Default Theorymon: Pokemon MMORPG

Come on, it must have crossed everyone's mind at some point! This is a thread where we can formulate ideas for the ultimate pokemon game - unfortunately probably the one to end the series, but a giant MMORPG where you can explore every region in creation at that point, catch every pokemon in existence at the time - and maybe some new ones. This would be the game every pokemon fan would dream of. In this thread, let's make some ideas for some aspects of this game!!! Ideas that have over 5 likes will be put in the OP, you just have to put it in a comment, for instance:

"I agree there should be every pokemon available, like celever suggested" at the bottom of your comment, or something along those lines, anyways.

Enjoy!

Well, if it was up to me- you would be the "trainer" But what would make a pokemon MMO incredible would be you play as the Pokemon when in Battles- that shatters the typical "class" archetype of MMO's. Giving you the ability to play as over 600+ mons.

The key to the game would be making all of the Pokemon balanced. It would be difficult to say have a Charmander attain the same viability as Charizard- but if they managed to pull it off- that'd be amazing.

I think there's a fair few Pokemon MMORPGs out there, actually, although I've never played any of them and the only one that interests me is a Mystery Dungeon one...

MMO's are about increasing character power vs monster power, usually by grinding for better gear.

What would a pokemon MMO focus on to allow character progression?

There is a PMD MMO if I recall, but from what I've heard and seen it sucks, which is rather unfortunate.

Wait, there was a PMD MMO? And it sucked? This is why I hate fangames. I'd actually love to have one. Much better than the DLC cash-grab we got for Infinite Labyrinth. Seriously, Day 1 DLC and only one is free. I mean, the one is nice, but I'm not going to pay a dollar and a half for one dungeon.

PMU (pokemon mystery universe) is really good! I played it for a while then stopped!
Its really intersting trading, talking, and fighting with other players
Its pretty fun until you get to the higher then its just kinda grindy but really depends on your taste

heres the link to the pmd mmo
dont knock it before you try it :)

There was one called Pokemon Crater a while ago that allowed you to fight every gym leader+elite four member from the first 3 gens. But it's dead now, creator wanted to do something else. And tbh it kind of sucked.

Hmm it would be a great thing to have but after making a huge world to explore with challenges around every corner i still feel there would be too many people ... Still i would give it a try if it was out there

You could have different trainers focusing on different types/play styles.

Physically offensive, specially offensive, speed, Poison, Steel, etc.

Such as...

"Warrior" - This class focuses on straight out attacking, whether it be physically or special. The pokemon this trainer uses gains bonus damage to STAB attacks, increase attack stats, but loses hp/defense or something else.

"Mage" - This class would focus on "meta" types, such as Poison, Psychic, Dark, etc. If the pokemon this trainer used matches a type they are specialized in, they gain special attacks or even bonuses overall.

"Tank" - This class would be the opposite of the "warrior" class. Instead of increasing STAB, increasing the defensive stats of the mon they use.

As a WoW player, I am used to the style MMOs use, and I think it would be a great place to start. Multiple classes (like the examples I gave, plus more) but with a large amount, you could easily split talent trees that MMOs have.

More examples

Warrior tree 1 - Focuses on the Special Attack stat by increasing it by x% but reducing SpD by 1/2 of x that the SpA stat was increased by. Different talents could give new Special Attacks...certain non-dragon type getting Draco Meteor as a final talent. Or even instead of a ability that gives -2 to SpA when used, it only gives -1. Etc.

Honestly, I think the combat would be the hardest part. Taking away the turn based for "instances" and other group projects, I don't believe the typical Pokemon style combat would suffice. Although PvP could easily stick that way, PvE would need a total revamp for groups.

Actually, there is a homebrew Pokemon TTG system that does have aspects of trainer specialization as well those turn-based elements you mention. The name is Pokemon Tabletop Adventures, I believe? If an RPG is basically a TTG automatized and virtualized, and an MMORPG just an RPG but more open-ended and with more players, then it stands to reason that it could be done for pokemon and has a decent base already.

With a paperbase game it's easier to do turn based events, but with online gaming, your trying to do things as fast as possible, it would lose too much appeal with this.

I believe turn-based MMO's have been done before--hell, there's a 3rd-Gen homebrew pokemon MMO that works like that. You could always have rts elements if pace is an issue, but that might ruin the appeal for some people. Can't please everyone.
