Tentacruel

QC Checks by : Tokyo Tom, AM, Leftiez

[OVERVIEW]

Tentacruel's good defensive typing and stats allow it to check some of the largest threats in the OU metagame such as Azumarill, Keldeo, and Clefable. However, its main claim to fame is being a Rapid Spin user that can beat Mega Sableye. It also absorbs Toxic Spikes, which are very common in the current metagame. On the flip side, Tentacruel has some common weaknesses to Electric-, Psychic-, and Ground-type moves, which substantially hinder its defensive capabilities. Tentacruel also lacks any form of reliable recovery, making it easy to wear down. It also faces competition as a Water-type Rapid Spin user from Starmie, which has reliable recovery, a much better Speed tier, and more coverage options. However, Tentacruel differentiates itself with its better support options, lack of Pursuit weakness, and some unique resistances.

[SET]
name: Support
move 1: Scald
move 2: Rapid Spin
move 3: Acid Spray
move 4: Toxic Spikes / Knock Off
ability: Liquid Ooze / Rain Dish
item: Black Sludge
evs: 248 HP / 216 Def / 28 SpD / 16 Spe
nature: Timid

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Scald has a high chance to burn the target, which makes physical attackers reluctant to switch into Tentacruel. Rapid Spin is Tentacruel's main perk over other bulky Water-types and provides immense support to its team. Acid Spray lowers a target's Special Defense by two stages, allowing Tentacruel to beat Mega Sableye and use Rapid Spin, while also checking Calm Mind users. Toxic Spikes cripples opposing grounded Pokemon upon switching in, pressuring them with residual damage each turn. Knock Off provides huge utility and allows Tentacruel to beat Gengar faster. Haze is also an option as it allows Tentacruel to reliably check Belly Drum Azumarill by removing Azumarill's boosts. Protect can be used for scouting Choice-locked moves and gaining an extra turn of Black Sludge recovery, as well as getting an extra turn of Toxic damage on the opponent. Sludge Wave hits Fairy-types for super effective damage.

Set Details
========

Both of Tentacruel's abilities are situational. Liquid Ooze is preferred, as it punishes the use of HP draining moves such as Leech Seed and Giga Drain. However, Rain Dish can be used on rain teams for semi-reliable recovery. Black Sludge provides passive recovery. The EV spread makes sure that Tentacruel avoids the 2HKO from Life Orb Gengar's Shadow Ball and Modest Mega Charizard Y's Fire Blast or Solar Beam after Stealth Rock 100% of the time, while still retaining a respectable physical bulk that allows it to check physical attackers such as Azumarill. 16 Speed EVs and a Timid nature allow Tentacruel to outspeed neutral-natured Mega Altaria and max Speed base 70s such as Breloom, Adamant Diggersby, and almost all versions of defensive Landorus-T.

Usage Tips
========

Tentacruel should be switched in on resisted attacks or on Pokemon that are checked by it such as Azumarill and Mega Altaria. Even though Tentacruel has respectable bulk, do not try to switch it into unresisted attacks, especially if you absolutely need entry hazards gone, as it is prone to getting worn down easily due to lack of recovery and constant switching into entry hazards. If an opponent has a Ghost-type, then it is preferable to not use Rapid Spin immediately. Before using Toxic Spikes, assess the opposing team. If it has too many Pokemon immune to them or a grounded Poison-type, it is preferable to not use Toxic Spikes at all. Also, use only one layer if your opponent is using an offensive team, as regular poison will result in more damage short-term.

Team Options
========

Tentacruel fits well on balance and stall teams. Mega Sableye has great synergy with Tentacruel, as it is immune to Psychic-type attacks and Tentacruel in return resists Fairy. Mega Sableye can also block Rapid Spin for Toxic Spikes set up by Tentacruel and also benefits from Toxic Spikes support when sweeping with its Calm Mind set. Grass-types such as Celebi and Ferrothorn have very good synergy with Tentacruel. Celebi also provides cleric support with Heal Bell. Wish users such as Chansey and Clefable are great teammates, as Tentacruel has no reliable recovery of its own. Gliscor has very good synergy with Tentacruel, as it can switch into Electric- and Ground-type attacks and Tentacruel can easily take Ice- and Water-type attacks aimed at Gliscor.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Ice Beam hits Dragon-types, Gliscor, and Landorus formes for huge damage, but it is weak otherwise. Toxic cripples the bulky Water-types that tend to switch into Tentacruel. An offensive set with Hydro Pump, Hidden Power Fire, and Ice Beam or Sludge Bomb with Black Sludge can do significant amounts of damage on Tentacruel's usual counters and make good use of Tentacruel's Speed tier. A set consisting of Mirror Coat with Assault Vest can lure Pokemon such as Thundurus and Raikou. However, it is pretty bad otherwise. Haze allows Tentacruel punish Pokemon that try to set up. Substitute can be used to keep momentum and stall out Pokemon that have been already burned or poisoned.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Electric-types**: Thundurus, Mega Manectric, and Raikou easily force Tentacruel out with their super effective STAB moves while gaining momentum with Volt Switch.

**Psychic-types**: Psychic-types such as Latias, Latios, Slowbro, and Mega Slowbro can easily take out Tentacruel with their Psychic-type STAB moves. Slowbro and Mega Slowbro should be wary of Toxic, though.

**Water-types**: Manaphy, Starmie, and Rotom-W fear nothing from Tentacruel aside from a Scald burn or the occasional Toxic and can either set up or threaten it with their secondary STAB attacks, respectively. And although Tentacruel takes little from Scald, it hates getting burned, as it has no reliable recovery.

**Setup Sweepers**: Pokemon such as Mega Charizard X, Substitute Mega Gyarados, and SubCM Keldeo can easily set up on Tentacruel and potentially sweep its team.

**Revenge Killers**: Faster Pokemon with super effective attacks, such as Excadrill, Landorus, and Mamoswine, can easily force out Tentacruel.

Hey I know this is a WIP, but I'm surprised that there is no Acid Spray on the set. It needs the first slash or its own slot, as it allows Tentacruel to beat cm mega sableye and clefable.

Edit: yeah sub / knock / haze are solid choices too, agreed.

Replace Sludge Bomb with Acid Spray. Acid Spray is pretty much required on Tentacruel since it enables you to beat Calm Minders like Clefable, Mega Sableye, and Mega Slowbro lacking Psyshock. Sludge Bomb is still an option for 2HKOing Mega Altaria, breaking Keldeo's Subs and dealing more to Azumarill so it can probably be slashed, but most of the time Acid Spray is better since being able to avoid being spinblocked by Sableye is one of Tentacruel's major selling points.

Also I would slash Knock Off with Toxic Spikes for utility and the ability to beat Gengar faster. Other options for the last slot are Haze (lets you chekc BD Azumarill), Substitute (for dodging Sableye's burns) and Toxic (cripples a few switchins like Rotom-W and Sub CM Keldeo) so feel free to mention these too.

I still think all mentions of Sludge Bomb should be replaced with Sludge Wave. It's slightly stronger, the lower chance to Poison is actually beneficial since you want to Scald burn targets a lot of the time, and it hits Chesnaught.

Looks good, I'd mention a few extra things though -

- Mention the ability to absorb Toxic Spikes in Overview
- Mention the ability to beat CM Clefable in particular in Overview
- "competition from pokemon with similar typing and roles, such as starmie and rotom-w" -> just mention competition from Starmie as a Rapid Spinner, Tentacruel and Rotom-W play different roles
- "pokemon that are weak to stealth rock such as Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame are also good teammates" -> I'd remove this, because even if you elaborate, these two alongside Tentacruel don't have great defensive synergy as they are all weak to Electric attacks as well as QuakeEdge coverage, and they all resist similar stuff
- Drop Sludge Bomb to OO
- Mention Protect in OO or Set Details, both for scouting stuff like Scarf Landorus-T as well as grabbing an extra turn of Black Sludge recovery, as well in tandem w/ Toxic so it can grab extra chip on Pokemon such as Rotom-W or Charizard-Y
- An offensive set w/ Hydro, HP Fire and Ice Beam/Sludge Bomb (but still Black Sludge) deserves a mention in OO as well, being able to push significant amounts of damage on Tentacruel's usual counters and making good use of Tentacruel's speed tier
- In Checks and Counters, Suicune is typically beaten 1v1 by Tentacruel through Acid Spray so remove Cune from the Water-type
- Also in the Water-types section, mention that even though it takes little damage from Scald itself, Tentacruel hates eating Scald burns

Also, QC decided on this spread: 248 HP / 216 Def / 28 SpD / 16 Spe Timid, which looks kinda gross but it allows Tentacruel to avoid the 2HKO from LO Gengar's Shadow Ball and Modest Zard-Y's Fire Blast/Solarbeam after Stealth Rock damage, factoring Black Sludge recovery. It also allows Tentacruel to outpace significant stuff such as neutral-natured Altaria, Diggersby, and Breloom, Gardevoir before the Mega, pretty much any defensive Landorus-T, and more. It's also significant if you're using Toxic, to outpace stuff like SubDD Gyarados.

Also a message from AM:
"preserve it if you absolutely need the hazards gone, as your opponent will try to pressure it in that case" In the context of this sentence you need to mention that it as a grounded hazard spinner it needs to be careful about getting burned and not being brought out to the point where hazard damage like spike layers overload it. That's one of the cons of tentacruel, at times being pressured by spikes and over dependency.

Just expand on your c&c's as well as other options i.e. Ice beam allows you to hit dragons//gliscor /lando-t but otherwise weak etc etc

Hey there, you should definitely slash Haze somewhere, because it is a cool move to stop Clefable or Nasty Pass Mew or different boosters, there are not much it can stop but some. n_n

Seconding Karxrida on the fact that you should put Sludge Wave which allows you to hit Chesnaught as well.

So as mentionned before you should consider to add Haze as OO, indeed it allows you to punish pokemon that think they can setup and then keep momentum, while Acid Spray will only be good against defensive pokemon.
Same for Substitute since it can help Tentacruel to keep momentum and abuse scald burn / toxic on pokemon such as Ferrothorn / Latias / Rotom-W / Manaphy etc ...

I don't agree with a ground type section as check, a check is supposed to come safely on the most common move which is scald in this case, so i would say "Revenge killer", this is more appropriate here.

3/3 after all that.

Random note, but I think you should mention that Sludge Wave lets you keep Serperiors from switching in on Scald/Spray/Spin and setting up in your face, as:

252 SpA Life Orb Serperior Leaf Storm vs. 248 HP / 28 SpD Tentacruel: 160-188 (44 - 51.7%)

you can take a hit as long as you are above half and meanwhile

0 SpA Tentacruel Sludge Wave vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Serperior: 180-212 (61.8 - 72.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Also if you have Liquid Ooze it can't Giga Drain you (lest it risk KOing itself to the Ooze damage and LO recoil).
