Linoone [GP 2/2]

[OVERVIEW]
The combination of Belly Drum and Extreme Speed makes Linoone a potent and often unprepared-for sweeper, while Seed Bomb allows Linoone to bypass traditional Normal-type checks such as Rhydon and Regirock and Unaware users such as Quagsire. Unfortunately, poor defensive stats and HP often make it challenging to successfully use Belly Drum. Linoone also lacks a reliable way to bypass Steel-types such as Steelix, Ferroseed, and Mawile even at +6, and its poor Attack stat means it will fail to OHKO bulkier Pokemon such as Weezing and Mega Audino. Lastly, Linoone is very one-dimensional, so an experienced opponent will know what to expect and be wary of giving Linoone an opportunity to set up.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
Belly Drum raises Linoone's otherwise lackluster Attack stat to +6 at the cost of 50% of its maximum HP. Extreme Speed is a powerful STAB and priority move and maximizes Linoone's sweeping potential alongside Belly Drum. Seed Bomb hits bulky Rock-types such as Rhydon, Regirock, and Omastar that resist Extreme Speed, with the added benefit of nailing Quagsire for 4x super effective damage. Shadow Claw smacks Gourgeist-XL and Trevenant for super effective damage while also hitting Ferroseed neutrally and nailing Psychic-types such as defensive Mesprit and Musharna for more damage than Extreme Speed. Substitute allows Linoone to dodge status from defensive Pokemon such as Bronzor, Altaria, and Clefairy and makes it even harder to revenge kill.

Set Details
========
Maximum Attack investment allows Linoone to hit as hard as possible, while the HP and mixed defensive investment maximizes its bulk. An alternate spread of 160 HP /252 Atk / 96 Spe can be used to outpace non-Speed-boosting nature base 80s, such as Mesprit and Kabutops, and smack them with super effective Shadow Claw and Seed Bomb; however, this is fairly niche and normally outclassed by the increased bulk of the main EV spread. Another EV spread of 40 HP / 252 Atk / 216 Spe with a Jolly nature can be used to outspeed Ghost-types that can usually revenge kill Linoone and cut its sweep short, such as Haunter and Rotom. This niche, however, is usually not worth the drop in power and loss of bulk when compared to the main spread. Sitrus Berry is the selected item, aiding Linoone in its search to find opportunities to set up a Belly Drum throughout a battle. Linoone's ability is largely irrelevant, as Quick Feet is illegal with Extreme Speed, and Sitrus Berry already activates at 50%, so Gluttony is essentially useless as well. Pickup is similarly almost never actually useful in battle but is slightly more optimal than the other abilities listed, as it can allow Linoone to pick up an item vs other Sitrus Berry users such as Drifblim and opposing Linoone on rare occasions.

Usage Tips
========
Linoone is a frail Pokemon that offers next to no defensive utility, so avoid switching it into attacks. Linoone is also typically best used as a late-game cleaner, once its checks such as Steelix, Ferroseed, Mawile, and faster Ghost-types have been weakened. In almost all cases, Linoone will only have one opportunity to set up Belly Drum throughout a battle, so do not recklessly attempt to do so. It is usually unwise to attempt to set up on any offensive Pokemon without the assistance of Light Screen, Reflect or Memento, and any defensive Pokemon with status moves such as Will-O-Wisp will also deter Linoone's sweep. Due to these factors, setting up with Linoone is often very difficult but can be done against Taunted defensive Pokemon such as Miltank, Bronzor, and Clefairy or a handicapped offensive Pokemon, such as a burned physical attacker or a Pokemon that has been put to sleep.

Team Options
========
Pokemon that can pressure or lure in opposing Steel-types such as Hidden Power Fire Mesprit, Heat Wave Archeops, and Focus Blast Garbodor work well with Linoone, as they blow through the aforementioned Steel-types that Linoone despises. Pursuit trappers such as Skuntank, Liepard, and Choice Band Scyther are solid teammates to pair with Linoone, as they can efficiently trap Ghost-types that make it hard for Linoone to spam Extreme Speed. In a similar vein, Probopass can trap Steel-types such as Steelix, Mawile, and Aggron with ease due to Magnet Pull while also setting up Stealth Rock to aid Linoone in an eventual Belly Drum sweep. Linoone greatly appreciates Spikes support from the likes of Garbodor, Ferroseed, and Omastar, as Spikes helps mitigate Linoone's mediocre Attack stat by weakening defensive Pokemon capable of surviving a +6 Extreme Speed, such as Mega Audino, Miltank, and Mawile. These entry hazards also break Focus Sashes and Sturdy, which would otherwise likely cut Linoone's sweep short. Similarly, Linoone requires hazard removal of its own, as it is already hard enough for Linoone to set up from full HP. Light Screen and Reflect help mitigate Linoone's somewhat poor defenses and make setting up a Belly Drum much easier. Some better users of Light Screen and Reflect are Xatu, Claydol, and Mesprit. Finally, Memento support from the likes of Skuntank and Mismagius also makes setting up with Linoone far easier and has the added benefit of providing Linoone with a free switch in against a vulnerable foe.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Return can be used to OHKO defensive Pokemon such as Weezing from full HP, but this is niche, and the added benefit of hitting Ghost-types super effectively with Shadow Claw is usually more useful. Protect can be used to bypass Fake Out from the likes of Kangaskhan and Hariyama but is again niche and usually less useful than Shadow Claw. Salac Berry can be used over Sitrus Berry, allowing Linoone to outspeed Ghost-types that usually revenge kill it such as Mismagius, Haunter, and Rotom while maintaining an Adamant nature, but most of the time the extra HP from a Sitrus Berry is more useful for setting up with Linoone and avoiding revenge killers with priority.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Steel-types**: Steel-types, especially Steelix, Ferroseed, Mawile, and Aggron, completely wall Linoone and can beat it one-on-one even when it is at +6.

**Faster Ghost-Types**: Ghost-types that outpace Linoone such as Rotom, Mismagius, and Haunter are immune to Extreme Speed and can revenge kill Adamant Linoone.

**Chip Damage**: Any form of chip damage, such as from Rocky Helmet, entry hazards, sand and hail, or Aftermath from Garbodor and Skuntank, makes it very difficult to set up a Belly Drum with Linoone.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Incredibly physically bulky Pokemon such as Miltank, Weezing, and Mega Audino can take a +6 Extreme Speed from full and respond with a status move that will hinder Linoone's sweep. Similarly, Gurdurr and Gourgeist-XL can survive any +6 attack and OHKO back with Drain Punch and Foul Play, respectively.

Make sure to emphasise that Quagsire walls Linoone without Seed Bomb thanks to Unaware (and it's barely 2HKO'd by Seed Bomb anyways). Extremespeed is also +2 priority so I'm not sure how relevant outspeeding Shiftry and Samurott is. Most NU Ghost-types either outspeed you or not regardless of Speed investment, same for Seed Bomb's targets, which makes me wonder how much Linoone actually needs Speed investment at all. The calculator suggests 172 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Def / 40 SpD as the optimal spread for bulk, but honestly I'd just put it all in Defense since Linoone's bulk is hopefully only ever going to be relevant vs Fake Out users. The only case I can think of off the top of my head is outspeeding Klinklang so you can hit it for about 75% with +6 Shadow Claw.

252+ Atk Silk Scarf Kangaskhan Fake Out vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Linoone: 103-123 (34.6 - 41.4%)
252+ Atk Silk Scarf Kangaskhan Fake Out vs. 0 HP / 252 Def Linoone: 75-88 (25.2 - 29.6%)

If someone's only remaining solution to Linoone is bringing in a Fake Out user, sacrificing a mon, repeat, this could be very relevant. Can someone else from QC weigh in on this?

when does linoone ever drop seed bomb? Regarding the set ev's, I agree no speed is really needed. Not sure on what the optimal spread is though, so once we work that out between QC i'll update this.

Regarding the set's EVs, they should focus on outrunning things that Linoone wouldn't Extreme Speed against. For Adamant Linoone, the fastest target would be Kabutops, letting u Seed Bomb it to prevent it from going for anything stronger than Aqua Jet; that requires 196 Speed EVs for Jolly Tops and 96 for Adamant, though going 196 is the safer bet. Jolly Linoone on the other hand wants at least 216 Speed EVs to outrun Haunter as well as Rotom. You could just run max Speed for Gourgeist-Small, though I doubt its relevancy to be worth the extra investment; then again the HP investment isn't helping Linoone a lot so you probably might as well just go max.

Linoone's ability is largely irrelevant, as Quick Feet is illegal with Extreme Speed, Pickup has no competitive use, and Sitrus Berry already activates at 50% so Gluttony is essentially useless as well.
Just want to point out that Pickup does actually have competitive use; it lets Linoone acquire the foe's item on the turn it has been consumed. With that said, the only practical scenario I can think of would be stealing Sitrus Berry from Harvest Pokemon (assuming you don't OHKO them, which you probably should), but it is at least worth noting when compared to Gluttony, which actually does nothing. You could instead say that Pickup is highly impractical, or its usefulness is below situational.

I think the majority of non-Scarf Kabutops are Adamant, so Adamant Linoone with 96 Speed EVs sounds like a good compromise between Speed and bulk to me. You have to weigh up the risk of winning a few niche matchups vs taking more damage from priority and attacks in general, which is non-trivial when Linoone has Dual Screens support. 196 Speed for Jolly Kabutops / Jolly nature for Haunter etc should be talked about in Set Comments. This leads to a horrendous primary EV spread of 120 HP / 252 Atk / 20 Def / 20 SpD / 96 Spe with an Adamant nature, although I'm sure 160 HP / 252 Atk / 96 Spe is similar enough to warrant using instead (especially with how discrete HP values work...)

Also Pickup is legal in teambuilder so I guess use that for now. It's also relevant vs other Sitrus users such as Drifblim and rival Linoone I guess???

Implemented the above besides the ev spread which bolts hootie and i agreed upon. This should be ready for an actual QC check now

In that case, you can list the other EV spreads (erisia's 96 Spe Adamant and my 216 Spe Jolly), as well as their purposes, as alternatives in Set Details.

Shadow Claw smacks Ghost-types such as Rotom, Mismagius, and Gourgeist for Super-effective damage while also hitting Psychic-types such as Mesprit and Musharna for more damage than Extreme Speed.
You know, you say "super effective damage", but it doesn't actually give any implications here, given that +6 Seed Bomb already OHKOes Rotom and Mismagius while Gourgeist-XL isn't OHKOed by +6 Shadow Claw, so you have to be more specific on what Shadow Claw actually allows you to do. You also want to specify that you're using Shadow Claw against defensive Mesprit, since offensive Mesprit outspeeds you and you'd much rather be ESpeeding that.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Incredibly physically bulky Pokemon such as Miltank, Weezing, and Mega-Audino can take a +6 Extreme Speed from full and respond with a status that will hinder Linoone's sweep.
Gourgeist-XL and Gurdurr deserve special mention here, as not only can they survive +6 hits, but they can immediately KO back with Foul Play or Drain Punch, respectively.

evs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Def / 40 Spd
Should be SpD.

On another note, since that Shadow Claw seems just inconsistent enough to be expendable, I suggest slashing Substitute alongside it. Given that your "Bulky Pokemon" C&C section relies heavily on status to best Linoone, being able to circumvent them is notable enough to be added, not to mention it can potentially buy a free turn of setup against status users. In fact, Substitute seems to complement the new bulkier spread better than Shadow Claw, the latter of which is only really effective on faster Linoone spreads, so I suggest slashing Sub before Shadow Claw. Heck, maybe even unslash Shadow Claw and put it into moves, while mentioning it being more useful on Jolly variants of Linoone (which you can mention in Set Details).

Implemented all of the above. Moved Sub from OO to moves instead of giving it a slash for reasons listed in the analysis. Unless rest of QC feels otherwise this is how i'll keep it.

pickup is legal with the ability capsule thing from xy. gluttony is not legal tho so you can axe the mention of that.

i'd mention somewhere (team support prolly?) that hazards to break sashes/sturdy are important because linoone can't really afford to take any extra damage after setting up.

looks good tho 2/3

After doing some number-crunching, I've calculated that a slightly more efficient spread is 164 HP / 252 Atk / 48 Def / 44 SpD (proof below).

Formula: (HP x Def) + (HP x SpD) = overall "bulk value"

Original:
(340 x 169) + (340 x 168) = 114,580

New: (338 x 170) + (338 x 169) = 114,582

Usage Tips

It is usually unwise to attempt to set up on any offensive Pokemon without the assistance of Light Screen or Reflect
Memento should be mentioned here as well

good stuff QC 3/3

252 SpA Life Orb Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 172 HP / 40 SpD Linoone: 259-305 (76.1 - 89.7%)
252 SpA Life Orb Abomasnow Blizzard vs. 164 HP / 44 SpD Linoone: 257-304 (76 - 89.9%)

4 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Earthquake vs. 172 HP / 44 Def Linoone: 122-144 (35.8 - 42.3%)
4 Atk Life Orb Abomasnow Earthquake vs. 164 HP / 48 Def Linoone: 122-144 (36 - 42.6%)

The difference in bulk between these spreads is so minor that discrete HP numbers have more influence on which spread is better than the raw product. Stick with the old spread imo.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Steel-types**: Steel-types, especially Steelix, Ferroseed, Mawile, and Aggron, (AC) hard wall Linoone, (RC) and can beat it one on one one-on-one even when it is (dangler) at +6.

**Faster Ghost-Types**: Ghost-types that outpace Linoone such as Rotom, Mismagius, and Haunter are immune to Extreme Speed and can revenge kill Adamant Linoone with their secondary STAB moves (Mismagius doesn't have a secondary STAB move, so maybe just say "...and can revenge kill Adamant Linoone."?).

**Chip Damage**: Any form of chip damage such as Rocky Helmet, entry hazards, sand and hail, or Aftermath damage from Garbodor and Skuntank makes it very difficult to set up a Belly Drum with Linoone.

**Bulky Pokemon**: Incredibly physically bulky Pokemon such as Miltank, Weezing, and Mega Audino (RH) can take a +6 Extreme Speed from full and respond with a status move that will hinder Linoone's sweep. Similarly, Gurdurr and Gourgeist-XL can survive any +6 attack and OHKO back with Drain Punch and Foul Play, (AC) respectively.

[OVERVIEW]
The combination of Belly Drum and Extreme Speed makes Linoone a potent and often unprepared-for sweeper, while Seed Bomb allows Linoone to bypass traditional normal Normal-type checks such as Rhydon and Regirock and Unaware users such as Quagsire. Unfortunately, poor defensive stats and HP often make it challenging to successfully use Belly Drum. Linoone also lacks a reliable way to bypass Steel-types such as Steelix, Ferroseed, and Mawile, (comma) even at +6, and its poor Attack stat means it will fail to OHKO bulkier Pokemon such as Weezing and Mega-(hyphen)Audino. Lastly, Linoone is very one-dimensional, and, as such, so an experienced opponent will know what to expect and be wary of giving Linoone an opportunity to set up.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========
Belly Drum raises Linoone's otherwise lackluster Attack stat to +6 at the cost of 50% of its maximum HP. Extreme Speed is a powerful STAB and priority move and has excellent synergy with Belly Drum (elaborate please). Seed Bomb hits bulky Rock-types such as Rhydon, Regirock, and Omastar that resist Extreme Speed, with the added benefit of nailing Quagsire for 4x super effective damage. Shadow Claw smacks Gourgeist-XL and Trevenant for super effective damage while also hitting Ferroseed neutrally and nailing Psychic-types such as defensive Mesprit and Musharna for more damage than Extreme Speed does. Substitute allows Linoone to dodge status from defensive Pokemon such as Bronzor, Altaria, and Clefairy and makes it even harder to revenge kill.

Set Details
========
Pickup is similarly almost never actually useful in battle but is slightly more optimal than the other abilities listed, as it can allow Linoone to pick up an item vs other Sitrus Berry users such as Drifblim and rival opposing Linoone on rare occasions.

Usage Tips
========
Linoone is a frail Pokemon that offers next to no defensive utility, so avoid switching it into attacks. Linoone is also typically best used as a late-game cleaner, once it's its checks such as Steelix, Ferroseed, Mawile, and faster Ghost-types have been weakened. In almost all cases, Linoone will only have one opportunity to set up Belly Drum throughout a battle, so do not recklessly attempt to do so. It is usually unwise to attempt to set up on any offensive Pokemon without the assistance of Light Screen, Reflect or Memento, and any defensive Pokemon with status moves such as Will-oO-Wisp will also deter Linoone's sweep. Due to these factors, setting up with Linoone is often very difficult but can be done by attempting to set up (came off as fairly redundant) against Taunted defensive Pokemon such as Miltank, Bronzor, and Clefairy or a handicapped offensive Pokemon, such as a burned physical attacker or a Pokemon that has been put to sleep.

Team Options
========
Pokemon that can pressure and or lure in opposing Steel-types such as Hidden Power Fire Mesprit, Heat Wave Archeops, and Focus Blast Garbodor work well with Linoone, as they blow through the aforementioned Steel-types that Linoone despises. Linoone greatly appreciateds Spikes support from the likes of Garbodor, Ferroseed, and Omastar, as Spikes helps mitigate Linoone's mediocre Attack stat by weakening defensive Pokemon capable of surviving a +6 Extreme Speed, such as Mega Audino, Miltank, and Mawile. These entry hazards also break Focus Sashes and Sturdy, which would otherwise likely cut Linoone's sweep short. Similarly, Linoone requires hazard removal of its own, as it is already hard enough for Linoone to set up from full HP, (comma) and having to deal with hazards only compounds this difficulty.

=============

Salac Berry can be used over Sitrus Berry, allowing Linoone to outspeed Ghost-types that usually revenge kill it such as Mismagius, Haunter, and Rotom while maintaining an Adamant nature, but most of the time the extra HP from a Sitrus Berry is more useful in for setting up with Linoone and avoiding revenge killers with(space)priority.
