I mean, Gen I introduced so many things which were staple for all fantasy RPG's: potions, ethethers, elixirs... Heck there was even a HEALING CIRCLE in lavender tower.
If you stop to think what those items actually ARE, they start to conflict with the image pokemons built for itself since those games with unique elements like berries and pikeblocks. The pokemon world is one of science and nature now, not the magic of other fantasy RPG's it was closer to at its begginings.

I think he meant mechanically, which I would buy. The original Pokemon was very much free-form. There wasn't much of a central plot. Hell, if you wanted to, you could get the badge from Fuschia before getting the one from Celadon. The game was exploring around and getting your Pokemon. As the games have gone on, they've started to get more and more significant plotlines, which follows the standard JRPG model. I'm personally hoping they take the next step after that, which is to change the plot based on your decisions.
