Getting Connected - Orange Islands IRC and Google+

Do you read the XY discussion thread for hours on end? Do you refresh it obsessively, hoping to discover some new tidbit of information? Have your posts ever been infracted or deleted because they were "off topic"?

If so, #orangeislands is the place for you! Most of Smogon's discussion happens behind the scenes on IRC. In fact, most of Orange Islands' regulars frequent our IRC channel, where you are free to theorymon new Pokémon, discuss all your hopes and dreams for XY, and get all the off-topic craziness out of your system. Remember, IRC is the place for discussing anything that pops into your head, not the XY thread!

This public service announcement has been brought to you courtesy of the joint efforts of Stellar and Orange Islands up-and-comer, shockwave527. I'd like to extend a special thanks to him for his help in bridging the growing gap between XY thread regulars and the rest of OI.

In the spirit of community, we are going to try something new here in the Orange Islands!

One of the IRC channel's favorite things to do is to play through games together, whether casually or competitively (speed runs, nuzlockes, etc.). To facilitate this, we have launched a Google+ community. Over the next few weeks, we hope to host a number of group play-throughs and competitions using Google Hangout. There are two extremely cool ways you can get in on the fun:

Play along with us! Share your screen so others can watch as you play. The competition grows more fierce when you can keep an eye on the other players!
Sit back and watch! If you don't feel like playing, or just love watching Let's Plays, this is the place to be. You will be able to track the progress of each of the participants.

To join the group, all you have to do is click the following link and request membership. I will post notices about upcoming group play-throughs on the community notice board and here on the Orange Islands forum. As always, join #orangeislands for real-time Pokémon games chat. It's what all the cool kids are doing.

We'll be running our first offical Google+ Hangout session on May 4th (due to differing timezones it is either today or tomorrow).

We'll be playing a Pokemon Sapphire Speedrun with no starters! This means as soon as you can catch a pokemon that is not your starter, you must catch it and get rid of your starter. The person who defeats the Elite 4 with the shortest playtime wins! Not only can you participate, but it is also fun to spectate because Google+ allows everyone to share their screen at once, allowing you to keep up to date on the action.

Good luck to all who plan to participate! It's gonna be a fun time.

Mekkah and I are currently playing if anyone wants to join in or watch. All you have to do is become a part of the Google+ community and click the hangout in the bottom right!

It was so much fun yesterday! Haha. Up at like half 11 just because it was so much fun. :P

Anyway, thoughts on keeping open a hangout of just random stuff? IDK, seems like a good idea simply for when we don't have those official hang-outs but still want to get together as a community. Just have anyone keep it open or start it if it finishes.

Anyone who joins the group can start a hangout/join the current hangout and stream whatever game you are currently playing. You don't need to wait for a group playthrough. Just alert #orangeislands that you are playing, and I'm sure people will watch and comment.

It was pretty fun, although on my computer I lagged like no other >_> I'll try to find a way to fix it before the next time.

The chat was fun at least, and it was cool learning everybody's real names. o3o

I love this G+ hangout feature. As some of you are aware, I've decided to start using it in place of traditional Scramble updates. If you're in IRC with me keep an eye out for me to announce that I'm going to start playing whatever scramble I'm doing, it's a load of fun to get together and play like that!

Google+ Hang outs are pretty awesome. Jimera0 and I sat on it for like three hours, he streamed a Pokemon Yellow randomizer while I corrupted Pokemon Crystal, Yellow, and Silver. Between starting with Caterpies and semi satanic Pikachus, there were many laughs to be had. I highly suggest that if you're playing through something, you hop on a hangout, maybe with someone else streaming to complement it. The fun is amplified tenfold.

Whenever we want to, really. Usually if there is one we announce it on the IRC.

Also, this is pretty late but I fixed my lag problem (like a week ago lol)

Anyhow, these are a ton of fun! It was great meeting most of you, and so many fun new inside jokes that nobody will get...like Jimera's title and my avatar...
