[OVERVIEW]

Smeargle's ability to learn every move in the game makes it an excellent suicide lead on offensive teams, as it's the only Pokemon that is able to learn all of Spore, Stealth Rock, and Sticky Web. Its decent Speed tier allows it to effectively get up multiple hazards versus slower Pokemon, and it is one of the few viable Sticky Web users in the tier. However, Smeargle can be played around fairly easily and is shut down by Taunt, Lum Berry Pokemon, and Xatu for the most part. Smeargle also becomes setup fodder for any Pokemon that doesn't care about Nuzzle, such as Rhydon, Torterra, or Golurk, after Sleep Clause is activated. It is also pressured by Rapid Spin and Defog users like Hitmonchan, Skuntank, and Claydol, as they can get rid of all hazards Smeargle sets up; Rapid Spin users do this most effectively due to their ability to KO Smeargle with Rapid Spin once it's brought down to its Focus Sash. Furthermore, when running Dark Void, Smeargle may fail to do its job of setting up hazards if Dark Void misses.

Moves
=======

Sticky Web lowers the Speed of all opposing grounded Pokemon so your team gains the Speed advantage over the opponent's. Stealth Rock allows Smeargle to wear down Pokemon on the switch in, as well as breaking Sturdy and Focus Sash. Smeargle running Stealth Rock also frees up an extra slot for teammates like Mesprit and Rhydon. Spore and Dark Void provide Smeargle free turns to set up hazards, which it struggles to do otherwise due to its low bulk. Spore is generally more useful, as it has perfect accuracy, but Dark Void allows Smeargle to put Grass-types to sleep at the cost of having a chance to miss. Skill Swap is used to take away Xatu's Magic Bounce ability so that Smeargle can set up hazards on it instead of them getting bounced back to your side of the field. It can also be utilized as an emergency check to Malamar and a way to prevent Lanturn from using Volt Switch on Smeargle while regaining health. Nuzzle allows Smeargle to paralyze faster Taunt Pokemon such as Floatzel and Archeops, which normally completely shut it down. It also makes Smeargle able to paralyze Xatu through Magic Bounce, which is why it's preferred over Thunder Wave. Smeargle can also run Explosion in the last slot with maximum Attack investment, as it prevents foes from using Defog or Rapid Spin, as well as being a decently strong move in general.

Set Details
=======

Maximum Speed investment and a Timid nature make Smeargle outpace Xatu, Samurott, Adamant Shiftry, and Adamant Hitmonchan, allowing it to either Spore them or put up multiple layers of hazards. The Speed also makes it so Smeargle can Skill Swap Xatu and lay up hazards on the next turn so it can get up at least one layer of hazards in a one-on-one situation. Smeargle doesn't get any useful abilities for its supposed role, and Own Tempo is the only ability that may come in handy sometimes, as it can help versus random Hurricane confusions or Confuse Ray users. An EV spread of 80 HP / 96 Def / 80 SpD maximizes Smeargle's bulk while maintaining maximum Speed. This is useful for taking weaker hits like multiple Rock Blasts from Rhydon, as well as avoiding the 2HKO from common defensive Pokemon such as Lanturn, Mantine, and Mega Audino.

Usage Tips
=======

Smeargle should always be used as a suicide lead on offensive teams and is almost never worth preserving for later in the match. Against most teams, going for Spore / Dark Void, Sticky Web, and Stealth Rock in that specific order is the best series of plays. Sticky Web should always be prioritized when facing more offensive teams, and Stealth Rock versus more defensive ones. Exceptions for this are if the opposing team has multiple Stealth Rock-weak Pokemon like Scyther and Charizard and doesn't care much about Sticky Web. This is especially important if the opponent has poor or no hazard removal. Be wary when setting up Sticky Web versus teams with Pokemon that can take advantage of it such as Malamar and Pawniard, as it boosts their Speed and Attack, respectively. Faster Taunt users like Archeops and Floatzel completely shut down Smeargle aside from Nuzzle, which is something to keep in mind. Setup Pokemon that don't mind Nuzzle from Smeargle such as Rhydon, Torterra, and Golurk can set up for free after Sleep Clause is activated. Lastly, opposing Rapid Spin and Defog users should be kept under high pressure throughout the entire game, and as few opportunities for Defog should be given as possible. Hazard removal can be prevented with Taunt users and spinblockers, such as Mismagius, Rotom, and Skuntank.
Team Options
=======

Spinblockers like Rotom and Mismagius are great partners for Smeargle, as they prevents foes from using Rapid Spin to get rid of any entry hazards Smeargle has managed to put up on the field. Slower setup sweepers that benefit from Sticky Web, such as Samurott and Shiftry, are good partners for Smeargle because they are far more threatening when they get the Speed advantage on their offensive checks. Slower wallbreakers like Aurorus, Aggron, and Magmortar heavily appreciate the Sticky Web support that Smeargle provides, as it allows them to outpace a majority of offensive checks that would normally be able to outspeed and KO them. Lastly, Pokemon that either can prevent Defog via Taunt or are able to pressure common Defog users like Shiftry, Mantine, and Skuntank are great partners for Smeargle, as they allow the hazards that it has set up to be on the opposing side of the field for as long as possible, if not for the entirety of the match. Good examples include Tauros and Archeops.

Other Options
=======

U-turn can be used over either Skill Swap or Nuzzle to gain momentum and safely switch out versus Taunt users like Floatzel and Mismagius and into a teammate that can handle said Pokemon. Magic Coat can be used to ensure at least one layer of hazards versus Taunt users. Memento can be picked over Skill Swap or Nuzzle, as it prevents the foe from using Rapid Spin or Defog on the same turn, as well as providing a free switch to something that can threaten the Pokemon currently on the field. It also allows for easier setup opportunities for Pokemon like Shell Smash Barbaracle and Swords Dance Samurott.

Smeargle can also pull off a level 1 Trick Room + Endeavor set with decent success, but it is stopped easily by any priority attack and is pretty easy to deal with, especially considering there are much better Trick Room users than Smeargle.

Checks and Counters
=======
**Fast Taunt Users**: Faster Taunt users like Archeops, Mismagius, and Floatzel usually prevent Smeargle from getting up any entry hazards, although they have to be wary of getting crippled by Nuzzle.

**Xatu**: Xatu's ability Magic Bounce allows it to bounce back any hazards Smeargle tries to set up, as well as Spore and Dark Void, completely ruining Smeargle's chances to do anything. While Skill Swap is exclusively used for Xatu, not all Smeargle run it, and the Smeargle user still has to predict correctly in order to be able to get up hazards.

**Kangaskhan**: Kangaskhan can outspeed Smeargle and KO it with the combination of Fake Out and Return, breaking through its Focus Sash.

**Sleep Absorbers**: Sleep absorbers such as Magmortar, Sliggoo, and Malamar, Grass-type Pokemon, and Lum Berry Pokemon can all avoid getting hit by Spore and prevent Smeargle from setting up multiple layers of hazards.

**Sleep Inducers**: Sleep inducers such as Lilligant, Jynx, and Vivillon can put Smeargle to sleep, limiting the number of hazards it can set up depending on the number of sleep turns.

polished up everything quite a bit and rewritten a whole bunch. Ready for QC now!

also, since Smeargle gets such an insane movepool, what to do with OO? I think Belly Drum pass is too gimmicky to effectively pull of so I didn't mention it. Opinions?

Set Details:
  • Mention the fact that Jolly Smeargle outspeeds defensive Xatu, and therefore it can set up a layer of hazards after using Skill Swap
  • You could also mention that Smeargle can put Adamant Hitmonchan to sleep with Spore / Dark Void before it gets the chance to use Rapid Spin.
  • Give a one line mention of Own Tempo being the only relevant ability for Smeargle as it can help against random Hurricane confusions.
Usage Tips:
  • Note that against Offensive teams you'd prioritize setting up Webs, whereas against more defensive builds you'd try and get up Stealth Rock first.
Team Options:
  • Add in Wallbreakers such as Aggron, Aurorus, Magmortar, and Choice Band Hariyama since they love Sticky Webs, and can pressure Defoggers.
Other Options:
  • I personally agree in leaving out Belly Drum Pass because it's really gimmicky, and pretty easy to stop.
  • I'd give Memento a mention as well since it functions similarly to Explosion, except you're giving your team a chance to set up and pressure the opposing team even more.
  • Give the Trick Room set a mention here since Smeargle is one of the better users of the move
Checks & Counters:
  • I'd make a new heading called "Sleep Absorbers" and combine Lum Berry users along with Pokemon that are immune to Sleep, including Vital Spirit users such as Magmortar and Primeape, Sap Sipper Pokemon such as Sliggoo and Miltank, Grass-type Pokemon that can absorb Spore (mention that Dark Void can get around their immunity), and RestTalk users such as Malamar, and Mega Audino
  • Add another section for Sleep Inducers such as Jynx, Lilligant, and Vivillon, as these Pokemon are all common leads that can prevent Smeargle from doing anything, and proceed to set up.

Nice Work :)

The overview should probably talk a little bit about how Sticky Web teams work as Smeargle is by far the best user of the move around and you won't see many teams without it. You should also emphasise that it's setup fodder for anything that doesn't mind a Nuzzle once Sleep Clause is in place, such as Rock Polish Rhydon, Torterra, Golurk, etc, and it's setup fodder for most other things if it runs Skill Swap. Also mention that Smeargle can be offensively pressured by all Rapid Spin / Defog users once Sleep Clause is activated, making it difficult to keep hazards up unless it sets them at the right time and has good team support.

In moves you could also mention some other niche uses for Skill Swap if you want, such as emergency-checking Malamar or preventing a Lanturn from pivoting out with Volt Switch; Xatu is definitely the reason it's used but there are other cases where it's handy.

The EVs could also be different; 252 HP EVs is inefficient on a mon with such low base defenses. Something like 28 HP / 92 Def / 136 SpD has the same physical bulk but roughly 5% more special bulk; this lets Smeargle avoid the 2HKO from mons like defensive Lanturn, Mantine, Pelipper, and Mega Audino. I know this isn't hugely helpful in a 1v1 matchup against Defog users but Smeargle's defense is only really useful against priority attacks (and Smeargle can already take Fake Out + Bullet Punch from Hariyama without more Def investment). I'll talk to QC about the spread and let you know what we decide on.

In usage tips you should also mention specific examples of when Spore / Webs / Rocks isn't the optimal move order. For example, I've seen teams where the only grounded mons are super slow or where they run something like Charizard/Scyther with weak/no hazard control; SR should definitely be the priority here. You should also avoid Sleep when the foe has a mon that can just completely set up on Smeargle after Sleep Clause activates, such as Rhydon etc. If it's super obvious the foe is going to lead Magmortar or something to counterplay lead Smeargle, you should also just lead with a different mon most of the time and bring Smeargle in when it's safe.

Implement ~Eternally's stuff too and it's QC 1/3. Lv1 Trick Room is fun but definitely only OO material.

  • I'd go with the spread you and erisia came up with, since specific scenarios can happen, and there's no real harm in using it.
Usage Tips:
  • Servine isnt relevant or ranked so scrap any mentions of it.
  • Add in Ground-types in the point about DDon setting up, as it applies to all of them.
Checks and Counters:
  • Mention that those fast taunters hate being crippled by nuzzle.
QC 2/3 Awesome work, write this up

EV spread should be written as 80 HP / 96 Def / 80 SpD / 252 Spe. Me and Shadestep discussed this spread and it has the same special bulk as 252 HP / 4 Def but about 5% more physical bulk; we thought it was more useful to take priority attacks better in general than one or two very specific scenarios. Let us know if you'd rather just go with the standard spread or something different.

[OVERVIEW]

Smeargle's ability to learn pretty much every available move in the game via Sketch, makes it an excellent suicide lead on hyper offensive teams. this is kind of an awkward way to explain why smeargle is a good suicide lead, i'd rephrase it to explain what specific moves aid in setting up hazards Its decent speed-tier allows it to effectively get up multiple hazards versus slower Pokemon. Smeargle is one of the few viable Sticky Web users in the tier. However, Smeargle can be played around fairly easily and is shut down by Taunt, Lum Berry Pokemon, and Xatu for the most part, as well as other things such as Multi-hit moves like Rock Blast or Icicle Spear. i wouldn't bother mentioning multi-hit moves bc pretty much none of them outspeed smeargle Smeargle also becomes set-up fodder for any Pokemon that doesn't care about Nuzzle, like Rhydon, Torterra, and Golurk, after Sleep Clause is activated. It is also pressured by Rapid Spin and Defog users like Hitmonchan, Skuntank and Claydol as they can get rid of all hazards Smeargle lays up; Rapid Spin users do this most effectively due to their ability to KO Smeargle with Rapid Spin once it's brought down to its Focus Sash. When running Dark Void, Smeargle may fail to do its job of setting up hazards if Dark Void misses.

Sticky Web is Smeargle's main selling point, lowering all opposing grounded Pokemons speed, allowing your team to gain a speed advantage over the opponent. Stealth Rock allows Smeargle to severly weaken Pokemon on the switch in, as well as breaking Sturdy and Focus Sash. mention that sr also frees up a slot on teammates like rhydon and mesprit. also change 'severely weaken' to just 'wear away' or something bc the former's kind of overexaggerating Spore and Dark Void allow Smeargle free turns to set up hazards which it struggles to do otherwise, due to its low bulk. Spore is generally more useful as it has perfect accuracy, but Dark Void allows Smeargle to put Grass-types and occasional Safety Goggles and Overcoat users to sleep, at the cost of having a chance to miss. Skill Swap is used to take away Xatu's Magic Bounce ability, so that Smeargle can set up hazards on it instead of them getting bounced back to the users side of the field. It can also be utilized as an emergency check to Malamar, and a way to prevent Lanturn from using Volt Switch on Smeargle while regaining health. Nuzzle allows Smeargle to paralyze faster Taunt pokemon such as Floatzel and Archeops, who normally completely shut it down. It also makes Smeargle able to paralyze Xatu through Magic Bounce, which is why it's preferred over Thunder Wave.

also i would mention max atk jolly explosion here instead of oo. it prevents opponents from spinning / defogging and prevents smeargle from being set up on, as well as decently strong in general and can break p much any substitute.

[OVERVIEW]

Smeargle's ability to learn every move available in the game, (RC) makes it an excellent suicide lead on offensive teams, (AC) as it's one of the few Pokemon that is able to learn all of Spore, Stealth Rock, (AC) and Sticky Web, making it unique in that way. Its decent Speed tier allows it to effectively get up multiple hazards versus slower Pokemon. Smeargle, and it is one of the few viable Sticky Web users in the tier. However, Smeargle can be played around fairly easily and is shut down by Taunt, Lum Berry Pokemon, and Xatu for the most part. Smeargle also becomes setup fodder for any Pokemon that doesn't care about Nuzzle, like Rhydon, Torterra, and Golurk, after Sleep Clause is activated. It is also pressured by Rapid Spin and Defog users like Hitmonchan, Skuntank, (AC) and Claydol, (AC) as they can get rid of all hazards Smeargle lays sets up; Rapid Spin users do this most effectively due to their ability to KO Smeargle with Rapid Spin once it's brought down to its Focus Sash. Furthermore, when running Dark Void, Smeargle may fail to do its job of setting up hazards if Dark Void misses.

Sticky Web is Smeargle's main selling point, lowering the Speed of all opposing grounded Pokemons speed, allowing so your team to gains the Speed advantage over the opponent. Stealth Rock allows Smeargle to wear down Pokemon on the switch in, as well as breaking Sturdy and Focus Sash. Smeargle running Stealth Rock also frees up an extra slot for teammates like Mesprit and Rhydon. Spore and Dark Void allow provide Smeargle free turns to set up hazards, (AC) which it struggles to do otherwise, due to its low bulk. Spore is generally more useful, (AC) as it has perfect accuracy, but Dark Void allows Smeargle to put Grass-types and occasional Safety Goggles and Overcoat users to sleep, at the cost of having a chance to miss. Skill Swap is used to take away Xatu's Magic Bounce ability, (RC) so that Smeargle can set up hazards on it instead of them getting bounced back to the user's side of the field. It can also be utilized as an emergency check to Malamar, and a way to prevent Lanturn from using Volt Switch on Smeargle while regaining health. Nuzzle allows Smeargle to paralyze faster Taunt Pokemon such as Floatzel and Archeops, who which normally completely shut it down. It also makes Smeargle able to paralyze Xatu through Magic Bounce, which is why it's preferred over Thunder Wave. Smeargle can also run Explosion in the last slot with maximum Attack investment, as it prevents opponents from using Defog or Rapid Spin, as well as being a decently strong move in general.

Set Details
=======

Maximum Speed and a Timid nature makes Smeargle to outpace Xatu, Samurott, (AC) and Adamant Shiftry, and Adamant + Hitmonchan, allowing it to either Spore them or put up multiple layers of hazards. The Speed also makes it so Smeargle can Skill Swap Xatu and lay up hazards on the next turn, so it can get up at least 1 one layer of hazards in a 1v1 situation. Smeargle doesn't get any useful abilities for its supposed role, and Own Tempo is the only ability that may come in handy sometimes, as it can help versus random Hurricane confusions or infamous Confuse Ray users.

Usage Tips
=======

Smeargle should always be used as a suicide lead on offensive teams and is almost never worth preserving for later in the match. Against most teams, going for Spore / Dark Void, Sticky Web, and Stealth Rock in that specific order is the best series of plays. Sticky Web should always be prioritized when facing more offensive teams;, (AC) and Stealth Rock versus more defensive ones. Exceptions for this are if the opposing team has multiple Stealth Rock-weak Pokemon like Scyther and Charizard, (RC) but are affected by Sticky Web to lesser effect (what does this last bit mean?). This is especially important if the opponent has poor or no hazard removal. Be wary when setting up Sticky Web versus teams with Pokemon that can take advantage of it Sticky Web abusers such as Malamar and Pawniard; they both benefit from Sticky Web, (AC) as it boosts their Speed and Attack, respectively. Faster Taunt users like Archeops and Floatzel completely shut down Smeargle aside from Nuzzle, which is something to keep in mind. Setup Pokemon that don't mind Nuzzle from Smeargle such as Rhydon, Torterra, (AC) and Golurk can set up for free after Sleep Clause is activated. Lastly, opposing Rapid Spin and Defog users should be kept under high pressure throughout the entire game, and as few opportunities for Defog should be given as possible. Hazard removal can be prevented with Taunt users and spinblockers, obviously. (seems kinda informal lol)

Team Options
=======

Spinblockers like Rotom and Mismagius are great partners for Smeargle, (AC) as they prevent opponents from using Rapid Spin to get rid of any entry hazards Smeargle has managed to put up on the field. Slower setup sweepers that benefit from Sticky Web, such as Samurott and Shiftry, are good partners for Smeargle because as they are way more threatening when they get the Speed advantage on their offensive checks. Slower wallbreakers like Aurorus, Aggron, and Magmortar heavily appreciate the Sticky Web support that Smeargle provides, as it allows them to outpace a majority of offensive checks that would normally be able to outspeed and KO them said wallbreakers. Lastly, Pokemon that can either can prevent Defog via Taunt, (RC) or are able to pressure common Defog users like Shiftry, Mantine, (AC) and Skuntank are great partners for Smeargle, (AC) too as they allow the hazards that is it has set up to be on the opposing field for as long as possible, if not for the entirety of the match. Good examples are Tauros and Archeops.

Other Options
=======

U-turn can be used over either Skill Swap or Nuzzle to gain momentum and safely switch U-turn out versus Taunt users like Floatzel or and Mismagius, allowing Smeargle to safely switch and into a teammate that can handle said Pokemon. Magic Coat can be used to ensure at least 1 one layer of hazards versus Taunt users. Memento can be picked over Skill Swap / or Nuzzle, (AC) as it prevents the opponent from using Rapid Spin or Defog on the same turn, as well as providing a free switch-in to something that can threaten the Pokemon currently on the field. It also allows for easier setup opportunities for Pokemon like Shell Smash Barbaracle and Swords Dance Samurott.

Smeargle can also pull off a Lvl level 1 Trick Room + Endeavor set with decent success, however but it is stopped easily by any priority attack and is pretty easy to deal with, especially considering there are way better Trick Room users than Smeargle.

Checks and Counters
=======
**Fast Taunters**: Faster Taunt users like Archeops, Mismagius, and or Floatzel usually prevent Smeargle from getting up any hazards, although they have to be wary of getting crippled by Nuzzle. (AP)

**Xatu**: Xatu's ability Magic Bounce effectively allows it to bounce back any hazards Smeargle tries to lay set up, as well as while also bouncing back Spore and Dark Void, completely ruining Smeargle's chances to do anything. While Skill Swap is exclusively used for Xatu, not all Smeargle run it, and the Smeargle user still has to predict correctly in order to be able to get up hazards. (AP)

**Kangaskhan**: Kangaskhan can outspeed and faint Smeargle and KO it with the combination of Fake Out + and Return if Jolly, KOing it before it has a chance to do anything back, breaking through its Focus Sash. (this was approved by boltsandbombers)

**Sleep Absorbers**: Sleep absorbers such as Magmortar, Sliggoo, (AC) and Malamar, Grass-type Pokemon, and Lum Berry Pokemon can all avoid getting Spored and prevent Smeargle from laying setting up multiple layers of hazards. (AP)

**Sleep Inducers**: Sleep inducers such as Lilligant, Jynx, and Vivillon can put Smeargle to sleep, limiting it to 1 one layer of hazards, depending on the number amount of sleep turns. Two small fixes I'd like to see made before I upload this:

"as it's the only viable Pokemon that is able to learn all of Spore, Stealth Rock, and Sticky Web."

Remove viable here because Smeargle is literally the only Pokemon that learns all three of the moves mentioned, saying its the only viable Pokemon that does it implies that there is an unviable Pokemon which can learn the moves.

"but Dark Void allows Smeargle to put Grass-types and occasional Safety Goggles and Overcoat users to sleep at the cost of having a chance to miss."

At the very least according to dex analyses, nothing runs Safety Goggles outside of random counterteams and the only Pokemon that is remotely viable in NU with Overcoat is Vullaby and that hardly sees any usage; as such I'd like the bolded portion removed.
