Smogon Shoddy Server Statistics - August 2008
This was a big month for Shoddy Server statistics. They were collected by parsing 248,774 individual battle logs. That's a sharp increase from last month. We also have an additional ladder to track - the Suspect Ladder. Unless you've been living under a rock, you know what the new ladder is all about. I also made some significant changes to the detailed statistics, but I'll cover that later. Let's get the basic usage stats out of the way, since that's what most people are interested in.

As for the detailed stats, the BIG change is that I now collect detailed stats separately for each ladder. It's a lot more information to present, but it eliminates some of the "noise" that was rampant at the lower end of the various stat categories. There are nine (9) other moves used by Meta, that are not listed specifically. Each of those nine moves are used 5.8% of the time or less. That 5.8% is actually the usage percentage of the most used move that was consolidated into Other. Zen Headbutt perhaps? We don't know for sure. I think this method of reporting for Other is preferable to the average percentage I reported last month. I'm confused
Why is there Darkrai and Mewtwo in the standard stats? along with other ubers? Also it would be awesome if you could have a "total number of logs" for each metagame so we can easily calculate percentages |

Can you do the 75% of OU calculations of Standard and Suspect? Or does X-Act handle that? It'll make it easier to judge if OU is significantly less centralized without Garchomp.
Also, when's CAP coming? There's another Uber debate going on in Little Cup that would like "real" stats. Hey look at Chomp's "overcentralization": Heatran and Jirachi are both MUCH more used on Suspect ladder. No surprise there. Magnezone's up too, Weavile is way down. Considering that the 3 listed colud be OHKOed by a Garchomp pretty easily and were all slower, perhaps there might be a correlation... One purpose of Weavile, as Grachomp revenger, being eliminated could have accounted for his drop too. Cresselia was used a lot less on Suspect too. Perhaps this is because Cresselia doesn't do much other than force things out and Thunder Wave, but Cresselia was the closest thing to "Garchomp counter" out there. It looks like if OU is the same size as last time, Aero just made it. So everyone whining about him (myself included) can shut up now! XD

I'm guessing the huge spike in Pory2 is in response to the increased usage of Salamence/Heatran on the Suspect ladder?

Also, possibly good news for UU. Because it is now the reigning fastest Taunt-SR user, Aerodactyl has found itself back in OU, at least on the Suspect Test ladder.
EDIT: In fact, it may be OU in BOTH metagames. Rejoice! EDIT 2: And just in time, too. Not only did it skyrocket to #7 most used in UU, but it also was the most common lead by an insane margin over Persian, the previous most common lead.

Crawdaunt usage is down from last month but it's still higher than stuff like Cradily, Parasect and Golem.
I guess since I didn't play UU at all this month that hurt it a bit. |

Dragonite +19 - People want a new Dragon type to use. Jirachi +19 - Lack of non-Ice Punch ways to hurt Chomp and Ground weakness might have hurt his viability in OU. Certainly wasn't Deoxys-S... Roserade +16 - Beaten by Chomp, just slower than Garchomp... Magnezone +14 - Ground weak, slower than Garchomp... Mamoswine +8 - That's odd... maybe people are replacing their Garchomp with other ground types? Heatran +6 - Ground weak, slower than Garchomp... Tyranitar +5 - This is a little odd... traditionally Tyranitar is seen as a helper to Chomp with Sand Veil. Then again, Garchomp can switch in on Stone Edges and SD up, with Sand Veil making it hell to hit him. Weavile -8 - Chomp revenge killer Cresselia -10 - One of the premier "counters" to Garchomp probably sees little to do in OU now other than Thunder Wave everything . This is pure speculation, as correlation doesn't guarantee causation, but only 2 variables changed here... A VERY significant chunk of ou shifted around, more than I'd expect for one Pokémon (metagames will shift no matter what when you add / subtract pokemon). Now we just need to find out how big the new Suspect OU is to see the full extent of Chomp (and Deoxys's?) damage.

not many played UU last month, so its hard to comment on, and i claim parasect useage :P
i used dragonite as the bulky garchomp replacement on suspect, and yes i have notaced mamoswines popping up everywhere, might have something to do with its Earthquake+ice shard combo though ;)

There is a total of 335618 pokemon used in the Suspect ladder (without Deoxys-e). So the 75% is 251713.5
This number let us know the suspect ladder OU: Quote:

Slightly surprising to see Azelf overtake Bronzong, but there were a load of them!
I also expected Suicune to get closer to the top 10. I think people can actually rely on sweeping with Dragon Dance Tyranitar now on Suspect, as two good Revenge Killers in Garchomp and Deoxys-S are absent. Heatran and Gengar are used so much anyway, they're just too good to pass up so I always expected them to climb in usage.

I believe Havak illustrated Tyranitar's expected increase perfectly. Without Garchomp, Tyranitar knows full-well that it can sweep teams here and there with those annoying Choice Scarf varients or you everyday Garchomp out of sight. Similarily, Deoxys-S' absense also means that revenge-killing a Tyranitar that's increasing its Attack and Speed with Dragon Dance has become an extremely difficult task.
Gliscor's impressive position is an eye-catcher. I suspect this unexpected increase may have something to do with the fact that Salamence and Lucario's popular is arising even further since Garchomp's influencial departure. Despite the rare Choice Specs moveset every now and then, Salamence's most recognised and used set is the bulky, Life Orb, Dragon Dancing menace. Gliscor can Toxic or Ice Fang (albeit the latter cannot OHKO, and Roost cancels out the Flying-type so Salamence can continue to set-up either way) Salamence. A common response to Lucario was Garchomp, but seeing as how Garchomp's presense is not found within the Suspect metagame, some weight has been lifted Lucario's shoulders. So perhaps Gliscor's popularity arose when Lucario stood out as possibly 'the' threat of the metagame. Who knows?

suspect seems to be brinig in more or less the same team over and over.
cant see how azelf is top lead though, i saw so many zongs comapred to azelf its rediculous, and i dont think i saw many Ttar leads either. i would be interested to have a ninjask lead comparison to last month due to the mass azelf/deoxys leads being used, (decent counter as is yanmega)

A couple people tried Gabite on the Suspect ladder, wow.
I didn't realize Yanmega was such a popular lead. Only 4.7% of them were Tinted Lens, and the C. Specs version was reallllly underused. Tinted Lens+C. Specs is a lot better than people think. Try it out! am I the only one using gastrodon? :(

You may notice that some of the detail stats cannot add up to 100%. This is because I removed any values that had less than 1%, in order to try to clean up the noise in the Other consolidations. I made a mistake by not recomputing new percentages after the noise was removed. I will fix it for next month. Because the total noise on most categories is usually no more than 1%-2%, it's not a very big deal. But, if you happen to notice it -- now you know why!
