Default Official(!) Smogon University PO Stats -- September 2011

***If you want to see stats for a metagame that isn't listed, shoot me a PM, and I'll throw it up. It literally takes me two minutes.***

Hi there, folks!

It's September, and I'm back with more stats. Same as last month, they're culled from battle logs, so only pokemon that appear in battles are actually counted. This is less than ideal, but we have strong reason to believe that, by re-normalizing the stats so that the sum of all usage percentages is 600% (which I call MaestroXXVI's Method), the resulting stats should be roughly equivalent to what would have been generated using the old method, which took into account ALL pokemon on a team, whether it appeared in battle or not (the reason we don't think it matters is because we looked at what would happen if we took into account only teams where all six pokemon appeared. The results were almost identical. For more, read here).

The scripts that I used to generate this data can be found here. If you see something that looks wrong, say something. I'm more than willing to double-check my code.

So now, without further ado, I present you with the Smogon PO usage stats for September 2011:

Standard OU Rated

Standard UU Rated

Standard RU Rated

Standard Ubers Rated

Standard LC Rated

By request of waterwarrior...
Dream World OU Rated

Dream World Ubers Rated

By request of Sniffle Puzz
OU Gen 4 Rated

By request of HuntSaboteur,
Gen IV UU

StreetPKMN

Full Team Stats
For comparison, I've done a separate run where I only count full teams (teams where all six pokemon appear):
Standard OU

Standard UU

Standard RU

1337 Stats!
MaestroXXVI, among others, asked what would happen if I only counted teams where the trainer was in the top echelon of the ratings. So I chose an arbitrary cutoff (1337), and applied a rule wherein only trainers with a rating at-or-above the cutoff at the time I dled the ratings (Oct. 2) got their teams counted. Below are the results. Note that there were only 123 users with a ranking at-or-above 1337 when I dled the ratings.

Standard OU Rated

I can, in principle, do this for the other tiers as well, but I doubt I'm going to. It's too much of a hassle to retrieve the rankings. I can also move the cutoff up or down (it's arbitrary, after all), but I probably won't unless it's requested.

The inverse of this would be "troll stats."

Lead Usage Statistics!
I'm actually surprised more of you didn't harass me about this. Keep in mind when comparing to above stats--the sum of all columns should add up to 100%, not 600%.

It's been four months now since we had a usage-based update to the tiers. The method we've used in the past (for Gen V) for creating the lines between OU and UU, UU and RU involve the following method: take the previous month's pecentage, multiply by 20. Add the percentage from the month before, multiplied by 3. Add the percentage from the month before that. Divide everything by 24. The cutoff between OU and UU (and between UU and RU) lies at approximately 3.41%, which corresponds to a 50% chance that you will see the pokemon once in every 20 battles.

Here are the three-month usage-based stats that would be generated if we used this method. Ignore the "Usage" column. It's just there so it doesn't break some scripts that I use.

Three-month OU stats

Three-month UU stats

Three-month RU stats

For comparison, here are the three-month stats if we use the "full team method:"
OU

UU

RU

If we actually used the above stats to make the new tiers (which we probably won't do, at least not right away), this would be the tier list (including an "initial NU"):

Update: I've been told that the changes to the tiers (ignore NU for now) are being pushed through. So these are officially the new tiers!

Caveat: I will not be updating this post with the results of the suspect votes. If you want official tiers, go here.

Thanks love. <3

Holy crap at Tyran/Rotom-W.Scizor on 23% of teams while everything below 15th is used less than 1/10th of the time.

What the hell?

Tier sizes:
OU- 48 Pokemon
UU- ~53 Pokemon
RU- 55 Pokemon.

Interesting.

Well, I like analyzing stats so I will lengthen this post. First, let's look at the big dogs of OU.
Quote:
1 | Tyranitar | 93093 | 23.345% |
| 2 | Rotom-W | 92342 | 23.157% |
| 3 | Scizor | 92249 | 23.134% |
| 4 | Ferrothorn | 80391 | 20.160% |
| 5 | Dragonite | 76384 | 19.155% |
| 6 | Politoed | 76077 | 19.078% |
| 7 | Gliscor | 72805 | 18.258% |
| 8 | Heatran | 66329 | 16.634% |
| 9 | Jirachi | 60160 | 15.087% |
| 10 | Latios | 53020 | 13.296% |
Tyranitar is in danger of losing its crown to a fucking Rotom?? Okay, that's...perfectly justifiable. Rotom-W has perfect stats and typing, and his Levitate ability lets it take on Sand and Rain well. Dragonite feels like being in the top 10 is cool, but the top 5 is even cooler. Honestly, I think #5 is a little too high for Dragonite and that Politoed is more deserving of the spot, but whatever. Politoed is doing great as always.

Gliscor has always struck me as a bit overrated, but I guess his general utility can't go unappreciated. Heatran feels like a Special GLiscor as well, I just don't see them as consistent Top 10 Pokemon. Though I guess I can't think of anything to take their places... Hax Fairy can luck his way to the Top 10 where he belongs, as he serves as a good counter to the #10 Pokemon, the underrated Latios! Latios should be higher than #10 in my opinion, because Specs Draco Meteors are like Choice Band Outrages from Haxorus, except Latios can say "oh Blissey, fuck you I just used Trick or Psyshock!"

Next, let's see who got the privilege of joining OU after being decided way too cool for RU-BL.

Espeon and her Baton Whore Passing jumps into the thirties, which is why people are so butthurt about Baton Pass (if it gets banned then my special app should have been accepted as I would have been smarter than 2/3 of the voters but w/e).

Celebi takes the nineteenth spot for both the three-month period and the one-month period, which is probably some statement about onion's rights or something. Anyway Celebi is good but that's because Rain people don't pack appropriate counters. Seriously people why will you not use Tornadus you morons! Rage!

Gastro(ll)don- Okay this fucker really needs to gtfo. It fucks the team I use sideways and it's really good. Though I would like to extend a word out to people who use this thing- stop switching Gastrodon into fucking Politoed. Best case scenario you get a tiny bit of momentum. Worst case scenario you get Toxiced, and a Toxiced Gastrodon is fucking useless. Okay but seriorusly Gastroll is a good Pokemon and deserves to be in OU, unlike the following Pokemon that I'm about to mention!

OU Dropouts:

Hippowdon: Oh God this is really going to fuck UU sideways. And honestly, I'm not sure if Hippo deserves to go to UU. It's a Weather starter with reliable recovery, which none of the other weathermons have. That alone should make it OU worthy in my opinion. It has phazing utility, can Ice Fang Gliscors, it can SR like Tar, and even attack pretty well. I know it's pretty overshadowed by Tyranitar but it's good enough for OU IMO.

Chandelure: Yeah I know it's Electivire Round 2 yadda yadda yadda. It's a Ghost Type that Tyranitar can't switch into because HP Fighting facefucks it. Honestly, this thing deserves OU more than like Metagross or Swampert, so whatever.

Darmanitan: Too niche. Sun abusers are already everywhere so it's hard to abuse Sun and get 3.4% usage. Though now Victini will have competition for suicide Scarfer!

Machamp: Hi, my name's Conkeldurr. I'm bulkier than you I can heal pretty damn reliably and I don't need no damn No Guard. Again, Champ is a good mon, but its bulk can't hold up to all the Psychics running around now. Not to mention boosted weather attacks. If weather goes this boss should go OU.

Tornadus: Okay. This fucker is like amazing. You know who can switch into this fucker's Choice Specs set? Give up? NOTHING. Blissey? Raped by Focus Blast if SR is down. Chansey, fine. but(t) fuck Chansey. Other Pokemon? No. You want to know what can switch into Hurricane? Nothing. Skarmory is 2KOd even without SR. Ferrothorn? Probably not. And this monster is fast as fuck. 111 Speed says fuck you musketeers, Latis, and Gengar and other shit. It even ties with Thunderbro, who does not outclass this mon. This boss should be OU or more like Uber or Moody tier or something.

UU stats look way off.

Nobody uses hippo without stoutland. This shows how bad the fluctuation is and, while I'm amazed, impressed, etc. that you took the time to compile these, I wouldn't trust these stats to determine any tiers.

edit: this is also an obvious problem

I've seen a bunch of sand teams without Stoutland, although yes, most do.

This thing has higher usage than Gyarados for christ sake, and had 7% in August + something like 5%+ in June and STILL is UU. Seriously? D:
+ Mamoswine is under the 3% cutoff now so it may stay UU for a little while longer.

Also:

| 55 | Chandelure | 12025 | 3.016% |
| 57 | Darmanitan | 11338 | 2.843% |

| 63 | Tornadus | 10115 | 2.537% |
| 67 | Whimsicott | 8801 | 2.207% |

...Shit.

At least Metagross, Venusaur and CLOYSTER (THANK F*CKING GOD) are above the 3.5% cutoff again. I left out Swampert because it's so close 3.5% I don't want to include it yet. The next UU test is going to be so screwed up...

I'm very happy that Hydreigon is up in usage. I personally have been trying to use it at least somewhat. I admit I use Scizor quite frequently, but I also use Toxicroak a lot.

I don't think Blissey or Ferrothorn are all that good, and yet people insist on using them. Ah well.

Three-month stats and potential new tier lists are up.

Keep in mind, these are not official stats, and these are not official tiers.

Garchomp is quite high in usage in UBERS.
I do feel like it's a good UBER mon with more slower dragons and all just going around.
However, I'm not quite sure why so many are using the SD set (by PO stats, it's the most used chomp variant).
I'd assume it's not too great in UBERS...am I wrong or...?

Thanks for the stats!

Looks like RU Sun possibly gained some new toys...
-Tangrowth
-Sawsbuck
-Charizard
-Victreebel

Awsome :D

Now my thoughts on the stuff possibly dropping into UU.

Hippowdon: Meh, call me when DW Sandslash is released. UU could use a new physical wall anyway.

Chandelure: I dont think this would THAT broken in UU. Some counters and ckecks I can think of atm are Trace Porygon2, Snorlax, Chansey and Kindra. I also see Chandy' fitting in on Hail teams as a spin blocker/fire immunity.

Darmanitan: Now the though of this thing in UU scares me. It's basically a stronger Staraptor. Slowbro will spike if he actuallly drops. Easy BL imo.

Porygon2: With all these heavy hitters dropping down, a new wall wouldn't hurt :3

Machamp: FINALLY. This is just one of those mons that belong in UU. I think he would fit perfectly with Slowbro, Cress and even Chandelure keeing him in line.

Tornadus: I'm not really convinced Tornadus would be broken in UU. With all the Stealth Rock and Blizzspam, I don't see this guy taking UU by storm. Zapos and Chansey are also waiting. I do see a spike in Rain Dance teams if Tornadus drops, priority Rain Dance is pretty sweet.

Whimsicott: Fuck

why is that? Sun is a great weather. Sure it's not a good as Sand or Rain, but some of the better players(not me) have proven it can be effective.

Nobody uses hippo without stoutland. This shows how bad the fluctuation is and, while I'm amazed, impressed, etc. that you took the time to compile these, I wouldn't trust these stats to determine any tiers.
Fluctuations...? The method Antar uses, as far as I'm aware, puts a slight bias on the number of sweepers, so if anything, the actual number of Hippopotas might be even higher than the stats indicate.

No, it's in the number of defensive pokémon, pivots and weather inducers, as they're more likely to appear in battle than a sweeper (ragequits, battles won without showing all your pokémon, etc). Antar's using "MaestroXXVI's method" to normalize the stats and, in theory, it doesn't make the stats THAT different, but maybe there's something slightly wrong there.

Or maybe people do use Hippopotas without Stoutland.

I'm seeing a huge spike in the amount of RU sun teams. CB Entei + any of the 4 new RU Sun sweepers...
