Cool Attack Tiers: The Counterpart to Defense Tiers

Wow. Defense Tiers. Now we can compare pokemon's reletive walling abilities... but you ever wish to estimate who could OHKO a specific pokemon without using a calculator? Now you can!

I have finished calculating the ATTACK tiers list. This is not really a tier as we all know who is good at attacking and so forth... but this list is on the same scale and has the same calculations as the Defense Tiers. So everything that works on Defense tiers will work on these attack tiers.

If you don't know anything about my previous Defense Tiers list, don't worry, I'll give a good example at the end of my post. But without further ado... the Pokemon Attack Tier list:

Arceus: 58.97 58.97 61.13 61.13
Now, the Attack Attack Tier list:

(Base Power -- Tier Number -- Example)
Code:
40 38.70 Mach Punch
60 42.96 Aerial Ace
70 44.57 Hidden Power
 75 45.30 Brick Break
80 45.98 Shadow Ball
90 47.21 Psychic
95 47.78 Bolt/Beam
100 48.32 Earthquake
120 50.23 Close Combat
130 51.07 Last Resort
140 51.85 Draco Meteor
150 52.57 Hyper Beam
200 55.59 Reversal??
250 57.93
400 62.86 Self-Destruct effective
500 65.20 Explosion-Effective
Effectively, Exploders half the opponent's defenses. That is why the BP is essentially 500. Ditto with Self-Destruct

Modifiers:
Multiplier -- Tier Modifier -- Examples
Code:
1.06 0.64 (Leftovers)
1.1  1.00 (Natures)
1.2  1.91 (Charcoal & friends)
1.3  2.75 (Life Orb)
1.5  4.25 (Choice Band, STAB)
2    7.27 (Super Effective)
3    11.53 (Two Swords Dances)
4    14.55 (4x Effective)
Now, how do you use this? Simple. To get your full Attack Tier number, you start with your Pokemon and EV Spread (lets say... 252 Heracross), then an Attack (Megahorn), and then figure out the modifiers (lets stick with just STAB for now).

And now, the two OHKO numbers:
Magic Number #1: 3.53 (guarenteed)
Magic Number #2: 1.83 (chance)
Magic Number #3: 2.65 (average)

Full Formula:
Pokemon_Number + Attack_Number + Modifiers - Magic Number.

So we got:
252 Heracross (61.43) using Megahorn(50.23) + STAB(4.25). This gives us 115.91.

Now SUBTRACT your two magic numbers to get 112.38(Guarentee) and 114.08(chance)

So anything with defense tier 112.38 or lower is a Guarentee kill with Megahorn. Anything with 114.08 is a chance of a kill with Megahorn. Using Metalkid's calculator...
http://www.metalkid.info/Pokemon/Onl.../DamageDP.aspx

0/0 Sableye (112.38 defense tier) == Damage: 101.24% - 119.09%
0/0 Luminion (114.02 defense tier) == Damage: 86.38% - 101.79%

Now, lets say we got a little bit of a more complicated example. Lets add a choice band. That is as simple as adding 4.25 to the values.

We now get 116.63 (Guarentee) and 118.33 (chance)

0/0 Porygon2 (116.62) == Damage: 100.96% - 118.65%
0/0 Lapras (118.27) == Damage: 86.28% - 101.50%

See how easy it is? Just add the modifiers, subtract the magic number and volia! You've got the value.

Two-Hit KOs are all pokemon that are in the next 7.27 tiers.
Three-Hit KOs are all pokemon within 11.53
Four-Hit KOs are 14.55
Five-Hit KOs are 16.89
Six-Hit KOs are 18.80

Explosion's base power is effectively around 500 because it halves the opponent's Defense immediately before doing damage. Other than that, this is some very nice work.

What would be cool now is an application where you input a pokemon, its ev spread, nature, and one of its attacks, and receive a chart detailing the damage that the pokemon can do to various OU pokemon.

That's easily done with a multi-lined damage calculator, really.

EDIT: Hmm... I didn't see Darkflagrance's post. But either way, my points below still hold. So this isn't directed to you Mekkah, but anyone who wants to know the difference between attack calculators and this chart.

For calculating a single pokemon, probably. But there are key differences:

1. Damage calculators are more precise, giving precise % points where someone would be killed or whatnot. Whereas these attack tiers simply give a figure of who is OHKOed, Two Hit KOed, etc. etc. (Granted, there is a simple formula to convert the approxamate damage difference into an approxamate % value... but you'll require a calculator for that. The attack/defense tiers can all be done easily within your head)

2. The Tier lists are easily modified. Multiplications have been transformed into additions. Whereas mutliplying 55% to 65% damage by 1.5 is difficult to do in someone's head (to see what happens when guts is activated)... or hell, what happens when Life Orb is on the pokemon (multiply by 1.3), you can very easily just add 4.25 to the attack tier and compare the new difference.

Super effective? No need to multiply, just add 7.27.

3. Whereas an Attack Calculator you need to know the defending and attacking pokemon in advance (to plug in the numbers or in MetalKid's calculator... you need to select them from a list), the Defense Tiers allow you to compare pokemon you've never considered before.

EDIT: Oh, and finally: be free to round. There are 2 decimal places because that is when things get absurdly accurate (I'm talking like 0.1% here). But taking it to 1 decimal place will give you an error margin of only 1%, and rounding to a whole number gives you an error margin of 10%.

Quote:
Explosion's base power is effectively around 500 because it halves the opponent's Defense immediately before doing damage. Other than that, this is some very nice work.
I see. But that is easily simulated adding 7.27 to the attack tier (or subtracting 7.27 from their defense tier) :-) I'll edit that note in however.

Wow, this is quite impressive.. When I looked at these topics I was really confused up until now..

One thing that would be useful, is to include pokemon with max HP but not max special defense or Def..

Have a nice day.

You forgot SelfDestruct, which has 400 Base Power.

Yes, I know the only things that don't get Boom but do get Selfdestruct these days are Snorlax and Mewtwo, but its there.

The list would have gotten unimaginably big... but I do have such a list. Its just tucked away so that it wouldn't scare away people.

Aighty. Put Self-Destruct in. Interesting... only 2.4 tiers difference in power... while the attack difference in Snorelax and Smeargle is 9 tiers. Self-Destruct Snorelax > Explosion Smeargle.

Might want to add an entry for Hidden Power in the attacks. Just keep it to 70 BP to keep it simple, no sense messing around with other strengths.

I have seen both these threads and I'm sticking with the damage calculator rather than reading all that, considering it IS much more precise I don't see a downside

Speed. Once you have done this a few times, you will be able to do damage calculations in your head, without even looking at the chart (once you have the tier list and the other variables memorized).

Is it really necessary to memorize it? (Other than for Gamestop tournaments; do they even have those, anymore?) You could just have the chart handy so you can quickly search it when you need it.

Or, if you can gain a good-enough understanding of how the tiers work, you could create an Excel spreadsheet that would allow you to input different IV/EV spreads as well as the other modifiers in order to calculate Tiers. (I've done this.) Heck, you could even make a form so that all you have to do is put in your Pokemon/spread/modifiers, your opponent's Pokemon/spread/modifiers, and the program would display an OHKO, 2HKO, or however many hits it would take to KO the Pokemon. (Hm, I should get onto that when I have the time. That sounds really useful.)

Attack tiers are not designed for 1 v 1 KO calculations. They are designed to replace MASS damage calculations.

For example, I calculate Specsmence's Attack Tier. 60.49 + 51.85 + 4.25 + 4.25 - 2.65 + 1 == 118.19. So every pokemon with Sp. Def. Tier 118.19 and below is OHKOed by Specsmence's Draco Meteor.

(60.49 is Salamence's base Atk. Tier, 51.85 is Draco Meteor's power, 4.25 is Stab and specs, 2.65 is the guarenteed OHKO, and 1 is for the +nature)

But wait... Lets say I'd like to see what Life Orb would do instead, and I'd like to see who is OHKOed by Specs that Life Orb doesn't OHKO.

All I have to do is subtract 4.25 (specs) and add life orb (2.75) and volia. New Attack tier is 116.69. And all pokemon between 116.69 and 118.19 on this list is OHKOed by Specsmence, but not by Life-Orb salamence.

This is a system for Mass damage calculations. Not one at a time calculations. Anyway, it takes about the same amount of time to run a attack tier calculation as a single calculation on Metakid's (remember, control-f is your friend). Just there is so much information... EVs, which pokemon, which attack, +nature, -nature, etc. etc.

And I can modify this over and over very quickly. I can subtract 1 to see what Timid Specsmence can do, I can add 1.4 to see where Stealth Rocks / Layer 1 of spikes puts me. I can add 7.27 to see how it is if I manage to baton pass nasty plot to Salamence, etc. etc.

Memorize the modifiers, like 4.25 for 1.5x bonuses, 1 for nature changes, 7.27 for 2x bonuses, and 2.75 for life orb. If you got those down, a single attack tier will tell you a hell of a lot about a pokemon's relative attack power and you can best decide for yourself what kind of pokemon you want.

No offense, Dragontamer, but I find them more useful for quick 1-on-1 KO calculations (quicker than any online one, mind you) than for mass calculations. I mean, I don't see the benefit of memorizing everything outweighing the time lost in doing so. After all, the battles ARE 1-on-1, not against mass Pokemon at the same time. Your intentions of using the figures actually end up being more useful in teambuilding than in individual battles. (And this is coming from someone who completed calculus in high school, mind you.)

Cool, good to know some people can use these faster than Online calculators :-)

No offense taken. I'm just surprised that someone would use the Attack tiers like that. I've always used them to compare Life Orb vs Choice Band and other choices like that. Also, I memorize the attack power of specific pokemon (like SpecsMence Draco Meteor) so I can quickly say "Oh, that pokemon may have good Sp. Def tier, but it isn't enough", etc. etc.

I guess we all can use these however we want :-p But thats how I use them anyway, and you're all welcome to use them however you wish.

Not necessarily memorized, but once one has used this a couple times, I would assume you would know the SpAtk tier of Salamance and the SpDef of Blissey. It's not like you're going to go out and memorize what the tier of LO Wingull is. You would probably have the defense and attack tiers memorized of your own pokemon. In battle, you would look of the tiers of the pokemon you're facing. So, you can probably quickly figure out, "Okay, so if it's SpecsMence, this and that are KO'ed, but if its LO, this survives. And if it uses a different attack, then they also survive."

I think this will make a great tool to those who use it, and not just in team building.

First off, let me say how much help these are, especially during Team Building.
now with that out of the way, I wanted to mention how in the defensive tiers, you mention a specific formula to get the defensive tier. This was:
(log(1.1(HP x [Sp]Def))/0.041392685)+-multipliers= Tier
Now, this is easily done on a caculator without any kind of list, assuming you know the pokemon your working with.
Unfortunately, when working with the Attack tiers, there is no such equation: there's only a list where we pick what we're looking for and use it. This is fine, but I do most of my team building during school, where this list is not available to me: is there a way to calculate these tiers, like the defensive ones, assuming all you had was the attack of the pokemon, a single move, and a calculator?
It would help me a lot. I can understand if it's too big to use in the introduction, as it may "scare people off" as you've mentioned before.

Falcon Punch destroys the universe :D

Actually, the formula is (log_1.1(HP x [Sp]Def))+-multipliers= Tier. However, most calculators only have log_10 on it but no log_1.1 (the Windows XP calculator is log_10 by default), so 0.041392685 is about equal to log_10(1.1). The reason for this is that log(X) / log(1.1) == log_1.1(X), the change of base formula.

Thus, if you simply do log(hp*def) / log(1.1) == log(hp*def) / .041392685, you'll get the defense tier.

As for the attack formula, its the same exact thing:

log1.1(attack * base power) - magic number +/- multipliers. The Magic Number is necessary, but aside from that all calculations done with attack tiers are equivalent to defense tiers. Once you know one system, the other system is compatible.

Similarly to defense tiers, to get the attack calculator on a typical calculator, do log(attack * base power) / log(1.1) - magic number == log(attack * base power) / .041392685 - magic number.

Remember to use the actual stat, and not the base. Aside from that, good luck.

I attempted to make an introduction to attack tiers from a different perspective. I step through each step here, to answer the question "For Whom does Fire Blast OHKO that Flamethrower doesn't for a Sp. Atk based Infernape?"
