hi everyone, i created an account here to find out about a tournament or something about super smash bros brawl, i think on january 11th 2013, i dont know where this tournament is, what the rules are or anything like that, i really think im a gifted player in brawl and i never been in a tournament before always wanted to be in one but never new they even held them, please post anything that will help me understand this stuff being held on january 11th, please be specific!i dont want to miss this tournament!!(im only 17 by the way and live in philadelphia...)

Well that's great and all, but this isn't a Brawl forum. This is a forum for competitive Pokémon battling. I don't think anyone here knows what that would be.

Were you looking at this thread, perhaps? While that is primarily a SSB tournament, we're focusing on the Pokémon part of it here.

Is it possible for Dragonite to run a mix set that doesn't rely on rain dance? I'd like to try that cause i don't wanna be a slave to the weather.

I just feel like my DD nite is kinda useless since half the time I don't even get to Dragon Dance with him.

I know the general opinion is that Salamence does it better, but Dragonite does have bulk on his side which i use to my advantage.

I did try this set once, but it didn't work so well under my battling style.

Dragonite is a good user of DD, when it can get the move off, more times than not i'm forced to send mine in early due to weather or Stealth Rock being involved, and end up going after the enemy with Outrage off the bat,so it just feels to me like Dragon Dance is useless with the way I play.

Now I know what your thinking. "Choice Band" Tried that too, Scizor is the only pokemon I feel comfortable putting a Band on because it feels right at home on him, Dragonite has more versitilty to use, and to me doesn't need to be locked down.

Outrage/Dragon Claw and Extremespeed are his best two moves he's got, it's the other two I wish I could swap for something else.

there's gotta be a way to use Dragonite as a mixer without Rain Dance being a factor, again I know Salamence probably does the job better, but I like Dragonite's bulk.

See, there's the problem. I love Dragonite more than most people (and by that I mean that I like Dragonite more than most people do. But I also mean that I like Dragonite more than I like most people [please someone get that reference]), he's great at what he does: bulky DD, Band, rain tank, parashuffler, etc. As I'm sure you know, Pokemon each have their own niches and roles, and it's important to recognize which ones have which. You aren't going to use Terrakion as a special sweeper, even though it gets Earth Power and Focus Blast. That just isn't his role. You say that you like Dragonite because of his bulk, and that's a great reason to like him, but his bulk doesn't warrant the use of a mixed set. Mixed sets are used for one reason: wall-breaking. Salamence does a better job at this because he has better offensive stats as well as a great ability in Moxie that eases his wall-breaking capabilities. Dragonite does have bulk, but so what? He has great attack and ok special attack. Salamence has great stats in both, and that allows him to fill the wall-breaker role and go mixed. There's no real point in making a mixed Dragonite set simply because Salamence will ALWAYS be better because he fits the role of wall-breaker better. You have to play each Pokemon to its advantages and realize when it's outclassed. I'm sorry :/ I hope I helped somewhat, though I didn't really give you what you were looking for.

you should not be running roost on mixnites (you won't find time to use it and you're better off just attacking) and you should be running life orb. that makes it highly unlikely that your scales are going to hold up, if at all. you're also significantly slower and running a -def or -sdef nature, further compromising your bulk so you will have difficulty taking hits. thus most arguments of "more bulk" are irrelevant. in fact mence's intimidate is arguably a more useful ability for this sort of set than multiscale would be.

there is only one good reason to run dragonite over salamence in this role (besides "surprise factor"), and that's extremespeed. so something like fire blast/outrage/extremespeed/___ could work. but then you'd be better off running cb nite with fire punch, so there's still really no long term advantage to running dnite in a mixed wallbreaking role. just run a standard mixmence and be done with it.

No. Slowbro is far too slow for this to work, and even so why would you use Curse when there's... (why am I saying this) Iron Defense (please don't use either)? Not to mention you get walled hard by Jellicent, Toxicroak, Vaporeon, etc.

Slowbro is at it's best when it is used as a pivot, and usually it doesn't want to stay in for more than a few turns (unless the opponent is silly enough to stay in with their poke that slowbro is hardwalling). Additionally this set is hilariously vulnerable to toxic, taunt, and just being set up on in general. In regards to countering rain, Slowbro is a poor choice. Most of what rain throws out comes from the special side where slowbro is more designed to tank physical hits. Thunder destroys it. Tornadus-T destroys it. It loathes getting hit by toxic from bulkytoed or Tentacruel. Ferrothrorn sets up spikes (slowbro hates entry hazards) or leech seeds it. It can't really take Keldeo's Hydro Pumps in the rain either.

Slowbro likes to run Toxic or Thunder Wave to cripple many things that try to set up on it or to cripple a switch in. Slowbro also has a very nice selection of coverage moves that shouldn't be ignored either such as ice beam, flamethrower, fire blast, or even psychic/shock. In my experience, the fire move seems to be more predicted and ice beam is very unpredicted, and can net you a few surprise KO's and helps it check some very prominent threats depending on which you choose.

Go with Slowbro's strengths and you won't be disappointed. Using Slowbro to counter rain and you will be. Remember that Slowbro is an amazing physical wall that packs less than predictable status and coverage moves and is one of the few non steel types that can take a boosted outrage and do something back.

Sacaen is right, but if you try to sweep with your slowbro you can try TR on it with a spread of

This is a bit late, but you're best off using Draco Meteor / Fire Blast / Superpower / Extreme Speed > what alk said: Fire Blast / Outrage / ExtremeSpeed / ___ That way, you don't have rely on Outrage to get off a powerful attack. Superpower is used to hit Tyranitar, Heatran, and the blobs hard.

Use the following set:

Slowbro @ Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
Bold Nature
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Psychic
- Slack Off

Ice beam and scald are required to kill shit. Psychic is nice for Gyarados, Toxicroak, Cloyster, Conkeldurr. Slack off for active recovery. Flamethrower, thunderwave and toxic are inferior in my opinion, but they can be used.

Unfortunately Slowbro does little to rain, the best he can do is counter Toxicroak, burn Tentacruel, counter Gyarados, maybe take on the one random physical attacker they may have, and check Keldeo. If you want to "counter rain" I suggest you use a combination of Celebi / Amoonguss and Jirachi.

ok thanks for the information, but what Nature, ev spread and item go well with this set?

though perhaps there's also a way to fix the DD set i'm using as well?

I'd recommend same spread as Rain attacker- 72 Atk / 252 SpA / 180 Spe Mild. It lets you outspeed Magnezone- and max SpA gives you as much power as possible.

If that doesn't fit you, you can create a custom set- as Speed is what you should be considering first, and then your offenses. The best thing to do is select a pokemon that you need to outspeed- say Adamant Breloom- and then put the minimum amount of EV's in to outspeed it. Then, max an offensive stat- Atk/SpA- whichever is more important to you- and then stash the rest into the secondary attacking stat. Mixnite can lean towards both offenses fine, so it really depends on what you want to hit. If you don't run Outrage, it's probably not a good idea to run too much Atk evs, and likewise if you're only running Dmeteor/Fire blast for coverage then of course don't invest too heavily in SpA.

thanks for the help dudes, i'll be to look into all this, as I will other options as you pointed out till I see something I find what fits and works.

Edit: though on the DD set i'm worried mostly cause of Outrage locking me down all the time even if it is all powerful, but i don't know if Dragon claw can handle the job...

forgot about dmeteor/hurric, admittedly dnite has a lot of random options you can choose from. however hurric lends itself better to the bulky rain sets (usually hurric/thunder/dtail/roost with significant investment in bulk) and i don't really like your odds running it outside rain. dmeteor is actually what the mixnite sets used to use so yeah you could use that as your main stab. nevertheless you are still better off going with the usual 4 attacks mixmence that's on site, if a mixed wallbreaker is the role you want.

as for your ddnite... what exactly do you want to "fix" about it? bear in mind that dragon claw is a LOT weaker than outrage (+1 dclaw = +0 outrage, so it's effectively "one turn weaker"), but if sweeping with dnite is not a long term concern, you can sometimes justify dragon claw when you need to throw out a stab hit without locking yourself in (in a situation where you don't want to stay in and boost).

@psymoniscool: do not run boosting moves on slowbro unless you have an extremely good reason to run CM. you should not aim to use slowbro as a bulky sweeper - it simply does not fit the job and there are other better monoattacking water options (eg crocune)

You mean DDnite?

Well yeah like I said before sometimes I send it out first due to weather and going into Outrage off the bat might kill one pokemon but it won't get another due to the lock down factor.
