After Magby is done trying to cast magic with the one random stick here, he uses Confuse Ray on Axew confusing him slightly. Axew fights through his confusion to Taunt magby into a frenzy.

Axew fails to concentrate enough to use Barrier, Axew uses this opening to drill magby with a Dig!

Magby uses superior brain power to throw Axew for a loop with Psychic, Even lowering his Special Defense! Axew responds with another Dig!

(By my calcs, Psychic should have done 11 damage, because its BAP is weird: [(6+2)+3] = 11; Dig should have done 17: [8+3]*1.5 = 16.5)
