Introduction

Hey everyone I'm HardCore and I would like to introduce everyone to an idea of mine called Pokémon Bash Sessions. If you're a fan of theorymoning, predicting wins, and having deep conversations about the metagame then this is the tournament for you! This event was created around the concept of sportscasters and Sports fans coming together and discussing who will be the winner of a sports match! Why not do it with Pokémon too! This tournament is really more of a writing competition to see who can support their side with the most finesse, and eloquence while still writing off of experience!

How It Works:

Each contestent will have to pick a side to support then write a paragraph (5-10 sentences) that eloquently convince people that the Pokémon team or Pokémon is either going to win or is most effective in OU. For the final round competitors can have a maximum of two 5-10 sentence paragraphs, because whole teams will be used in the final round!
* There will only be a team match ups in the final round or as much as the tournament director wishes.*

After you have written, checked, and submitted your paragraphs to me or other judges in private messages(for this small scale tournament I will be the only judge) then it will be rated on a scale of 1-10. Once everyone has submitted there paragraphs judges will post the paragraphs here with the ratings and there notes. Judge Notes simply point out errors or positive creative writing skills that they like. If you are wondering why you lost that round or got a great rating then refer to these notes. Positive things that will impress the judges may include damage calculations, extremely well worded sentences, and sophisticated vocabulary that is perfectly used. Errors will include misspells, punctuation errors, bad language, run on sentences, etc.
*Remember to keep your writing as real as possible. We want to see good grammar and great writing, but remember it's all about quality not quantity. So you don't need a ton of calculations or big words or else it just looks like you're trying too hard.*

Eliminations:
Eliminations will happen just like in a normal tournament. Half of the contestants will be eliminated each round until there is a top 2-8 depending on the amount of contestants. Each round will have a different two Pokémon or Pokémon Teams. Based on the amount of people who are in the successful half of each round will determine what Pokémon wins the argument. It's like defending someone in court whether they are guilty or not you must defend your client. So feel free to pick and support which ever Pokémon or team you wish! The winner of the tournament will be decided by which team in the final round wins an actual best of three battle. The battlers will be either the finalist or a battler they choose to represent them!

Example: Scizor vs Hitmontop in OU. We all know that Scizor is better in OU than Hitmontop, but if I were to create a better written argument with strong points that over look Hitmontop's disadvantages in the metagame then I could win vs another writer in the competition who chose Scizor.
* Unlike the Pokémon vs Pokémon rounds the final team round will have teams that are fairly well matched up against each other!

Scizor vs Hitmontop in OU Example

Scizor and Hitmontop are both very dedicated priority Pokémon and can both be used in Ou effectively. I think that Scizor is much better in Ou for simple reasons. The first main reason is that he has more attack than hitmontop by far and the second main reason would be that his typing allows him to take more hits than hitmontop in OU. I'd much rather have a Pokémon with Uturn and SD than having Hitmontop damage himself with LO + Fake out and Rapid spin. Scizor hasn't just been number 1 in OU before for no reason. Hitmontop isn't even OU so it can't even compare.

This is an example of someone who just rushed and wrote a short paragraph about how superior Scizor is, but in order to win you must be very thorough. It is smart to utilize all or almost all of the sentences you can. It's also smart to check your grammar and capitalize everything appropriately. In this example there isn't anything eloquent about the way the paragraph is written. The writer could have easily combined a couple of his statements by using subjunctive clauses and compound complex sentences. Quality is better than quantity, but with many of the subjects there will be plenty to write. Don't forget basic English skills like opening sentence, details, and closing sentence for paragraphs! If I were to judge this paragraph the writer would receive between a 3 and a 5.

Hitmontop in Ou example

Although Hitmontop is in the Underused tier he can be very viable in the OU metagame as well. Several factors make Technician Hitmontop very powerful in the Overused tier and can even make him more viable in certain situations than Scizor. I'll be basing most of my contents on the standard Adamant Life Orb Technician Hitmontop, which will have the following moves: Fake Out, Mach Punch, Sucker Punch, and Close Combat. Fake Out on Hitmontop not only allows the battler to be able to predict the opponents items better by eliminating Leftovers immediately in all circumstances it also delivers a decent amount of damage that can also lead to an extra 6.25%, 12.5%, and even more due to damaging weather effects and statuses. Mach Punch is a great stabbed Technician boosted move for Hitmontop, because it allows Hitmontop to deal priority damage to Pokémon like Heatran and Magnezone, which would usually force Scizor out. Close Combat is much more powerful than Scizor's Super Power due to a large stab, and partnered with Sucker Punch and Mach punch has much better coverage than just being limited to a Steel or Normal typed priority move. Hitmontop has great special defense which will allow it to combat non resisting Pokémon in rain much better than Scizor. Hitmontop can also even run Rapid Spin, Pursuit, Bullet Punch, Stone Edge, and Low Sweep on this innovative set, which allows the set to not be as limited as Scizor is in his Choice Band and Life Orb Sets. Hitmontop is able to spread much more damage onto a team than Scizor is based on experience and has great potential in OU to be a late game sweeper and a Pokémon that can chip away at Pokémon that would other wise prove to be quit bulky. For an Underused Pokémon Hitmontop's versatility and spinning capability in the Overused tier certainly can not be overlooked!

This is an example of a near perfect argument for a competition like this. Although we know Scizor is still better than Hitmontop in OU you could definitely persuade someone with a well written paragraph like this. This paragraph contains proper capitalizations, a formal level of diction, and many factors that should be listed that are on Hitmontop's side. It isn't just bashing Scizor the whole way through, but listing what Hitmontop can do that Scizor can not without talking about Hitmontop's disadvantages in the OU metagame. Lastly in this paragraph the writer used all 10 sentences and plenty of compound complex sentences to get enough information the paragraph. Based on the Judge a paragraph like this will be getting somewhere between a 8 and a 10. In the future Judges will be allowed to collaborate, so all the ratings won't be biased.

I'm probably going to sign up for this later depending on how much time I have, but one question immediately springs to mind. In many match-ups I could see one pokemon being the much better and thus easier to defend (and thus, more popular) option. This could result in way more people (or hypothetically everyone) writing in support of that pokemon. How will you deal with this? I might be missing something in the instructions, just thought I'd ask.

Kidogo in my example I told you how you could support either and still have potential to win. It's all about writing quality. The point is to be as persuasive as possible by overlooking their disadvantages. As the runner of the tournament I will make sure every match up is fair enough for people to pick either of the Pokemon easily. After checking for obvious grammar corrections I will check and see who persuades me to use the Pokemon the most. So I encourage everyone to pick either of the Pokemon regardless of their tier. While judging the 5 of 8 that entered I had to crucially analyse each essay, which was not so much of a challenge as it was an experience. Celebi has many clear advantages over Mew. They both possess the same stats, with great bulk on both sides and decent offenses, as well as a solid base 100 in Speed. However, Celebi can abuse its offenses with Nasty Plot and two excellent STABs in Giga Drain and Psychic, allowing it recovery just by attacking and giving great coverage. Celebi is resistant to Water- and Electric-type moves, which is huge in the current metagame that is dominated by powerful Water-type attackers and Thunders from the like of Thundurus-T, usually under rain. Celebi also has Natural Cure, which allows it to easily switch out and cure itself of any harmful status problems, giving defensive sets a major advantage over Mew. In addition, Celebi has access to Leaf Storm, giving it a nuke of a STAB move whereas Mew only has the average Psychic. While Mew may have a superior movepool, it has trouble doing any one thing effectively due to many of its options being outclassed by other Psychic-types, such as Calm Mind by Reuniclus and Celebi itself, as well as Baton Pass by users of SmashPass like Smeargle and Gorebyss, and even competes with Celebi for a teamslot as a Nasty Plot sweeper. While Mew is the jack of all trades and the master of none, Celebi is the jack of few trades and the master of many, being able to fill any role it wants to and effectively. Celebi can be a devastating Nasty Plot sweeper, an excellent special attacker with Choice Specs or Life Orb that can fit great in a VoltTurn core due to its Water-type resistance, a hard-to-break wall, a revenge killer, or even a combination of its offensive and defensive capabilities with its signature Tinkerbell set. It is almost impossible to guess what Celebi will do when it comes out on the field, and that is its main advantage over Mew, which is relegated to either support or Baton Pass roles in most cases, giving Celebi the nod over Mew for most any team.

I really like this paragraph more than most. It has a great flow and a great level of diction. I even enjoyed the way you added the phrase, “Celebi is the jack of few trades and the master of many.” You explain how Celebi is better than Mew and several ways that are valid. What I didn’t like is how you refer to Grass and Psychic as good stabs. Instead I would have written they make great stabs when partnered with moves like Earth Power and Hidden Power Fire. Teamslot was your only typo, which isn’t too bad. All around you were down to earth and used great phrases and colorful word choices, which made your work really stand out to me.

Celebi has been a member of the OU metagame for a long time; and for good reasons too. The first reason being that Celebi brings with it resistances to six of the most common attacking types in the current metagame; Water, Grass, Electric, Ground, Fighting and Psychic. Compared to the puny total of two resistances belonging to its pink cousin Mew, it is not hard to see why Celebi is often regarded as the better pick in almost all OU teams.The above resistances are further enhanced by its most sought after ability Natural Cure, enabling it to dispel any status it may have acquired during its stay by switching out, as well as stunning base 100 stats across the board,*leading to many different routes to take when choosing a set. Despite having a shallower movepool in comparison to Mew, Celebi has exactly what it needs to get the job done. This is not to say Celebi is a one-dimensional Pokemon however, it's quite the opposite; with a plethora of supportive, defensive and offensive options; guessing this Pokemon's set is easier said than done. If taking an offensive route, Celebi has access to Nasty Plot; considered by most to be the Holy Grail of special boosting moves (bar the mega-super-ultra rare Tail Glow, belonging to a whopping two Pokemon), as well as a wide range of coverage moves such as Giga Drain, Leaf Storm, Psychic, Earth Power, Hidden Power, Shadow Ball and U-Turn. Thanks to its well rounded offensive stats Celebi is able to use many different items, ranging from Choice Specs and Scarf to boost its already great stats to ludicrous levels, to the simple Leftovers to give it extra longevity whilst it attempts a sweep. If taking a more clerical role, Celebi brings with it moves such as Thunder Wave, Heal Bell, Toxic, Leech Seed, Light Screen, Reflect, Perish Song and Recover; as you can see, the possibilities are almost endless when it comes to choosing a set, making it very difficult to find a consistent counter. For such a cute looking Pokemon, this mean, green killing machine is not one to be taken lightly.*

With this paragraph you really added a lot of light to the decision between the two Pokemon in this round. You showed me just how effective Celebi could be and used word choices and phrases that weren’t amazing, but did add enough color to make your paragraph stand out. You did well for the first round and I can’t wait for your results in the next round.

Introducing Mew, a very underrated Pokemon in the current OU Metagame. Mew can perform a plethora of viable sets, such as Stallbreaker, Baton Pass, Nasty Plot, Swords Dance and many others. In fact, Mew's options are not just limited to these sets, given Mew's fantastic offensive and defensive movepool and great 100 base stats all across the board, the options are virtually endless as Mew has no boundaries with it's diversity. Unlike Celebi, Mew is pure Psychic type, this means that Mew does not share the additional Fire, Flying and Ice weaknesses Celebi does, as well as no quad weakness to Bug. The fact Mew can perform so many different roles means it is a great member for any team. On offensive teams it can form as a stat booster, and sweep or Baton Pass the boosts out to another team member. On more defensively inclined teams, Mew has the ability to cripple common members of stall teams, such as Ferrothorn, Forretress, Blissey, Skarmory, Amoonguss, Jellicent, Dragonite, Latias and many more. While Celebi may have access to Natural Cure, Mew has access to Synchronize, arguably a better ability in it's own right. It makes your opponent think twice about using Toxic or Thunder Wave against Mew, as they themselves will be inflicted with the same status. A lot of common teams have problems with Mew. Sporting great natural bulk and reliable recovery, many teams lack a way to actually deal with it. For example, let us look at the top 10 most common Pokemon in the Metagame right now. For this instance, I will be taking the case of Defensive Celebi and Stallbreaker Mew, two Pokemon that perform similar defensive roles.

Unfortunately you just fell under the bar. The amount of facts you listed could lead anyone just starting off with Pokemon to believe that Mew is better than Celebi, but you didn’t use a variety of vocabulary or phrases. You didn’t fully use up your 10 sentences, so with the extra information you sent me I counted it as two convincing sentences. That was unfortunately slightly against you because 5-10 sentences is the limit. You did great and I want to see you fix those things in R2. I like the screens and think they will help you save space in the future of this competition.

While Mew may seem to have the edge over Celebi simply because it has a bigger movepool, there are a few unique characteristics that let Celebi stand out over Mew. First of all, Celebi has a Grass typing alongside his Psychic typing. While it does give Celebi a whopping 7 weaknesses, this typing also gives Celebi two STABs to put offensive pressure on the Rock, Ground, and Water-type Pokemon that run rampant in OU in addition the Fighting and Poison-types that Mew can deal with, as well as resisting common Water and Ground-type moves like Earthquake and Scald. Due to this, it can pull off an effective offensive set due to great set up moves such as Nasty Plot and Calm Mind and having two useful STABs, whilst Mew has to rely on more coverage instead of two STABs. Secondly, Celebi has some key moves that Mew does not have. Easily the most important is Leaf Storm, an all-powerful STAB move that so many Pokemon in general would die to have, including Mew, allowing Celebi to pull off more effective Choice sets. The other moves are incredibly useful support moves that are uncommon in OU: Heal Bell, Perish Song, and Healing Wish, which combine together with Celebi’s other great support moves like Thunder Wave to form a very good support set. He can also combine his support and offensive capabilities to pull off his infamous Tinker Bell set. Lastly, Celebi has an ability that is easily superior to Mew, with Mew having Synchronize which gives the opponent’s Pokemon the status they inflicted onto Mew, whereas Celebi has Natural Cure which allows it to outright cure itself of status by switching, thus preventing Celebi from being permanently crippled by status unlike Mew. In conclusion, due to having a few unique characteristics, Celebi is able to stand out over Mew in OU.

Your paragraph mainly focused on Celebi’s versatility and unique characteristics, which was fine and dandy, but it was too dull and too short in my opinion. It’s like you have the information without the passion. You need a little something extra you know? Jimbon had his pictures along with plenty of details while PapaBearAds and Pokemon0078 had their colorful word choices. I can tell you have potential so lets see it.

Sorry for the tardiness of these paragraphs, I've been on vacation for the past week and didn't have access to my computer. I'll admit the quality of this work isn't top tier but it's still my entry. Hopefully I'll have more than a few minutes to write for round 2.

R1:

When I look at Celebi and Mew the first thing that comes to mind is versatility. These outstanding pokemon sport a legendary 600 BST and pack amazing movepools. Mew is often regarded as the most versatile pokemon in the game, its movepool is as deep as the pacific ocean and its unpredictability can be its most deadly factor. A similar statement could be made about Celebi, however one commonly overlooked detail regarding Celebi is that all of the sets Celebi can perform it performs at the highest level. Mew may be able to function as a supporter, set-up sweeper, and baton passer however it is far from the best at fulfilling all 3 roles. Mew is a versatile pokemon but it is outclassed as a sweeper by Azelf, Alakazam, Reuniclus, and Espeon. The latter also performs a baton passing role far better than Mew.The only role Mew can perform well in the overused metagame without being outclassed is a stall breaking set, this being said stall is one of the most difficult team archetypes to build and it is even harder to achieve success with it, needless to say this puts a stall breaker very low on the priority list when teambuilding. Mew truly is a “Jack of All Trades and Master of None.”

Celebi on the other hand can perform very well in every role it commonly plays. Celebi has the type coverage to make it a very threatening set-up sweeper, it packs very handy type resists which aid it to be able to run more defense oriented sets, it can slap on a choice item for some extra power or speed, and most notably it can combine both supporting qualities and offensive presence to become an unpredictable threat simply known as “Tinkerbell.” Celebi also sports a 140 Base Power STAB move something that Mew can only wish for. Celebi also has better niches to fill as it can play a key role in a volt turn core and it traditionally fits into teams better with its additional Grass typing. Celebi has everything going for it and there is no doubt in my mind that when faced with a decision between Mew and Celebi that Celebi will always have my vote.

Unfortunately you missed the point of the competition. I hope it wasn’t due to my instructions. You contradicted yourself several times and went over the 10 sentence limit. You were not supposed to defend both Pokemon and you were too contradicting. You also failed to do a few minor things that were covered in the links I provided. Sorry.

The R2 thread should be up shortly, but I'm being called in for a job and I'm really trying to get it up! At worst it will be up between 5-8 pm est today. However I won't leave you all in the dark R2's next subject will be the one that plenty of people have been talking about and should still have much to say! Scizor VS Genesect in BW2 OU!!!!!In the R2 thread which will be up today I will post major flaws and what I'm now looking for in the tournament now that I have read paragraphs from the first round. For now just remember keep it formal along with color, 1-3 photos, and stats! I saw no calculations in the last round!
