Week 96: Offensive Trapping Heatran
upload_2016-2-13_11-55-27.png

Heatran @ Leftovers / Air Balloon / Power Herb
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Taunt
- Toxic / Solar Beam

p2

Banned deucer.

Conkeldurr @ Assault Vest
Ability: Guts
EVs: 252 Atk / 236 SpD / 20 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Mach Punch
- Drain Punch
- Ice Punch / Poison Jab
- Knock Off

Really solid switchin to Heatran because it doesn't really care about being trapped by Magma Storm or being hit by Toxic. Conkeldurr can easily OHKO with Drain Punch followed by Mach Punch. Magma Storm preventing double switches can be pretty annoying for Conkeldurr though.

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 236 SpD Assault Vest Conkeldurr: 115-136 (32.7 - 38.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock

252+ Atk Conkeldurr Drain Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 270-320 (83.5 - 99%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Defensive Salamence as a counter

King Rurik (Salamence) @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 180 Def / 80 Spe
Timid / Jolly Nature
- Defog
- Fire Blast
- Hydro Pump /Earthquake
- Roost

Thanks to its pretty solid natural bulk and excellent typing, Defensive Salamence is a perfect counter to Magma Storm Heatran. Salamence resists everything on this Heatrans set, allowing it to easily switch-in on it and have a high chance to 2HKO Heatran with Hydro Pump or if Heatran isn't running Air Balloon, have an extremely high chance to OHKO it with Earthquake. In addition, if Heatran lacks Toxic, it will be doing next to nothing to the ferocious dragon.

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 98-116 (24.9 - 29.5%) -- guaranteed 5HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 248 HP / 0 SpD Salamence: 39-46 (9.9 - 11.7%) -- possibly the worst move ever

0 SpA Salamence Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 162-192 (50.1 - 59.4%) -- 78.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Salamence Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 356-420 (110.2 - 130%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Soft Counter

Garchomp @ Lum Berry
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Swords Dance

Yeah, so Swords Dance Garchomp is a really uncommon Pokemon these days, and one that really proves to mess people up, thanks to everyone outright expecting bully Garchomp. Due to its great overall bulk and typing, Garchomp is able to wall Heatran, set up on it with Swords Dance or OHKO back at any time with Earthquake. Even if Heatran has an Air Balloon, all it takes it a teammate's U-turn or Garchomp's Dragon Claw to break it. Lum Berry allows it to get rid of Toxic once, making Heatran even worse against it. It doesn't like switching into Heatran's attacks multiple times, however, making it only a soft counter.
252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 93-111 (26 - 31%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Garchomp: 113-133 (31.6 - 37.2%) -- 85.6% chance to 3HKO

Dragonite @ Leftovers
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 216 HP / 64 Atk / 228 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Extreme Speed
- Dragon Claw
- Roost

SpDef Dragonite as Counter

It just can take every single hit of Heatran, breaks it balloon with DClaw/ESpeed and ko it with an Earthquake. Simple and Clean. Magma Storm chip damage can annoy, but Multiscale makes it work and two magma storms plus the chip damage in two turns will do around 40% of damage. Also if it try to taunt you after magma storm, you can just click some move to break the balloon and after ko it, but it will be faster if its the SolarBeam set. It can catch this tran set almost every single time, since Fire Punch is very more common than Earthquake. Toxic chip damage is annoying too, but if you're using this set, you probably will have heal bell support.

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 216 HP / 228 SpD Multiscale Dragonite: 33-39 (8.7 - 10.3%) -- possibly the worst move ever
252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 216 HP / 228 SpD Dragonite: 66-78 (17.5 - 20.6%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery(Without Multiscale)
252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 216 HP / 228 SpD Dragonite: 26-31 (6.8 - 8.2%) -- possibly the worst move ever(Without Multiscale)

64+ Atk Dragonite Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 408-484 (126.3 - 149.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 252 HP / 144 SpD / 112 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Roost
- Swords Dance

Gliscor can switch in on any move from Hetaran, outspeed it with this spread and although, due to Magma Storm damage cancelling out Posion Heal damage, it's technically 2HKOed, Magma Storm's bad accuracy makes it very unlikely for the Air Balloon set to beat it if it keeps using Roost untill it misses, Knocks Off when it does, and then EQs Heatran. If Heatran doesn't have a Balloon, it straight-up gets OHKOed by EQ.

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 252 HP / 144 SpD Gliscor: 174-205 (49.1 - 57.9%) -- 8.2% chance to 2HKO after Poison Heal

Infernal

Banned deucer.

Manaphy
@ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 240 HP / 96 SpA / 172 Spe
Modest Nature
- Tail Glow
- Scald
- Rest
- Rain Dance

Manaphy deals with Magma Storm Heatran very nicely and makes for a solid counter. It doesn't mind being trapped and is able to keep itself healthy between Rest, Rain Dance, and Hydration. Solar Beam's power is significantly reduced when Rain Dance is in effect, only managing 32.9 - 38.9% to Manaphy. If Heatran Taunt's on the switch and dares to use Solar Beam afterwards, Manaphy outspeeds, stomachs the attack (65.3 - 77.3%), and 2HKOes back with Scald. This aside, Manaphy is able to abuse Heatran's presence by powering itself up with Tail Glow and become all the more threatening. All in all, Manaphy is a good response to offensive trapping Heatran and can exploit it in various ways to benefit itself.

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe or 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid / Hasty Nature
- Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Focus Blast / Earthquake
- Roost

Role: Check

Magma Storm does a fair amount in sun, so it has issues switching in, especially if rocks are up for reasons that should be obvious. Still, it has a 4x resistance to Solar Beam and an immunity to Earth Power, and both Focus Blast and Earthquake will OHKO Heatran back after Stealth Rock (though EQ requires the latter spread/nature), and if running EQ, Charizard's own Solar Beam can pop the Air Balloon and almost always guarantee the KO next turn even without rocks.

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard Y in Sun: 109-129 (36.7 - 43.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Charizard Y: 29-34 (9.7 - 11.4%) -- possible 9HKO

252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Solar Beam vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 36-42 (11.1 - 13%) -- possibly the worst move ever (why this one says that while the other doesn't, especially since this one does more damage, is probably because of lefties, although the only reason to use this in the first place is if AB)
252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 288-340 (89.1 - 105.2%) -- 31.3% chance to OHKO
4 Atk Mega Charizard Y Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 284-336 (87.9 - 104%) -- 25% chance to OHKO

Earthquake Latios as a Check

Latios @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock / Psychic
- Earthquake
- Defog / Roost

Latios resists all of Heatran's moves and doesn't care much of being Taunted. In return, Earthquake OHKOes offensive Heatran variants with ease. However, the Latios user has to play carefully if one of Heatran's teammate is a Pursuit-trapper since after Heatran is KOed, Latios will most likely be KOed by Pursuit after LO recoil, Magma Storm damage (direct and residual) and, possibly, SR (and maybe even Toxic). If Heatran holds an Air Balloon, Latios should use Psyshock/Psychic on turn 1 before KOing it with Earthquake.
252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Latios: 75-89 (25 - 29.7%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

0 Atk Life Orb Latios Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 328-390 (101.5 - 120.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Name: Alakazam
Status: Check

Alakazam @ Alakazite
Ability: Magic Guard
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball
- Encore

Mega Alakazam trolls Heatran as it Traces Flash Fire and doesn't care about Taunt and Toxic. It also survives 2 Earth Powers (unless hazards are up) and can OHKO back with Focus Blast.

252 SpA Mega Alakazam Focus Blast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 312-368 (96.5 - 113.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mega Alakazam: 103-122 (41 - 48.6%) -- 73.4% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

Gyarados as a Counter (Honestly, almost any set would suffice as a hard check - although RestTalk is the counter)

Gyarados @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 248 HP / 104 Def / 156 SpD
Careful Nature
- Waterfall
- Roar
- Rest
- Sleep Talk

EVs are the standard dex spread - lets it take two Zen Headbutts from Mega Meta after rocks and Intimidate, while the rest is dumped into special bulk. It can laugh off any hit from Heatran and easily 2HKO back:

252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Gyarados: 102-121 (25.9 - 30.7%) -- 20.8% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery (3HKO not relevant since it's single use)

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 248 HP / 156+ SpD Gyarados: 63-75 (16 - 19%) -- possible 6HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery

0 Atk Gyarados Waterfall vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 200-236 (61.9 - 73%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Air Balloon Heatran as a Counter

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Flash Cannon
- Stealth Rock / Stone Edge

So long as your Heatran doesn't get its balloon popped, you can switch this in without fear every single time. Stallbreaker Heatran literally can't touch it, while you can OHKO in return with Earth Power. It still beats opposing Air Balloon variants, since you can just pop their balloon with a Flash Cannon, while they have no means of popping yours.

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Heatran: 372-440 (115.1 - 136.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Heatran Magma Storm vs. Flash Fire Heatran: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time
Heatran Earth Power vs. Air Balloon Heatran: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time
252 SpA Heatran Solar Beam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Heatran: 31-36 (9.5 - 11.1%) -- possible 9HKO

Goodra @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 Def
Brave Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Curse
- Rest
- Outrage
- Earthquake

Resists anything it's coming into besides earth power (which still does like 19%) and can either curse or just EQ. It eats up any incoming damage and Heatran can't touch it except maybe using toxic. Of course, you can use the standard assault vest version with muddy water, but I've always used this set on goodra and find it efficient.

252 SpA Heatran Magma Storm vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Goodra: 57-68 (14.9 - 17.8%) -- possible 8HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Heatran Earth Power vs. 240 HP / 0 SpD Goodra: 69-82 (18.1 - 21.5%) -- possible 7HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Goodra Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heatran: 384-452 (118.8 - 139.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Azumarill @ Assault Vest
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 240 HP / 252 Atk / 16 SpD
Adamant Nature

Waterfall OHKOes after rocks, and Azu is only 2HKOed by Solar Beam so Azu can finish Heatran kickly before he gets worn down by Magma Storm
