Moves
========
Sleep Powder puts opposing Pokemon to sleep and cripples potential switch-ins that don't care about Tangrowth's other attacks. Giga Drain is Tangrowth's main STAB move and helps it stay healthy. Knock Off weakens opposing Pokemon by removing their item, which is useful in hindering them from doing their jobs. Hidden Power Fire helps Tangrowth reliably beat Ferrothorn and check Mega Scizor, while Leech Seed can be used to annoy switch-ins and gradually recover more HP, which is especially helpful if you're running Rocky Helmet. Hidden Power Ice helps beat Garchomp and Landorus-T but is best used if your team is weak to Gliscor. Earthquake hits Heatran on the switch, whittles down Mega Metagross, and hits Excadrill harder than Giga Drain. Stun Spore can be used as a secondary status option to cripple Pokemon that think they are safe after Sleep Powder has been used. Toxic is also an option if your team is weak to Calm Mind Slowbro or Fire-types like Talonflame.

Set Details
========
The HP EVs increase Tangrowth's overall bulk and maximize Regenerator recovery, while the Special Defense EVs allow Tangrowth to survive Life Orb Starmie's Ice Beam. The rest of the EVs are poured into Defense to maximize physical bulk so that Tangrowth can better check Excadrill, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Gyarados, among other Pokemon. A Relaxed nature boosts Defense and allows Tangrowth to use both physical and special moves without either being weakened, and Tangrowth doesn't need its subpar Speed for much anyway.

Usage Tips
========
Switch Tangrowth into Pokemon like Excadrill, Mega Metagross, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Gyarados, since it is a great check to them. Early-game, Knock Off is one of the better moves to use, as very few Pokemon appreciate switching into it. It is particularly helpful for wearing down Heatran and forcing Clefable to use Soft-Boiled more often. After items have been removed early-game with Knock Off, utilize Tangrowth as a pivot by switching into threats it walls and subsequently double out on a predicted switch to maximize the use of Regenerator and keep up momentum. Sleep Powder should be utilized to cripple threats that could potentially get out of hand and catch switch-ins like Talonflame and Tornadus-T off guard. Leech Seed should be used when you predict a switch to Pokemon like Heatran, which has no reliable recovery. It's also helpful for staying healthier against really strong attackers like Mega Metagross. Coverage moves should be used sparingly, since they are not particularly powerful. In a pinch, Tangrowth can be used to stomach almost any physical attack and retaliate with Sleep Powder or Stun Spore. As an example, Tangrowth can actually tank Jolly Mega Charizard X's Flare Blitz from full HP, although this is not generally advised.

Team Options
========
Other pivots like Rotom-W, Slowbro, Slowking, and Tornadus-T work great with Tangrowth by covering each other's type weaknesses and providing momentum, as well as being difficult to wear down thanks to the latter three's access to Regenerator. Rock-types such as Tyranitar and Mega Diancie make for excellent partners, since they check Flying- and Fire-types for Tangrowth, which in turn checks Ground- and Water-types for them very well. Latios removes entry hazards, which inhibit Tangrowth's Regenerator recovery, and it checks Mega Charizard Y and Keldeo. Heatran checks Fire- and Flying-types while Tangrowth can check Ground- and Water-types. Tangrowth is a nice switch-in to physical priority users that might threaten Mega Alakazam, which handily defeats Mega Venusaur for Tangrowth. Mega Charizard X can check opposing Grass- and Steel-types for Tangrowth, as well as absorb Will-O-Wisp from Rotom-W, while Tangrowth can switch into the majority of Mega Charizard X's checks.

Have used this a bunch recently and it's really underrated. Stun Spore deserves to be slashed imo, making Tang a lot harder to switch into, improving the offense matchup drastically, and putting less pressure on it to conserve Sleep Powder when facing stuff like PuP Lop. I'd also mention Slowking as a partner as well, since they make an almost perfect regen core, and Heatran of course.

Added some of that stuff and I think this has enough information for QC at this point. I'll capitalize some of the types and be more consistent with that soon but just wrote this on my phone.

Also for QC: if suggesting that I make Rocky Helmet the main item, please provide a different EV spread to utilize since this one was made by spread master TDK and it requires Leftovers to make sense

In the creative/underused sets thread, ben gay posted this set:

Tangrowth @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 204 Def / 56 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Sleep Powder
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Hidden Power [Fire] / Hidden Power [Ice] / Earthquake

EVs let you eat one LO Starmie Ice Beam, which is a decent benchmark.

i like this set

name: Defensive

move 2: Leech Seed
move 3: Giga Drain
move 4: Hidden Power [Fire] / Knock Off
item: Leftovers / Rocky Helmet
ability: Regenerator
nature: Relaxed
evs: 248 HP / 204 Def / 56 SpD

but it's up to you and other qc members, so id probably wait until the next guy checks. but that's my personal favourite set atm.

i wanna say mention sludge bomb in moves, but i don't really know if it works well outside of that pif stall build. + don't wanna put too much stuff into moves. D:

you could also mention that tangrowth can live pretty much any physical hit in the tier from full, which gives it a good chance to use sleep powder in the face of unboosted zard x and other strong hitters.
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Flare Blitz vs. 248 HP / 204+ Def Tangrowth: 336-396 (83.3 - 98.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery < im pretty sure this is the single strongest physical attack outside of mega hera's pin missile that tang can tank, pretty incredible. + it can heal off the damage fairly quickly with safe pivoting :0

this looks fine anyway, just elaborate on stuff in usage tips + team options a little more i suppose

qc 1/3

If you run max HP, then you only need 44 SpD EVs to survive LO Starmie's Ice Beam, so you can toss the rest into Def. However, I'd like to propose a spread of 244 HP / 216 Def / 48 SpD. HP EVs still maintain maximum Regenerator recovery, SpD EVs allow Tangrowth to survive that same Ice Beam, and Def EVs hit a jump point. Slightly bulkier on both sides than that aforementioned 252 HP / 212 Def / 44 SpD spread.

252 SpA Life Orb Starmie Ice Beam vs. 244 HP / 48 SpD Tangrowth: 338-400 (84 - 99.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 SpA Life Orb Starmie Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 44 SpD Tangrowth: 341-403 (84.4 - 99.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Flare Blitz vs. 244 HP / 216+ Def Tangrowth: 320-380 (79.6 - 94.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Tough Claws Mega Charizard X Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 324-384 (80.1 - 95%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

^Definitely make the above spread the main one because it's more efficient than what's currently listed.

Mention that Knock Off is particularly helpful for wearing down Heatran and forcing Clefable to use Softboiled more often. Also remove the brackets on the Hidden Power types. I also think it's worth putting Leech Seed as one of the main options, preferably making it the first option in the last slot, while placing Earthquake in moves; having recovery without having to switch out is important, especially if Rocky Helmet is being used, and in conjunction with Knock Off, it harasses things like Heatran and Mega Scizor. Each Hidden Power is more situational by comparison.

Make usage tip stating that after items have been removed early-game with Knock Off, Tangrowth can often double switch when it's brought in against a Pokemon it walls to maintain momentum and restore lost HP with Regenerator. This is pretty important for teams with Mega Venusaur. Because Leech Seed is now a main option, go into detail of situations when Leech Seed should or should not be used.

Leech Seed feels like it's just a frivolous option. I would go with HP Fire as the main slash and just mention HP Ice in Move Details instead of slashing it and make HP Fire the primary slash. I would also put a mention for Toxic as it lets Tangrowth serve as a Slowbro counter as well as whittling non-Heatran Fire-types that try to switch in.

You should expand a little bit on why to use what in the last slot. If a team is annoyed by Mega Scizor or Spikes (from Ferro), it really needs HP Fire. If a team lacks a Gliscor counter, it'll need HP Ice (Giga Drain isn't enough unless you're lucky; you get PP stalled). If your team really hates Slowbro, you can use Toxic. If you don't need any of those things, Leech Seed is probably the best bet.
