Arena
The ASB Tournament Arena
Field Type: Neutral
Complexity: Simple
Format: All

Restrictions: No Restrictions

Description: Surrounded by thousands of screaming Pokémon fans, the ASB Arena can be best described as a standard Pokémon battling arena. In the centre of the arena lies a dirt-based floor outlined to show two separate sides (with a white Poké Ball centre). Surrounding the dirt is a moat filled with water. The moat is about 4.5m wide & creates a perimeter around the dirt arena. The arena itself is 24m wide, 33m long. All moves, weathers, and abilities are legal for the match, since it is an outdoor arena with a large water source & packed dirt. Pokémon must stay in the arena (or the dimensions of the arena in the case of Flying-type Pokémon, who cannot leave the arena & cannot fly higher than 18m). This prevents Pokémon from injuring the crowd watching the tournament. There are no outside interruptions by fans, Pokémon, or other elements not associated with the current battle.

Another day, another tournament, another lot of rental Pokemon everyone gets to play with. At least this time we will get to see something different after LLAMA and SICK spat out a bunch of strong mons at us over and over. While we are at it DYAE will even mimic ASB proper in some regard since movepools and backpacks *cough*noonegetsanygooditems*cough* need to be built up over the time of the tournament. Here in the first round we have two veritable mainstays facing off, although arguably one of them is THE ASB mainstay. So let us take a look at the teams...

First of all we have Canis who is fresh off the astounding feat of managing to out choke Maxim. As was to be expected in this tournament most players gravitated towards a select number of those available and while Canis' larger squad may have out of the box picks like Vespiqueen the three he brings for our amusement are quitinsential to the norm in this tournament. Exploud is rather self explanitory while Throh hard to look past for that wonderful bulk. I won't necessarily say I understand peoples facinations with Weezing, especially with that largely useless Defence buff off Rare Candy but I am still to be proven wrong (also Arbok FTW).

dogfish on the other hand is no stranger to getting great use out of Pokemon of this calibre. Those who follow just about any Electric Gym match will have fond (or possibly not so fond) memories of watching Lanturn rip out Soak-Discharge-Discharge rounds or Emolga Acrobatics all over things and while both of these are available for use today it just wouldn't be any fun if you didn't use a rental tournament to try out something out of the ordinary for yourself. It basically doesn't get too much more out of the ordinary than Sudowoodo, Heatmor and Maractus. As a whole its a little weird but potentially wonderful, especially when you put Xatu into the equation. The totem bird might look at a strong advantage but even Weezing and Throh will be tough for it to fight through. Basically this is anyones game, and perhaps more importantly I get to watch two people simulatenously try to convince me that Weezing is any good. So without further adue let us decide the opening proceedings. Canis has called Heads and the coin is in the air.

I just hate when you're reffing a match and the doings which transpire are so strange they have you convinced you've made a mistake. The round starts off just fine with Dogfish playing a combination of substitution abuse and just simply abusing the fact that Xatu is faster with a damaging evasive STAB to avoid the bulk of damage from some strong neutral hits this strangely not Rare Candied Exploud is packing. He even managed to engineer it so that the one hit Xatu needed to take is a comparitavely weaker Hyper Voice (as opposed to the slightly absurd Boomburst) but surely something has gone amiss when Dogfish finishes the round off with a laughably weak 2 BAP Stored Power? Regardless of whether the move was intentional or a simple oversight on one of our parts Dogfish and Xatu will most definitely leave this round ahead on HP percentage and he didn't even need expend that much more energy than the opponent to do so.

Of course no mistake anywhere in this match is as big as Canis expecting my flavour to in any way be fair and unbiased. Jesus man have you never read a match I've refereed before?

Despite an incredibly mistakenly worded sub that was ripe for abuse.. this round basically goes off in one of the more straightforward ways possible. Thief may well prove to be a very useful move in this tournament and Weezing uses it early off the bat to grab herself a Silk Scarf in what is much more a limiting move for Exploud than a boon for herself. I guess there is the potential for Explosions however? Unfortunately for Dogfish some rather intense haxxing in the form of back to back critical hits mean Beat still did pretty much the same amount of damage she would have with her item. Meanwhile Weezing's damage is solid if unspectacular and not at all aided by a complete lack of Poison on the loud one. Canis maintains a slight lead but his best neutral beatstick is also well below 50%, so this becomes a rather pivotal point.

Throh is definitely a good choice on paper here but unfortunately without an item and hitting on Weezing's better defensive side just makes his attacks look a little pitiful. Of course its not helped when Weezing abuses Paine's massive HP total to end the round not only having dealt more direct damage but also healing more than it took from the Fighter. Of course this did come at a very hefty energy cost. And 70 HP is still a very reasonable amount for Throh. With Weezing now essentially becoming fodder its time to see if dogfish sacrifices it for turn advantage or tries to continue the momentum with Xatu.

To absolutely nobody's surprise a combination of bellow average mons and lackluster (or non-existant) items does not make for the most exciting battle. In fact its downright boring. Dogfish maintains a HP lead, thanks not in the least to the ability to heal while still dealing damage he has taken advantage of throughout the last two rounds. Canis looks set for a switch to basically his only positive match up in the round, but then that pesky Xatu is still sitting there too. At least the Burn was there.
