3 Attacks Mega Slowbro

Slowbro @ Slowbronite
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP/ 216 Def/ 40 SpD
Bold Nature
-Slack Off
-Scald
-Ice Beam
-Fire Blast

Offensive Mega Bro makes for a solid defensive mon in the meta and can bait its usual checks by running an extra coverage move, such as Fire Blast, over Calm Mind. Fire Blast catches Grass-types like Ferrothorn on the switch and hits them hard.

0 SpA Slowbro-Mega Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 304-360 (86.3 - 102.2%) -- 50% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock

+1 252 SpA Tapu Fini Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 244-288 (69.3 - 81.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
Seems simple, supports stuff like sd mimikyu and tapu koko that struggle to break ferrothorn and acts as a backup unexpected wincon.

Tapu Koko @ Tapunium Z
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- U-turn
- Nature's Madness
- Taunt / Hidden Power Ice

This koko set doesn't actually kill ferro but makes it unable to check tapu koko's teammates like choice specs/scarf lele, garchomp or ash gren. Taunt can prevent ferro from recovering with leech seed or setting up hazards as koko u turns out. Hp ice can also be used so you do not find yourself helpless against a 20% hp lando. In my opinion this set is better than hp fire koko as a fero lure because it can also weaken other koko checks like tangrowth or mamoswine and also allows you to break stall, should you use taunt as your 4th move.

Tapu Koko @ Life Orb
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Dazzling Gleam
- U-turn

Ferro is commonly used to switch into Tapu Koko due to the vast majority of them carrying HP Ice to help the matchup vs. Lando-T and due to it commonly spamming U-turn. This takes advantage of this by baiting in Ferrothorn and cleanly 2HKOing it on the switch. The obvious downside to this is that you can't run Hidden Power Ice, so make sure that you are adequately prepared to punish Lando-T if you opt to run this set (although Gleam definitely stings regardless).

Changed my submission to this.

Manaphy @ Icium Z
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Tail Glow
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Psychic / Energy Ball

Ferrothorn normally walls Manaphy and can switch into it freely. However, a +3 Subzero Slammer allows Manaphy to OHKO Ferrothorn 50% of the time after Stealth Rock.

Kyurem-Black @ Life Orb
Ability: Teravolt
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Naughty Nature
- Ice Beam
- Fusion Bolt
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Ferrothorn is usually a safe switch into Kyurem-Black, however HP Fire 2HKOs Ferrothorn on the switch in. Max Special Attack variants of Kyurem-Black can KO Ferrothorn with HP Fire after an Ice Beam or Earth Power.
4 SpA Life Orb Teravolt Kyurem-Black Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 203-244 (57.6 - 69.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Teravolt Kyurem-Black Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 270-322 (76.7 - 91.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

normally ferrothorn beats mega scizor 1v1 and forces it to take a ton of chip damage through leech seed + iron barbs damage while also being able to stack hazards on it but hp fire sciz can 3hko ferrothorn thanks to technician.

0 SpA Technician Scizor-Mega Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 140-168 (39.7 - 47.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Icium Z Manaphy and HP Fire Koko, tbh most of the other sets are either relatively common (HP Fire Kyube/Lati) or suboptimal (non U-Turn Sciz) so yeah I'll stick to these

Reserving HP fire Latios.

Latios @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Psyshock
- Recover
- Hidden Power Fire

Ferrothorn resists both Dragon and Psychic-type attacks, and it has naturally high bulk, so it seems like a great Latios check. However, Latios can ru HP Fire to lure in Ferrothorn and 2HKO it on the switch.

252 SpA Life Orb Latios Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 168 SpD Ferrothorn: 265-312 (75.2 - 88.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
I wouldnt say HP fire lati@s is really a lure anymore, thanks to Hyper Training there isnt any drawback to having HP fire and no smart player will switch a ferro into a latios (without scouting)

Voting is up, the winners are Hidden Power Fire Tapu Koko by Martin and Icium Z Manaphy by Random Passerby!
Superpower Azumarill by nameless90
Hidden Power Fire Latios by écarlate
Fire Blast Mega Slowbro by JTD783 2
Hidden Power Fire Tapu Fini by BluBirD252 1
Tapunium Z Tapu Koko by The Holy Penguin
Hidden Power Fire Tapu Koko by Martin 5
Icium Z Manaphy by Random Passerby 4
Hidden Power Fire Kyurem-B by Jeronado 1
Hidden Power Fire Mega Scizor by matthewc20090 1

Other winner is Fire Blast Mega Slowbro by JTD783.
  • Superpower Azumarill is already pretty common and standard BD almost always OHKOes Ferro after a boost with Knock Off, so it's not really the great Azumarill switch-in in the first place.
  • HP Fire Latios is pretty standard this gen.
  • Non U-turn Mega Scizor kinda sacrifices its main niche as a bulky pivot for a coverage move that doesn't even do that much to Ferrothorn.
  • HP Fire Fini is kinda neat but you can't even OHKO at +2 after rocks and you're taking a ton from Power Whip.
  • That leaves Kyurem-B, Tapunium Koko, and Mega Slowbro. All good lures but I'm going with the latter because Slowbro's ability to potentially OHKO Ferrothorn on the switch is cool and super useful against teams that rely on it as their primary Water-type check. Tapunium Z Tapu Koko looks pretty fun but most common Koko switch-ins have reliable recovery (see Tangrowth, Amoonguss, Mega Scizor) so it doesn't really do that much outside of luring Ferrothorn. Kyurem-B can't even 2HKO if Ferrothorn has Leech Seed + Protect and if it's got Gyro Ball Kyurem is taking a fair amount of damage.

If you disagree with the reasoning or wanna ask about something feel free to pm me btw.

Week 5: Assault Vest Magearna

Magearna @ Assault Vest
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 200 HP / 56 SpA / 252 SpD
Calm Nature
- Fleur Cannon
- Flash Cannon
- Hidden Power Fire / Ice Beam
- Volt Switch
This week we have a Pokemon that's been rising in usage a lot recently. AV Magearna is well known for its ability to act as a catch-all check to a bunch of potent special attackers like Greninja, Mega Alakazam, Latios, Tapu Lele, Tapu Koko, Nihilego, and Gengar. Its access to Volt Switch and its excellent all-around bulk also makes it a good pivot. Set is standard with dual STAB attacks and HP Fire to handle Ferrothorn and Mega Scizor or Ice Beam to hit stuff like Tangrowth sort-of hard. Good luck!

Tapu Koko @ Tapunium Z
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Thunderbolt
- U-turn
- Nature's Madness
- Taunt

Z-boosted Nature's Madness (==> which becomes the move Guardian of Alola) always leaves the target with 25% HP (including Magearna, which is a very bulky check to Tapu Koko).
Then, a Thunderbolt in Electric Terrain finishes the job.

252 SpA Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Magearna in Electric Terrain: 106-126 (29.2 - 34.7%) -- 6.8% chance to 3HKO

This is the pivot set with Nature's Madness + Tapunium Z to overwhelm better its checks or bulky monsters in general for a useful team support. In this calculation I assume AV Magearna coming into play at 100% HP and stomaching a -75% HP on the switch. The lack of recover onto Magearna allows us to use even the regular Nature's Madness to achieve the KO.
The best part of Nature's Madness/Guardian of Alola is that they will alwayscut in half the opponent's HP, regardless of the boosts.
I'd like to underline that Nature's Madness is still very useful even without the Z-stone .

0 Atk Life Orb Latios Earthquake vs. 200 HP / 0 Def Magearna: 153-182 (43.5 - 51.8%) -- 66.8% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock

LO EQ is a half decent lure in general, OHKOing stuff like Magnezone and offensive Heatran, though Latios can still be Timid for those. Hasty LO EQ however has higher chances of OHKOing bulkier Heatran variants after Stealth Rock, and as you can see here as over a 2/3 chance to 2HKO unsuspecting Magearnas after SR.

This isn't a true lure in the sense that you bait the Mag in and kill with an unexpected move, but rather it's a very easy "bait and switch" type play that requires no prediction.

Step 1: Put something in that's going to require AV mag to come in, i.e. tapu lele
Step 2: Attack
Step 3: Switch to toxapex and take any hit, activating eject button
Step 4: Trap with Dugtrio and kill

When i think of clefable checks the first thing that comes to my mind is av magearna.
so it's quite simple, take an oras set and fit it in the meta.
it's quite nice for facing balance/BO builds and a general niche wincon in all sorts.
The spread has enough speed to outspeed standard av sets that don't creep slow stuff and the rest into bulk and damage whilst the HP still enables you to live a modest neutral Flash Cannon. c:

252+ SpA Life Orb Clefable Fire Blast vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Assault Vest Magearna: 161-192 (44.3 - 52.8%) -- 83.2% chance to 2HKO after Stealth Rock
252+ SpA Magearna Flash Cannon vs. 212 HP / 4 SpD Clefable: 314-372 (81.7 - 96.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

knock off mega alakazam

Alakazam-Mega @ Alakazite
Ability: Trace
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Knock Off
- Psychic
- Focus Blast
- Shadow Ball

AV Magearna is usually a fantastic counter to Mega Alakazam, taking very little from its attacks. However, by getting rid of its Assault Vest, Alakazam does much more damage with its attacks, allowing it to wear Magearna down quicker.

magearna without assault vest
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 200 HP / 252+ SpD Magearna: 107-127 (30.4 - 36.1%) -- 51.8% chance to 3HKO

magearna with assault vest
252 SpA Alakazam-Mega Focus Blast vs. 200 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Magearna: 72-85 (20.5 - 24.2%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

Physical Autotomize Celesteela

Celesteela @ Rockium Z
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Autotomize
- Stone Edge
- Earthquake
- Heavy Slam

While this set was made as a lure for Zapdos originally, Physical Celesteela is a cool lure for AV Mage. Magearna can normally come in and take any hit from standard Autotomize Celesteela and fire back with a volt switch. With this set, you are able to 2HKO it on the switch with an adamant max attack Earthquake, which can potentially make Celesteela snowball out of control (beast boost) and sweep the opposing team.

252+ SpA Celesteela Fire Blast vs. 200 HP / 252+ SpD Assault Vest Magearna: 102-120 (29 - 34.1%) -- 1.6% chance to 3HKO (normally can take it on pretty easily)

252+ Atk Celesteela Earthquake vs. 200 HP / 0 Def Magearna: 180-212 (51.2 - 60.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (not anymore)

power

uh-oh, the game in trouble
This is honestly the stupidest set I've ever seen but it's technically a fantastic AV Magearna lure soooo...

Groundium Z Greninja

252 Atk Protean Greninja Tectonic Rage (160 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Magearna: 374-444 (103 - 122.3%) -- guaranteed OHKO

You can just spike on the switch-in and then kill it, for example.

This is pretty self-explanatory since AV Magearna is the premier Protean Greninja check in the tier.
