Battle Spot Kartana Preview [Singles]

[OVERVIEW]

Kartana has proven to be a decent physical attacker in the metagame, boasting a huge Attack stat, a good typing, strong Defense, and a decent Speed tier, but it has rather weak move options. Beast Boost goes a long way, only furthering Kartana's already impressive Attack after it gets a KO. Kartana, however, has extremely poor special bulk and is likely to get OHKOed by almost any neutral special move and, in some cases, even resisted moves.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Leaf Blade
move 3: Sacred Sword
move 4: Smart Strike / Knock Off / Night Slash / Psycho Cut / Giga Impact
item: Fightinium Z / Focus Sash / Darkinium Z / Normalium Z / Grassium Z
ability: Beast Boost
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Swords Dance allows Kartana to boost its already immense Attack stat to assist in breaking bulkier Pokemon.

* Leaf Blade is Kartana's strongest Grass-type STAB move, hitting bulky Water-types such as Suicune and Tapu Fini whilst also giving it great damage on Ground-type targets such as Mamoswine, Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Hippowdon.

* Sacred Sword is used to hit Hydreigon and Porygon2 for more damage as well as Steel-type Pokemon such as Ferrothorn, Stakataka, Magnezone, and opposing Kartana.

* Smart Strike has great all-around coverage hitting Fairy-, Ice-, and Rock-types and the occasional Minimize Clefable and Alolan Muk.

* Knock Off provides coverage for Aeigslash and hits Psychic-types such as Cresselia harder while removing items. However, in order to OHKO these threats after a boost, Darkinium Z and Night Slash is required instead.

* Psycho Cut hits Blaziken, Mega Gengar, Mega Venusaur, and Breloom.

* The given spread with a Jolly nature is ideal for Kartana to perform the role of a fast wallbreaker, outspeeding Garchomp, non-Choice Scarf Tapu Lele, and Hydreigon.

* Fightinium Z lets Kartana break threats such as Celesteela when at +2 while also OHKOing Porygon2.

* Focus Sash ensures that Kartana can set up Swords Dance especially against dedicated special attackers, as even neutral special moves can threaten to OHKO Kartana.

* Normalium Z and Giga Impact give Kartana the ability to break both Charizard and Zapdos as well as hitting Blaziken very hard through Protect via Breakneck Blitz.

* GrassiumZ turns Leaf Blade into a 175-Base Power move, letting Kartana temporarily patch up its weak physical movepool and hit much harder.

* Suffering from a relatively awkward Speed tier, Kartana appreciates a Choice Scarf partner to check faster foes. Kartana's horrible special bulk also highly suggests a bulky partner to take hits. A Fire-resistant Pokemon is also greatly appreciated, as Kartana has a 4x weakness to Fire and is OHKOed even by a physical Fire-type move. Consider Pokemon such as Heatran, Mega Salamence, and Mega Charizard Y.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Leaf Blade
move 2: Sacred Sword
move 3: Smart Strike
move 4: Knock Off / Psycho Cut / Guillotine
item: Choice Scarf

[SET COMMENTS]

* Leaf Blade is the Grass-type STAB option of choice, hitting bulky Water-type Pokemon such as Tapu Fini and Suicune, and common Ground-types such as Mamoswine and Hippowdon.

* Sacred Sword hits Steel-types such as Ferrothorn, Stakataka, and Magnezone for super effective damage while also hitting Hydreigon and opposing Kartana.

* Smart Strike is Kartana's strongest Steel-type STAB move, able to OHKO Tapu Lele and Tapu Bulu whilst also hitting common Minimize users such as Clefable, Chansey, and Alolan Muk.

* Knock Off hits Aegislash, which would otherwise wall Kartana, while also hitting Psychic-types such as Cresselia and removing important items such as Porygon2's Eviolite.

* Psycho Cut allows Kartana to hit Blaziken, Naganadel, Mega Venusaur, and Mega Gengar harder than any of its other options.

* Guillotine can be used as a fourth move to have a 30% shot of OHKOing a threat, but it's a very high-risk move that should usually only be used in emergencies.

* A Jolly nature is needed to both maximize the use of Choice Scarf and also outspeed other Choice Scarf users such as Tapu Lele, Garchomp, and Blacephalon.

* Kartana appreciates bulky partners such as Porygon2 and Tapu Fini to fall back on, as Kartana can be easily walled depending on what move it is locked into. A Fire-resistant or -immune Pokemon is appreciated, as Kartana sports a 4x Fire-type weakness, which it can't patch up by itself.

For both sets, I'd mention carrying a Fire-type resist as well, since even physical attackers such as Garchomp can crisp Kartana with Fire-type coverage, and Blaziken is a pretty huge problem in general.

As a general C&C rule, we can't assume that the reader is gonna read the entire analysis, so we're gonna need some more detail on Leaf Blade and Smart Strike on the Scarf set, even though its obvious.

I've used Kartana somewhat recently so I can take care of that. This has been sitting here for awhile so there's definitely stuff worth changing since the time this was first written. Comments in bold, consider this 1/1 after implementing this.

[OVERVIEW]

Kartana has proven to be one of the metagame's most threatening physical attackers, boasting a huge attack but rather weak move options, good typing with strong defense, and decent speed tier. Beast boost goes a long way, only furthering Kartana's already impressive attack after it gets a KO. Kartana however has extremely poor special bulk, and is likely to get OHKOd by almost any neutral special move, and in some cases even resisted moves.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Leaf Blade
move 3: Smart Strike
move 4: Sacred Sword / Night Slash
item: Focus Sash / Grassium-Z / Fightinium-Z / Darkinium-Z / Life Orb I'd change this to Grassium Z / Fightinium Z / Darkinium Z / Focus Sash.
Darkinium Z is actually more common than any of the other items but that's obviously only used with Night Slash whereas Sacred Sword is used with any other item.

ability: Beast Boost
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Swords Dance is the focus of the set, allowing Kartana to boost its already immense attack stat to assist in breaking bulkier Pokemon.

* Leaf Blade is Kartana's strongest Grass-type STAB move, hitting bulky waters such as Suicune, Tapu Fini and Mamoswine whilst also hitting Garchomp for neutral damage. This sentence implies Mamoswine is a bulky Water, I'd reword this a bit. Not sure hitting Garchomp for neutral damage is necessarily worth mentioning either since all of Kartana's moves do that.

* Smart Strike has great all round coverage hitting Fairy, Ice and Rock-types and can hit the occasional Minimize Clefable and Alolan-Muk.

* Sacred Sword can be used to hit Hydreigon and Steel-type Pokemon such as Ferrothron, Magnezone, (missing conjunction) opposing Kartana while Night Slash provides coverage for Aeigslash and hits Psychic-types such as Cresselia harder.

* The given spread with a Jolly nature is ideal for Kartana to perform the role as a fast wallbreaker I'd quickly mention that this is important for outspeeding stuff like Garchomp.

* Focus Sash ensures that Kartana can setup Swords Dance especially against dedicated special attackers, as even neutral special moves can threaten to OHKO Kartana. Grassium-Z turn Leaf Blade into a 175 base power move, letting Kartana temporarily patch up its weak physical movepool and hit much harder. Fightinium-Z lets Kartana break threats when at +2 such as Skarmory and Celesteela. Darkinium-Z does the same thing at +2 but against different pokemon including Aegislash, Cresselia and Mega-Metagross. Life Orb gives Kartana more power to help justiy its weak movepool but at the cost of Focus Sash or a Z-move. Just a reminder to cut out the Life Orb bit since I don't think it's worth slashing in the set here. Also probably just make the Focus Sash sentence its own bullet point after the Z-moves.

* Suffering from a relatively awkward speed tier, Kartana appreciates a Choice Scarf partner to help gain some speed control. Kartana's horrible special bulk also highly suggests a bulky partner to take hits. A Fire-type resist is also greatly appreciated, as Kartana carries a 4x weakness and is able to get OHKOd even by a physical Fire-type move. Consider Pokemon such as heatran. I don't disagree with anything mentioned here but something about how these points reads feels off. Maybe reword it a bit.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Leaf Blade
move 2: Smart Strike
move 3: Night Slash
move 4: Sacred Sword
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Beast Boost
nature: Jolly I want to say Adamant is also viable here but I don't have experience with it.
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Leaf Blade remains as the STAB Grass-type option of choice, hitting bulky Water-type Pokemon and common Ground-types such as Mamoswine, Hippowdon, and Garchomp for neutral damage. Cross set referencing is frowned upon in normal analyses so I'd change "remains as" to avoid that connotation. Same bit about Garchomp here.

* Smart Strike is Kartana's strongest Steel-type STAB, able to OHKO Tapu Lele and Tapu Bulu if using Life Orb or Fightinium-Z, whilst also hitting common Minimize Pokemon such as Clefable and Alolan-Muk. Scarf set so the stuff about other items shouldn't be here.

* Night Slash provides coverage for hitting Aegislash which would otherwise wall Kartana, while also hitting Psychic-types such as Cresselia

* Scared Sword hits Steel-types for super effective damage such as Ferrothorn and Magnezone while also hitting Hydreigon and opposing Kartana The "such as Ferrothorn and Magnezone" bit should come after Steel-types.

* A Jolly nature is needed to both maximise the use of Choice Scarf and also outspeed other Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Tapu Lele and Garchomp

* Kartana appreciates bulky partners such as Porygon2 and Tapu Fini to fall back on, as Kartana can be easily walled depending on what move it is locked in to. A Fire-type resist or immunity is appreciated, as Kartana sports a 4x Fire-type weakness which it can't patch up by itself.

Thanks Psynergy, I'll add in these changes asap

Edit: All changes have been made, except
  • Adamant on scarf set (not too sure of this myself either)
  • Rewording (not sure how else to say that i suppose)

I'd tone down the preview a bit. Kartana is good, but it usually sticks around the #40s in usage, partly because most of its coverage is rather low BP.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move 1: Swords Dance
move 2: Leaf Blade
move 3: Sacred Sword
move 4: Smart Strike / Night Slash / Psycho Cut / Giga Impact
item: Fightingium Z / Focus Sash / Darkium Z / Normalium Z / Grassium Z
ability: Beast Boost
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

I reordered the set. It's a bit tricky because Kartana uses a LOT of different Z moves viably.

[SET COMMENTS]

* Swords Dance is the focus of the set, allowing Kartana to boost its already immense attack stat to assist in breaking bulkier Pokemon.

* Leaf Blade is Kartana's strongest Grass-type STAB move, hitting bulky waters such as Suicune and Tapu Fini whilst also giving it great damage on Ground-type targets such as Mamoswine, Garchomp and Hippowdon.

* Smart Strike has great all round coverage hitting Fairy, Ice and Rock-types and can hit the occasional Minimize Clefable and Alolan-Muk.

* Sacred Sword can be used to hit Hydreigon and Steel-type Pokemon such as Ferrothron, Magnezone and opposing Kartana while Night Slash provides coverage for Aeigslash and hits Psychic-types such as Cresselia harder.

I think Sacred Sword is too important to give up due to hitting Steel-types, so maybe reorder the sentence a bit and give Sacred Sword its own line instead of Smart Strike. Psycho Cut is here to hit Blaziken hard on the switch + deal more damage to Mega Venusaur, and Giga Impact is only to be used with Normalium Z.

* The given spread with a Jolly nature is ideal for Kartana to perform the role as a fast wallbreaker, outspeeding Garchomp, Non Choice Scarf Tapu Lele and Non Choice Scarf Hydreigon.

* Grassium-Z turn Leaf Blade into a 175 base power move, letting Kartana temporarily patch up its weak physical movepool and hit much harder. Fightinium-Z lets Kartana break threats when at +2 such as Skarmory and Celesteela. Darkinium-Z does the same thing at +2 but against different pokemon including Aegislash, Cresselia and Mega-Metagross.

* Focus Sash ensures that Kartana can setup Swords Dance especially against dedicated special attackers, as even neutral special moves can threaten to OHKO Kartana.

This is gonna be tricky. I'd talk about Fightium Z (deals massive damage to Celesteela after a boost and blasts Porygon2), Darkium Z (Z-Night Slash has good neutral coverage and it wrecks Cresselia), Focus Sash (you know what that does), Normalium Z (Z-Giga Impact allows Kartana to break stuff it normally can't such as Charizard. It also lets +2 Kartana bust through Mega Blaziken's Protect, meaning it can't revenge you if its weakened which is really cool), Grassium Z (you already covered this).

I'd mention Mega Charizard Y as well since it has a fighting resist.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf

move 2: Sacred Sword
move 3: Smart Strike
move 4: Night Slash / Psycho Cut / Guillotine
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Beast Boost
nature: Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

* Leaf Blade is the STAB Grass-type option of choice, hitting bulky Water-type Pokemon and common Ground-types such as Mamoswine and Hippowdon.

* Smart Strike is Kartana's strongest Steel-type STAB, able to OHKO Tapu Lele and Tapu Bulu if using Life Orb or Fightinium-Z, whilst also hitting common Minimize Pokemon such as Clefable and Alolan-Muk. Do you mean "If they aren't carrying Focus Sash" or specific sets? I mean, this is a Choice Scarf set after all, Kartana can't run Life Orb :P. I'd mention Chansey under Minimize as well.

* Night Slash provides coverage for hitting Aegislash which would otherwise wall Kartana, while also hitting Psychic-types such as Cresselia.

* Scared Sword hits Steel-types such as Ferrothorn and Magnezone for super-effective damage while also hitting Hydreigon and opposing Kartana.

I'd mention Psycho Cut. It does mean you're walled by Aegislash (granted, King's Shield means Scarf doesn't do too hot against that anyways), but it lets you hit Mega Blaziken and Mega Venusar hard. Especially nice if you hit Blaziken on the switch, since Choice Scarf Kartana outspeeds.

* Ah yes we gotta mention Guillotine. It's a super risky move, but it can be a good last ditch effort to sneak out a win if you need to KO Pokemon that wall Kartana.

* A Jolly nature is needed to both maximise the use of Choice Scarf and also outspeed other Choice Scarf Pokemon such as Tapu Lele and Garchomp.
