well with Vanilluxe, as they wear down each other's checks and counters. Steel-types, such as Klinklang and Mawile, also are great partners, as they cover Vanilluxe's Steel- and Rock-type weaknesses, while the latter can bring Vanilluxe in safely with Baton Pass.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Hidden Power Fire is an alternative to hit Ferroseed, but it leaves Vanilluxe walled by Fire-types. Taunt is useful to cripple passive Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Prinplup, as well as prevent Pokemon from setting up entry hazards, while Magic Coat accomplishes the same thing, bouncing back hazards to the opponent's side. Frost Breath allows Vanilluxe to break past Calm Mind users, but it has the chance to miss. Explosion allows Vanilluxe to heavily damage Pokemon it cannot otherwise, especially Magmortar and Hariyama, while safely bringing in another teammate at cost of fainting. Ice Body is another option over Weak Armor if the Defense drop is unappealing, but it causes Vanilluxe to lose any cleaning potential.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-types**: Fire-types, such as Magmortar and Pyroar, can switch in on all of Vanilluxe's moves except for Hidden Power Ground; they can naturally outspeed it and revenge kill it with their STAB moves.

**Rock-types**: Rock-types such as Kabutops and Regirock are able to switch in on Ice Beam and threaten Vanilluxe with their STAB moves. Kabutops is also able to revenge kill Vanilluxe thanks to its higher Speed.

**Entry Hazards**: Vanilluxe is weak to Stealth Rock and vulnerable to all other entry hazards, making it easily worn down.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types such as Sawk, Gurdurr, and Hariyama threaten Vanilluxe with their STAB moves, though the former two are 2HKOed by Life Orb-boosted Ice Beam. Hariyama, in particular, commonly runs Assault Vest and resists Ice thanks to Thick Fat, so it easily switches in on any of Vanilluxe's moves and forces it out with Close Combat. Gurdurr can heal back damage it has taken with Drain Punch and easily picks off weakened Vanilluxe with Mach Punch.

**Steel-types**: Klinklang and Mawile threaten Vanilluxe with their STAB moves, though both cannot switch in safely due to Hidden Power Ground.

Freeze-Dry is still more important than Signal Beam or Flash Cannon on Autotomize. Bulky Water-types are more common than Piloswine and Grumpig, which are about all you beat with those coverage moves that are impossible to beat without them, whereas you can't beat any common bulky Water-type without Freeze-Dry barring maybe Carracosta. I'd prefer making Freeze-Dry the only move in the last slot of Autotomize and mention the coverage options under Moves as options over Ice Beam or Freeze-Dry. Also change the move order to Autotomize>Freeze-Dry>Ice Beam>Hidden Power Ground.

Specifically mention that Signal Beam OHKOs Sneasel, Flash Cannon hits Piloswine, and Signal Beam and Flash Cannon both hit Jynx. The stronger hit on Psychics is kind of just icing on the cake for Signal Beam.

Mention that Timid also beats Adamant Kabutops.

You don't need to outspeed Modest Ludicolo in the rain at +2 really. The spread is probably fine because you still outrun base 70s unboosted, which is important because you can nail Ludicolo and Samurott without boosting.

Good work, lemme know when you're finished with these changes.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Great Special Attack combined with a good offensive typing
  • Decent coverage options that allow it to hit every Pokemon for at least neutral damage
  • Decent bulk allows it to take advantage of Weak Armor
  • Faces stiff competition from other Ice-types such as Jynx, Cryogonal, and Articuno
  • Awkward speed tier that leaves it outsped by base 80 Speed Pokemon
  • Horrid defensive typing that gives it a weakness to Stealth Rock and only one resistance
- Overview should emphasize that fact that Vanilluxe has the strongest Freeze-Dry in the tier, as it is Vanilluxe's most notable niche over the other Ice-types in the tier.
- Stiff competition should highlight Cryogonal in particular, as it can pull off an identical set with superior Speed.
- Also mention the bad defensive typing leaves it with common weaknesses, which would make it harder to make use of Weak Armor

- Water-types that actually resist Ice Beam in the first place would make better examples (Pelipper >.>); Lanturn, Carracosta, and Prinplup are better mentions.
- At least name the Fire- and Steel-types.
- These coverage moves are mainly to hit stragglers that resist Freeze-Dry and aren't weak to Ground (or just don't take much from it, like Aurorus), such as Sneasel, Jynx, Cryogonal, Articuno, Piloswine, and others. Of course I expect you to assign the targets of the coverage moves correctly. Signal Beam hitting Malamar can be listed as a bonus.

You didn't fix up the point about Signal Beam and Flash Cannon. You'll need to state Flash Cannon's superior coverage against opposing Ice-types, while Signal Beam can cover for Malamar, a notable threat, while still netting coverage on Sneasel.

nah i'd put it in OO. I like Ice Shard the most by a large margin, helps revenge Lilligant and Vivillon and just pick off stuff in general. -Def and -SpD natures are both fine with it. -Def if you want to switch into bulky Water-types more easily, and -SpD keeps you from dying to stuff like Tauros's Rock Climb

I agree and I'd say Ice Shard should be outright slashed, I've always found it way more useful than any other filler move when I used Vanilluxe. The only thing about that is figuring out the nature slashes but Ice Shard is really good.

Does Autotomize deserve a full set btw? I tried it out but I never even clicked it once, and I still way preferred just playing it like the AoA and cleaning with something else. I see you mentioned doing that in UT but I think it's asking too much to both wallbreak early game and clean late-game.

yea you can toss Autotomize in moves for AoA imo. it's like a Rock Polish Regice that doesn't get stopped by Lanturn, which is cool, but Vanilluxe's main niche is being a terrifying wallbreaker. Ice Shard helps it enough against offensive teams that Autotomize feels kind of unnecessary.

Okay this is written then. Though I'm not sure what natures to slash when Rash, Mild, Hasty, and Naive all seem work on Vanilluxe.

Edit: I decided on slashing Mild and putting Rash in set details

Freeze-Dry allows Vanilluxe to hit Water-types such as Prinplup, Samurott, Ludicolo, Mantine, and Pelipper ik you have a bunch of examples here, but Lanturn is more relevant than most of the stuff that already takes neutral from Ice Beam. Swords Dance Samurott is another good partner, as it takes on Fire- and Rock-types that, which give Vanilluxe problems, while Vanilluxe breaks past Grass-types such as Gourgeist and Vileplume, setting Samurott up for a sweep. Ground-types such as Stunfisk and Rhydon make for great partners thanks to both being abler access to set up Stealth Rock as well as their ability to threaten Rock-, Steel-, and Fire-types while Vanilluxe covers their Ice-type weakness as well asnd threatens Grass-types.

Fire-types such as Magmortar and Pyroar also make for great partners, because bothey are both able to break through Ferroseed and other Steel-types thatwhich give Vanilluxe problems. Mesprit and Uxie pair well with Vanilluxe, as they can switch in and threatenKO Fighting-types, which are common switch-ins to Vanilluxe. They also have access to Stealth Rock and can bring Vanilluxe in safely with U-turn. Mesprit has access to Healing Wish as well, bringing Vanilluxe back to full health if it has been crippled by status or worn down by residual damage from hazards plusand Life Orb Rrecoil. Despite their overlapping weaknesses, other Ice-types such as Aurorus and Jynx pair well with Vanilluxe, as they wear down each other's checks and counters. Steel-types, such as Klinklang and Mawile, also makare great partners, as they cover Vanilluxe's Steel- and Rock-type weaknesses, while the latter can brings in Vanilluxe in safely with Baton Pass.

Hidden Power Fire is an alternative to hit Ferroseed, but it leaves Vanilluxe walled by Fire-types. Taunt is useful to cripple passive Pokemon such as Mega Audino and Prinplup, as well as prevent Pokemon from setting up hazards, while Magic Coat accomplishes the similar resultsame thing, bouncing back hazards ton the opponent's side. Frost Breath allows Vanilluxe to break past Calm Mind users, but has the chance to miss. Explosion allows Vanilluxe to heavily damage a Pokemon, in particular,t cannot otherwise, especially Magmortar and Hariyama, as whilell as safely bringing in another teammate at cost of its lifefainting. Ice Body is another option over Weak Armor if the Defense drop is unappealing, but comauses with the cost ofVanilluxe to lose any cleaning potential.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Fire-types**: Fire-types, such as Magmortar and Pyroar, can switch in on all of Vanilluxe's moves except for Hidden Power Ground,; they can naturally outspeed and revenge kill it with their STAB moves.

**Rock-types**: Rock-types such as Kabutops and Regirock are able to switch in on Ice Beam and threaten Vanilluxe with their STAB moves. Kabutops is also able to revenge kills Vanilluxe because it outhanks to its higher Speeds it naturally.

**Entry Hazards**: Vanilluxe is weak to Stealth Rock as well asnd vulnerable to all other entry hazards, making it easily wearorn down.

**Fighting-types**: Fighting-types such as Sawk, Gurdurr, and Hariyama threaten Vanilluxe with their STAB moves, though the former two are 2HKOed by Life Orb Ice Beam. Hariyama, in particular, commonly runs Assault Vest and has resists Ice duethanks to Thick Fat, so it easily switches in on any of Vanilluxe's moves and forces it out with Close Combat.

GP 2/2
[OVERVIEW]

Vanilluxe is a powerful wallbreaker thanks to its great Special Attack, good offensive typing, and decent coverage options that allow it to hit most Pokemon for at least neutral damage. Though Vanilluxe does face competition from other Ice-types such as Cryogonal and Jynx, it sets itself apart with its decent overall bulk, which lets it take advantage of Weak Armor, and it possesses as well as having the most powerful Freeze-Dry in the tier.

Moves
========

Ice Beam is Vanilluxe's most powerful STAB move, hitting hard when backed by Life Orb. Freeze-Dry allows Vanilluxe to hit Water-types such as Lanturn, Prinplup, Samurott, and Ludicolo, (RC) super effectively. Flash Cannon is another alternative, having superior coverage against opposing Ice-types such as Aurorus, Piloswine, and Articuno, (RC) while still retaining coverage against Jynx. Autotomize is another option to manually boost Vanilluxe's Speed, but Vanilluxe has limited setup opportunities and Ice Shard and Weak Armor already make up for its lacking Speed.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack EVs allow Vanilluxe to hit as hard as possible, (AC) while maximum Speed EVs are used to allow Vanilluxe to outspeed as many Pokemon as possible.

Usage Tips
========

========

Fire-types such as Magmortar and Pyroar also make for great partners, as they are both able to break through Ferroseed and other Steel-types which (if all Steel-types give Vanilluxe problems, change it to ", which". If not, change it to "that") give Vanilluxe problems.
