The Tale Of A Man And His Psyduck! - VGC 2012 Ft. Wayne, IN Warstory
The Tale of a Man and His Psyduck. So we start off a couple months back. Rules are officially announced so I start working on teams. My original team was working somewhat well but I was bored so I started creating teams to have fun. I started off with making a Mono-Normal team which was based around Tauros. It was successful from time to time but just would not cut it. I then proceeded to make a Mono-Water team which was rain based. Then, one day, I told my friend in real life that I had to tutor a kid in Pokémon. He then texted me back with, “l0llll goodluck man. Remember….psyduck is the best.” This got the gears in my head turning. I immediately opened up PO and started building a team around Psyduck, a team that would prove to be very mighty. It was edited along the way to accompany some more Pokémon to help with the team. So, let’s take a look at the team: CO♥ (Psyduck) (F) @ Choice Specs http://sprites.pokecheck.org/i/054.gif Trait: Swift Swim IVs: 31/3/31/30/31/31 EVs: 6 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Psychic - Ice Beam - Hydro Pump - Hidden Power [Electric 70] Notes: Psyduck is the main attraction of the team. It has Specs and Modest to hit as hard as possible and Swift Swim so it can out speed the majority of non-scarfed Pokémon. Hydro Pump is your main move since you are in rain, just be wary of missing. HP Electric is for Gyarados, Empoleon, and the likes. The other moves are for coverage. Solace (Poliwrath) (F) @ Fighting Gem http://sprites.pokecheck.org/i/062.gif Trait: Swift Swim IVs: 31/31/31/8/31/31 EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk) - Protect - Waterfall - Earthquake - Brick Break Notes: Poliwrath is to be used as a counter for Ferrothorn, Tyranitar, and the likes. It has STAB Brick Break with Max Attack and Fighting Gem to hit as hard as possible. The gem is so you can still protect and change up moves instead of using a Choice Band. SeaJason (Seaking) (M) @ Life Orb http://sprites.pokecheck.org/s/119.gif Trait: Lightningrod IVs: 31/31/31/31/31/31 EVs: 6 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd Jolly Nature (+Spd, -SAtk) - Protect - Megahorn - Waterfall - Horn Drill Notes: Seaking is to be mainly used as an Electric Move Switch-In. With Lightningrod it soaks up Electric Attacks and can do some decent damage. Horn Drill is there for evan and if nothing else can handle what you’re facing. Sadly was not used along with Plusle. Jio (Politoed) (M) @ Leftovers http://sprites.pokecheck.org/i/186.gif Trait: Drizzle IVs: 31/29/31/31/31/31 EVs: 252 HP / 6 Def / 252 SDef Calm Nature (+SDef, -Atk) - Scald - Protect - Ice Beam - Focus Blast Notes: Politoed is not dead-weight on this team like others. True, its sole purpose is to get the rain up, but it is invested with Max HP and SDef so that it can tank hits and dish out some extra damage which may be needed. It has leftovers to improve to survivability of Politoed so it can get off an extra move, where with another item it would be 2HKO’d. moof♥ (Ludicolo) (M) @ Focus Sash http://sprites.pokecheck.org/i/272.gif Trait: Swift Swim IVs: 31/31/31/31/31/31 EVs: 6 HP / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk) - Scald - Ice Beam - Giga Drain - Rain Dance Notes: Ludicolo is very important. With a Focus Sash and Rain Dance, you are ensured to get up the rain against other weathers. It also has good coverage moves and high SAtk, so it can deal out some strong hits. Unreality (Plusle) (M) @ Electric Gem http://sprites.pokecheck.org/s/311.gif Trait: Plus IVs: 31/30/30/31/31/31 EVs: 6 HP/ 252 SAtk / 252 Spd Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk) - Encore - Protect - Discharge - Hidden Power [Ice 70] Notes: Plusle is here mainly as a filler. It is to be used with Seaking so it can discharge away without having to worry about damaging Seaking so the fish can attack as well. Encore to force other Pokémon to continually use Protect or do another Non-Damaging move and Hidden Power Ice for coverage. Sadly was not used along with Seaking. Now that you have seen the team, it is time to bring you to the event: We left for Ft. Wayne on Saturday afternoon and arrived around 5 o’clock PM. We then settled into the hotel and waited for my Aunt and Uncle to pick us up for dinner since they live in Ft. Wayne. After dinner, we get back to the room and I get on IRC some. I talk with evan and a few others before going to sleep. I didn’t sleep very well. The howling wind and people yelling in the halls at 4 o’clock in the morning did not help. Finally it is a respectable time to get up so I do and take a shower. I get everything packed up and head off to the center where Regional’s will be held. When I get there I walk to where the event is, and register. While on the way to get my DS “zapped” to lock my pokes in the Battle Box, I see evan and pat him on the back to acknowledge him. After I get my Pokémon locked in the Battle Box I go over to where evan is and just try to stay with him before I get warmed up to everyone else. We waited around a bit until the first pairings were listed, and thus began the Epic Tale of a Man and His Psyduck. Round 1 vs. Brett (Did not write down his last name.) Brett was a very chill guy. We talked and related and got started into our match.
R1 vs. Brett
Round 2 vs. Luke Swenson (tad38, theamericandream38) This next round I was just like: BS Match-Up Hax… Also BS No Scald Burns/Focus Miss/No Power Whip Miss Hax. Vid No. 47-20618-48152
R2 vs. tad38
Round 3 vs. Christopher Hough (40 year old man) My least favorite opponent, just because he gave me crap about taking notes for this war story during our match. Note: Around when I no longer state how much damage the moves did is when he said don’t take notes and started raising his hand. Fearing he would ‘tattle’ on me, I tried to keep my note- taking to a minimum. Also, I made sure to ask the rest of my opponents if they were ok with me taking notes, all of which had no problem.
R3 vs. Christopher
Round 4 vs. Chris Wiley (IceKingz/Shiny Regice) Cool Guy altogether. Should’ve picked up from Team Preview that he was running TR, but only realized when his Pokémon were slower than mine. Also apparently my note taking skills went down the drain as I no longer record how much each move did, just what moves were used. He told me he was on Smogon but basically did more of lurking and wasn’t active.
R4 vs. IceKingz/Shiny Regice
Round 5 vs. Chance Nauman Younger kid, thought Scald always burned since there was some hax. Not much else to say.
R5 vs. Chance
Round 6 vs. Miroslawa Morioka Older woman, probably in her 40s. I felt kind of bad when Psyduck finally shined and started sweeping her…
R6 vs. Miroslawa
Round 7 vs. Michael Yergin Not much to say about this guy. Seemed younger like low twenties maybe, but did not seem like a person that would be married like he said he was.
R7 vs. Michael
In Conclusion: All-in-all, I was content. I had already improved from 3-4 last year at Nationals in the “Easy-Mode Seniors Division” and just went 5-2 in Masters with a PSYDUCK! Sadly, it was time to leave already since we had to get back home for school tomorrow. I said goodbye to all of the others before the big picture of everyone standing. It was a good and fun time and my only regret is not talking more to everyone before the event started. Since it was a bunch of new people I didn’t know yet, I was a bit hesitant to talk to them for whatever reason and just tried to stay around evan since we already knew each other. It was a great showing in my opinion and I already have something planned for Nationals, so you all better watch out! Anyway, let’s get to people who deserve honorable mention: Cassie- Very nice and supportful. Supplied me with the Plusle which I never got the opportunity to use. Was also the very trusty Psyduck that only missed TWO Hydro Pumps that day. Also a ton more but I can’t remember and fit it all in, so on to more people. Charzaro- Another strong showing from a strong, yet unknown player at RI. Helped with some teambuilding and other stuff. Cybertron- Another fellow Seniors Friend/Supporter. DeagleBeagle- Thanks for supplying your rules which I didn’t follow and did not need to succeed in VGC. You are a very smart user. Also, Water is a perfectly acceptable Primary Attacking Type. Duy- Didn’t make the cut for the team because I forgot about him. A good motivator and helped with other stuff. Eiganjo- You are a savior. Supplied DW parents and some others. Definitely the main supporter of the team in a sense since it was practically his Pokémon on the team even though they were technically mine since I RNG’d them on my game with my OT/ID. evan- The reason for bringing Horn Drill. Also my Friendly Rival ever since VGC 2011 since he wouldn’t play my Nats team and still hasn’t played me to date. I’m coming for you…. Huy- Helped with some teambuilding like the Seaking and supplied the Seaking. Hopefully you’ll come to Nats. Jibaku- Gave me positive support and feedback as well. I forget what else. Jio- Was the trusty Politoed and made a strong showing at RI. Helped a lot with Testing and some teambuilding with countering weaknesses and such. A book-smart player if you ever need one with lots of potential. JRank- Deserves mention even though he didn’t do too much for me this year. Helped with some Wi-Fi testing. Gave support and feedback. Helped with some small stuff that I can’t remember at the moment. muffinhead- Was the much-needed Ludicolo for Rain Dance and damage. Also supplied the Ludicolo and gave positive support/feedback. Solace- Thrown in this jumble of thanks. It might have been her to suggest Poliwrath which was much needed unless it was Jio. Unreality- Another fellow Senior Friend/Supporter. Also helped with some testing on Wi-Fi. If I left anyone out on accident WHO HAS A LEGITMATE REASON to be on the list, please let me know. Props: -Going 5/2 -Getting 14th -Using Psyduck -Meeting cool people -Choosing to go to VGC after being hesitant at first. Slops: -No Top Cut :( -Not getting to see any Senior friends this time around -Having Opponents that didn’t do so well barring tad and Shiny Regice dropping my Opp’s Win % down the drain. If I think of anything else later I will edit it in. Sorry no picture this time unlike Nats. There were just no pictures really taken. I hope you all enjoyed and look forward to seeing you at Nats and writing that Warstory. Good day to you ladies and gents. |

Anyway I loved that you followed through with this team and I'm honored to have the amazing duck named after me :3 |
Jigglypuff approves of using old school method(Wish I had a pic or stamp for this, I need to make >.>)
Anyway I love the team :D I love old school concepts :D |
Strongest Psyduck! Great seeing you again abc###. I'm kind of angry that your Psyduck team did better than mine but i still have April regionals to fix that. See you at nats???
|
Your team makes me excited.
Inspiration achieved! |
I loved your psyduck, strong pokemon. Good job on going 5-2 with such a sweet team. Hope to see you again at nats!
|
heh very nice team. congrats on 5-2!
|
my gimmick was topped
|
I'm semi active Alphabet either way it was great playing against you and that Psyduck was pretty neat to see. Also I'm IceKingz, I COMPLETELY spaced and forgot that my Smogon username is Shiny Regice lol but everywhere else I go by IceKingz =P
|
Plusle is too strong . congrats
|
Nice warstory. Writing down notes is perfectly legal during battle. Even if your opponent calls over a judge, you aren't breaking any rules. Still, it's a nice gesture to ask your opponents beforehand if they mind the note taking.
|
First a story on a team with Pikachu and now Psyduck? 0_o Anyways it was fun reading this, congratz man! :)

Thanks everyone.
@Huy: Your gimmick was still superior. @Team Rocket Elite: I know it was fine, and even if it wasn't that doesn't make sense since you can save the battle AND there is a Play Back feature now which shows your last match. Either way I didn't want to risk it so I just asked the rest of my opponents. @Shiny Regice: I actually had on my notes "IceKingz" written down. However when I went to look on the Smogon user list I only found Ice King so I thought I interpreted what you said wrong. Anyway, I will probably post a Battle Video Number soon to the match I had against tad38 since that was the one I saved and will put up a Special Thanks acknowledging people and a conclusion hopefully later tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for all of your support, and I hope to see some of you at Nationals. |

These tournaments let us take notes during battle, although during VGC 11 we weren't allowed to.
|
Oh yeah, the VGC website took me to the '11 rules. Oops. Um, are they going to bother updating?
|
Finally got around to the conclusion. Thanks for all the support to you who've read this and/or posted.
|
YES MADE PROPS
Way to go though, this team is incredible (like all of your teams) and props to you for doing so well with it :D See you in Indy? |
awesome job dude! but can I ask what made you choose psyduck? it seem like there would be other much better options, or does it not matter as long as they have swift swim and specs in the rain?
and just so you know I love your team!!!! |
more like a kid just getting into puberty and his psyduck
|
haha, thanks for the props, even though I didnt do much but provide the stuff you needed.
anyways I think its always nice to see someone do well with a team such as yours :D looking forward to the nats one, and I hope you make it to worlds :P |

@JuiceBox112: I thought I made it clear in the warstory but I'll say it again. I chose Psyduck because my friend jokingly said Psyduck is the best. Since he said this I drafted up a team with Psyduck and found out it is highly underestimated. As to the rest of you: Yes, I am pretty sure I will be at Nationals at this point in time. |
