Porygon2 Offense by Omfuga

Introduction
Welcome to the second staff RMT! This UU team, created by Omfuga, was selected for the archive due to its success in UUPL III and showcase of an important Pokemon in the development of ORAS UU, Porygon2. Considering the massive number of offensive threats in UU, including Mega Aerodactyl, Mega Pidgeot, Mega Sharpedo, Hydreigon, Salamence, and Chandelure, as well as the overall development of UU into a more offensive metagame, Porygon2 finds a solid niche in being able to provide teams with an answer to many of these threats. Omfuga's team gave rise to an interesting playstyle, "Porygon2 Offense", which usually features the duck paired with a reliable check to Fighting-types alongside four heavy hitters or sweepers. This team puts huge pressure on opposing teams with a combination of VoltTurn offense and two excellent sweepers, and is still able to fall back on its defensive core when under threat.

In-Depth

Gligar @ Eviolite
Ability: Hyper Cutter
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 SpD
Impish Nature
- Defog
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Roost
Gligar's defensive typing and capabilities make it a prime choice for Omfuga's team for hazard control, especially considering its great defensive synergy with Porygon2. Porygon2 can sponge most special attacks aimed at Gligar, while in turn Gligar can switch into most Fighting-type attacks without much trouble. The combination of Defog and Stealth Rock may seem odd on Gligar, considering the fact that it could run U-turn to compliment Mega Beedrill and Rotom-C, but it works efficiently on Omfuga's team for team compression, and lets Gligar support the rest of the team very well. Earthquake serves as a reliable STAB attack to hit targets that Gligar commonly switches into, such as Lucario, Mega Beedrill, Entei, and Doublade. While Omfuga's choice of moveset may leave it unable to hit Pokemon immune to Ground-type moves, it usually shouldn't be staying in on them anyway.

Gligar's defensive capabilities complement that of Porygon2's very well. They can easily switch into most offensive threats, which gives Omfuga a degree of comfort against many common playstyles. It also plays a huge supporting role, seeing as how it can both set up and clear hazards if needed, making it a vital part of Omfuga's team.

Beedrill @ Beedrillite
Ability: Swarm
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Protect
- Poison Jab
- U-turn
- Drill Run
Powerful STAB and Adaptability boosted U-turns make Mega Beedrill an ideal momentum grabber for Omfuga's team. Its STAB combination allows Mega Beedrill to especially threaten Psychic- and Fairy-types. Though Mega Beedrill sports a blazing 145 base Speed, it is disappointingly slow before Mega evolving, forcing Mega Beedrill to run Protect in order to Mega evolve safely. U-turn takes chunks of health out of common switch-ins such as Mega Aggron, Forretress, and Crobat, while gaining momentum and allowing Omfuga to pivot into an appropriate teammate. Poison Jab is essential as Mega Beedrill's most powerful attack, and it destroys Fairy-types. Omfuga has opted to use Drill Run over Knock Off or Swords Dance in order to make sure that Mega Beedrill can threaten Steel-types such as Cobalion and Lucario. Additionally, Omfuga has chosen to run an Adamant nature instead of the usual Jolly nature. While the change allows opposing Mega Beedrill, Mega Sceptile, and Choice Scarf Chandelure to outspeed Mega Beedrill, the difference in power makes up for it as it allows Mega Beedrill to punch massive holes in the opponent's physical walls, making it easier for Cobalion or Feraligatr to achieve a sweep.

Mega Beedrill's ridiculous Speed and power are a huge threat to opposing offensive and balanced teams, and its access to Adapability U-turn prevents it from falling flat against defensive teams. In combination with its teammates' ability to handle most of Mega Beedrill's Steel-, Ground-, and Poison-type checks, Mega Beedrill is an excellent choice for Omfuga's team.

Rotom-C @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch
- Leaf Storm
- Thunderbolt
- Trick
With its excellent offensive typing, high Special Attack, and access to Volt Switch, Rotom-C makes a great Choice Specs user. Its main advantage over its fellow Electric-types is its access to Leaf Storm, which allows it to smash any Ground-types looking to absorb its Electric-type attacks. Leaf Storm packs a ridiculous amount of power with the boost, hitting Hydreigon for upwards of 50% damage, while Thunderbolt provides a solid alternative STAB move. Volt Switch allows Rotom-C to hit hard while having the ability to retain momentum for Omfuga's team. Lastly, Trick allows Rotom-C to cripple walls that it has trouble getting past, such as Florges, Umbreon, and Blissey, to make them easier to deal with.

Rotom-C forms a devastating VoltTurn combination with Mega Beedrill, creating an offensive core that never allows the opponent to settle. It also forces a lot of switches, giving Omfuga the opportunity to get his sweepers in safely, and is his main check to the various Water-type Pokemon in the tier such as Mega Swampert, Suicune, and Slowking. Overall, with its destructive power and useful resistances, Rotom-C is an integral cog of Omfuga's team both offensively and defensively.

Cobalion @ Leftovers
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Close Combat
- Swords Dance
- Iron Head
- Magnet Rise
The diverse Cobalion makes an appearance on Omfuga's team. With its decent offensive stats, high speed, and excellent defenses, it can attack and support with equal efficiency. Here Cobalion is seen in an offensive role, attempting to use Swords Dance along with its high Speed to achieve a sweep. It works extremely well alongside Feraligatr as the two can eliminate each other's counters, with Feraligatr setting up on the bulky Ground-types and Fire-types that trouble Cobalion while Cobalion can take on the Grass-types that check Feraligatr. The powerful VoltTurn core of Rotom-C and Mega Beedrill benefits Cobalion in two ways: it wears down the opponent's team to pave the way for a Cobalion sweep late-game, while also giving opportunities to switch Cobalion in safely thanks to the core's ability to force switches. Cobalion also provides the team with an extremely useful Dark-type resist, which is always important thanks to the prevalence of Knock Off. Additionally, Cobalion garners a free Attack boost from the move, so Omfuga can attempt to use the vulnerability of Gligar and Porygon2 to Knock Off to his advantage by switching in Cobalion on predicted Knock Offs. Cobalion's typing in general packs useful resistances to Dragon, Rock, and Normal, which none of Omfuga's other Pokemon have. This makes it an important part of Omfuga's defensive core, with its ability to check top threats such as Hydreigon, Lucario, Mega Beedrill, Krookodile, and Mega Aerodactyl. Cobalion is also Omfuga's main answer to offensive Ice-types such as Mega Abomasnow and Kyurem, which would wreak havoc on his team otherwise.

Close Combat and Iron Head are Cobalion's bread and butter, providing it with two high-powered, reliable STAB moves with decent coverage. Swords Dance boosts Cobalion's Attack to dangerous levels, giving it a great chance of achieving a sweep at any point during a match. Magnet Rise is a fantastic move that turns bulky Ground-types, which would usually stop Cobalion cold, into setup bait. As a result, any team that relies on Pokemon such as Gligar and Nidoqueen to counter Cobalion will find themselves very hard-pressed to prevent a sweep.

Porygon2 @ Eviolite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 248 HP / 108 Def / 152 SpD
Calm Nature
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Tri Attack
- Recover
- Thunder Wave
With its defenses boosted by Eviolite, this little duck becomes absurdly bulky and is capable of checking a plethora of threats in the UU tier. Surprisingly, it wasn't common at all until a few months ago. Its rapid rise in popularity can largely be attributed to the success of this team, which was one of the first to realise Porygon2's huge defensive potential. Porygon2 checks a number of top threats to Omfuga's team, such as Mega Aerocatyl, Hydreigon, Crobat, Mega Abomasnow, and opposing Feraligatr. Its typing also allows it to utilise Pokemon's abilities against them, turning it into an effective counter against threatening sweepers such as Dragon Dance Salamence, Krookodile, and Chandelure.

While Porygon2 is usually seen carrying one of Thunderbolt or Ice Beam alongside Tri Attack, Omfuga instead opts for Hidden Power Fire, which hits the Steel-types that resist Tri Attack super-effectively. It also destroys Forretress, which can otherwise use Porygon2 as setup bait. Tri Attack provides Porygon2 with a solid STAB attack, delivering respectable hits on offensive threats that don't resist it, such as Hydreigon, Feraligatr, and Salamence. It also has a nifty 20% chance to either burn, paralyze, or freeze the target. Recover gives Porygon2 a method of reliable recovery, allowing it to continuously switch into various threats throughout a match and check them reliably. Lastly, Thunder Wave is Porygon2's main tool for crippling threatening sweepers, enabling it to paralyze them, Recover off any damage taken, and whittle them down with its attacks. It also goes excellently with Porygon2's massive bulk, as it allows it to tank pretty much any attack from full health and paralyze the target, rendering it crippled and easy for the rest of Omfuga's team to take on. All in all, Porygon2 provides Omfuga with an incredible safety net to fall back on when his team comes up against UU's various powerhouses.

Feraligatr @ Life Orb
Ability: Sheer Force
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Aqua Jet
- Crunch
- Swords Dance
With the gift of Sheer Force, Feraligatr has emerged as one of UU's top offensive threats. Decent bulk, good offensive and defensive typing, monstrous power with Sheer Force and Life Orb, and several great boosting options make Feraligatr extremely difficult to defend against.

Waterfall and Crunch are Feraligatr's two main attacking moves, providing good neutral coverage and ridiculous power. Omfuga selected Swords Dance as his boosting move of choice, which makes Feraligatr a terror for defensive teams lacking Chesnaught or Whimsicott. Feraligatr's ability to muscle through walls with Swords Dance gives Mega Beedrill and Cobalion a much easier time at sweeping late-game. Instead of Substitute or Ice Punch, Omfuga chose to use Aqua Jet as Feraligatr's fourth move. Aqua Jet mitigates Feraligatr's underwhelming Speed to pick off frail and weakened foes such as Mienshao and Mega Beedrill. Additionally, Aqua Jet allows Feraligatr to more easily use an Adamant nature, since Pokemon that it could potentially outspeed with a Jolly nature, such as Mamoswine, Chandelure, and Heracross, are hit hard by +2 Aqua Jet. This set provides Omfuga's team with a reliable way to break down defensive cores while still maintaining consistency against offensive teams.

Threatlist
: Offensive Ice-types such as Mamoswine, Mega Abomasnow and Kyurem can be a real headache for Omfuga's team to deal with since Cobalion and Feraligatr, his only resists to Ice, struggle to deal with their coverage moves. Adamant Life Orb Mamoswine with Knock Off can put severe pressure on Omfuga's team; since the combination of Stealth Rock, Knock Off, and Earthquake threatens to KO Porygon2, Omfuga has no real switch ins. Mega Abomasnow packs Earthquake to hurt Cobalion while Feraligatr is destroyed by its Grass-type moves. Similarly, Kyurem can utilise Earth Power and Dragon Pulse. However, Cobalion can reliably revenge kill and even set up on them, and Feraligatr can beat Mamoswine if it is in range of Aqua Jet or if Feraligatr is still healthy enough to survive an Earthquake.

: Both of Omfuga's defensive Pokemon rely on their Eviolites, and Krookodile's powerful Knock Off often forces one of them to lose it since Cobalion cannot risk switching into a potential Earthquake. Taunt Krookodile can beat Gligar one-on-one and prevent it from clearing Stealth Rock for Mega Beedrill. Omfuga must play aggressively with Leaf Storm to prevent Krookodile from switching in safely, but Cobalion can revenge kill it in a pinch.

: Even though Gligar and Porygon2 can shrug off Entei's attacks relatively comfortably, they are still heavily crippled by burns and so do not switch into Sacred Fire as easily as they would like to. Feraligatr, Omfuga's only Fire resist, also loathes burns. It's unlikely to pull off a sweep against Omfuga's team as he does have various means of defeating it, but it can still be quite a nuisance.

: With no Flying resistance, Omfuga's team is heavily pressured by fast Flying-types and often relies on Porygon2's Thunder Wave to ease his matchup against them. However, Taunt variants of Crobat and Mega Aerodactyl prevent Thunder Wave as well as Recover and can put Omfuga in a bad position. In this case, Cobalion and Feraligatr must be relied on to overwhelm them. Additionally, a badly timed confusion from Mega Pidgeot could help break through Porygon2, forcing Omfuga to revenge kill with Mega Beedrill.

Spikes: Omfuga's team is mildly reliant on hazards being cleared from his side of the field, but Gligar matches up poorly against two common Spikes users, Froslass and Roserade. This forces Mega Beedrill, Porygon2, Cobalion, and Feraligatr to take additional damage, reducing their longevity and overall effectiveness.
