This is actually quite intimidating... I have never had a match this serious before, and I'm a little caught off-guard..

...

You all don't speak, do you? Yet you're eager and impatient to get into the fight, just like my own piplup... very well.

Alright, so. Some brief comments before I order:
- I know you already knew this, but this is where you'd equip an item. You'd be surprised at how often people forget to equip >_<

*Btw, don't read too much into that battle. It got really REALLY stupid really fast
- I'm sure you'll hear this again, and you'll hear it a lot (because Frosty repeats it ad nauseaum), but matchups are what makes you or breaks you in singles. Frosty likes to say "bread and butter", but I'm not a fan of that expression. Speaking of Frosty, you should read the fourth paragraph and the final paragraph of jay's analysis from that link. Go on. I'll wait.
Back with me? Nice. Anyways, so so much about singles revolves around the ability to force the matchups you want and hammering the opponent when you do have a favorable matchup, while dancing around bad matchups and minimizing the damage when needed. Keep that in mind when you go thru my orders.
- In any case, this is just a long way of saying that I really really like your choice to lead with Empoleon. It's the mon with the least unfavorable bad matchup (in this case, it can handle Mawile and would heavily cripple if not outright KO Infernape, while having a manageable matchup with Necturna), which suggests that you already analyzed which 1v1s are favorable for you, and which mon you want fighting each of mine.

"Some fresh faces, huh? About time! You look like you know what you're doing"

"I sense powerful spirits around you. Be careful, lest the spirit world prove to be more than you can handle."

Sending out Tiger Lillian the Necturna @ Amulet Coin!
Super Fang - Power Whip - Power Whip

[IF] Whirlpool is used [AND] Empoleon is not behind a substitute [AND] is not under the effects of Infestation, use Infestation that action instead and push actions back
[IF] a D/E move is used [AND] not suspended [AND] not in a combination [AND] Empoleon would move first based on speed order, use Shadow Sneak that action instead and push actions back

I knew that this was the likely match-up, yet that doesn't help me swallow how poorly it is... Regardless, I will have faith in your abilities, new friend. Let us try and see what we can do against this science experiment.

...

Protect | Roar | Protect

That's a great way of getting out of a less-than-favorable matchup and forcing a much better one. Honestly, that's probably the best order set you could do--I mean, you could've tried to go for the straight damage race (which you lose, btw) and switch afterwards, but that just leaves you with a crippled Empoleon and no way of handling Mawile later on in the match.

Also, I guess you've probably heard by now of what we call the chicken dance, so I won't go into much further detail. Just kudos on recognizing that I had no way of subbing for all of P/E, Roar and trapping moves with only two subs and exploiting that fact.

Finally, two things that I realized while reffing: - Agility and Teleport can be used for their regular, in-game uses as well as for evasive purposes. In cases like this, where you're avoiding single-target moves, using Agility (evasive) is more energy-efficient than using Protect. Just be aware that it doesn't work against spread moves like Earthquake or perfect accuracy moves like Aerial Ace
- Remember how you should always pay attention to ASB-specific effects of moves and abilities? Well, guess who's an idiot and forgot about Forewarn's super useful, ASB-exclusive effect. In ASB, Forewarn is far from its useless ingame self, since it actually grants the user a bonus substitution (which in this case I should've used on Roar =_=).

This is much more favorable! Still, it would be wise to stay sharp friend. I believe now is the time to deal as much damage as we can.

Hydro Pump | Surf | Hydro Pump
[If Infernape is underground when you would attack, change your action to using Earthquake at that time instead. Push back the action sequence.]
[If Infernape uses a damaging fighting type move that is not in a combination, use the move Agility (Evasive) the first instance and the third.]

Alright, some things before I get into the particulars.

I believe now is the time to deal as much damage as we can.
Yeah, that's pretty much what you need to do in this situation. Basically, you need to force the matchups you want and hammer me when you have them. Which brings me to my point: that second sub is kinda unnecessary. "IF x move is used, use P/E move" subs are fine if you can spare them AND if you're trying desperately to avoid damage. In this case, I'm the one who should be avoiding damage, not you. Even in the worst of cases, my strongest move (Close Combat/Focus Blast) is narrowly outdamaged by your own Hydro Pump. In any case, you'd be better off subbing for my own P/E moves. Remember the chicken dance we talked about? Something along the lines of "[IF] a P/E move is used, use Stealth Rock on the first instance, Chill on the second. Do not trigger consecutively" punishes me for trying to avoid damage, and it helps guarantee that you will get a good shot at Infernape.

Speaking of taking your good matchups and running with them: it's always a good idea to try and mess with the opponent's methods of matchup control. I know this is kinda impossible in this situation because Infernape has like four different methods of matchup control, but something like "[IF] U-turn is used [AND] U-turn is not used on the following action, use Protect that action instead and restart queue" can help with that problem. You can also try to work trapping moves such as Whirlpool into your orders like I did on the previous round, even if trapping moves are usually more situational. (Which reminds me: great use of your first substitution. Damaging evasives are easy ways to get around bad matchups and you took that one away perfectly)

Finally, and most important of all: Encore. So you know how I mentioned Infernape's tricks on irc? In this category we have stuff like Taunt, Torment, Fake Out, Bide, Imprison, etc. The thing that makes Encore so very deadly is that it will lock you into otherwise useless stuff and make you bang your head against a cheese grater for a round. In this particular case, since you used Protect last action, there wasn't too much you could do to play around it. Your best bet would probably have been to sub for "[IF] Encore is used A1, use Aqua Jet + Waterfall A1", since Encore won't affect you if your last move was a combo. Yes, this forces you to cool down A2, but it's much better than to be forced to Protect A1 and A2. Alternatively, you could've gone with [IF] Encore A1, use Aqua Jet A1. This locks you into Aqua Jet A2 and A3, but it leaves you open to either Counter or Torment. Long story short, all the moves mentioned above are deadly and you should def watch out for them.

"Not bad at all. I believe now is the time to avoid as much damage as we can!"

Remember matchup control? In literally any other situation, I would've trapped you with Fire Spin A3 and then switched to Necturna so I could continue to hack at you without the need to worry about counterswitching. However, since this is supposed to be a teaching moment and we've already gone thru that situation, I wanna see what you do when confronted with a choice.

Sending out Tiger Lillian the Necturna!

Care to counterswitch?

...I will do better. I am sorry, friend. I think it is best if you take a rest for the moment.

...

And now, to try out another new friend. You seem to be the best choice for this unwelcomed scenario. Are you ready to play catch-up?

...Hpmh.

Well, they did say you were haughty...

Foul Play | Knock Off | Foul Play
[If Mandibuzz is soaked when it would attack, and Necturna is not ordered to use a damaging grass combination a3, use the move Whirlwind the first instance, the move Protect the second instance, and the move Foul Play the third instance.]
[If Necturna uses Protect use the move Tail Wind the first instance, the move Substitute (20HP) the second instance, and Roost the third instance.]

Sorry YellowAdminSilver but a month is too much. You can consider yourself DQ'd from the mentorship. Please handle prizes here at your earliest occasion.

Willow Wisps I will be your tutor. Please PM me stating what you have done thus far and we will move from there.

He just PM'd me asking for a submentor and just posted on the main thread. I am assuming not until now, YAS.

Not trying to clog this thread, but I sincerely apologize about this. I thought Willow had subbed me out by now, and life has been coming at me fast this past month, as you can tell by my several LoAs. For whatever it's worth, Willow Wisps , you can come to me for advice any time and I'd honestly relish the opportunity to help.

Some final pointers, if I may: I was just trying to test you on whether you'd counterswitch, having a pretty much perfect Necturna counter in the back. You aced that test simply by doing the smart thing and switching; a lot of new people would be too scared to accept the switch. Your subs cover all your bases from what I saw; kudos especially on the P/E sub since that lets you press the advantage. Your second sub is what made me realize that perhaps Soak Necty was a bit over the top, I should've used something else or brought it without the Sketch move. Sorry again I'm dum ._.

If this battle is cancelled, I'll post rewards in a sec.

I agree with YAS's general assessment above. Except for the soak sub. The sub is needed yeah. The moves you used aren't enough though. Although to be fair, you didn't have much to work with.

Perhaps.. we should do this?

Hmmph.

Defog | Bone Rush | Bone Rush
[If Mega Mawile uses the move Thunderpunch, and it is not in a combination, and you are faster than it, use the move Fly that action. Push back the action queue.]
[If Mega Mawile uses the move Counter, use the move Roost on the first instance, Substitute 20 the second instance, and Heat Wave on the third instance. Push back the action queue.]
[If Mega Mawile uses the move Taunt, and you are faster than it, use the move Taunt that action. Push back the action queue.]

Bone Rush's damage ranges from 2.5 to 16, with the average being 7.75hp
Foul Play's damage is 10.38hp

To put it in perspective, my Stealth Rock will deal a minimum of 21hp of damage to you. Probably more.

In other words: I highly suggest you include Defog on your main orders somewhere. Normally the action-set you gave is the standard: leave no quarter for setting up and only do set-up of your own when the opponent gives you the space to do so. Orders on singles usually go that way. But when your damage output is that low and you have a move you really need to get in, putting it in the main orders is more worth it.

Lemme know if you are keeping those orders

Willow Wisps

There was a mistake on my behalf. Since this is Items=training, Mawilite is not a viable item. Yes I know the official rules state "1 mega evolution". But this is no dual-wield match (I hate those on principle), so no mawilite.

Mawile will instead hold nothing. Does that change your orders?

You can't let hope die out. You have to keep searching for an option, no matter how bleak the outcome seems. It took me longer than it should have, but I think I found some hope.

(Also, Frosty, I believe Mandibuzz should have +2 Speed from Weak Armor)

Are you sure it is wise to keep mandibuzz in? Both empoleon and Trevenant are much better in this situation and you can at least try to sneak in a flying move vs infernape or necturna. Switching is for free. And if I switch in like Necturna to your Empoleon, you would at least get first-orders.

Unless you want to sac. But if you sac, you won't win the matchups.
