alright let's talk page structure, princessofmusic Rhythms Snobalt has volunteered as HTML peeps and thus I'd love the input you may have to share on this subject regarding what's possible and/or feasible. Any other coder is naturally free to weigh in with their suggestions, the more the merrier

First of all, the page listing all badged artists is currently wasting its space, as it's purely a horizontal list from top to bottom. What I'd like to see is multiple lists, sort of like the category pages on wikipedias without the letter divisions, and if we could get rid of the dots as well then that'd be even better imo. I also considered dividing artists into what they're most renowned for, such as digital art, vectors, traditional, and spriting, or maybe even what year(s) they were badged, just so we could create some manner of spacing so that we don't end up with a symmetrical block of links. But basically, any solution where we don't have a single column of links is better for browsing purposes, so if anyone can propose a solution or whip up some code on the spot would be terrific.

Secondly, there's the art archive at the bottom of each artist profile where we link to their art that's already on-site or any other media outlet, such as art for The Smog, The Player, The Competitor, Smogon articles, facebook, CAP designs, Monthly-Art-Contest winners, I could go on. For the most part, it could be set up similarly to the Artist Profile list, where there's a subcategory for each area / outlet, and then have about two columns to the link the various articles and whatnot. If we want to divide each category up further (like for Smog contributions, we could divide them up in issues), we could set up / borrow what they did for the ORAS TMs page, where each gray line represents one issue and with the articles then listed below. For most artists, this won't be an issue since we don't have that many people who have contributed a huge amount, but for people like fatecrashers, cartoons! and myself, a system like that could make things more organised.

Lastly, 13ulbasaur just got her artist badge, so she gets a piece of this cake too. See the first post of this thread and this post if you feel like writing something up for your profile! :)

I think the way of what they're renowned for would work best, it would definitely balance out the lists (unless there's some large amount of hidden artists rof). It would also allow people to easily find artists who excel in a certain type of art easier.

I think that same design or something similar would work particularly well (anto fren if u do this ima help u).

To be entirely honest, at this point in time it doesn't really matter how we categorise our artists, as long as we have the option to. So if someone makes what I described above with the categories 1, 2, and 3, that'd still be great, we can decide what those categories can be later. Artist style / work method is certainly a tempting option for the reason you said (looking up artists similar to your own style), but since plenty of artists can deploy several of those styles, it can still be tricky to decide which category to put them in. But yeah.

Yeah I think that sounds good. Once we decide how the categories are gonna be divided, a definition list (as opposed to the current unordered list) might be a good way to get rid of the dots.

<h3>Who is aXl?</h3>
<p>Hi, my name is aXl and I've been on Smogon since 2009. I first became interested in art around that same time through browsing the forums and stumbling upon an old spriting thread in Smeargle's Studio. Since then, I've been working to improve my craft and branch out into other forms of media.</p>

<p>When I'm not making art, I am likely working hard trying to get my Architecture assignments completed for college. I currently use the usernames "Falgaia" and "semiAquamatic" outside of Smogon.</p>

<p>My favorite Pokemon is Mega Banette, with Gallade following close behind.</p>

<h3>Achievements</h3>
<p>I have created over 40 custom-made Pok&eacute;mon sprites for the Pok&eacute;mon XY Sprite Project, as well as over 50 quality checks on other sprites in the project (including some of my own). I placed third overall in the Smogon Front Page art contest and first overall in the CAP 20 Sprite Poll. I have also contributed several pieces to the Pok&eacute;mon of the Week series from Smogon's Facebook.</p>

Don't adjust the width and height in the <img> tags

use a program such as photoshop or a website such as imgur to adgust the size.

it makes it harder for the webpage to load

<h2>Who is Tikitik?</h2>

<p>Hey there. I guess you can say that I'm an example of someone that enjoys drawing Pok&eacute;mon but not competitively playing. After getting used to Smogon and feeling comfortable with its community, I gathered up enough courage to start my very own art thread. Later on, I found myself contributing some of my artwork to The Smog and The Player and writing some articles as well. A bunch of artwork later, I started to frequently post in Smeargle's Studio. All in all, at that point I enjoyed my time on Smogon and sharing opinions on my and other people's art as well. Except for the Studio, you generally won't see me anywhere else around the forums considering that I don't have as much interest in the other sections.</p>

<p>Regarding my work, I'm one of the few individuals that does his stuff while only using a mouse. I'm mostly comfortable with using my knowledge of SAI for getting the best out of my art. Aside from that, I love doing traditional art, which, sadly, I am not able to share due to not having a decent camera or a printer.</p>

<p>I treat drawing as a little hobby of mine, although it was my childhood dream to try to do it professionally. What I actually study is pharmacy, and let's just say that it certainly keeps me busy. Nevertheless, you can still find me in a bunch of rooms on PS!</p>

<h2>Achievements</h2>

Who is brightobject?

Art student, high schooler. Amateur artist but I really wanna go professional. I don't know too much about competitive Pokemon, but I still love this site. :) I draw a lot of inspiration from shounen and spectacle fighters and stuff, and enjoy character design. That is to say, I hate drawing backgrounds.

Smogon Biography
  • Used to go by hiddenpowerice
  • Started as a tryhard poster in Firebot (and I still am!).
  • Been an official contributor since some arbitrary date I can't remember. I did some of my first artwork here for MAC, though.
  • Did some work here and there for the Smog and the Player, and drew cover art for each before the Big Merger. Did an Arterview, and I still do work for the Articles Workshop.
  • Started an art thread a while back. It's still running.
  • Entered some MACs along the way taking 1st in Monthly Art Contest #30: Pokemon Makeover.
  • I manage the unofficial Smeargle News Twitter with Arhops
  • Just started managing the newly revived MAC with Tikitik
  • Oh yeah, I'm an Approved Artist and a proud holder of the Artist Badge as well.

Art preferences
I love dry mediums (and in a broader sense prefer traditional over digital)--everything from pencils, pens, ink, pastels, and colored pencils to chalks, artists' crayons, and collage--all of that is right up my alley!

The main drawing program I use is Photoshop. Of course, when I'm doing trad work I don't; for that stuff I prefer dry mediums (as I mentioned earlier).

My tablet is a Cintiq Companion. It's a cranky little bugger and we usually don't get along--but it's a tough old bird and I love it nonetheless.

<h2>Who is Magistrum?</h2>

<p>I'm an Architect-to-be (as of this time) that still can't and probably won't let go of this stupid Pok&eacute;mon franchise. I stumbled upon Smogon back when Pok&eacute;mon X&amp;Y were first announced. That was when I saw the Create-a-Pok&eacute;mon section and decided to create an account and contribute a design. Since then, I've been on and off from Smogon due to unfortunate circumstances and unfortunate procrastinations in real life. I can also be seen in Pok&eacute;mon Showdown!'s Art Room, showing off my boring fakemons.</p>

<p>At present, I am working at an Architecture Firm that is too lax for its own good because there aren't that many construction projects during the Summer. My free time includes deluding myself into thinking I can finish my fakedex project and wondering why I haven't drawn a doujinshi of my original character, Magistelle, yet.</p>

<h2>Art preferences</h2>

<p>For Traditional Art, I use 2B Mechanical Pencils for sketching, Disposable Tech Pens such as Unipin or Artline for Inking, and Markers for coloring things because apparently Watercolor doesn't love me, and Color Pencils frustrate me because they leave white spots and grain. I use Kurekolor Markers because Copic Markers aren't available in my country and I am too lazy to buy them online.</p>

<p>However, nowadays I mostly do Digital Art via Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended or Paint Tool SAI. I live in constant fear of being arrested because I didn't pay for these programs and thought it was better to pirate them using some shady torrent links.</p>

I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but the Studio hub is currently missing from the site hub directory here. We'll probably want to add it under the Community section either now or once we feel the hub is complete.

Also, I personally feel that the sidebar links should be organized alphabetically (Home, Artists, Gallery, MAC).

Anyway, here's a thing.

Feel free to edit my formatting because I'm always lazy to indent.

I did this on a whim, so don't hesitate to air your complaints if you feel you've been pigeonholed into a category in which you don't belong or can suggest better categories. I grouped all of the artist alumni together because some of them aren't as well-known and are difficult to categorize. Also, I GP'd the opening paragraph, so that should be included in the update as well.

If no one else is interested in updating the MAC page, I can try to do so tomorrow or next weekend.

EDIT: Another idea is for the Artists page is to organize it alphabetically but separate the names by what letter they start with... kind of like this page.

use a program such as photoshop or a website such as imgur to adgust the size.

it makes it harder for the webpage to load
The problem I don't like with this is that we'll be re-hosting images that are already hosted on-site. I've been told that there's no concerns with memory atm, but I prefer to make use of the files we already have on hand rather than re-uploading it for a minor readjustment. If we signficantly alter the size of an image for featuring it on artist profiles and whatnot, then it can be considered yeah, but it shouldn't be the first option we consider imo. But if there's more reasons that I'm unaware of that you HTMLers can make a stronger case for, then do indulge me.

I don't think this has been mentioned yet, but the Studio hub is currently missing from the site hub directory here. We'll probably want to add it under the Community section either now or once we feel the hub is complete.
When it's complete I'd say, although I guess the current hubs aren't exactly complete either :P

Also, I personally feel that the sidebar links should be organized alphabetically (Home, Artists, Gallery, MAC).
I'm not even sure if MAC even needs to be featured on the side and instead make a crossroad page for contests in general instead, but I suppose we have plenty of room for things along that bar. Heck, it could even be housed in the Gallery as a category of its own.

I grouped all of the artist alumni together because some of them aren't as well-known and are difficult to categorize. Also, I GP'd the opening paragraph, so that should be included in the update as well.
Initially I really liked this, but after thinking it over, this creates two problems imo: 1) If an artist becomes active again, we'd need to place them back in one of the other categories, plus that it implies that we're expecting to never see them again even though plenty of alumnied artists can make an appearance every now and then. 2) Retirement isn't a style, so if we do chose to organise them based on that attribute, new users would still find it cool to check out their work even though they're not as active as before.

So yeah, regardless of what system we choose, I want each artist to be equally represented.

wow, so hard to keep up, so happy this has picked up some speed

<h2>Who is Bummer?</h2>

<p>I'm a dude who has both been drawing and playing Pok&eacute;mon early on, but only in recent years have I decided to combine those two interests into one. I use both a tablet and a scanner in my work, while Photoshop CS2 is my right hand for creating and polishing my images. I've known about Smogon for a long time, and I made <a href="/forums/threads/84582/">my own thread</a> in Smeargle's Studio when I began to crave feedback for my work, as well as taking an opportunity to get to know my audience. I started to post in other threads, get familiar with people, and in the end I wanted to give something back to the community which had treated me well.<p>

<p>I have no professional art education though. I work as a licensed clinical laboratory scientist, so my actual job is entirely different ahaha. I'm a swede, born and raised, so that affects how available I can be on the forums and IRC. Not much of a competitive battler though, but right now I'm dipping my feet into the NU tier and we'll see if I can get around swimming or not.</p>

<h2>Achievements</h2>

<p>I can hold my breath for 116 seconds.</p>

<p>I also earned the artist badge for my contributions to the <a href="/smog/issue21/">21st issue</a> of The Smog.</p>

<p>Oh, and I run and manage a Pok&eacute;mon webcomic, <a href="http://www.rarecandytreatment.com/">Rare Candy Treatment</a>.</p>

Hey look I did a pastebin too look at me helping Bummer :D

http://pastebin.com/TKh8Cn3G

Also, there's a lot of art gone that used to be on the site itself, I could probably find some in the Google archives. For example, nothing from the Mentorship hub exists anymore as far as I know. And there was different art on the /sim/ page which belonged to yamipoli, which is why he had the Artist badge, and then there was that old Jirachi art that used to be all over the main /forums/ page as an icon in place of the XF speech bubbles that I'm p. sure Arkeis did but not at all certain about that, though I do know he did a crapton of art that used to be featured all across the top of the page on the forums and around the site (this is circa 2006 iirc).

I also wonder if like Kinneas's very first couple of Competitors still exist (as in prior to Setsuna's version of the Competitor circa 2011), those were beautiful, though I'd have to do some major digging to find them I think.

The only people that I legitimately do not know what art they did for the site are CactuarJoe and Maniaclyrasist. CactuarJoe I'm like 90% certain did something for the Smog but if Bummer's already gone through everything there that must not be it, in which case I'd assume it's CAP art or something. All I know is that I remember his art being really good. Maniaclyrasist I assume got his for RMT art but I cannot say for certain or in any capacity because he was around when it was only given out for actually doing something that was featured on the site somewhere.

Other than that if you need any help with wondering what art people did I can do my best to try to help.
