-People have put to rest the notions of new attributes -Speculation of old pokemon getting new evolutionary relatives (particularily Skarmory and Dunsparce) was a heated topic. -Speculation of new techniques and abilities, most of which were an old move fit to work with another attribute. -There was a discussion concerning the players social status in the Pokemon World after defeating the Elite Four. Labarinth drove his opinion home and back a couple of times that one should be treated more like the champion after defeating the current one of the region with a plethora of NPCs set out to threaten ones title. -The matter of an eviolite that raises attack and/or speed was a focal point of speculation for a short stint. - Birkal edited the first post of this thread with the following request: please keep your speculation reasonable; do not post just for the sake of posting if you have nothing remotely intelligent to say. -Junichi Masudas recent blog post has gotten people speculating about new friendship mechanics. -The introduction of a Vs Seeker equivalent has been speculated. -There's a movement (and a potential uprising in the event of dissapointment by Game Freak) favoring a Grass-Dragon evolution for Tropius. -People miss having ribbons and super contests. -After a post mentioning that the male players glasses fell off when he was swinging on the rope in the trailer revealing the trailer to be screenshots from a early beta testing, people have put further thought into the potential availability of character customization. -2chan hasn't produced any new "leaks" lately. -Fennekin never gets old. Here's something I'm curious about. Infernape and Emboar draw their inspiration from the monkey and pig demons from Journey to the West. The only non-human main character they haven't turned into a Fire-type starter's final form from that tale is the dragon-horse beast, even though he was mostly used for transportation, if memory serves correctly. It's rather improbable, but I would find it fascinating to see Fennekin evolve into a legendary-esque draconic chimera. Outside of that, I don't want Fennekin to turn into a Vulpix-colored Renamon/Zoroark crossover. I kind of imagine her evolving into a four-tailed kyuubu demon, because there's another world of multi-tailed mythical foxes that Pokemon hasn't completely covered. Whether or not it's bipedal...eh. They've pulled off quadruped fighting-types, so if Fennekin becomes yet another fire-fighting, it's not impossible for game freak to get away with such a design mixed with said typing. As for Fennekin's look, I noticed a small trend in fan designs made by Japanese fans. In them, Fennekin's evoltions often have their ear-fur grow and become something of a beard. Examine: Ear-fur beard we've all seen And ear-fur beard you might not have seen As far as I know, this isn't a thing in Japanese mythology, but please, can anyone tell em origin of this (if it's not just an obvious design possibility). |

There's really not much to tag to those concepts culturally. It seems that people just like the comical look of ear fur growing into a beard to help demonstrate Finalkins maturity as a stage 2 evolved pokemon. |

Has anyone wondered what the story might be about this time? I think that the dark area with the fire in the trailer had something to do with the new vilainous team, or maybe with Yvetal (black/red).

I guess the story probably involves a villainous team trying to get their hands on a Legendary Pokémon to change/take over the world.
At times, I miss Team Rocket. First and foremost, they weren't that ridiculous. Their goal was achieved well before your story began. They were dealing with smuggling and kidnapping, blackmailing, burglary and probably money laundering, what do I know. And running a somewhat legit casino. They were the mafia. They practically owned Kanto by the time Red showed up. They didn't really want to change the world, steal all the Pokémon or something equally farfetched. They wanted to keep the status quo, and your quest was to bring them down. They didn't dress up in (overly) stupid costumes, and their leader was a carismatic guy in a tuxedo and with a realistic hair style/colour (looking at you, Colress). Regular bandits, not radical extremists or rebels. In later games, Cipher and Team Snagem were much the same. Cipher, much like Team Rocket, wanted a strong legendary Pokémon, but they only wanted it to increase their efficiency at evildoing. They used it for robberies, instead of challenging the world order. After all, a successful villainous team is dependant on a functioning society to leech off, and they don't want to raise more attention than necessary. Sure, their goal is world domination, but they want to achieve it using sneaky means. You would hardly notice it the day they eventually took over. All games since R/S/E have featured more ambitious and crazy villains, though. A "plot creep" has taken place, now there's always the world that is on stake. Defeat the villains, or face doomsday. I can see the logic behind that, it makes you more of a hero, but still... it's just not as plausible. It feels a little too forced that you singlehandedly save the world. Bringing down a local crime cartel by uncovering their hideouts and chasing their grunts out of several towns, then thwarting their takeover of some landmark, that seems a little more realistic. Heck, in G/S, you stop a hostage situation at the Radio Tower, and fix a sabotage attempt of the Railway in Kanto. You don't change the world, but you stop baddies you can relate to, and directly help a lot of people. In later games, you're pushed before The Pokémon That Created The World As We Know It, and disband the evil team by befriending it. Whoopity-woo. EDIT: To elaborate on this, consider the image of the evil teams through the generations. We're starting at the most recent, with Team Plasma. They appear out of nowhere, tell people to release their Pokémon, and wander off. Everybody wonders "Who are those people? What do they want?" Then later, you stop them without the general population understanding much of what was happening. Goal: Take over the world. First by disarming the population, then failing that, blackmailing everybody using Kyurem to destroy those who resisted. Team Galactic were equally bad, pretending to be in the energy business while secretly researching legendary Pokémon so they could shape the world to their image. Most inhabitants of Sinnoh guessed that they were up to no good, but their actions never really affected anybody. You stopped them before they could interfere with people's daily life. Goal: To create a new universe with Cyrus as god. Team Aqua and Team Magma were also scheming guys who stuck to the shadows, and used science to fuel their environmental terrorism before searching out Kyogre and Groudon and trying to use them instead. They broke into places and stole stuff, built elaborate secret bases and used fancy equipment in pursuit of their goal. Goal: Changing the environment globally to better suit their favourite types of Pokémon. They never really revealed themselves to the general population, preferring to work without much interference. Then, Team Rocket. First of all, when you encounter them, you see that they rule stuff in Kanto. Most of the region, seemingly apart from the remote Pallet-Viridian-Pewter area, is the playing ground of Team Rocket. Everybody talk about them. Everybody is afraid of them. The police are helpless. They make headlines in papers daily. They run businesses all over the region. Multiple regions, even. People talk about them everywhere. People are openly confessing, outright bragging, that they are members of Team Rocket. They are powerful and they know it. As far as I can recall at the top of my head, Vermilion City is the only settlement in eastern Kanto without a permanent Rocket presence. They have society in a vicegrip, and it's up to you to stop them. Goal: Acquiring money. Making profit. Stealing Pokémon. Continue until world domination is achieved. In XY, I wish for a little scaled-down plot. Legendaries that are powerful and rare, but not almighty and one-of-a-kind, and certainly not in charge of vital functions of the universe. Just a really strong, rare and revered creature that according to local lore appears from time to time. B/W sorta got it right, there were no world-shaping legendaries there, yet they ran into world-destroying-territory when Kyurem was used to blackmail the entire region in BW2. Seeing those structures in the desert in the video, it doesn't appear that XY will be content with petty criminals, though. Those are either civilian research facilities (and when have we ever seen one not infested with criminals?) or the hideout of somebody. They don't look friendly enough to be a "good" place, so I guess we'll have to expel baddies from them at some point. They're probably using the place to find out more about how to best use a powerful Pokémon to advance their grand evil plan. *sigh* Last edited by Cobraroll; Jan 25th, 2013 at 6:43:15 PM. |

The Weather Institute in RSE was a civilian research building that Team Aqua/Magma invaded to try to find a Pokemon to change the weather for them... but only would have gotten a Castform. So they upped the ante. Groudon and Kyogre were pretty neat. They were powerful in a way that made sense: one made the world heat up, the other made it Seattle. The world would change, not end.
Dialga/Palkia were just silly. Dragons that control space and time? Powerful, yes, but their power is a deus ex machina within itself. Giratina was sort of neat because it did its own thing. But a dragon that can alter reality at will? Or bend time at will? In concept, completely unstoppable. In battle, very much stoppable. I think that Black and White were a step back towards localized problems. Reshiram/Zekrom were part of a founding myth in the region, and did not control 'Ideals' and 'Truth' respectively. They merely represented the ideologies of the trainers that trained them. And they were powerful Pokemon to be used for that purpose. N didn't use Reshiram to destroy the world. He used Reshiram because that's the kind of hero he thought to be. Ghetsis had his own ludicrous plan. (Seriously, that stunt with the ring-castle boarding the Pokemon League? What the fuck.) Hopefully X/Y do the same sort of thing, instead of DPP's world-shattering shenanigans. |

My personal favorite expansion of that theme is a new team, Team Dischord, either: Controls the master of Chaos (Yveltal) in order to cause Chaos to complete their goals or Gets rid of the Master of Order (Xerneas) in order to cause chaos and complete their goals. I think I've mentioned those earlier, though. But it'd be interesting. RSE story's still my favorite though, with the original BW in second.

Anyone else hoping to be able to go back to prior regions, maybe see how they've changed with time? That whole concept was definitely what made GSC for me.

I would love to go back to Hoenn in the form of a R/S remake. Time could pass, I guess, but I do miss Hoenn.

This is true, we don't have another pokemon with the ridiculous HP/special defense combo of Blissey. However, they did introduce new special moves that affect defense in BW like Psyshock and Secret Sword (although the second isn't as widely distributed). I don't think we'll get a new status though. I can understand Paralysis quartering speed (can't move), poison decresing health (it's poison...), and burn affecting physical attackers (burns hurt when you move, so a pokemon won't hit as hard due to being hindered by his burn) but I don't really see how they would do something for special attackers.

Cobraroll, I definitely see where you are coming from and agree. A team with less uhh, for lack of better wording, 'out of this world' ambitions. A criminal organization, a not a weirdo cult.

Speaking of legendaries, I really hope there are a lot less new ones this time around. We don't need that many of them. Bit of a bitter-sweet shame, because that's a really cool fakemon. Reminds me of Gaomon crossed with Renamon.
