Championship points

I was wondering if anyone could explain how championship points work cause the official pokemon website makes no sense. What are they, how do I get them, and how do they affect me getting into nationals?

You get championship points for placing highly in Premier events like Regionals and Nationals. They don't count for anything this year. CP earned in future years may be used to determine invites to Worlds.

Okay thank you so much. I was worried that, on the off chance, I won at regionals, they would be like nope you should have gone to more events, which would be stupid.
