Project USUM OU Victim of the Week [Week 49: Dragon Dance Gyarados]

Not open for further replies.
Alright, voting is over. Thanks for the participation. Here are the results.

Checks: Toxapex (ethanlol ) / Mega Gyarados (Creator of Chaos ) / Slowking (TURBODERP )
Counters: Magearna (HotFuzzBall ) / Chansey (AM ) / Gastrodon (Rotom-Undefined ).

This week, our victim will be Rockzium Landorus-T

Landorus-Therian @ Rockium Z
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Swords Dance
- Stone Edge
- Rock Polish / Stealth Rock

This Landorus-T set has Swords Dance to boost its already high Attack while Stone Edge gives it the EdgeQuake coverage. Rockium Z also allows Landorus to crush physically bulky monsters like Celesteela, Rotom-W and Skarmory. How do you check or counter this Pokemon in OU?

EDIT: Slashed in Rock Polish

Quagsire as a Counter

Quagsire @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Relaxed Nature
- Scald
- Earthquake
- Recover
- Toxic

Quagsire's physical bulk and ability makes it a nice counter to SD Landorus-T. Firstly, setting up SDs and Rock Polishes won't help defeat Quagsire. Secondly, Continental Crush does pitiful damage. Finally, Earthquake only 3HKOes Quagsire after SR damage and Leftovers recovery (in a pinch, Quagsire has a 1/3 chance to survive two Earthquakes after SR and one layer of Spikes). In return, Quagsire can Recover its HP and 2HKO Landorus-T with Scald, which is guaranteed if it successfully burns it (by the way, I moved the usual 4 SpDef EVs to its SpAtk to increase the chance of 2HKOing Landorus-T with Scald by 18%). Unfortunately, Quagsire does not prevent Landorus-T to setup SR on its side of the battlefield.
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Quagsire: 93-110 (23.6 - 27.9%) -- 3.6% chance to 3HKO after Stealth Rock, 3 layers of Spikes, and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Quagsire: 156-184 (39.5 - 46.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock and Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Unaware Quagsire: 156-184 (39.5 - 46.7%) -- 33.6% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock, 1 layer of Spikes, and Leftovers recovery

4 SpA Quagsire Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 150-176 (47 - 55.1%) -- 66.8% chance to 2HKO

Manaphy @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Tail Glow
- Energy Ball

Manaphy can't switch in too well as it takes a good chunk from Continental Crush and Earthquake; however it can click Surf or Ice beam and get an easy KO

Check: LO Mamoswine.

Mamoswine @ Life Orb
Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spe / 4 SpD
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- Icicle Crash / Icicle Spear
- Ice Shard
- Knock Off / Superpower

Mamo isn't a counter because it can't take a +2 attack, but it can survive any unboosted hit (as long as SR is off the field in CC's case), outspeed and blast Lando into the next game with whichever Ice STAB you feel like using.

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 235-277 (65 - 76.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mamoswine: 281-331 (77.8 - 91.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Crash vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Landorus-Therian: 795-936 (249.2 - 293.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Icicle Spear (2 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Landorus-Therian: 468-562 (146.7 - 176.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Life Orb Mamoswine Ice Shard vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Landorus-Therian: 374-442 (117.2 - 138.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Keldeo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Justified
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Scald
- Secret Sword
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power Electric / Icy Wind

Keldeo as a Check

Keldeo isn't the best answer to Landorus-Therian, but Keldeo can live any unboosted attack and OHKO it with Scald.

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 211-250 (65.3 - 77.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 127-149 (39.3 - 46.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Keldeo: 70-83 (21.6 - 25.6%) -- 69.2% chance to 4HKO after Stealth Rock

252 SpA Keldeo Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 314-372 (98.4 - 116.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

Counters? What are those?

Check

Greninja @ Choice Specs
Ability: Battle Bond
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Hydro Pump
- Dark Pulse
- Water Shuriken
- Ice Beam / U-turn

Ash Greninja poses as a massive threat to Lando-T and as a stopper on it's ability to sweep. Water Shuriken negates Landorus-T's potential +2 speed and cleanly KOs, whereas if Greninja has had its Choice Specs knocked off it still KOs with Stealth Rock damage. If Greninja is unable to transform, Water Shuriken still deals *very* heavy damage to it, and if it can't get to +2 it just drops to Hydro Pump or Ice Beam from either forme regardless.

Physically defensive Rotom-Wash as a Check.

Rotom-Wash @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 240 Def / 20 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp
- Pain Split

Rotom-Wash can switch in on Earthquake, unboosted Continental Crush or Stone Edge. However +2 Continental Crush OHKOs it. Hydro Pump has a 56% chance to OHKO Lando-T from full hp and a 100% chance to OHKO after SR.

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 248 HP / 240+ Def Rotom-Wash: 162-191 (53.4 - 63%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 240+ Def Rotom-Wash: 90-107 (29.7 - 35.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Leftovers recovery
+2 252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 240+ Def Rotom-Wash: 180-212 (59.4 - 69.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
0 SpA Rotom-Wash Hydro Pump vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 296-350 (92.7 - 109.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock

What's one of the only counters to almost any variant of Lando-T in OU?

Pyukumuku @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 228 Def / 28 SpD
IVs: 0 Atk
- Curse
- Baton Pass
- Toxic
- Recover

This thing. It's the bulkiest Unaware user in the game on the physical and special side, and also has reliable recovery. Unfortunately, 0 offensive moves and garbage speed mean Pyukumuku is best suited for stall/semi-stall teams. Nonetheless, with Baton Pass and access to Curse, it isn't a total momentum killer.

Set and EVs taken from the OU analysis.

252 HP and 28 Special Defense EVs give Pyukumuku enough special bulk to avoid a 2HKO from Modest Manaphy's Energy Ball and let Pyukumuku take Moonblasts from Calm Mind Tapu Lele.

Physically, you wall the crap out of this Lando-T set.

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 228+ Def Pyukumuku: 142-168 (45.2 - 53.5%) -- 1.2% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

And,

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 228+ Def Pyukumuku: 118-141 (37.5 - 44.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Meaning that you can switch in on Continental Crush (even with Rocks up), take an EQ and just Recover back up. Then Toxic or Curse and BP out to something.

In fact, Pyukumuku can even eat Supersonic Skystrike's and Tectonic Rages if it comes in on the boost (you can't switch into the Z-move and live the EQ, but that's not doable for almost anything).

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Supersonic Skystrike (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 228+ Def Pyukumuku: 207-244 (65.9 - 77.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Tectonic Rage (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 228+ Def Pyukumuku: 213-252 (67.8 - 80.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

For people wondering why to use this over Quagsire, especially given the lack of offensive presence: Pyukumuku also checks/counters quite a few special attackers like Manaphy, Scarf Lele, Scarf Hoopa, and the like that Quagsire can't handle.

Tangrowth as a Check

Tangrowth @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 248 HP / 212 Def / 48 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Sleep Powder
- Giga Drain
- Knock Off
- Hidden Power Ice

Thanks to its bulk, tangrowth can take both Earthquake and Stone Edge at +2 and even a Continental Crush and land a 2HKO with Hidden Power Ice.
+2 252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 164-194 (40.6 - 48.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 148-175 (36.7 - 43.4%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
0 SpA Tangrowth Hidden Power Ice vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 224-268 (70.2 - 84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The only situation that can lose is against a +2 Continental Crush + Stone Edge because it's slower.
+2 252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 248 HP / 212+ Def Tangrowth: 296-349 (73.4 - 86.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Pheromosa as a check. Pheromosa definitely should not be switching into Landorus-T but, it can revenge kill it with Ice Beam if Landorus-T isn't at +2 Spe.

reserving Gliscor

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
EVs: 244 HP / 168 SpD / 96 Spe
Careful Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Facade
- Roost

Gliscor as a counter to Landorus-T. Gliscor tanks a Continental Crush and can begin to set up Swords Dance in order to knock out Landorus-T with Facade and Roost off any damage. Gliscor is also immune to Earthquake.

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 244 HP / 8 Def Gliscor: 192-226 (54.5 - 64.2%) -- 91.8% chance to 2HKO after Poison Heal

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 244 HP / 8 Def Gliscor: 107-126 (30.3 - 35.7%) -- 5% chance to 4HKO after Poison Heal

+2 0 Atk Gliscor Facade (140 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Landorus-Therian: 209-246 (65.5 - 77.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
Landorus can just SD up on Gliscor, outspeed and OHKO with a +2 Continental Crush, so it's not a counter.

Landorus-Therian (M) @ Rocky Helmet / Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 HP / 216 Def / 24 SpD / 16 Spe
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Knock Off / U-turn

Role: Check

Defensive Lando-T, funnily enough, does well against its offensive counterpart. Continental Crush fails to 2HKO after Intimidate without a Swords Dance boost, and HP Ice will 2HKO in return. Be careful coming in on a boost, though.

I'm using calcs with and without the Z-move here.

-1 252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 216+ Def Landorus-Therian: 69-82 (18 - 21.4%) -- possible 5HKO
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 216+ Def Landorus-Therian: 103-122 (26.9 - 31.9%) -- guaranteed 4HKO
+1 252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 252 HP / 216+ Def Landorus-Therian: 155-183 (40.5 - 47.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
-1 252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 216+ Def Landorus-Therian: 124-146 (32.4 - 38.2%) -- 97.4% chance to 3HKO
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 216+ Def Landorus-Therian: 186-219 (48.6 - 57.3%) -- 94.1% chance to 2HKO
+1 252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 252 HP / 216+ Def Landorus-Therian: 277-327 (72.5 - 85.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Bronzong is a pretty established Lando-T counter, but perhaps you can explain that spicy EV spread? Wouldn't more Defense be beneficial to withstanding physical hits from Lando-T?

Latias (check)

Latias (F) @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Draco Meteor
- Defog
- Roost
- Psychic / Ice Beam

Latias has no problem switching into 3 of Landorus' moves, and then can outspeed and retaliate. Draco Meteor does at least 70%, but if you desperately need to ensure a clean OHKO, Ice Beam exists.

Stone Edge does around 50% to Latias, while Continental Crush falls just short of a OHKO. This means that Latias can Roost in front of Landorus to stay healthy for the next switchin, even if she switches in on Stone Edge.

Although Latias can't switch into a lot of other Landorus sets, she is notable for fitting on any type of team playstyle, as well having Defog to immediately undo any Stealth Rocks that Landorus might try to set up.

252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Latias: 141-167 (46.8 - 55.4%) -- 17.6% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Latias: 254-299 (84.3 - 99.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
(remember Latias probably won't be taking SR damage on the switch-in if Landorus is the SR setter)

252 SpA Latias Draco Meteor vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 228-268 (71.4 - 84%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 248 HP / 248 Def / 12 Spe
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Scald
- Moonblast
- Taunt

Tapu Fini can't switch in on anything if Landorus-T is at +2, but once it does, Landorus-T is 2HKOed by Scald. If Fini is somehow able to set up, Scald becomes an OHKO after one round of SR damage.

Offensive:
0 SpA Tapu Fini Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 200-236 (62.6 - 73.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+1 0 SpA Tapu Fini Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 300-354 (94 - 110.9%) -- 62.5% chance to OHKO

+1 0 SpA Tapu Fini Moonblast vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Landorus-Therian: 178-210 (55.7 - 65.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Defensive:

Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 248 HP / 100 Atk / 72 Def / 60 SpD / 28 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Poison Jab
- Ice Punch
- Hammer Arm
- Leech Life

Unless Lando gets to +2 and uses his Z-move, he's doing piddly damage. Even if you come in on the SD, he has SR, and he uses Continental Crush, you still live to OHKO. 28 speed for TTar, the special bulk makes you a passable switch-in to Pheromosa just for shits and giggles, and the rest in Atk for obvious reasons. You just have to stay at full health throughout the game, which Leech Life makes easier, but you may want to swap in Roost over something just in case.

Clefable @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
- Moonblast
- Wish
- Protect
- Heal Bell

Clefable can reliably switch into a continental crush ( Unaware so it doesnt care about sd). It can, then proceed to protect into a wish and then throw out another protect.
Calcs
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Earthquake vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 171-202 (43.4 - 51.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Landorus-Therian Continental Crush (180 BP) vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Clefable: 205-242 (52.0 - 61.4%) -- 97.7% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

It gets a protect off after the first hit. Lets say it was a Max- Roll Continental Crush, which did 61.4%. It gets to do 61.4%, and Clefable is at 38.6%. It gets two leftovers(one regular, one protected), and gets up to 50.6%. Landorus needs yet another max roll to kill, otherwise wish + protect is gonna beat landorus-t. If you used this on a stall team, your opponent likely would not have set up stealth rocks( particularly considering that the landorus-t (which is the best way to set uo entry hazards against stall) was probably not carrying rocks.
