Iron Maiden:
Iron Maiden (1980)
Killers (1981)
The Number of the Beast (1982)
Piece of Mind (1983)
Powerslave (1984)
Somewhere in Time (1986)
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son (1988)

^
Those are the essentials for studio albums

(Optional After Having those)

The X Factor (1995)
Brave New World (2000)
Dance of Death (2003)
A Matter of Life and Death (2006)

As far as individual songs go, get the live version of "Fear of the Dark", from Iron Maiden's A Real Live One / A Real Live Dead One.

Lamb of god is pretty damn heavy, I read an interview of them and that got me interested enough. The only two albums I really like of theres is ashes of the wake and sacrement. They are threatning to release an album next year (2011)cant wait...
System of a Down's lyrics don't make me laugh, I'm sorry. A couple of times I've laughed during some metal songs, would be S.O.D.'s Speak English or Die.

Lamb of God, doesn't interest me. You want heavy? I'm not the biggest Deicide fan, however their first two albums alone, crushes Lamb of God's discography.

Hallowed be thy Name is a good song, and probably my favorite song that Maiden does, and yet I still get bored during it. Not a single part of the band is exciting to me. The galloping basslines which everyone loves aren't interesting to me as an aspiring bass player, because they aren't fun to play along with. The guitars and vocals may be "pretty good", but they aren't anything to get excited about. When it all comes together, they might have some pretty cool songs, but when I start listening to them, I start to feel bored. Maybe they're better live..

Iron Maiden are one of the best live bands.

Absolutely nothing after Seventh Son. Even then, Killers, Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, and Somewhere in Time are not essential. Seventh Son has all good songs, but the least talented song playing of any of the early albums. Somewhere in Time was an attempt to do something different that failed badly. Killers was ruined by bad production/drugs I guess.

So Iron Maiden/Powerslave/Number of the Beast/Piece of Mind are all I recommend.

Do not touch anything except the song Fear of the Dark after their Seventh Son album, you will be wasting your time. All they do with their Dance of Death onward albums is do what they already did in the past worse. It is a fucking disgrace.

If you dislike any band with that strong a studio presence, then anything they did live is not going to change your mind...the guitar and vocals are absolutely special, you are just missing it.

I don't have a problem with explicit lyrics, I just find them a lot of the time idiotic. I have no problems with growls or harsh vocals, I just don't like Lamb of God. Sorry dude.

If you want to check out S.O.D., the Stormtroopers of Death, get Speak English or Die. Avoid their album after that.

system isn't really that explicit. I guess they might say the f-word a few too many times for the average person who just listens to fm radio all day, but I think the reason why most of the people in this thread who don't like System of a Down is because of general hatred of nu metal.

Have you guys heard cigaro and violent pornography by these guys now that shit is explicit if you ask me.
And dont apologize just cause you dont like a band :) haha
And I love meshuggah They are the only band I can hear for a long period of time with harsh vocals. And I was just giving my opinion, not trying to convince anyone to listen to either of the bands.
Will cheak out that album and let ya know how it goes...

That's not necessarily true. I like some nu metal bands but even then SoD fails to impress me.

Brave New World is actually my favourite Iron Maiden album =/
I will admit though that that's just me and the early stuff still is the best. Dance of Death does have one or two gems though (PASCHENDALE!!!)
And Hallowed Be Thy Name is an amazing song

Brave New World has some hidden gems on there. "Dream of Mirrors" and the opening song "The Wicker Man" are probably my favorites. There's a mix of a lot of average/boring long songs however. "Paschendale" is an amazing song by the way.

I'm going to point out right now that I think that most metalcore/deathcore/post-hardcore is the gayest music this side of rock and roll.

I've been listening mostly to Emperor, System of a Down, Hevein, Slayer, Marty Friedman, and Skindred (although their status as "metal is somewhat debatable) but am relatively open. Basically, very little -core and no doom. Doom metal really just doesn't interest me that much.

The Nomad is the best song on the album, just for the second solo.

Also, just listened to their new album, pretty cool imo. "Starblind" and "When The Wild Wind Blows" are my favourite songs right now.

Brave New World is just old Iron Maiden with worse talent and songwriting. There are no hidden gems, just lesser old Maiden songs.

I need more good Death Metal. As much as I love Adramelech, Behemoth, Bolt Thrower, Dismember, Immolation, and Rellik, they're wearing thin and I need more bands because, honestly, for a genre I love so much only having six bands is absolutely disgusting.

On a related note, I need more Black Metal that is closer to Dissection than Emperor.

Anthrax:
Fistful of Metal
Spreading the Disease
Among the Living

Celtic Frost:
Morbid Tales
To Mega Therion

Coroner:
R.I.P.
Punishment for Decadence
No More Color
Mental Vortex

Dark Angel:
We Have Arrived
Darkness Descends
Leave Scars

Megadeth:
Killing Is My Business... and Business Is Good!
Peace Sells... But Who's Buying?
So Far, So Good... So What!
Rust in Peace

(These next albums contain some thrash moments, then some of the others do not really contain many thrash moments.)
Opitional
Countdown to Extinction
Youthanasia
Cryptic Writings
The System Has Failed
Endgame

Metal Church: (they were around before thrash was really defined fully so its not a real distinct thrash sound.)
Metal Church
The Dark
Blessing in Disguise

Overkill:
Feel the Fire
Taking Over
Under the Influence
The Years of Decay
Horrorscope

(
Optional after you have heard those first five)
W.F.O.
Necroshine
Bloodletting
Killbox 13
Ironbound

Slayer: (I'm not the biggest Slayer fan)
Show No Mercy
Haunting the Chapel
(EP)
Hell Awaits

Sodom:
In the Sign of Evil (EP)
Obsessed by Cruelty
Expurse of Sodomy (EP)
Persecution Mania
Agent Orange
Ausgebombt
(EP)
Better Off Dead
Tapping the Vein

^Thrash Metal. I don't care much for progressive metal. Speed Metal is always debated on if it is a genre. My assumption would just be heavy metal songs that are fast-paced.

Skyclad. Check out Prince of the Poverty Line.

I've given out thrash recs like three times in this thread and so have other people, so.

As far as Prog metal though I suggest Nevermore (who are fairly thrashy, especially on their first two albums).
