Smeargle [GP: 2/2]

GP 2/2

[OVERVIEW]

Smeargle has access to virtually every move, which makes it the only viable Smash Pass Pokemon in Ubers due to its access to both Spore and Shell Smash. It is important to note that Mega Diancie, which looks like a full stop to succesfully passing due to its immunity to Spore and ability to OHKO most recipients, falls to a +2 Iron Head. Smeargle's poor bulk makes it especially susceptible to priority attacks. It also struggles versus common Pokemon such as Darkrai, Mega Sableye, Substitute Perish Song Mega Gengar, and Pokemon with Lum Berry, especially Lum Berry Tyranitar. Finally, using Smeargle requires experience and usually involves a risky game of predictions, and it can only be used once each game.

Moves
========

Shell Smash is used for the boosts, and Baton Pass is used to pass the boosts to the recipient. Spore induces sleep, which makes it easier to boost and use Baton Pass. Iron Head is used to OHKO Mega Diancie, a big threat to Smeargle and intended Shell Smash recipients.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed investment with a Jolly nature is essential to outspeed many Pokemon in the tier and put them to sleep, such as Primal Groudon, Primal Kyogre, Giratina-O, and some Xerneas and Dialga sets. Maximum Attack EVs are needed to OHKO Mega Diancie after the Shell Smash boosts. Focus Sash ideally gives Smeargle two turns to set up Shell Smash and use Baton Pass. Finally, Own Tempo is nice to avoid confusion.

Usage Tips
========

Never lead with Smeargle unless you are 100% sure you can pull a fast win, which in most cases isn't possible. One should use Shell Smash, then use Spore, and finally use Baton Pass. It's important to pay attention when using Spore if there are Magic Bounce users on the opponent's team. Even if it's tempting to Shell Smash in a one-on-one scenario against an unsuspecting Diancie and OHKO it with Iron Head on the following turn, it is highly recommended not to do this unless you are absolutely sure there are no Pokemon with priority moves on the opposing team.

It is important to keep Stealth Rock off the field and play according to your opponent's Stealth Rock user. It's also strongly advised to come in safely after one of your Pokemon has been KOed because Smeargle needs to have all of its HP to do its job. Finally, choose the best recipient according to the opponent's team; you will only be able to pass a boost once. If the opponent has an Arceus, it's preferable to scout to see what their Arceus forme is before setting up. For example, if you pass to Diancie only to find the opponent is using Water Arceus or Ground Arceus, that would be a waste.

Team Options
========

Pair Smeargle with a Pokemon that removes entry hazards, especially Stealth Rock. Primal Groudon is a mandatory recipient because it has monstrous offenses, great typing, and good bulk. Using Diancie is also mandatory. It has great mixed offensive stats and moves and it handles status, can reflect phazing moves with Magic Bounce, and resists Extreme Speed priority. Giratina-O is a highly recommended Pokemon too because it can check the most popular physically offensive Pokemons and can clear entry hazards with Defog. Otherwise, Ghost Arceus is a great answer to Ditto and can use Defog too. Finally, it's very important to have a Darkrai check on the team because it's a very common threat to Smeargle.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=========

A Sticky Web set with Nuzzle, Spore, Rapid Spin, and Sticky Web can be used. However, it is difficult to use Sticky Web teams in this metagame because Latias is very common, quick, and immune to Sticky Web and can remove them with Defog. Entry hazard setting is an option too, but other Pokemon are better at that. Substitute can be used on the Smash Pass set to benefit a frail recipient such as Mega Diancie. Dark Void can be used instead of Spore in order to put Grass-types to sleep, but the drop in accuracy is not worth it, and Grass-types are uncommon in this tier. Geomancy can be used instead of Shell Smash to avoid bulk drops, but then Smeargle has to run Power Herb instead of Focus Sash, which makes it even more difficult to use Baton Pass.

Checks and Counters
==============

**Residual Damage**: Entry hazards and sand can break Smeargle's Focus Sash and make it difficult to boost and pass effectively.

**Walls**: On defensive teams, Pokemon such as Water Arceus and Lugia can wall and phaze recipients without Magic Bounce if entry hazards are kept off the field.

**Darkrai**: Darkrai is faster and can put Smeargle to sleep with Dark Void, allowing it to either set up or KO Smeargle.

**Mega Kangaskhan**: Mega Kangaskhan can easily OHKO Smeargle because its Parental Bond ability allows it to hit twice, hence breaking Smeargle's Focus Sash.

**Lum Berry Arceus**: Lum Berry Arceus can absorb Spore and KO Smeargle with priority.

**Klefki**: Klefki can paralyze Smeargle with Thunder Wave, giving it a 43.75% of stopping Smeargle from using Baton Pass. Klefki can then proceed to 2HKO Smeargle.

**Mega Sableye**: Mega Sableye can bounce back Spore and deal massive damage with Foul Play.

**Shaymin-S**: Shaymin-S is faster, is unaffected by Spore, and can flinch and KO Smeargle.

**Ho-oh**: Ho-Oh can absorb Spore with Sleep Talk and can deal a lot of damage to the Shell Smash receiver.

**Lum Berry Tyranitar**: Lum Berry Tyranitar can take a Spore and knock Smeargle down to its Focus Sash afterwards. Sand damage then KOes Smeargle at the end of the turn.

no to sticky web
M8 I really gave many viable advantages and it's obvious that it can get up Sticky Web vs many common teams and archetype like Classic HO, Greninja Sticky web HO and Latias or and Waterceus Balance/BO or even Dialga BO not to say that it's neither taunt bait nor set up bait.
Not only to Dice please can we leave our stubbornness and previously made opinions about pokemons and sets somewhere else and read everything I just said carefully. n_n

Webs:
Try to have something for Shaymin like Ekiller and something for mega Kangaskhan like Darkrai.
This phrase looks strange to me as none of these a solidly checked by Darkrai. You may have meant "Kangaskhan *or* Darkrai" in this case. You can also mention mons that do these things since this analysis is for newer players after all.

Definitely mention ways to beat the bouncers in Team Options, especially Mega Sableye. Diancie is really good at this because it also checks Darkrai.

Smeargle also greatly annoys Sableye since it gives some Pokemon a chance to get passed it because of Nuzzle para. This could be in Usage Tips somewhere. (This would be Dialga and stuff that doesn't like Will-O because Will-O has issues hitting through para; these mentions are up to you)

Smash Pass:

Mega Diancie is pretty much manditory I feel. otherwise you end up using Xatu who isn't the worst on Smash Pass I guess. Kebabe will probably throttle me for that quote.

Mention a couple of mons that work well with smeargle that actually check Darkrai, Skymin (immune to spore and flinches which sucks), and Kanga instead of just saying you need checks to them lol.

C&C:
Mention Skymin is also immune to Spore.

Definitely good though.

I don't know much about ubers but shouldn't skill swap get a mention in oo to get past msab or something if webs ends up being a set?

I don't really see the point of Skill Swap since webs isn't doing much against a stall team anyways. It also might not be a bad idea to put the smashpass set first as it seems to have less controversy; it seems that set is more consistent against a variety of playstyles in comparison to webs.

I agree with hack and dice; after testing it myself, Sticky Web isn't worth it in this metagame. Sorry :( (means less writing though!)

QC 2/3 for the smash pass set, in usage tips where you talk about passing to the right pokemon in accordance with the opposing team, mention trying to scout to see what their arceus form is before setting up. If you pass to diancie only to find the opponent is using water arceus or ground arceus, that would not be great.

Just saying for the sake of clarity smeargle does not learn every move in the game, like hard coded moves such as hyperspace fury.

I think he can't learn it since it came in mid gen maybe but not like it has any competitive use with smeargle anyway at all.

Okay you asked me to post on this and I only noticed a few little things.

In the overview just for the sake of menial accuracy I would change "learns every move there is" to something like "has access to every move except for Chatter". You can also merge the pros and cons into a single paragraph.

In moves since Ingrain is first slashed it should be mentioned before Taunt in the paragraph. In usage tips you might want to briefly talk about how to play Smeargle in a situation where you don't want to lead with it, how to get it in safely, etc.

In team options this is the place to elaborate on good receivers from Baton Pass which you don't really do other than the obvious P Don mention and Arc Ghost. You might also want to consider removing the "if you are laddering" portion of that sentence.

Although Mega Khan might not be the most relevant threat ever the simple fact that it destroys the set should mean that it's listed much higher on C&C. You can also get rid of the sub headers on C&C and merge them into one list, obviously keeping the less dangerous and less relevant threats near the bottom.

Diancie is too threatening otherwise, it OHKOs any viable recipient and often doesn't even need to predict between multiple recipients (pdon and diancie, the best recipients, both die to earth power). Taunt or ingrain would be highly situational according to me. Again your own mega diancie is virtually immune to phazing and should be passed to vs teams with defensive phazers like lugia. Phazers like pdon and such are far more offensive and it would really often just be better to just pass than letting them sleep off turns.

Magic coat would probably be the best alternative to iron head.

set details

Change accordingly to new evs.
+2 252 Atk Smeargle Iron Head vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Diancie: 248-296 (102.9 - 122.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

usage

Never lead unless you are 100 % sure you can pull the fast win, which in most cases isn't possible. Instead lead according to game plan which you formulated during preview. Is there an Arceus forme you are unsure of? Try to force it in with other mons. Taunt leads? Diancie is probably your best option. Something needs to be weaker before passing? Make sure to play so you can weaken that thing those relevant percents.

Always have a mindset of keeping SR off the fied and play according to your opponents assumed SR user.

Passing is easiest to do vs mons that lack status moves but as long as the mon you are passing against doesn't have priority/phazing/faster taunt you should be quite ok. -2 Latios and Latias are prime examples as it means your recipient is fine even if they wake up. Other mons to consider passing vs are Kyogre, support Arceus formes (especially ghost), Blissey. Even if it's tempting to smash in a 1v1 vs an unsuspecting Diancie and OHKO it with iron head on the following turn, it is highly recommended not to unless you are absolutely sure there is no priority on the opposing team.

team

Pdon is mandatory, good call. Diancie is almost that, but I think you can run Mence on some smashpass teams so I wouldn't word it exactly like that. They are good because they combine power with priority resilience, have good synergy to form a sound foundation for teambuilding instead of just yolooffensing. They are also immune to twave, which is very important. So mention that kinda stuff.

After that you got defogers, Giratina-O is I think the best "catch all" physical one-time check for these teams. Latis and certain Arceus-formes are also good choices. Spinners like Excadrill or Cloyster can potentially work and should be mentioned.

Rayquaza, especially water move variants can be effective anti leads and give you ways to pressure the most common SR user.

Mewtwo-Y would mean no Diance so remove.

Ghostceus isn't preferable, it is however a fine choice for the reasons you listed. Can also defog.

counters

Mention that it isn't so much about countering smeargle, it's about preventing the pass. A sucessful pass would probably mean game over. Therefore I feel it's unnecessary to mention the following checks: Ho-oh, Mega Sableye (Diancie just laughs), Pdon. Kanga, Darkrai and Shaymin-S are pretty OK to mention for obvious reasons. Do mention in specific, lum ekiller.

The best way to deal with defensively is by using mons like Waterceus+Lugia, keep SR off and playing carefully. CM Diancie as a recipient can wreck that combination in some situations, however.

Mence can annoy a Pdon pass with intimidate, but you will have to have something that handles Diancie on your team too.

But really the best way to beat smashpass is to break smeargles sash with entry hazards and then using pretty much any hit to OHKO it before it actually passes. The way to keep up hazards depends very much on the particular game and team, so there isn't a general way on how to play this.

At worst you can beat smashpass by waking up, which has a fair chance of happening, especially if smeargle is forced to spore before smashing (like vs a slower mon when it has gotten its sash broken by hazards or so).

Twaving a smeargle as it with a faster mon like Klefki gives you a 43.75 % chance of stopping a pass assuming you don't miss your attacking moves (flash cannon Klefki etc)

Do all this and qc 3/3

Never lead with Smeargle unless you are 100 % sure you can pull a fast win, which in most cases isn't possible. Instead lead according to game plan which you formulated during preview. Not all of us are that good at Pokemon ._. In more seriousness, this focuses more on the team instead of the Pokemon Shell Smash, Spore then Baton Pass is the typical move order used, but can be changed depending on match up is usually how it should work but be flexible and think about the situation and what's against you. It's important to be wary of using Spore if the opponent has Pokemon with Magic Bounce pay attention to Spore when Magic Bouncers are around. Passing on -2 Special Attack Latios and Latias are prime examples as it means your recipient is fine even if they wake up. Other Pokemon to consider passing versus are Kyogre, support Arceus formes (especially ghost), and Blissey. Good Pokemon to Smash Pass on include Latios and Latias at -2 SpA, Support Arceus formes, Kyogre, and Blissey due to the ease of using Spore on them and their inability to do major damage to the recipient. Even if it's tempting to Shell Smash in a one versus one versus an unsuspecting Diancie and OHKO it with Iron Head on the following turn, it is highly recommended not to unless you are absolutely sure there is no priority on the opposing team.

Always have a mindset of keeping SR off the field and play according to your opponents assumed SR user. It is vital to keep entry hazards off the field in order to keep Smeargle's Focus Sash intact. In addition, it is strongly advised to switch Smeargle in after a teammate has been KOed in order to keep it at full health for as long as possible It's also strongly advised to come in safely after a kill since you need Smeargle at 100% HP for it to do its job. Finally, choose the best recipient according to the opponent's team since you will be able to pass a boost only once. It is beneficial to scout the opponent's Arceus forme before attempting to Smash Pass. For example, passing the boosts to Diancie and being unable to KO an opposing Water or Ground Arceus is a waste. In fact, it's preferable to scout to see what their Arceus form is before setting up. For example, if you pass to Diancie only to find the opponent is using Water Arceus or Ground Arceus, that would be a waste.

Team Options
========

Pair it with a Pokemon that removes entry hazards, preferably a Pokemon that can deal with common users of Stealth Rock such as Deoxys-S and Primal GRoudon especially Stealth Rock induced by Deoxys-S and Primal Groudon. Primal Groudon is a mandatory team mate recipient because it has monstrous offenses, great typing, and good bulk which allow it to take advantage of the Shell Smash boosts. Using Diancie is also mandatory. It has due to its great mixed offensive stats and moves, ability to handle status and phazing with Magic Bounce and resistance to Extreme Speed it handles status, phazing with Magic Bounce, and Extreme Speed priority with its typing. Giratina-O is a highly recommended Pokemon too team mate as well since it can check the most popular physically offensive Pokemon and can remove hazards with Defog while being able to Defog at the same time. Otherwise, Ghost Arceus is a great answer to Ditto and also has access to Defog can Defog too. Finally it's very important to have a Darkrai check on the team. Mandatory means the team mate is absolutely necessary for the Pokemon's functioning; are Primal Groudon and Mega-Diancie absolutely necessary? It seems a little teambuilding restrictive if so. I also don't exactly see how Ghost Arceus is a great answer to Ditto who have copied Smash Pass recipients.

A Sticky Web set with Nuzzle, Spore, Rapid Spin and Sticky Web can be used, though Sticky Web is not very viable in the current metagame. However, this metagame is difficult for Sticky Web teams. A suicide lead set with Entry Hazards is an option, but is typically outclassed Entry hazard setting is an option too, but other Pokemon are better at that. Substitute can be used on the Smash Pass set for a frail recipient like Mega Diancie. Dark Void can be used instead of over Spore for to circumvent Grass types, but the drop in accuracy is not worth it since as Grass types are uncommon in this tier. Geomancy can be used instead of Shell Smash to avoid the drop in Defense and Special Defense bulk drops but then you have to Smeargle must run Power Herb instead of Focus Sash which makes it even more difficult to Baton Pass.

Checks and Counters
==============

Countering Smeargle is mainly by preventing the Baton Pass or checking mot possible recipients:
  • On defensive teams the combination of Water Arceus and Lugia can deal with Smash Pass as long as Rocks are off the field.
  • Breaking Smeargle's Sash with hazards or sand which makes it way for difficult for it to pass.
**Residual Damage**: Entry hazards and sand can break Smeargle's Focus Sash and make it difficult to boost and pass effectively

**Walls**: On defensive teams, Pokemon such as Water Arceus and Lugia can wall and phaze recipients without Magic Bounce if entry hazards are kept off the field

**Darkrai**: Faster, induces sleep with Dark Void and kills it or set up. Darkrai is faster and can induce sleep with Dark Void before Smeargle can Shell Smash or Spore. From there, Darkrai can either KO Smeargle or set up.

**Mega Kangaskhan**: One shots it. Due to Parental Bond and a higher speed, Mega Kangaskhan can OHKO Smeargle through its sash with its attacks.

**Lum Berry Arceus**: Absorbs the Spore and kills with priority. Arcues can absorb one Spore due to Lum Berry and KO Smeargle with Extremespeed.

**Klefki**: Uses Thunder-Wave wave versus Smeargle and has a 43.75 % chance of stopping a pass since it 2HKO it. Klefki can paralyze Smeargle with Thunder Wave and potentially KO it before it uses Baton Pass due to full paralysis.

**Mega Sableye**: Bounce back Spore and deals massive damage with Foul Play to the recipient. Mega Sableye is immune to Spore due to Magic Bounce and can deal massive amounts of damage to a recipient with Foul Play

**Shaymin-Sky**: is faster, resistant to Spore and can flinch then kill it which stops it from doing anything. Shaymin-Sky's Speed and immunity to Spore enable it to counter Smeargle by attacking and flinching it with Air Slash before it can do anything.

**Ho-oh**: With Sleep Talk. Deals massive damage to the receiver. Ho-oh can absorb Spore well due to Sleep Talk and can proceed to deal damage to the Smash Pass recipient with its powerful STAB attacks.

**Lum Berry Tyranitar**: With a hit and sand damage. Lum Berry Tyranitar can absorb one Spore and can KO Smeargle easily due to Sand Steram breaking the Focus Sash.

Reworded some things. Hope it works for you.
