alright here's what I've tried to throw together to illustrate what I had in mind to organise the artist lists

The objective

Basically, I really dislike how a clear majority of the page is currently empty white space, and that given the number of our artists, the page becomes really long as a result when they're all in one list. So any solution that makes better use of the page's space is better than the default list imo

So how do we go around this?

The standard

This is what I had envisioned from the start. Nothing fancy (visually, that is), just several lists instead of one. If we were to sort artists based on their names, this would probably be the version to adjust, but since we're not THAT many, we'd probably only end up with a few names under most letters.

The enlister

anto mentioned this to me yesterday, and to be quite honest I never really thought about it. The benefit is that visitors can overview all the categories at once (provided they all fit on their screen), although I'm not entirely sold on it either.

The chimera

Essentially a combination of the two above, although one thing I forgot while making this picture is to have the names evenly distributed across all three columns rather than having a fixed minimum list length.

so whadya think

ALSO, I've said this elsewhere, but when you edit in the contribtions all artists have done for the smog and whatnot, put that part below their personal Links (art thread, website, and so on), since the former only leads to individual contributions while the latter is dedicated to the artists themselves.

Who is Arkeis?

Formerly known as aragornbird, Arkeis is long regarded as Smogon's resident artist. Arkeis' artwork was—for many, many years—a welcome to anyone visiting Smogon's main page. In fact, the logo Smogon currently uses is of Arkeis' design.

In many ways, Arkeis was one of the founding fathers of Smeargle's Studio, being the original (and sole) moderator as a near-constant presence. While he no longer moderates, Arkeis still visits the studio from time to time and can suddenly appear as a fearsome competitor in various contests.

Smogon Biography

Arkeis has accomplished plenty of things during his stay at Smogon. Being the earliest moderator of Smeargle's Studio, it is without doubt that said forum's development was affected by his high-quality art pieces. In the Create-A-Pokémon department, he submitted the winning designs for both Arghonaut and Krilowatt, while also making the sprites for creations such as Kitsunoh, Cyclohm, Colossoil, and Voodoom. He has also won plenty of art contests hosted in the studio, be it of the monthly variant or standalone events (seen below), and like most artists, he has also illustrated various articles for The Smog.

Art preferences

Arkeis' style is undoubtedly the peak of professionalism, and it seems almost unfair to attempt to describe it in a few sentences. Vibrant colours and clean line art are the bread-and-butter of Arkeis' pieces, but it is the intense detail that makes his artwork memorable: he often works at large sizes to add extra highlights and shades. For this reason, his work is comparable to a tapestry, which can be looked at for hours on end.

I'm not a very interesting person lol so this was hard to write sorry for lateness. lemme know if I did something wrong

Who is 13ulbasaur?

Hi! I'm 13ulbasaur, or 13ulb, Bulbasaur, Bulby, Thirteen-Ulbasaur, One-Three-Ulbasaur... I'm a high school student, hoping to graduate next year and get accepted into a university to enrol into a Bachelor of Computer Graphic Design course. To be honest I sort of gave up on art as a dream career a few years back, thinking to focus on something else and simply play with art as a hobby. However I ended up becoming extremely interested in graphic design, and having some skill in art is good for it so I picked it back up again. Still however, my main focus is graphic design, so my art still hasn't improved very much over the past year or two since I still haven't been paying much attention to it until I found myself chugging stuff out for Smogon. As a result, I don't really do personal art for anything besides Smogon, embarrassingly enough, so pretty much everything I've done outside of school (and sometimes in school) is Pokemon related. My portfolio isn't looking too good...

Smogon Biography
 • made some dumb posts on the OU forum.
 • obsessed with Furfrou, made an OU team with Furfrou to post in the RMT section.
 • refused suggestions to not use Furfrou.
 • later made a Furfrou umbrella.
 • finally decide to open an art thread because I had to show off my Furfrou umbrella.
 • apparently bummer thought my art was k so i got approved
 • ended up making art for stuff
 • don't actually do much on smogon besides master lurking
 • yay
Art preferences
As a dumb amateur artist, I don't really have much in the way of preferences. I'm embarrassingly lousy at traditional mediums besides the basic pencil (I was a very stubborn kid, if only I could go back and slap little me), so I mostly just use that and the tablet. I always go for the tiny Wacom ones, because those are cheap and I'm cheap. As far as art programs go, I mainly use Photoshop and occasionally Illustrator for vector stuff. I’ve been using Photoshop ever since my dad bought my sister and I CS2 for like 5 bucks because lol gl finding actual legit programs in Malaysia at the time. We didn’t have a tablet, but we used the pen tool to (painfully) line things in. Good times.

 • Tumblr - Smaller bits and pieces of stuff gets updated on here often before it arrives in the bulk post on Smogon (if I remember). I still need to use it more though.
 • DeviantArt - Not updated in a long time and no plan on updating because deviantart is cancer but it’s a great source to look at and laugh and cringe at old work done by an edgy LOL so RanDOM xDDD *holds up spork* 12 year old kid from years ago.

Quoting this so I won't forget about it.

I also remembered that the CAP Gallery is a thing, so there are plenty of artists with stuff featured there that can't be found elsewhere. Not sure whether or not we're gonna link to those pages if we wanna highlight CAP entries on our hub or not, but either way, I'm currently going through the old CAP art threads to see if there are any other good submissions I can salavage.

I'm aware that other users have done this, but I prefer if the biography isn't a list and a bit more coherent when it comes to sentences. Wouldn't be too hard to rewrite it myself, but just throwing it out there to anyone else thinking of writing theirs up.

Who is Birkal?

As one of Smogon's newest artists, I've contributed quite a bit already to projects like The Smog and The Create-A-Pokemon project. Although I only started contributing artwork to the site a few months ago, I have already drawn over fifty pieces for the latest two issues of The Smog. As one of the moderators of CAP, I also enjoy getting involved in the highly competitive art polls that take place every few months by handing out positive feedback and throwing my own hat into the ring. I'm also a piano performance major and I love to contribute compositional works and feedback to the Smeargle's Studio Music Thread. As side hobbies, I enjoy studying biology, rock climbing, and curling competitively.

Fun fact: Fatecrashers forced me into an art thread by using his Super Moderator powers; the unholy mess can be found here.

Achievements

I've drawn for the past two CAP projects and plan on doing even more in the future. I've also received a Smogon Artist Badge for my work with The Smog. Finally, I am one of the Site Staff members who helps upload artwork to Smogon's articles.

Bummer Among the options you provided, I like "the chimera" the most. It's highly legible and also looks the most proportional on the page.

In response to Sunday's post, what alternative would you prefer for grouping all retired artists together? If you want them to be split up into the other categories, I'll need some help since I'm not equally familiar with all of them.

As for the MAC section, should we (1) do away with it completely if it isn't really needed, (2) merge it with the Gallery page, or (3) keep it as it is?

i much prefer this indentation and spacing style. a lot more organised

except the missing spaces between
and
. but be nice rhythms!

Um I don't know if this is the right format for my page since mine only has the "Who is Blue Frog?" and "Achievements" sections, but I just followed what HellaHellaStyle/brightobject/13ulbasaur did. Thanks Snobalt by the way for already doing the links and stuff.

Who is Blue Frog?

Hi Smogon! I’m Blue Frog. I’m a high schooler who enjoys art, although at the moment my prospects with art in college/professionally remain a bit blurry. I used to battle a bit but I haven't recently. I also like writing and music by Ellie Goulding. That’s pretty much it.

Smogon Biography

I joined Smogon three years ago as a kid with little experience in art. I think my first post was in the CAP forums, where I got infracted for breaking image size rules. My early pieces are pretty cringeworthy; I would post 7 or 8 times in a row in my thread without getting replies. Overall, I was bad.

I became an approved artist in August 2013, but I really wasn’t good enough, and soon I got re-rejected from that position. It took me almost exactly a year to get my skills up to par; I still did Smog art (Bummer had to painstakingly critique each of my pieces before they could be submitted), but I also worked for other parts of the site. It was a year filled with rejection—I was outright forbidden to do Smog art near the end of it—but my skills improved dramatically, thanks in no small part to Bummer and the rest of the Smeargle's Studio community. By June 2014 I was a fully approved artist. By August I had my artist’s badge.

Since joining I’ve done countless requests, placed decently well in three CAP contests, written a Smog article (and several Smeargle’s Studio updates), won 2 MACs, and gotten the Smog Award for Most Improved Artist in 2013 (not in that order). I’m still learning when it comes to art, but I suppose I’m an example of how much you can grow as an artist on Smogon if you stick with it, and how supporting the Smeargle’s Studio community can be.

Art Preferences

I mostly do digital art (my tablet is an Intuos Pen and Touch; I use Paint tool SAI and Photoshop), although lately I’ve been trying to branch out into traditional mediums. Despite being somewhat of a veteran on Smogon I’m still not that experienced overall, so I’m still dabbling and trying to figure out what works for me.

Sure.

Cartoonists

Lineart, flat colors, and shading. These three components are for the most part all you need to make a good illustration, and it is within this category that a sheer majority of Smogon's artists thrive in.

Having a broader knowledge of light, colors, and landscapes, many of these artists are considered to be the best Smeargle's Studio has to offer, and also belong to the group of artists that has the longest track record on Smogon.

Spriters

The art badge was for some time not rewarded to spriters since there were no need of any sprites, but with the popularity of Create-A-Pokemon, as well as the Sprite Project that creates sprites from Gen IV onwards, it became clear that these pixel artisans also needed some well deserved aknowledgement for their craft.

Some artists I'm still unsure about, but they can be in the Cartoonist section until we know any better.

As for the MAC section, should we (1) do away with it completely if it isn't really needed, (2) merge it with the Gallery page, or (3) keep it as it is?
Merge it with Gallery. There's plenty of art we could feature in there while still having it organised in various categories, like Featured Artists, Contests, recent Smog/facebook art, and maybe even CAP art (althouh I'll need to speak with Birkal/Doug) about that. So out of all the sections, the Gallery could be the one that's closest to a 'news feed', where we make an art related post that can later be sorted into the other categories when another news replaces it.

The Artist badge was, for some time, not rewarded to spriters, as there was no need for any sprites, but with the popularity of Create-A-Pokémon as well as the XY Sprite Project, which creates Gen V-style sprites, it became clear that these pixel artisans also needed some well-deserved acknowledgement for their craft.

Lineart, flat colors, and shading. These three components are, for the most part, all you need to make a good illustration, and it is within this category that a majority of Smogon's artists thrive.

Just so that it isn't uploaded in a jiffy: The cartoonists aren't all in alphabetical order, and I thought about later how a redefinition of Painters can allow more people to fit within that list, but feel free to HTML it in the meantime.

And here's the full list of popular/relevant threads, should've posted it sooner since I only had to add a couple of threads for it to be done. You guys can feel free to discuss on how you'll choose to organise this, although just a plain list on an entire page doesn't seem like a good choice. Iirc Bummer proposed for the links to be divided into questions depending on what the reader is looking for (like "Want to contribute?" , "Are you new to Smeargle's Studio?") which is certainly a better approach.

Here's a list of popular threads that are certainly worth taking a look if you're planning on getting involved with the Smeargle's Studio's community. If you want to check out everything this forum has to offer, don't hesitate to visit the following links!

Informational Threads

Smeargle's Studio rules and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) - If you're thinking about posting in the forum, the first thing you should do is to take a look and read this thread so you can be aware of what you should and shouldn't do. Knowing the rules makes your time on the forums better and makes the moderator's time much easier. Aside from that, if you have any questions about Smeargle's Studio, you came to the right place! Feel free to make a post with your question and a staff member will have an answer for you shortly.

Smeargle's Studio Directory and General Info - As the name suggests, this thread contains the basic, general info for both experienced and new artists along with a few links that'll lead you to some useful threads. The thread itself contains quite a bit of info for a newcomer and it might be a lot to take in at first, but taking your time to read it is surely a wise choice.

Smeargle's Laptop Rules - If you are more interested in graphical arts such as banners and signatures or pixel art of any kind, you've probably decided to take a look at the Smeargle's Laptop subforum. Much like the Studio's rules, you should take your time to read these as well if you plan on posting in this subforum.
Resource Threads

These threads contain more in-depth and detailed information along with being a great place for artists of all skill levels to seek advice on their work.

RMA: Rate My Art! - A perfect place for an artists that's looking for some constructive criticism for his work, or for someone that is eager to help others by sharing his knowledge in order to help them improve. Everyone is free to submit their pictures or to offer a critique!

Professor Smeargle: Digital Art Tutorial / Tutoring Thread - If you're looking to improve your artistic skills, this is the right place for advice on that. With an insane amount of useful tutorials, guides and videos by successful smogon artists, you'll certainly want to pay this thread a couple of visits during your time on Smeargle's Studio.

Participate!

Once you get used to Smeargle's Studio environment and get familiar with the rules, you're probably going to want to participate and get more involved with the community. There's a wide choice of threads and events just waiting for you to take your part in them, and here they are.

Daily Draw Challenge - One of the many activities the PS! Art room has is the daily draw challenge, having a different, unusual theme for you to draw every day. There are no prizes involved, so this is just a casual thread that enables you to share your creations!

Monthly Art Contests - Ah, the MAC. A long-standing tradition here in Smeargle's Studio, with the concept of challenging the participants with a different theme of the contest each month. This is where artists of all types and skill levels compete to win over the public vote and earn their prize!

Collaboration Thread - As the name says, you can collaborate with other smogon artists and share the results here! Maybe you have a sketch or some line art that you don't plan on finishing? If so, pay this thread a visit and share some of the unfinished work you have, there may be some fellow artists interested in finishing it.

Battle Free for All - Another fun, casual thread where you try to think of ways to defeat the current pokemon champion through an art piece. Take a shot at playing, reserve a spot and brainstorm ideas for a battle scene!

The Smeargle's Studio Writing Thread - We're not only about visual art, and this thread proves it! Share your short and long stories here, as well as feedback on the stories of others. Or just enjoy reading all the amazing stuff your fellow Smeargle's Studians wrote.

The Smeargle's Studio Music Megathread - Your very own music box! Embrace your musical talents and share recordings of either you playing or singing or someone else performing a song that you wrote. If singing isn't your cup of tea, you can always listen to the creations of other talented smogon musicians.

Smeargle's Studio Photography Thread - Anything and everything photography related is shared and discussed here. Talk about cameras that you want or have, or explore various photography tutorials.

Art Stream Announcements Thread - For all of you out there that want to get into streaming, you can check out this thread for general streaming tips, announcing your own stream or to check out if and when are various smogon artists streaming themselves!

Contribute!
Maybe you are interested in offering your artistic skills to various forum projects? If that's the case, here are some threads that are worth taking a look!

Artwork for Tournaments - As you may know, there's a lot of tournaments happening around Smogon forums, and this thread is the place where those in need request artwork for them. Everyone with some artistic skill is able to help out as well as give thoughtfull criticism to those who still need some advice. Aside from that, you can always just visit the thread to check out some of the fantastic examples of tournament logos.
The Workshop - Much like the Artwork for Tournaments thread, here's where people who start various projects and threads can request images to make the thread more appealing to the readers. If you're willing to help and have some spare time in your hands, you should definitely consider visiting The Workshop!

Art for Articles - The numerous on-site articles about subjects such as battle strategy or anything related to competitive Pokemon play are always in need of quality illustrations. Here is where you can sign up to illustrate an article of your choice! Along with that, if you have issues with too tight drawing deadlines, worry not! There are no set deadlines for you to finish your artwork, although you shouldn't drag the process too much.

Artwork for Facebook - Smogon's quite popular facebook page is also a great place for offering your talents, so if you're planning on making an effort on an art piece, why not make it a contribution for our facebook page? Go ahead and reserve a spot now!

XY Sprite Project: Pixel Pefrect - For all the talented spriters out there, this is the ideal place for contributing your pixel making skills. The sprites you make will be used in Pokemon Showdown and Smogon! This thread may not be a perfect place for a newcomer in spriting, as the project looks for a certain amount of quality.

Painters:

With broad knowledge of lighting, colors, and landscapes, many of these artists are considered to be the best that Smeargle's Studio has to offer and also belong to the group of artists that has the longest track record on Smogon.

Spriters:

The Artist badge was, for some time, not rewarded to spriters, as there was no need for any sprites, but with the popularity of Create-A-Pokémon as well as the XY Sprite Project, which creates Gen V-style sprites, it became clear that these pixel artisans also needed some well-deserved acknowledgement for their craft.

Traditional Artists:

Making traditional illustrations for digital purposes may sound like an odd approach, but the users below not only know their way around pencils and brushes, their craft also rivals that of digital artists.

Vector Artists:

Able to create slick lineart and fancy typographics, these artists are known for their fancy banners for various tournaments, team logos, and anything else that requires clean images above all.
