Description: Surrounded by thousands of screaming Pokémon fans, the ASB Arena can be best described as a standard Pokémon battling arena. In the centre of the arena lies a dirt-based floor outlined to show two separate sides (with a white Poké Ball centre). Surrounding the dirt is a moat filled with water. The moat is about 4.5m wide & creates a perimeter around the dirt arena. The arena itself is 24m wide, 33m long. All moves, weathers, and abilities are legal for the match, since it is an outdoor arena with a large water source & packed dirt. Pokémon must stay in the arena (or the dimensions of the arena in the case of Flying-type Pokémon, who cannot leave the arena & cannot fly higher than 18m). This prevents Pokémon from injuring the crowd watching the tournament. There are no outside interruptions by fans, Pokémon, or other elements not associated with the current battle.

Short summary to get this one moving. Matezoide looks to match up pretty well across the board, no one has a glaring weakness while several have positive match ups available. He even has the added benefit of items this time around. As far as Dogfish goes, well lets just say I fear for Sudowoodo...

Alch proves to be a very effective first send out and a decent scout at that. Through some substitution abuse he protects himself from any of Nemo's STAB offence and the Lanturn is relegated to useful but not devastating Ice coverage. This does allow him to gain the speed advantage with a little Icy Wind but it basically means nothing when the Xatu is just going to Teleport out anyway. Unfortunately for Dogfish however the cruelest of possible fates befouls him on the final action as Alch is frozen solid by repeated Ice Beams. However lady luck shows just how harsh a mistress she can be as the tides then immediately turn and the freeze is the least severe possible, in fact not hampering Xatu at all (thanks not in the least to some prior whinging by yours truely). The round ends with Dogfish spending a metric fuckton of energy to even the standings, which I suppose is a fair trade given incoming Maractus.

Apparently Rock Head Wood Hammer Sudowoodo is actually the go-to guy in this situation. Or more aptly as Dogfish put it, just the lease worst time to get Sudo out of the way. But fortunately it all goes pretty well for the faux tree. He avoids burns entirely and manages to win the damage race outright on every action thanks largely to a helpful crit on Sand Tomb. Matezoide was able to to play a little substitution abuse to at least limit the damage somewhat, but one might question how smart that play was when Sand Tomb leaves a very weak Lanturn trapped in with its nemesis and having to order first. Also Rock Incense too strongth.

Matezoide makes some rather strange decisions here in spending a rather decent amount of energy simply stalling Sudowoodo out. You know, instead of just outright killing the thing and moving on. Sure turn order is important but those Spikes don't even quite counteract the Stealth Rocks thanks to Xatu's immunity and Sudowoodo might have some trick to play ordering second. Even if not Dogfish was prepared to lose it already so he doesn't lose anything either way.

Well I guess it worked out okay for Mate after all. Joe is able to get the clean KO and avoid shenanigans from Sudowoodo, and even make some use of that questionable Berry in the process. the Diggersby now sits safely behind a substitute and ordering second against Dogfish's next Pokemon with the ledger pretty much all squared up.

Well the round proceeds pretty much as expected and things remain at more or less a stalemate. Hazel of course hits away with Super Effective STAB but Joe basically does equally as well with some nifty attacks, and even ensures Venusaur gets to come in and Sludge Bomb away next round. Of course this does mean Dogfish will definitely win the entry hazard battle, and that may prove telling.
