Smogon Shoddy Server Statistics - December 2009
Not a lot of stunning revelations this month in stat-land -- at least nothing really stands out to me after a quick comparison to the previous month. In OU, the top Pokemon pretty much stayed the same. Down a little lower in the list, it looks like Starmie and Jolteon were the only movers of consequence, and their statistical change was nothing earth-shattering. Perhaps OU has finally "settled down", and will experience low volatility in the coming months.
Down at the bottom of OU, Heracross usage increased slightly, perhaps staving off the much-debated "Heracross in UU Adventure" for a little while longer. Cresselia, on the other hand, dropped this month and appears to be hovering very close to the UU event horizon. We'll see what happens when X-Act runs his tiering numbers. Stay tuned. Overall server traffic increased dramatically last month; probably because many people were on break from school and had lots of time to spend playing our favorite game. The server jumped by more than 54,000 battles, and almost set a new traffic record for a single month. For the entire calendar year 2009, the server hosted 4,823,841 battles. That's a staggering amount of battles when you think about it. I may run some yearly stat reports later on, just for the heck of it. Now that I finally released the Smogon Damage Calculator (which almost completely consumed my free time for the past few months), I'm free to work on some other stuff. I've always had a penchant for useless stats, so end-of-year reports are right up my alley. I suspect a few of you other stat junkies would be interested too! These stats were gathered from 531,307 individual battles that were fought during the month of December on the Smogon Shoddy Battle Server. Usage and Leads are listed in the posts directly below this one. Happy stat hunting! -------------------------------------

Thanks Doug!
| Tyranitar | Item | Choice Scarf | 12.9 | Made quite a big jump. |
Thanks Doug :) I use these so much.
I don't know exactly where the UU cutoff is, but Porygon-z and Cresselia! |
No Heracross in UU... i'm glad.
This thing would be so broken there... Espeon in NU will dominate there, making Skuntank a need on basically every team Tyranitar is being really used even with Scizors everywhere. I guess it's thanks to Latias/Rotom, huh... |
Thanks once again Doug.
| 14 | Starmie | 100911 | 12.30 | Looks like people finally understood how good Starmie is in this metagame, whether is with LO or a Support set. |
I've been using an expert belt jolteon a lot, I think it's a really effective poke. It will probably never be a top tier poke though because well.. it's a special attacker without trick/explosion. Still a great gyrados/rotom counter.
|
Excellent... at least heracross managed to go up and stay out of UU.
Also This month: 2 | Salamence | 175224 | 21.35 | Last month: | 2 | Salamence | 152911 | 20.95 | He's rising D: |
Looks like all Muk leads this month was because of me lol
It is a good lead, i can guarantee that. Qwilfish in UU? |
Tyranitar on the 3rd spot...wow he did indeed gain quite a bi of usage
For UBER...too much has changed. With Garchomp and Latios going up, Palkia and Dialga gaining quite a bit of usage as well...while others such as Mewtwo and Ho-oh losing usage |
Woah! Venusaur's usage has risen a load again!
And thanks for the stats! |
Gallade down at number 11?
| 11 | Gallade | 13452 | 12.39 | Given his suspect status I naturally assumed he was being used more than that. |

And it seems that Magneton, and its counterpart, Electrode are now NU. It's probably because of Raikou this has happened. But this means that Sneasel, Floatzel and Persian are no longer the fastest in NU. |
Here are the changes in the OU Top 50:
Jolteon +4 Zapdos +3 Kingdra +3 Tentacruel +3 Mamoswine +3 Magnezone +2 Heracross +2 Dragonite +2 Skarmory +2 Starmie +2 Tyranitar +1 Crobat +1 Breloom +1 Empoleon +1 Electivire +1 Infernape +1 Snorlax +1 Gyarados 0 Bronzong 0 Salamence 0 Swampert 0 Jirachi 0 Gliscor 0 Gengar 0 Heatran 0 Weavile 0 Rotom-A 0 Ninjask 0 Metagross 0 Smeargle 0 Scizor 0 Umbreon 0 Porygonz 0 Roserade -1 Lucario -1 Suicune -1 Azelf -1 Machamp -1 Latias -1 Flygon -1 Alakazam -1 Blissey -1 Dusknoir -1 Aerodactyl -2 Cresselia -2 Vaporeon -3 Togekiss -3 Forretress -3 Hippowdon -4 Celebi -6 In terms of percentage, that is: Tyranitar +1.49 Starmie +1.23 Jolteon +1.16 Magnezone +0.85 Infernape +0.78 Zapdos +0.62 Gengar +0.59 Kingdra +0.56 Skarmory +0.53 Empoleon +0.44 Dragonite +0.43 Mamoswine +0.41 Salamence +0.4 Rotom-A+0.35 Azelf +0.33 Swampert +0.32 Weavile +0.31 Bronzong +0.29 Latias +0.25 Machamp +0.24 Suicune +0.22 Snorlax +0.21 Tentacruel +0.2 Heracross +0.16 Breloom +0.15 Smeargle +0.14 Heatran +0.1 Electivire +0.07 Ninjask +0.06 Jirachi +0.02 Crobat -0.08 Blissey -0.08 Umbreon -0.1 Scizor -0.11 Flygon -0.12 Roserade -0.12 Metagross -0.18 Aerodactyl -0.18 Togekiss -0.2 Dusknoir -0.2 Vaporeon -0.2 Gyarados -0.24 Alakazam -0.27 Porygonz -0.3 Cresselia -0.37 Forretress -0.41 Lucario -0.48 Hippowdon -0.59 Gliscor -0.65 Celebi -0.91 Tyranitar, Starmie, and Jolteon are the most notable risers, and Celebi, Gliscor, and Hippowdon the biggest losers. Overall, most of the Pokemon that increased in percentage were orientated around sweeping or providing support to sweepers, and overall, those that decreased in percentage were orientated about stalling or providing team support to stall, which I think denotes a further move away from stall and towards offense, especially teams using large amounts of mixed sweepers. However, the overall change wasn't particularly high, indicating we may be nearing the peak of the move towards offense, and soon the wave will break and the metagame will begin to move towards more stall. On a slightly more detailed levels, Magnezone usage is rising, which seems to be causing Scizor usage to fall. It may take a long time, but I think we're starting to see a wane in Scizor numbers, as he has fallen month on month for three months now, iirc. Possibly by this time next year either Rotom-A or Salamence (providing he hasn't been banned) will hold the top spot? |
I wonder if Hippowdon is slowly on his way into UU.
Great job with the stats as usual. |
Blissey's falling even more, huh.
It saddens me a bit that OU ladder is in state of stagnation, but i guess it was to be expected. |
With tyranitar going up in usage so much there probably is just not much need for hippowdon to provide sand.
|
Glad to see Porygon-Z has fallen. If he becomes UU he may finally have a use. I hope he does, he's always been one of my favorites.
|
I'm fairly sure PorygonZ will fall eventually. He's been on the line for some while now, and his usage is still falling. Now we just need Electivire to start falling. =/
I do miss the weighted stats from when we used the shoddybattle official server, though. It was fascinating, seeing the differences between the best players and the mediocre players. There were always a few Pokemon with massive differences between the two, mostly Rhyperior, Ninjask, Alakazam, Electivire, and PorygonZ if I remember rightly. |
Oh man. Porygon-Z and Cresselia in UU? That's gonna be nutters if it happens. A nuke and a bomb shelter entering UU lol.
|
| 23 | Dragonite | 65060 | 7.93 |
Dragonite has finally surpassed Kingdra and Flygon, giving it the title of 3rd most prestigious OU Dragon-type. This is no doubt due to Lead Dragonite, popularized by LR's warstory and team. I am not too surprised that Cresselia or Porygon-Z fell. UU will be having a hard time in the next coming months however =/ I mean really. Honchkrow gets banned just in time for Cresselia to come lol... |
Beautiful Doug. Thanks once again.
|
Thanks Doug. Porygon-z and Cresselia in UU, it's gonna be worse than Honchkrow
|
Thanks a lot Doug for the monthly stats.
I hate the fact OU is ''settling down''. It gets even more boring tbh. |
