The more the name Marshadow repeats in my mind, the more I think of it as the "ambassador" of the the two boxart legends. In a sense it seems it'll be somewhat like Zygarde who has the power to actually calm / beat the boxart legends simply because it was gifted with that power.

Theorymon I think you're right on the money saying it's based off the eclipse. An eclipse happens when the moon passes over the sun, blocking out it's light for a short period of time. Honestly, it seems incredibly likely that's the case since it fits very well flavor wise.

There are actually two types of eclipses: lunar and solar. You're describing a solar eclipse.

I can actually see the third Legendary getting two formes, with each being based off of the eclipse types.

I want to go into the starters' potential viability. I think all three actually have a shot of being useful in game. Obviously these are subject to change as we learn more.

I actually see Popplio as being the worst of the three. It's water typing is always useful for the required HMs, but just doesnt seem like it will have the pop of the other two. On the other hand, with the exception of extremely poor stat distributions, water typing has always been an amazing defensive typing. Unfortunately, defense is relatively more useless in game than in competition.

As is, Litten seems like a decent fire starter. It is the first fire starter i actually like the design of (yes, I'm not actually a fan of Charmander's design. Go figure.) Fire typing is a great typing, and its form makes it seem like it will have a decent stats to abuse an offensive typing. I see it struggling a little early in game, but being the most competitively viable of the three, with amazing in game stats.

Rowlet is an interesting case. I see it amazing if it gets decent offensive stats. Flying grass might be pretty poor defensively, but it is a great offensive duo, being resisted only by Steel among pure types. This means between grass and flying STAB, it only needs extremely common fighting or ground attacks to have neutral coverage. The pokedex even mentions that it attacks by kicking, which almost assures at least Low Kick.The only issue i see is that it is round, which tends to indicate a bulky Pokemon.

I'm torn between Rowlet and Litten as my starter. Litten is my favorite of the three, but Rowlet looks to be the game's easy mode. (Fly is actually a very decent attack in game, after all.)

We have nothing to go off of to determine any sort of viability, in-game or otherwise. For all we know the region will be filled with Fire-types (because volcanoes) and make Popplio the best starter for in-game, or it will be filled with Water-types (because islands) and make Rowlet the best.

This is the most excited I've been in a long time. I'm seriously considering buying both of the games solely because holy fuck those legendaries are amazing. gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Definitely going to get Moon... the legendary looks amazing, but that might just be me since bats are my favorite species of animal.
I also love owls and I always pick the grass starter on my first play through, but the fire starter looks really cool too. I can easily see if evolving into Fire/Fighting/Dark.
Favorite part of the video was when it shows the MC run past a man standing next to a car, and the NPC turns his head to look. It looks natural like how an actual person would turn their head. It's crazy seeing something like that in a Pokemon game, it makes me realize how far this series has come since RBY.

Want a possible justification for that? Rowlet is a Grass/Flying bird. Popplio is a seal, which historically has led to a secondary Ice type. Now, which type sort of forms a type triangle with Ice and Flying, being weak to one both offensively and defensively and hitting the other super-effectively?

I actually wouldn't be surprised if Leafage turned out to be one of those moves that counts as both Grass and Flying, given that it's a exclusive starting move for a Grass/Flying-starter.

Given that Leafage is Rowlet's starting move, and mentioned in the exact same terms as Ember and Water Gun... I wouldn't hold my breath. If anything, making a dual-type move and then giving it a base power of 40 would be a bigger disappointment than a Special Vine Whip.

Never mind the argument of simplicity: Anything presented early in the game will be as simple as possible, to ease new players into the mechanics. Having the first Grass move you encounter be an exception to how Grass moves usually react, would be pretty bad design. Dual-type moves are very complex, and better suited for a much later encounter.

You know what I'm really wondering now is what the hell is up with that Gigareki trademark. Since it wasn't romanized I'm not sure its actually a Pokemon, and I heard somewhere that it translates to rubbish or rubble. That sounds like a Pokemon name tbh, but I wonder how that could work mechanically? It must have been important for Nintendo and Gamefreak to hire a lawyer to snap it up!

Still, Game Freak did Fire/Fighting in so many consecutive generations to the point that simply saying "Fire/Fighting" carries enough stigma to where no one will ever want another Fire/Fighting starter ever again. As an example, if they somehow manage to make Litten evolve into a Fire/Fighting starter (which I doubt, being based on a black cat makes it to where I can't see anything but Fire/Dark happening) I will abandon the Litten camp and pick Popplio instead.

Ah well, the Fire/Fighting jokes are probably never going to end. Same shit happened when X and Y were first announced...

I've looked more at images of the region and it has a very Wind Waker vibe, which I really like. Alola looks like it will be a wonderful region to visit.

EDIT: Also, the more I think about Rowlet, the more I love it. I'm just imagining walking around Alola with it on my shoulder, like a parrot. And the mental picture is so cute. This might be the first Pokémon to rival Gengar as my favorite, that's how much I freaking love it.

Rowlet seems like a pokemon with promise. Its final evolved form going to be placed in pu for sure though. 4x weakness to ice and stealth rock is not good

Just a 2x weakness to SR. And the typing isnt that horrible, as it still has stuff it can switch in on and scare out. It'll depend on stats, movepool, and hidden ability.

dude im honestly sorta mad bc game freak seems to have fixed a lot of my gripes about the previous games graphically - no more shitty chibi overworlds (basically approaching XD's models in a way, vastly improves overworld's looks as well as the personality of individual npc's), more colorful vibrant world (although still a bit blurry edged, which I can live with)...
