Default (Un)Official Smogon University PO Stats -- August 2011

Heya, folks.

So, as I understand it, the program that automatically generated usage stats for the Smogon PO server had some issues a while back (correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it partially responsible for the Great Smogon Outage of July 2011?). In any case, I contacted Blue Kirby and offered to help out with compiling the usage stats for August.

Basically, the raw data consists entirely of battle logs. If you've ever actually LOOKED at a PO battle log, you can see why this would be less than ideal. For starters, only the pokemon that actually appeared in the battle show up in the logs. Secondly, movesets, EV spreads, etc. are impossible to determine, by and large, making more detailed stats, like the kind that can be found on the PO webpage, impossible to generate. Finally, HTML battle logs aren't exactly the ideal format for trying to extract usage information.

But I made do.

Anyway, enough horn-tooting. First off, some disclaimers: (1) Until a mod says otherwise, these stats are UNOFFICIAL. This is good because (2) I can't say with 100% certainty that my scripts are doing everything correctly. I *can* say that everything looks good as far as I can tell (I wouldn't be posting this otherwise), but I've made some mistakes in the past. But hey, that's what a beta period is for. IF YOU SEE SOMETHING THAT LOOKS WRONG OR IS OBVIOUSLY WRONG, SAY SOMETHING, AND I'LL LOOK INTO IT. Finally, (3) it's been three months, and I know people are anxious for a new OU/UU cutoff, but keep in mind, THESE STATS ALONE DO NOT DETERMINE THE NEW OU/UU CUTOFF. It will be based on the COMBINED stats for the past THREE months, and I imagine this won't happen until this month's stats are finalized. There are many things that can be tweaked, and it's not at all clear that the way I did things is the right way.

Phew.

Okay, then. With that out of the way, I present to you my unofficial usage stats for August 2011 (plus July 31). Note that, as per this post, only battles that were at least six turns long were counted in order to weed out early forfeits, which would skew the stats in favor of leads.

Now some of my own observations.
  1. With the exception of OU and Ubers, either there were a lot of early forfeits, there's something wrong with my scripts or people just WERE NOT ON the Smogon server as much as they were in June. I'm seeing about HALF as many battles in the UU, RU and LC tiers for August.
  2. Especially in Little Cup, you can see people being jerks and abusing the fact that the Smogon banlist was down for a few days. Luckily, it doesn't appear these bad eggs ruined it for the rest of us (in terms of usage rankings), since they're mostly (all?) towards the bottom of the list.
  3. T-tar is the undisputed king of OU, and the metagame has gotten a bit more centralized. For August, only 44 pokemon had usage above 3.4%. In June it was 54.

Mind if I ask this, but is it possible for you to make a quick program to align the percentage and number of times used numbers? Because if not, its quite annoying to look at, but don't worrry your self with manually fixing it, because I volunteer to do it. I have nothing better to do. I just want to make sure it can't be easily done before wasting hours of my life.

Wow, it it continues at this rate, Darmanitan, Swampert, Metagross, Tornadus, Hippowdon, Chandelure, Venusaur, and Mienshoa are all going to UU.

I'llook into this ful once I get te chance, but first I must hank you for your work on all of this. We all appreciate it.

According to your information, the OU cutoff ends at mamoswine (since the OU cutoff for pokemon in the tier is 3.7% iirc). If I'm right, then say hello to UU lucario and mamoswine guys.

Ugh, Metagross and Hippowdon being in UU is a depressing thought. They are both excellent pokes with excellent base stats and deserve much more respect (though I suppose they'd make the UU meta more fun :). Other than that section of OU, everything seems in line, other than Celebi and Gastrodon skyrocketing in usage. Also, Whimsicott and Machamp look like they are almost certainly going to be dropped UU, being even lower than Donphan and Jolteon in usage.

IIRC the cutoff is based off of combined stats over THREE months.

and @Scarfwynaut, if you'd like to do that for me, that would be AWESOME. It appears the way it is because it's a tsv (tab-separated values). Easy for importing into excel or whatnot.

Metagross being under 3.5% is very surprising. I think he'll rise back up soon enough, he has amazing stat distribution and power. No way he'll drop down to UU.

well like the OP said this only counts battles that had 6 turns at least and not every battle used for this had all the members of each side used.

so the usage is gonna be off by a lot i would think for the lesser used mons

Rotom-W at #2 is really something. Not saying it's not good, but it doesn't strike you as having any particularly amazing characteristics while plenty of mons with base stats of 125+ or more distinguishing abilities (though levitate is still an top tier ability) reside below it. Guess it's just very solid in a metagame that works to its favor.

Also, Haxorus on the rise.

Of course these stats seem "skewed", they were collected differently than April, May and DPPt usage stats.
