Smogon Shoddy Server Statistics - January 2010
The top OU pokemon juggled around a bit last month. Scizor dipped below 30% usage for the first time since August of last year. But it still remains the clear #1. Tyranitar jumped up and claimed the #2 spot from Salamence, even though Mence usage increased almost a full percentage point. Heatran also posted a big 2% increase in usage, claiming the fourth spot. Jirachi and Swampert were a couple other notable gainers that caught my eye. Rotom-A and Infernape are both dipping a bit.
The most interesting moves are over on the UU ladder, with Cresselia and Porygon-Z added to the tier on January 6th. If you prorate their usage across the entire month, Cresselia would have been 21.87% (1st place), and Pory-Z 19.66% (2nd place). Massive usage was forecasted from the outset, but those prorated numbers are considerably smaller than I expected. Based on feedback from battlers, I figured both pokemon would clock in higher than 25% each, and I thought Cresselia's prorated numbers would be higher than 30%. Considering that Scizor has had over 30% usage in OU on a regular basis, I thought Cressy would easily beat that. But, then again, this whole UU change has made me scratch my head quite a bit, so having strange stats is par for the course. At the very least, the numbers are interesting, and should spark a few discussions around here. These stats were gathered from 500,442 individual battles that were fought during the month of January on the Smogon Shoddy Battle Server. Usage and Leads are listed in the posts directly below this one. Happy stat hunting! -------------------------------------

Expected Swampert in the top 10, in the last few days I've run into almost endless teams with it in there.
Surprised at Tyranitar at #2 though over Salamence, though it's close. Thanks for the stats, Doug, always fun to look at. |
Soooo Dragonite's usage has been going down once again.
As for UBERs, I didn't expect Palkia's usage to go down :/ |
wow the gap bewteen the top 3 uu leads and the rest is impressive but quite expected really
|
Wow, Uxie is above the OU borderline this month. Also if things keep going like they are Porygon-Z and Cresselia might not be in UU for long.
|
Is anything happening to Heracross, or is it staying OU for now?
|
thanks for all the work you do Doug. these are pretty interesting
EDIT: is 45 or 50 the cutoff for OU? |
Neither. IIRC, OU is any Pokemon that will appear on average on 1 in 20 teams.
|
Suicune also gained a lot of usage.
It seems like the offensive Suicune is being used A LOT now. |

Hippowdon? Mamoswine? Tentacruel? etc. |
The formula for determining the OU tier is listed here:
http://www.smogon.com/articles/tiers |
| 2 | Mewtwo ...| 9228 | 37.84 |..| 5 | Mewtwo | 9323 | 34.12 |
| 5 | Rayquaza .| 8415 | 34.50 |..| 8 | Rayquaza | 7582 | 27.74 | | 9 | Wobbuffet | 6486 | 26.60 |. | 6 | Wobbuffet | 8580 | 31.40 | Mewtwo and Rayquaza jumped up three places each, while Wobbuffet dropped three. I see a lot of Ray, but I haven't seen all that many Mewtwo. And I wouldn't have guessed only 26.6% of teams had Wobb last month. Half of mine did! |
Man I'm suprised at the decrease from Ambipom (#14 overall) and the fact Tyranitar is 2# overall,
Not suprised at Swampert though ^.^ see alot of those, and all die to my jirachi of doom. |
Uxie has risen in Standard quite a bit!!
|
Also note that tier changes do not take place every month, so it is way too early to start talking about that.
|
I knew i was seeing more tyranitar
|
Tyranitar has found itself on many teams lately, including pretty much all of mine. :P
|
It seems that people love using Charizard on Unrated lol
Every month, Charizard is up there... Oh yeah, Slowbro fell quite a lot because of Cresselia. Same for Mesprit, who's going downhill. Damn. Hmm... poor Golduck. It needs more usage. Now with Encore, it makes a good anti weather poke. With CM, it's just like a frail Suicune. And Entei? The "worst" legendary doesn't deserve that. You won't believe how bulky this thing is with a max hp/max def spread, surviving even SE STAB hits from freaks like Azumarill, Rhyperior and even Rampardos. Makes a fine "Cro" set. On OU:I'm seeing lots of Scarf Tyranitars. Because it's able of revenging effectively many threats... time for Dugtrio to rise again? |
I'm quite impressed that Venusaur is still number one in UU. Even though Cresselia got added later in the month, I was almost certain it would beat Venusaur overall.
|
This is how much scarftar stall has stapled itself into this metagame.
Nice job Doug |
and now choice scarf is used on 22.7% of tyranitars. this is second place compared to leftovers 23.4%. this is causing a drop in latias and rotom. thank god the OU tier is starting to become less stagnant!!
also mewtwo #2 in ubers. call me crazy, but i think mewtwo will hit the number one slot within the next 2 months**. Quite possibly the best stall pokemon with taunt WoW light screen and recover, one of the best stall breakers with either trick or taunt, and a great wall breaker with sun + 3 attacks or explosion + 3 attacks mewtwo can fit on ANY team. ** people thought i was crazy when i said around 4 months ago that giratina would be a top 7 pokemon. 7th last month 8th this |
choice scarf ttar is up to 22%, creating a rise of swamperts. OU feels like a clusterfuck of the top 10-15 where if a new threat rises, they use the same pokes only with slightly different sets.
