recently got more into anime since i dont really want to do school work lol (i.e. watching 12 hours / all 24 episodes of Ace Attorney last week X_X)

might as well talk a bit while putting off a paper lol

Ace Attorney: I love pw sm i've played all the games released in us (except spirit of justice :[) but it's produced p poorly i mean the spectators in the court scenes dont even look human at all lmao.

New Game: this is absolute fire omg hifumi <33333

Occultic;Nine either seems like it has a shot of being good, but it more seems like it will flop early on and have a poor run overall.

3-Gatsu no Lion is so shaft it hurts, but in a good way. It has this look of YLIA x Monogatari with the feels of the former and the visual style of the latter. I'm expecting this to be aots if Yuri on Ice falls through.

also euphonium 2 man, its good to have kumiko, my wife back on my screen
It was a nice surprise that the first episode was almost 50 mins!

I also like how they start off on a bit of a dark note, makes it feel more like a real season two (don't ask me what that means).

doing my yearly OP ranking list. it was pretty hard this time honestly, had a huge shortlist http://pastebin.com/JG58cx85 (with webms)! but instead of making a video this time, imma just make a post. webms will be hyperlinked

---

Starting seasonally, #10 is 3-gatsu no Lion

I really cant help this one, I'm a huge bump of chicken fan and it is literally only making it on the list for that reason. It's still super good visually though. You can usually expect quality OPs out of Shaft.

#9 is the Second OP to Ace Attorney

Now, visually this op isn't great because lol ace attorney anime. But holy goddamn this is an earworm, out of all the songs on the list this is the one you will catch me humming the most.

#8 is Tanaka-Kun is Always Listless

This is an excellent showcase of a song totally matching the shows atmosphere. Its chilled out, relaxing and peaceful. Just like the show itself, which is one of my favourites of the entire year.

#7 is Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu

BLOOD TOTEM

#6 is 91 Days

this is just a fucking epic OP, it starts off quiet and hushed and then has this moment of emotional overflow that you can really feel. It sounds like absolute desperation, which is extremely fitting for the show.

#5 is Sakamoto Desu Ga?

What a bundle of energy. It honestly is just badass, showing sakamoto doing his thing while music belts out praising him. The song is just super good too, on its own.

#4 is Dimension W

Another really fun one, this one is up here mostly for how well the song and visuals go together. The scene where the MC is shuffling is probably my favourite moment in any OP this year.

#3 is Kiznaiver

You just have to look at it to know why its so high. LOOK AT IT.

#2 is Jojo's Bizarre Adventures: Diamond is Unbreakable OP 1

Had a lot of time trying to decide whether this would be #1 or not, but ultimately I decided its not QUITE there. This OP is still absolutely amazing though, the song, the visuals. Everything is in place. The fact that it stepped away from the heavy rock of the previous Jojo OPs was super ballsy, and it fit the tonal shift. The EDM version is a better song but the OG matches the visuals better so I linked that.

#1 is Mob Psycho 100

This is literally perfection in an OP. The visuals are crazy creative, the song is absolutely fucking bonkers, and it matches the tone of the show perfectly. Literally everything I look for in an OP, this is maybe one of my favourites of all time. Its that damn good.

hibike s2 not on the list? or just too recent to qualify

I liked the first OP a lot and the second is all-around better IMO, and it's the same singer and everything

I've not seen any shows from Friday onwards yet (about to binge through Friday's and yesterday's shows) but so far my favorite OPs from this season are Flip Flappers, Hibike and Yuri on Ice.

Yuri has some really nice visuals but it's let down somewhat by the music which is above average at best. I thought it was pretty but it didn't really do a good job of either grabbing me or telling me what what the show was about other than that it was about ice skating.

Hibike has by far the best music out of any this season and the animation to go with it is completely amazing to watch. Everything about Hibike is just so pretty and this is definitely the superior of DREAM SOLISTER. Honestly Hibike's whole soundtrack is incredible and when it finishes I'm probably gonna buy the full OST 'cause I fucking love it.

Flip Flappers' does a really good job of grabbing me; it doesn't have as good music as Hibike does, but the song is still really good regardless and the visuals do an absolutely spectacular job of showing off the aesthetic of the show; it doesn't really do anything particularly new with the opening, but the choreography is really well handled and is well suited to the art style and it does a really incredible job of showing off how well said art style manages light scenes, dark scenes and everything in between while also giving us a glimpse into the personalities of every character in the cast. It has a slight case of "lets make all our characters look depressed" syndrome, although unlike SAO OP1 this one actually makes the MC and deuteragonist get over their depressed looks from earlier in the OP by the end and even implies that they weren't really depressed just from how Papika lifts her face it's position smiling. Alternatively, this could also just be that she is trying to hide her pain of whatever it is that she has to do from Kokona; I think this is likely because while you get a pathetic fallacy shift (rain-->sun) when Papika lifts her head and the camera then snaps onto Kokona, showing that she is the catalyst for the face lift and the source of the shift of the light, but if you look at Papika's face you notice that streaming down it are what could be either tears or rain--implying that she was using the rain from earlier to hide her tears, but also suggesting that she finds solace in Kokona's presence that she doesn't want to ruin with her own sorrow (further justifying the pathetic fallacy shift). From an interpretation standpoint Flip Flappers is definitely the strongest, and I think I'd probably be able to identify which interpretations I've made on different parts of the OP are correct by the end of the series. This is the current strongest one for me.

Girlish Number was pretty good, like if Shirobako was about seiyuu instead of anime and was written by a massively bitter cynic (which makes sense seeing as it's the Yahari/SNAFU writer)

March comes in like a lion/3gatsu no lion was disappointing though. Tonal jumps aside it was...idk, too lacking subtlety and even a little pretentious? something about the background song being in French bugs me

Occultits;Notes was pretty weak too though I wasn't expecting much from it in the first place after Robotics;Notes

Flip Flappers is the show to watch this season. It's directed by the director of one of the best Space Dandy episodes (the fish one), it looks like it was made by Late Gainax if they had a lovechild with Ghibli. It has some really awesome animation and very minimal dialogue, the tone is unsettling and strange despite being full of charm. the soundtrack is amazing

fuck dude
ep 2 was even better

keijo is another one of those shows that is incredibly stupid and is aware of that, but also treats itself extremely seriously which creates this hilarious dissonance between the atmosphere of the show and its actual content

plus I can bring it up whenever someone tries to argue that the fanservice in kill la kill isn't actual fanservice because it's important to the plot, so that's a huge plus

i also finished both seasons of K-On yesterday and had a great time (<-- points at new avatar). it was a pleasant ride up until episode 20 of season 2, which hit me like a ton of bricks toward the end. it felt eerily similar to my first time watching Shirobako 23, where you're sort of caught off-guard by how much you realize you care about these characters. going to watch the movie sometime in the next week probably, but am probably going to get through some other stuff too. probably starting Hourou Musuko next.

You can expect an absolutely humungous post where I talk about every single pilot at some point in the next two weeks when I finally get around to finishing them all, but I want to talk about a show which has potential to either completely blow 91 Days out of the water for the AotY position or be a complete volatile flop (the former is more likely than the latter tbh) depending on how they manage the next few episodes. In case you can't tell from my avatar+CT, that show is Flip Flappers.

Now, in terms of its pilot episode and episode 2 this show has completely blown everything that I have seen so far aside from Hibike 2 (which it still edges out in terms of pilot ep comparison--not seen ep 2 so I can't compare it as a whole unfortunately) out of the water. The direction is stunning, it's soundtrack is incredible, it has one of the absolute best OPs and EDs of the whole season so far and it is humongous entertaining and charming. It's like a trigger show that is made by someone outside of trigger. That said, what it does incredibly well is that I feel like there is definitely going to be a darker side to this show, and this is hinted at throughout the first two episodes where
one of the two MCs almost dies in both of the first two episodes, there is a constant sense that there is something big happening in the background that we don't know about yet
and with the OP also having an incredibly sombre tone despite the type of show being incredibly upbeat and charming. Like, I could go for hours about everything this does well just using it's OP alone, but then when the actual show holds up to the same immense quality of the OP unlike something else on this season (*cough* Occult;Nine *cough*) then you really can tell that what you are watching is special. The best part about this though is that I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it while still being able to see lots of little hints to other fiction within the episodes and the worlds they visit.* It just presents so much to us without leaving you completely overloaded while also retaining such a high level of charm in every scene that it just feels like the kind of show that I'm sure anyone will be able to find something to love about. Also it not having a >9.0 initial-episode rating on MAL is a complete travesty and is further evidence that the MAL community is incompetent in the field of critiquing for anyone that hasn't realised it already.
Episode one has loose (and probably unintentional) references to things like Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (sweet snow), The Snowman (the main character flying around holding onto their newfound friend over the snowy landscape) and the Chronicles of Narnia (the MC in Narnia steps through the wardrobe into a snowscape, and there is even a snowy forest), whereas episode two reminds me a lot of Alice in Wonderland (falling down the well), Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita (art style, colour pallate and fantasy setting, assuming I'm remembering Humanity has Declined correctly) while also hinting at little aspects of both mahou shoujo and princess shows with Papika's pink dress while also further backing up the hints from both episodes that this is probably going to be the first non-kids mahou shoujo since Madoka that isn't a clone of said show)
If it stays as good as it has been so far for the rest of the season it may become my favorite show that I've seen so far.

Flip Flappers' pilot blew me away. Excellent animation, excellent soundtrack, and an excellent plot, even if it is a bit cliche (though I've heard the show makes a bit of a joke of this in ep 2 which I have yet to watch). Can't wait for more.
Yuri on ice? More like yaoi on ice.

Edit: I'm sure nobody has ever thought of this one before
I actually thought this show was about lesbians at first.

I really like the artstyle of Flip Flappers and the artistic designs of the worlds explored so far. But I will wait one more episode to make up of my opinion since besides those things, it doesn't feel like anything that I haven't seen very often in anime.
Also the very end of Episode 1 was completely ignored in Episode 2...did the writters actually forgot about that or did they do that on purpose? At least Papika and Cocona don't seem to remember anything.

Keijo, on the other hand, blew my mind. How can an anime based on beating each other up with butts be more intense than an average chapter of Shonen Manga or their anime counterparts namely Bleach or Dragon Ball Super?
To be fair, I am judging from just 2 episodes but I don't even...That has to be some kind of bad joke that I am enjoying that bullshit or maybe the writters and staff are just that amazing.

4th Season of Working: I love the over the top unrealistic characters of the Working series. I am kinda worried if series can still keep up with a completely new cast of characters, since there is a redevelopment from the ground up and judging how animes who change the entire cast handle characters in their franchises, they have usually rehashed development from the previous installment. I feel that would work better, if an older character that already experienced something like that, would be used as a springboard for such development. But it is still to early to jump the gun, obviously.

Also I just finished Psycho Mob 100 and was kinda disappointed by the animation. I expected that, considering the simple designs of the characters, there animation quality would be a lot more detailed in certain scenes and there would be less still images or irrelevant pandaring mouthmotions with irrelevant lines like explaining your power, in shonen fashion, to your opponent.
But otherwise I enjoyed it quiet a lot.

Real post:

I'm watching Drifters, Euphonium, Occultic;Nine, Yuri on Ice and 3-gatsu.

Drifters is solid and gory as fuck. All the characters stand out and give a lot of character to pretty generic scenes otherwise. Jojo director is at the helm.

Anyone who watched the first episode of Occultic;Nine and got put off because of confusion, you need to get back on that shit pronto. There's so many interesting things going on there, a lot of really engaging and tightly directed scenes, colorful characters and everything. Probably the show that has me the most hyped, but that's just because I like these shows that have these "stories" to tell about its characters and reveal them over the course of the show.

Euph's premiere had me bored to tears, but the second episode was faaaantastic, and had everything I liked about the series.

Uhhh, speaking of bored to tears, 3-gatsu had that problem at the start of the first episode. Things get more interesting later, but the pace stays really kind of slow, and the art isn't all that great, and the directing seems all low-effort. Which bums me out, because it's a charming story.

Yuri on Ice, though, is waay too energetic. It's sharp and crisp and tight and interesting and engaging but it refuses to let the individual scenes sink in, which hurts it a lot. Classic MAPPA. Still a great show to watch.

As for others, I watched the first two episodes of Gi(a)rlish Number. It's really snarky and satirical, which is great uuuuntil they introduced the bland side characters, which is a sign that it's all downhill from here. Besides, I don't care enough to watch Wataru throw shit at seiyuus and production people. Go home, jerk, you're drunk.

people on /r/anime are all over 3-gatsu no lion but I'm just... not sold on it yet? it's good at setting up atmosphere and at being realistic with how it portrays its characters, I guess, but so was Chihayafuru and it managed to do that without boring me to tears for half of each episode. 3-gatsu also seems determined to give me emotional whiplash or something because it'll transition from a depressing, somber, borderline-pretentious flashback to a breakneck-pace frenetic comedy that looks like it came straight out of Nichijou. you could make the argument that the scene transitions are supposed to be jarring because they represent how Kiryama actually feels in every day life, but there are tons of other anime that just do a much better job of balancing their serious moments and their comedy: most of the Monogatari series, Erased, and even YLIA, for example, despite one of the biggest criticisms of YLIA being that the comedy feels out of place.

the shogi scene in epsiode 2 contributed virtually nothing (coming from someone who has zero understanding of shogi) and i'm hoping that they step it up in future episodes. other series like Chihayafuru and Hikaru No Go still found ways to make their games interesting to total outsiders, and even though 3-gatsu isn't a sports series i'd still like to see them do more with the shogi games

it's not a bad show by any means but I've seen people calling it literally the best SoL ever made, AotY, etc, and I'm not on that hype train just yet

flip flappers is really good, hopefully it can keep it up

keijo!!!!!!!! is enjoyable and feels a lot like the MonMusu of the season

SLICE OF LIVES:
As an unashamed fan on the slice of life genre who is severely unsatisfied with this season. I thought I'd make a collection of some kind of obscure stuff that I've enjoyed recently for anyone with SOL void.

KAMICHU!

A show about a middle school girl who becomes a Shinto god. A really ghibli esque slice of life about a girl trying to get her crush to notice her and do well at school whilst simultaneously trying to fulfill her divine duties as a god helping out spirits and her local shrine. The art is pretty great and the show sometimes reminds me of a more lighthearted version of Mushishi. Pretty much requires some context of the Shinto religion to understand so read the Wikipedia page before watching. Plus the ending is way too catchy.

Romeo no aoi sora

Half slice of life half historical drama, Romeo no aoi sora is an anime from way back in the 90s where a kid living in rural italy a few hundered years ago is forced into chimney sweeping in Milan to pay off a debt. The story focuses on how he manages his new life in Milan and the drama that evolves from meeting new people, fulfilling promises and living the harsh life of a chimney sweep.

Ikoku no meiro no croisee

During the 19th century when the popularity of Japanese culture is peeking in the west. A french traveler in Japan is approached by a little Japanese girl who wants to experience French culture. So he takes her back to his shop in Paris where she begins working and living in a metal working shop in a gallery.
The show follows the girl, Yune, as she learns about and manages the cultural differences of France and Japan. And follows the trouble of her hosts as they have to care for a girl from a different culture whilst dealing with a shop losing business.
