Dustox - Reassigned

Not open for further replies.

[OVERVIEW]
  • Frail due to its terrible defence stats and typing
  • Can do very little until a Quiver Dance boost
  • Even after that, it still lacks any real niché to sweep, being outclassed by the likes of Butterfree
  • Only viability is in its decent 60/70/90 defensive stats
  • Access to Iron Defense and Roost plus the Special Defense
  • Amazing Compound Eyes ability, but horrible movepool makes no use of it

[SET]
name: Quiver Dance + Iron Defense Sweeper
move 1: Quiver Dance
move 2: Iron Defense
move 3: Bug Buzz
move 4: Roost
item: Black Sludge
ability: Shield Dust
nature: Calm
evs: 252 HP / 188 SpD / 68 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

  • Quiver Dance is staple move, letting Dustox get a bit more out of its lackluster base stats
  • +1 SpAtk, SpDef and Spe can OHKO to 2HKO many Pokémon weak to Dustox’s STABs, including Kadabra, Leafeon, Torterra and Jynx.
  • Iron Defense allows Dustox to set up easily without being revengekilled, providing a much-needed bulk.
  • Bug Buzz is the main STAB, hitting Psychic and Dark types hard.
  • Roost for standard reliable recovery after setting up 2 Quiver Dances and an Iron Defense, giving Dustox an easier time to sweep.

Set Details
========

  • Full HP EV investment to get the best survivability for Dustox
  • 188 Special Defense EV investment lets Dustox wall Special Attackers without much worry, provided Dustox manages to pull off 2 Quiver Dances
  • 68 Speed EV investment allows Dustox to outspeed Pokemon such as Zebstrika, Floatzel, and QF Ursaring at +2 Speed

Usage Tips
========

  • Get up Quiver Dance twice and then Iron Defense, or alternate the boosts between turns should the opponent bring in a physical attacker
  • Roost any damage sustained in the following turn
  • The +2 SpAtk boost should suffice Bug Buzz 2HKOing anything that lacks SpDef investment or resisted typing.
  • Dustox is not expected to wall too effectively without all its boosts up, so staying in for a free switch next turn may be more worth it than saving Dustox.
  • A Dustox that has at least 2 Quiver Dances up is generally safe from non-scarf Psychics and Dark types, Bug Buzz OHKOing most of such special sweepers.
Team Options
========

  • If Dustox can outspeed/survive attacks by Psychic types like Jynx or Kadabra, teammates like Poliwrath or Machoke checked by them will have an easier time switching in
  • On the other hand, the Psychic types aforementioned also appreciate a check/wall for Mightyena or Pawniard.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options
=============

  • Though an alternative is an offensive set with more coverage such as Giga Drain for Carracosta or Shadow Ball for Misdreavus, Dustox is usually outclassed in that department because of its frailty, and is outclassed by most special sweepers.
  • Assault Vest is also not viable due to getting rid of Quiver Dance, Iron Defense and Roost, Dustox’s staples.

Checks and Counters
===================

  • **Fire types**: Flareon, Heatmor, Rapidash and other Fire types generally have no issue with OHKOing even a +2 Defense and Special Defense Dustox.
  • **Psychic types**: Especially their Scarf variations, Psychic types could easily 2HKO Dustox if both Special Defense boosts are not fully up.
  • **Flying types**: Dustox is generally checked by Flying types like Articuno and Chatot.
  • **Rock types**: Even with the Quiver Dance and Iron Defense boosts, Dustox cannot effectively wear down the likes of Barbaracle, Carracosta and Probopass.

[OVERVIEW]

Dustox is the Volcarona of the PU meta, and by Volcarona I mean Mothim. Teams looking for a viable, non-outclassed contributor to their serious team should not consider this Pokémon. Nevertheless, Dustox is still worthy of this tiering, due to one move that lets it put in work, which is Quiver Dance. After a +1 boost in Special Attack, Special Defense and Speed, it unlocks its true potential, and it is able to OHKO or 2HKO a significant number of Pokémon. Yet it is still rather lackluster due to its frailty. It also comes with a fantastic ability, Compound Eyes, yet has such a poor movepool that this is a redundancy, leaving it with only Shield Dust.

[SET]

name: Moth of God

move 1: Quiver Dance

move 2: Sludge Bomb

move 3: Bug Buzz

move 4: Shadow Ball / Giga Drain

item: Black Sludge

ability: Shield Dust

nature: Modest

evs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Quiver Dance is a staple, as a +1 boost in Special Attack, Special Defence and Speed lets it OHKO Pokémon weak to it’s moveset like Jynx, Kadabra, Leafeon, as well as 2HKO sweepers like Tauros, Caracosta, Choice Band Torterra and Victreebel. Sludge Bomb is a nice STAB for Fairy and Grass types, and after a Quiver Dance, can 2HKO Togetic and Meganium. Bug Buzz handles Psychic types like Mr. Mime and Kadabra well, while Shadow Ball is for the unsuspecting Ghost types in the tier, such as Misdreavus and the Dusclops family. Giga Drain is also useful for dealing with Carracosta and Simipour.

Set Details

========

Full Special Attack EV investment plus Modest nature is to ensure Dustox wipes out threats in 2 hits, while the maximum Speed EV investment is get Quiver Dance’s Special Defence up faster than slower Special Attackers, so you can pray for this bug to not get windshielded as fast by anything remotely viable.

Usage Tips

========

When Dustox is on the field, setting up Quiver Dance should be your first priority. Hell, if your opponent gets greedy and lets you get away with setting up, going for a second round of boosts isn’t a bad idea. After all, at +2 SpA, SpDef and Speed, you pretty much wreck almost anything (that doesn’t resist and isn’t bulky) in one hit with Bug Buzz and Sludge Bomb.

Team Options

========

The one good thing about Dustox’s frailty is that it doesn’t need any teammate with good synergy, giving you an extra slot for anything you want. On the other hand, you’re kind of already wasting a slot with this Pokémon. Pokémon that appreciate Jynx and Kadabra of the field like Sawk and Haunter can still like nothing to do with Dustox, because it probably dies faster to Psychic-type moves than its teammates do anyway.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]

Other Options

=============

The set above is usually considered Dustox’s only viable one. A Specially Defensive set might look decent on paper, but the only way Dustox can wall a Psychic or Fire Blast effectively is with an Assault Vest, but that option gets rid of the much needed SpDef Boost from Quiver Dance. Silver Wind is a novelty for the possibility of grabbing the all stats +1 boost.

Checks and Counters

===================

**Physical and Special Attackers**: Anything that can live 2 +1 Special Attack boosted Bug Buzzes and Sludge Bombs can naturally kill Dustox without much problem.
um... you need to put it in a skeleton form ... by this I mean bullet points

after 2 qc checks you can write it up

Hi, before going through the analysis completely, the QC team decided that the analysis' set should be this one:
Dustox @ Black Sludge
Ability: Shield Dust
EVs: 252 HP / 188 SpD / 68 Spe
Calm Nature
- Iron Defense
- Quiver Dance
- Bug Buzz
- Roost

The current set is outclassed by the likes of Butterfree and probably every special setup sweeper, and hardly finds space to set up, even if it does it is prone to being easily revengekilled, while this one allows it to become harder to revengekill because of access to Iron Defense, which is the slight niche this has, and finds more set up opportunities on special attackers and slower physical attackers. If wondering EVs in Speed allow Dustox to outspeed Pokemon such as Zebstrika, Floatzel, and QF Ursaring at +2 Speed.

Got it. So do I implement this into my thread?

You have to replace the current set with the one I posted and edit the analysis accordingly.

This analysis is quite lacking. The overview doesn't provide any insight beyond what's already on the surface. You should work on that to make it show Dustox's niche in the PU metagame, ie. a bulky setup sweeper, however one that needs a lot of support to work.

You mention Jynx several times in this analysis but Jynx isn't even in PU.

Set Details should talk about Shield Dust and its poison typing making it practically immune to most forms of crippling status

Team Options needs a lot of work

Other Options: don't even mention Assault Vest please. You could maybe add some moves over Iron Defense or mention items like Kee Berry.

I suggest you play the tier and use the mon before you implement these changes, because I feel as if you don't have much experience in this tier at all.
