I'm super late to this, but wow! I saw those artist pages back when I first started drawing but figured I had to be around for a long time to be nominated for one so never asked about it, heh. Glad to see this is being brought back. I'm posting this before class starts so I can't write anything yet, but I'll type something up this afternoon. Thanks for including me. C:

Alright, I've finally managed to write up something, hopefully there aren't too many grammar mistakes in there.^^
I'd appreciate if you could place the attached image under "Art Preferences" in original size as seen below. Also, could you add the "Article Workshop" link, and separate the two "Facebook" links on my artist profile? :P

Who is Cretacerus?
Hey everyone, I'm Cretacerus and currently a student of biology in Germany. Art has always been one of my hobbies, and I particularly enjoy doing sketches and studies of various animals in my free time.
My first encounter with Pokemon was in Generation IV, which in my humble opinion introduced the best fossil Pokemon to date, Cranidos. In my ambition to create the perfect dinosaur themed team, I eventually stumbled upon the website known as Smogon, which supplied me with the perfect resources needed for my cause.

Smogon Biography
After lurking Smogon for a while, I finally decided to create an account in order to participate in the Create-A-Pokemon project. This also brought about my first attempts at digital art, both of which did surprisingly well in the polls and ended up being displayed in the CAP Gallery.
From there, I continued to hone my digital drawing skills, and eventually set up an art thread in my semester break to get some practice and feedback from the more experienced artists, which ultimately led to me being approved as an on-site artist.
I particularly enjoyed doing artwork for our former web-zine The Smog, and am glad to have my artwork featured on the cover page of the last two issues to be released.

Besides doing art, I can often be found hanging out in the Wi-Fi Section of Smogon, on my continuous search for new and interesting dinosaur Pokemon. Over time, I've managed to built up one of the most exquisite collections of fossil breeds the website has to offer, so definitely check out my trade thread if you're a fossil enthusiast yourself!

Art Preferences
Most of my casual sketches and drawings are created by traditional means, especially pencils, chalks and pastels, which are convenient and quick to use. However, I'll try to do digital art once in a while as well in order to improve on my skills, and when clean digital images are needed for on-site purposes.
For my digital art, I use the program Paint.NET in combination with the mouse, by tracing over previously drawn pencil sketches. The exact process can be seen in my dedicated step-by-step-tutorial here.

I'm not dead, I promise

The HTML crew is beginning to see the end of the tunnel (shout out to anto Snobalt and Rhythms ), so while the profiles aren't a completed chapter, I feel like we can look upon the other territories. The very frontpage of the hub could use something akin to a table of contents, with link to the studio's resources, artist profiles, and the gallery, so that they don't have to find the small list at the far left to navigate themselves around. But right now, the Gallery seems like the next area I'd like to improve, mainly because I want to save all the art we need before faulty image hosting will erase some stuff from existence. MAC, imo, doesn't need a main directory of its own, but should instead be a category within the Gallery, along with other events that we can use to feature art on-site. What those categories should be, however, is what I'm open to hear from the rest of you, but to give you an idea, here's what I'm proposing:

Top of the page: The newest event/featured art, with an explanation about it, the art, and the artist(s) involved. So basically, a small showcase of what's happening in the studio or something else art related, which will later be put into one of our below categories once other news replaces it.

MAC: We know what this is.

Featured Artist: This could be connected to what's already shown on facebook and Twitter, where we host some works of a new or up-and-coming artist along with some other info or critique. brightobject could definitely provide thoughts on this one, as I believe you currently decide on whom to feature.

Featured Art: Some times, it's nice to take some examples from on-going projects to highlight some notable contributions, such as Battle For All, Workshop/Tournament Art, Daily Draw, you name it. These could be done in pieces of three, as long as all images are taken from the same source.

Special Events: Contests unrelated to MAC definitely fit in this one, as well as other more short-lived projects (Secret Santa, Card Project), can be featured here.

CAP: Essentially just a link to the CAP Gallery. Will need to speak with Birkal and DougJustDoug later and see if other cool artwork can be added onto there, since I just recently went through all the submission threads and there were some really cool shit that isn't presented in the current Galleries.

Have anything else of interest that doesn't fit in what I wrote above? Do tell!

I noticed this might be a bit of an issue for people who don't specialise (I'd like to think I can do decently in cartooning), so it seems like they solely do this or that. Not sure of a good way to solve this issue as of yet, just throwing that out there. I feel like it could sorta end up misrepresenting some artists.
This is true and something that did concern me. One solution could be to have all specialist featured in Cartoonist/Illustrators, AND in the section of their specialised skill, thus grouping them with artists of similar skill level while also highlighting how these artists have other special traits as well.

I'd say what I'm doing right now if more Featured Art than Featured Artist (I choose one piece per week to feature on l'Twueter). I can imagine the Featured Art thing linking to a gallery of all the featured art over the years? As well as Twitter-featured art we could add in FFA/WS art like you said.

And as for the specialist stuff, I think it might work better to have any artist put into any and all categories they think they specialise in, and then maybe create an alternate option for viewing (sort by artist) in which it would list each artist then their specialties? idk how long it would take to html that tho

I do like all the categories you listed, but another one that we might consider is possibly sprite art? It's not something that gets featured anywhere too often other than in its own subforum, and considering that it is something that deserves a subforum, it certainly deserves a category of its own, or a subcategory. A neat gallery of some cool sprites would do justice to them, if not, the only place where the viewer might come across sprite art is if the weekly sprite contest happens to come back, thus putting it in the special events category.

Other than that, all sounds good. Kudos to the HTMLers for all the amazing work they've done so far.

I'm super busy with university and feel bad for not being able to help out more, especially knowing that the HTML trio have invested a lot of their time so far. I don't have any suggestions at the moment, but everything in the outline above sounds solid.

As for the categories issue, thinking of a clean solution is difficult. As a personal example, although I'm not a "real" spriter, I don't really mind being in that category because it's probably what I'm best known for.

This one sounds iffy to me, as outside of the sprite project, most of the sprites in the subforum are not original and/or rather amateur.

Wow, my artist's page already has my contributions linked. Thanks for the hard work on my behalf @_@

Here's my pagestuff:

(Edit: made it a bit shorter)

Who is Sephirona?

Hi! I'm Rona. I like tomatoes and avocados, and I love potatoes. I'm also a sucker for science fiction stories and some vidya games. Drawing's been a hobby of mine for as long as I can remember, and since I got my first Wacom tablet around 2009 I've been slowly teaching myself about digital illustration and design. These days I'm not always able to contribute as much as I used to because I'm working my way towards a computer science degree, so I'm sometimes gone from Smogon for a while. I'm not dead yet, I promise.

Smogon Biography

I first wandered into Smogon's wifi section in April of 2009 shortly after the release of Pokemon Platinum. I'd been spending way too much time trying to hatch a shiny Milotic, and while googling dejectedly about my prospects I discovered RNG manipulation. I really enjoyed doing that for a while, but wandered off again eventually, eternal e-hobo that I am.

Two years later, I returned when Black and White were released and discovered Smogon's Wifi IRC channel. The researchers were hard at work implementing BW RNGing into RNGReporter, and I was lucky enough to be able to help them test their programs a few times, which was oodles of fun. Sadly, I didn't get a response when I attempted to submit work to The Smog, and eventually I wandered off again.

Finally, in 2013 I came back after Pokemon X and Y were released to a refreshingly active Smog art community made possible thanks to the efforts of Bummer. I applied to be an Approved Artist almost immediately, and was at last able to contribute to the site. I tried my hand at all sorts of things - logos, full-on illustration, stream overlays and banners for the SmogonU Twitch channel, gif animation - and learned a lot while surrounded some of Smogon's most talented artists and writers. After 4 long years, I was able to earn my artist's badge, which, though now grey due to my long periods of inactivity, nevertheless brings back fond memories of all the years I spent here and all the fantastic people I've had the pleasure of meeting.

Art Preferences

My preference is to paint in a style somewhat reminiscent of 3D rendering, and I enjoy carving out my paintings as if they are two-dimensional sculptures. I enjoy (gently) pushing my boundaries and trying new styles, and after a stint at Tumblr creating and animating gif graphics for various fandoms I find I particularly enjoy incorporating a small amount of animation into my pieces as well. I have the least confidence in my knowledge of color theory and human anatomy, so I try my best to be brave and experimental when tackling my projects.

And then there are the times when I'm overcome with the desire to pick up my tablet pen and fill a canvas or two with messy sketches of potatoes and small snorlaxes. Most people tend not to see the results of these escapades, and most people probably never will. Mumble...mumble...mysterious.

I don't really have much to add here beyond saying that I will probably not be writing my own profile because I hate talking about myself. Unless you just want something along the lines of this:

Who is elcheeso?

Some guy. Does art once in a blue moon.

Achievements

Second place complainer about art (lost to yilx)
Can eat a whole block of cheese singlehandedly

Also on a somewhat separate note, it looks like some of the profiles (i.e. Bummer's) have the pictures in the middle of the article but others have them at the bottom. Is this intentional since Bummer has so many more articles than most, or what? Plus are all artists meant to have sample pictures, or is that only if they choose to have them?

updated :) randomly positioned. consistency is good, but change is also good, keeps it dynamic. i think it's been mostly done if the artists chooses it, but i'd rather keep the sample pictures because some of them are hugeeee, and the page takes ages to load. i think it also depends if the art is arleady uploaded somewhere on smogon e.g: sephirona. but i'll let Bummer answer this

anto Hey, thanks for uploading my profile. I didn't see a message about it so I was wondering if you forgot to add my fourth sample pic (the Espurr gif) or maybe chose not to add it? I did kinda want it there for variety, but I understand there might be size concerns. I just figured gifs would be okay since I've been allowed to use a few for Smog issues before. Bummer's samples are linked from imgur as well so maybe it doesn't matter if they're not hosted on Smogon?

---

Also, I noticed the "Biography" in my Smogon Biography section is misspelled. I'd try to queue the change myself but I don't remember how to log in to the system. Sorry ;v;

Ahh, it's three? I looked through the other profiles and saw Rocket Grunt had 5 previews so I thought it was okay to have a total of 5 images on the page. Oh well. Anyways, thanks again for your help!

Edit: I've figured out how to log in to the system so I'll just take away my articuno and replace it with my Espurr if that's okay

i'm alive guys! ive been taking care of updating the artists profiles with the recently uplaoded art, and i will take care of that for as long as i can.

Bummer maybe for the featured artists on the home page, we could do a slider with their best work

some of the old MACs have smog articles, maybe we could link them too

for the CAP thing, maybe we could do a sort of dex thing with all the mons created so far, and they link to their dex page. that's all i can i think about

Alright, time to do this one too

Who is Bummer?

I'm an amateur artist living in northern Sweden, where I support myself as a clinical medical scientist working in a microbiological laboratory during the days. You can usually find me chilling in #smeargle or the Art Room on Pokemon Showdown, trying my best to spread a positive attitude and annoying puns. I've been active on Smogon since January 2011 and has maintained a steady presence since then, be it helping out in the studio or completing quick art requests left and right. I still play Pokemon Games whenever they come out, and my favorite version to date is Pokemon Gold, with Pokemon Black being a close second.

Smogon Biography

I joined Smogon to plug my own webcomic I was working at the time called Rare Candy Treatment, and the positive responses made me stick around. Since just posting in my own art thread wouldn't do much good, I eventually started checking out the rest of the studio, as well as talking with other artists in #smeargle. It didn't take long to discover that Smogon, particularly The Smog and on-site Articles, was in need of art illustrations, and on August 25th 2012 I earned my artist badge.

Over time I became more involved with The Smog, contributing more images to the various articles, helping out with maintaining the art index, as well as writing and participating in various articles, Pokemon Biology and The Arterview being two such article series. On May 13th 2013 I joined the Smog Staff to lead the Art department alongside Birkal, where we evaluated the work of applying artists and tried our best to produce artwork for all articles each issue. I later on became the sole art leader, which was a position I held until The Smog, along with other media outlets, merged into Article Workshop.

When I worked as The Smog's Art Leader, I had for the most part a good idea about the progress of many artists as well as how often they contributed to the site, and could therefore nominate various artists for the art badge to Zracknel and Birkal, the Artist Badge leaders at the time. But when Birkal stepped down from that position, Zracknel asked me to co-lead with him, and I was thus promoted to super moderator March 2nd 2014, a position I'm still holding at the time of writing this bio. During this time, I expanded the quality control we originally had for The Smog to cover all media outlets and online articles, where artists needed to become approved before contributing to more demanding areas, and to be eligible for receiving the art badge along with their art contributions. That way, the art badge no longer becomes an easy badge to earn, but instead shows that anyone wearing it possesses a valuable skill of good quality.

Apart from the media forums, I lurk most other forums as well, with the occasional posts in Firebot, Rarely Used and CAP. While I'm genuinely interested in the mindworks of a Smogon battler, I personally don't battle all that much on the simulator, even though I keep telling myself I'll get serious one day.

Art preferences

I've used a dusty version of Photoshop CS2 my whole life, and I still don't see much reason to upgrade. Alongside it, I have a scanner and a Bamboo Wacom tablet to bring my artwork onto the computer, where I nowadays purely use the latter for both sketches and final touches. I have a "quick and dirty" style for the most part, drawing both lineart and highlights with a thick brush to create a cartoonish result, but I've played around with various techniques before and can put in some extra detail when required.

Links

My art thread - This contains my very earliest posts on Smogon and is a place where I still share some art that isn't already featured elsewhere.

ium's Arterview of me - If you're still curious about me and some of the opinions I have on stuff, then this is the place to visit.

Rare Candy Treatment - The webcomic that I was involved with during my early Smogon years and quite some time before arriving here, which I officially ended June 20th 2014. From the first to the last strip, it's one of the primary reasons why I continuously tried to improve my art, and while there are a lot of comic strips I now feel awkward looking at, it still fills me with joy to see the progress I've made since then.

DeviantArt account - Don't post there as often as I used to, but hey, if you're on dA, here's one way to check out my earlier works.

Tumblr - Because everyone has one of these nowadays.

Actually prefer having an indent and then spacing in the Links section, instead of a dotted list. Anyone else agree?

also, anto is a champ for putting energy into this, if anything it makes me feel worse for not writing more :E

Alright, so I wrote something for the frontpage, listing the various sections I believe should cover everything we want to feature. None of it is set in stone, but I needed something to get things moving. Both the Info/FAQ section and the History section has currently nothing written for it, so that's something I want to write another day. Tikitik provided the list of Resources on the first page, so we can definitely use it for that section. Another thing I didn't mention in the Info/FAQ description is user tutorials, so if others agree, we could definitely put some of the more fleshed out user tutorialsfrom Professor Smeargle in there.

also, the banner I used is slightly smaller, 400x400 instead of 500x500, which I feel works better.

Welcome to the hub dedicated to Smogon's art community, where we aim to host numerous artwork and feature the hardworking artists who contributes to our site, as well as storing the resources already present in our main forum, Smeargle's Studio. Whether or not you're here to just look around or learn more about our corner of Smogon's University, we hope that you'll enjoy your stay!

Don't know where to go from here? Then take a gander at our sections below, that are also available in the list to your left.

Info and FAQ

This section contains basic info about Smeargle Studio, how the forum works, what the artist badge is all about, along with other handy stuff to learn. If you're a new artist on the block, then this would be a good place to check out, as it covers what you need to know about contributing art to Smogon.

Gallery

This is the heart and soul of any artist establishment, where we showcase various artwork that has been produced for various forum activities, contests, and events. Illustrations made for articles and media announcements aren't included since those are already featured in their appropriate places, so this section is primary for images that don't have a reliable image host. If you want to peruse article artwork, head over to the artist profiles. Speaking of which...

Artist Profiles

When artist has contributed enough artwork to Smogon of good quality, they'll earn the artist badge, which among other things comes with their own profile on this very hub! If you want to know a bit more about our resident artists or retired veterans (or at least as much they're willing to share :V), make sure to pay their profile a visit. We've also listed all the articles and sites where these artists have their art hosted, so if you want to peruse the artwork of a particular artist, this is the place to be.

Resources

Smeargle's Studio has a whole bunch of interesting threads and activities that all users, new and old, can participate in. This section is particularly useful for those new to the studio and could use a good overview of what's available to them, be it useful information or fun activities. If you're also a talented artist looking to contribute with your artwork, this is also a good place to see what avenues are open for you.

History

Plenty of things have happened since Smeargle's Studio was created, and even before its inception! If you'd like to check out a timeline containing various events and happenings that's been related to Smogon's art community over the years, then this should make for a nice walk down memory lane.

I responsed to this on IRC, but the gist of it is that since we're still filling out all the profiles, odds are that other neat improvements will be made along the way, so I'll hold off making the ultimate template for now to apply to all of them.

Wrote something for Info/FAQ page. Pretty much all sections will lead to a page of their own to flesh out the topic, but what's written below should make for a good starting point.
Info and FAQ

If you've arrived on this page, it means you have many questions and is in grave need of answers, or you're just a sensible person who make a habit of reading up on any new place you visit. Regardless of which description fits you the most, we welcome your intitiative to learn more, so take a gander on our topics and questions we've listed below.

If you have a question that isn't answered in any of the sections below, feel free to hit up any of the studio's moderators: elcheeso, RitterCat, Layell, and Bummer.

Forum Rules and Etiquette

The Dos and the Don'ts. If you're new to Smeargle's Studio, this should always be your first stop before moving deeper into the rabbit hole.

How to get started

Basic information about what to think about if you wanna set up a thread of your own, how to get to know other resident artists, and what places that are especially welcoming to new artists.

Are there any art chat rooms?

Sure is! The short answer is #smeargle and the Art room on Pokémon Showdown, but you can read the long answer by clicking the above link.

Where can I contribute art to Smogon?

Lots of places, such as the forum banners, tournament logos, simulator sprites, but most of all; illustrations for the articles written for both the site and our media outlets. However, some areas are more demanding than others, so make sure to read this section before deciding where to help out.

What does it mean to be an approved artist?

As mentioned above, some areas are more demanding in the sense that certain content is viewed by more users, which means that there's more emphasis on quality than usual. What this means for our artists is explained inside the link, along with the reasoning why we have a quality check in the first place.

What is the Artist badge?

Artists who contributes with several images of good quality to Smogon are rewarded with this shiny trinket for their user profile. Apart from being acknowledged as an official Smogon artists, there are more benefits connected to it, so read about it inside the link if you're curious to know more.

How can I improve the studio?

If you'd like to know how to ease the burden on the moderation team, or just how to be a positive presence inside the studio, then go ahead and read some more!
