Introduction

Welcome, trainers, to Smogon's Anime Style Battling (ASB) League! Here we strive to make a welcoming, fun, and challenging game for you to enjoy as a spectator or, hopefully, a participant. Some of you might be familiar with other Anime Style Battling Leagues, and our system tries to replicate a lot of those elements. Pokemon can learn any move in their movepool from any generation with no egg combination or other restrictions.

There are however some key differences from other leagues. The ASB incorporates stats, abilities, and hold items into battle. While stats have been crafted in such a way to normalize performance, hard statistical differences are used in battle calculations. Each Pokemon also has access to all their abilities, although multiple battle styles are supported. There is a strong emphasis in ASB on raising individual Pokemon over expanding the size of a team. Rather than each Pokemon starting with all its possible moves, the Pokemon must expand its movepool over time through battling or role playing in the forum.

This thread will serve as a quick guide on how to get started in ASB, as well as an overview on some fundamental mechanics of ASB.

Your Profile:

The first step on getting started in ASB is to create a trainer profile, which will keep a record of your counters, battles, items, and Pokemon. This section will provide an overview of what needs to be included in your profile. Here is a template of a profile:

Template

The first section of your profile will list your Trainer Name, the species names of all of your Pokemon, and your Win/Loss/Tie record. Your Trainer Name can be just about anything. Many people use their forum name, but that doesn't mean you have to. Note that you don't need to keep a W/L/T record, but it can be helpful to do so.

Backpack:
Every trainer has a backpack! Your backpack allows you to carry game items. New trainers start with a generous package of two (2) each of Oran, Leppa, Cheri, Chesto, Pecha, Rawst, and Aspear berries to be placed in their Berry Pocket. You don't start with any other items, but as you go along in ASB you'll be able to purchase more items.

There is also a pocket for counters, where you keep track of the main two types of counters in ASB: Currency Counters and Universal Counters.

Currency Counters
can be used to purchase new Pokemon and items for battles and Roleplays.

Universal Counters
are counters recieved as payment for reffing battles, Roleplays, and other matches. They can be used to increase Currency Counters for the trainer or the EC, MC, or DC of a particular Pokemon (these will be explained in a later section).

Battle Slots:
Because you can only be in a max of 3 [non-RP] battles at a time, it's necessary that you keep a list of the battles you're currently in. This section can also be used to list any tournament matches, roleplaying matches, or gym matches that you're currently in so that they can be found easier. Many trainers also keep a record of their past battles in their profile, though this isn't required.

Pokemon Team:
This is where you list everything about your Pokemon! Exactly what needs to be listed will be explained in depth below.

Choosing Starting Pokemon:

Before you start battling, you will need to choose your starting Pokemon. You have 6 CC (Currency Counters) to start off with. Each Pokemon has their own stats and rarity value, listed below, that you can use CC to buy; rarity listings and stats can also be found here in the Data Audit Thread as well. Trainers can only purchase the lowest evolved form of a Pokemon line. The rarity point listing is the cost in CC to obtain that Pokemon. Stronger Pokemon naturally have higher ratings. Smeargle's Rarity Rating is 3, but it cannot be used as a starting Pokemon. The cost of single stage Pokemon is added by 3 if it's not a starter. Note that you don't have to spend all 6 CC right away if you don't want to. You can put the remaining CC away in your profile to use later.

Our ASB league includes the Pokemon created in our CAP (Create-A-Pokemon) project. To learn more, visit the CAP section of our website here.

Rarity Listing:
First Gen Pokemon
Second Gen Pokemon
Third Gen Pokemon
Fourth Gen Pokemon
Fifth Gen Pokemon
CAP Originated Pokemon

Note: You cannot purchase any Pokemon not in the rarity listing.

Stat Listing:
Here is a stat listing of all possible starter Pokemon. Use Control+F to find the Pokemon you're looking for.
Generation 1 Stat Listing

Generation 3 Stat Listing
Generation 4 Stat Listing
Generation 5 Stat Listing

Special Cases:
Some Pokemon are special cases and must be handled separately. They are Unown, Smeargle, Shedinja, Rotom, Tynamo, and Necturine/Necturna.. If you don't plan on purchasing any of these Pokemon and are just getting started in ASB, feel free to skip this section.

Unown
Smeargle
Shedinja
Rotom
Tynamo
Necturine / Necturna

Your Pokemon:

This section will detail what's required to list on each Pokemon that you own. A typical Pokemon will look like the following:

Sunkern

Each Pokemon in your profile should have a sprite, which can be custom within reason. You can easily find sprites on sites like Bulbapedia and Veekun. The next line should have the Species name of your Pokemon, followed by its nickname (if you choose to give it one), and its gender.

Nature:
Natures have slightly different effects in ASB than ingame. Because ASB uses a rank system to normalize stats (other than HP and Speed), natures change the ranks of a Pokemon instead of their stats. A full description of how natures affect stats in ASB can be found here. Take note of the extra effects that Speed boosting and Speed lowering natures have on a Pokemon.

Here is a list of natures:
Nature List

Type:
Like ingame, Pokemon are given a boost when their type matches the type of move they're using. In ASB, the energy cost of a move a Pokemon has STAB on is decreased by 1. Damaging moves that a Pokemon has STAB on are also increased by 3 BAP. However, ASB also gives types specific bonuses as well, described here. Your Pokemon should have the summary of their types listed in their details.

Abilities:
In ASB, some abilities are given slightly different effects than ingame. You can find a list of all abilities here, which gives a description of each ability's effect and which Pokemon have them. These ability descriptions must be listed in the details of your Pokemon.

The plural "Abilities" is used even if the Pokemon only has one Ability. Ability names start being entered one line below and are bolded. A Pokemon's Dream World ability is marked with (DW). Before each ability, the way it is activated (Trait, Innate, Can be Enabled, Can be Disabled, and Can Be Activated) should be placed in parenthesis before it.

Stats:
The stats of your Pokemon must be listed in their details. When posting your Pokemon's stats, natures should be taken into account. A list of the stats of starter Pokemon can be found above. You can just copy and paste the stats found in the list above into your Pokemon's details.

This is the natural ranking list for stats (excluding Speed):

Rank 1: Base 0-25; 80 HP
Rank 2: Base 26-60; 90 HP
Rank 3: Base 61-95; 100 HP
Rank 4: Base 96-119; 110 HP
Rank 5: Base 120-140; 120 HP
Rank 6: Base 141-160; 125 HP
Rank 7: Base 161-180; 130 HP
Rank 8: Base 181-200; 135 HP
Rank 9: Base 201+; 140 HP

A Nature boost will increase the Rank of a stat by one, and will be noted with a (+) next to it. (e.g. a Rank 3 Attack with a boost will be displayed as Rank 4 (+) )

A Nature reduction will decrease the Rank of a stat by one, and will be noted with a (-) next to it. (e.g. a Rank 3 Attack with a reduction will be displaced as Rank 2 (-) )

Note that the above does not apply to Speed. Speed boosts and reductions are handled differently in ASB, since the Speed stat is not put into ranks like the other stats are.

Positive Nature: Multiplies base Speed by 1.15 (rounded up) and provides a flat accuracy boost on all attacks equal to its new Base Speed squared, then divided by a number based on its evolution stage. (Formula: ACC Boost = (New Base^2)/Divisor [Round Normally, Max: 30]). The Divisor is 870 for fully evolved Pokemon, 580 for Pokemon that are the second of three stages, 435 for Pokemon that are the first of two stages, and 290 for Pokemon that are the first of three stages. This accuracy boost is added to their Dodge Command chance.

Negative Nature: Divides Base Speed by 1.15 and gives a flat 10 point decrease in evasion, effectively adding 10 accuracy (e.g. 85 becomes 95) to opponent's attacks directed at this Pokemon.

In addition, the stats section also requires your Pokemon's Size and Weight Classes. The rest of this section can be skipped if you don't want to read it; it's just for the more curious.

A Pokemon's Size Class determines how good a Pokemon is at using three particular universal commands: Bodyblock, Dodge, and Take Cover. Each of these commands is listed at the end of the Attack List. Size is primarily determined by a Pokemon's Height; however, their body structure has also been taken into account. In total, there are seven class sizes, roughly defined as follows:

Class 1: Caterpie, Diglett (Baseline: 0.8m or less)
Class 2: Weavile (Baseline: 0.8-1.2m, 1.2-2m serpentine)
Class 3: Sceptile (Baseline: 1.2-2m humanoid. 1.0-1.5m quadrupedal 2-3.5m serpentine)
Class 4: Raikou (Baseline: 2-2.5m humanoid, 1.5-2.5m quadrupedal, 3.5-5m serpentine)
Class 5: Arceus (Baseline: 2.6-3.5m humanoid/avian, 2.6-3.0m quadrupedal, 5-6.5m serpentine)
Class 6: Lugia (Baseline: 3.5-5m humanoid/avian, 3.1-4.5m quadrupedal, 6.5-8m serpentine)
Class 7: Wailord (Baseline: 6m+ humanoid/avian/quadrupedal, 8m+ serpentine)

A Pokemon's Weight Class determines how heavy that Pokemon is and its resistance to being knocked out of a Bodyblock or run through while an ally uses Take Cover. The Weight Class of a Pokemon coincides with Grass Knot and Low Kick for the first six classes, and then increases based on values favorable to various individual Pokemon. Weight Classes are illustrated below.

Class 1: <10kg
Class 2: 10-25kg
Class 3: 25.1-50kg
Class 4: 50.1-100kg
Class 5: 100.1-200kg
Class 6: 200.1-274.9kg
Class 7: 275-349.9kg
Class 8: 350-449.9kg
Class 9: 450-599.9kg
Class 10: 600-749.9kg
Class 11: 749-949.9kg
Class 12: 950kg+

Again, a list of the stats of starter Pokemon can be found above (with Size and Weight Classes included).

Evolution, Move, and Dream Counters:
Aside from Currency Counters (CC) and Universal Counters (UC), there are 3 other types of counters also used in ASB. These three counters are all for individual Pokemon, as opposed to CC and UC which are for the trainer, and are called Evolution Counters (EC), Move Counters (MC), and Dream Counters (DC).

- Evolution Counters (EC):
Each time a Pokemon battles, their Evolution Counter goes up by one.
  • Three Stage Pokemon (Charmander, Gible, Abra) must gain 9 EC in order to reach their final stages; their EC should look like EC: 0/9. When they hit 4/9 they can evolve into their middle stage, and at 9/9 they evolve into their final stage.
  • Two Stage Pokemon (Eevee, Hippopotas, Swablu) must gain 6 EC in order to reach their final stages; their EC should look like EC: 0/6.
  • Non-evolving Pokemon (Skarmory, Dunsparse, Sableye) do not have Evolution Counters and should not have an EC counter.
Exceptions:
  • Caterpie, Weedle, and Wurmple can evolve into their second forms at 3/5 and their final forms at 5/5 EC; their EC should look like EC: 0/5.
  • Burmy and Kricketot can evolve to their final forms at 4/4 EC; their EC should look like EC: 0/4
- Move Counters (MC):
Each time a Pokemon battles, their Move Counter goes up by two*. Move Counters can be used to teach new moves to your Pokemon. Here are the costs associated with Move Counters:
  • 1 MC: Level-Up Moves from any Pokemon at or below the current Evolution stage, Pledge Moves.
  • 2 MC: BW TMs, BW Tutors.
  • 3 MC: Egg Moves, Event Moves, Past Gen TMs, Past Gen Tutors
*Pokemon with both their EC and DC at the maximum level receive 3 MC per battle.

- Dream Counters (DC):
Each Pokemon's Dream World Ability is locked to start. Each time a Pokemon battles, its Dream Counter goes up by one. Once a Pokemon reaches 5 DC, its trainer may voluntarily unlock its Dream World ability. If a Pokemon has no Dream World Ability or has already unlocked it, no extra points can be distributed. Once a Dream World ability is unlocked, it will be unlocked even if the Pokemon evolves.

If a Pokemon in any of its stages has a Dream World ability, its DC should read DC: 0/5. If it has no Dream World Ability, There should be no DC counter.

Moves:

Each of your starting Pokemon begins with every level-up move they learn from every generation up to Level 25. Veekun is the best repository for this information, just search for the Pokemon. For CAP specific information, go to the bottom of this post. Then, select 5 of their Egg Moves and 5 Fifth Generation TMs to round out their starting attack list.

Pokemon without Egg Moves: If your starting Pokemon has no Egg Moves to select from, you may select any 5 attacks from Move Tutors and Special Giveaways from any generation. If this Pokemon also does not have any Move Tutors or Special giveaways, you may select any 5 TM moves from any generation.

Pokemon without TMs: If your starting Pokemon does not have any TMs to choose from (e.g. cannot, not refuses to. [Magikarp, Beldum, Wynaut, etc.]), it can instead select up to 5 attacks from Move Tutors and Special Giveaways from any generation.

For the ease of the approval staff (e.g. expediting approval), please list Level-Up Moves learned first, then Egg Moves, then TMs in a single line item list.

Getting Approved:

Once your profile is all set and ready, post it in this thread. One of the approval staff listed below will approve your profile (or tell you to make some fixes first), it will be added to this post, and then you're ready to battle! Your team must be approved before you can use it. Don't worry though, it shouldn't take long to get approved.

Approval Staff:
Head Approvers:
Deck Knight
Seven Deadly Sins

Assistant Approvers:
Athenodoros
C$FP
danmantincan
Dogfish44
Elevator Music
Engineer Pikachu
Glacier Knight
Its_A_Random
Leethoof
LouisCyphre
Objection
Ragnarokalex
Texas Cloverleaf

Each Approver shall earn 1 Universal Counter for every 5 teams checked.

What Next?:

So where do we go from here? To battle of course! Go to the Battle Tower to learn the ropes and find matches. It might also help to skim over the Data Audit Thread to figure out some of the trickier mechanics of ASB.

Everyone please enjoy.

smashlloyd20:

It looks like you forgot to choose your TMs for Embirch. Since this is early on I'll let you add them before reffing your battle. Also on your Aron and Machop you applied the Speed dropping nature incorrectly. You don't decrease by 15 total, you divide their Base Speed by 1.15 and round down, so Aron would have 26 Speed and Machop would have 30.

ungulateman:

Everything appears to be in order. Approved.

shuckles my hero:

Approved. I'll edit it in, but don't forget that Two Stage Pokemon like Eevee only need Max 4 Evolution counters, not 6. Also whenever you have a Speed boosting nature, multiply its Base Speed on your computers by 1.15 and then round up to the nearest whole number (so 55 becomes 63.25, which rounds up to 64). Same with a speed dropping nature, except you divide by 1.15 and then round down.

Acklow:

Approved. Don't forget to list all of your Pokemon at the top, you currently only have Cacnea listed. Since all of your Pokemon are Two Stage Pokemon, they all have Max 4 Evolution Counters, not 6.

Plusle:

Approved. Don't forget to apply your natures to your stats. I'll edit it in. Same thing for your Voodoll with Shuckle's Eevee, it's only a Two Stage Pokemon, so it only needs Max 4 Evolution Counters, not 6.

SonofShadoo:

Approved. I've been denoting up and down natures by adjusting the star count and just noting a (+) or (-) next to it. If a star value fall below 1 or above 5, I mark it as *(-1) or *****(+1) .

Deck Knight:

Is a fine upstanding gent. Approved.

Rediamond:

Approved. I will edit in Sprites later.

zarator:

Approved.

This will be my last round of approvals for a couple of hours. See if you all can get some refs in the meantime.
