Default Official Smogon University Simulator Statistics — January 2013
Hello, ladies and gentlemen.

Big changes this month. In addition to the new tiers resulting from December's usage, we've decided to change the way we count our stats. Namely, we've moved to a weighted system which you can read all about in this thread (executive summary: if you're a good or decent player, your teams will be counted much as before, and pretty much equally to all other above-average players, but contributions to the stats by extremely inexperienced players and "tier trolls" will be minimized).

I've also made some changes to the moveset statistics (namely how Teammates are ranked), and I've also begun collecting data on our two Doubles formats.

The weighted team statistics is the best idea anyone's had in a long time. Good to see keldeo and Landorus-T rising a fair bit as well as our favourite psychic dragon. This definitely will lead to usage statistics representing what's good and what's not a little better. Props to whoever came up with it. Thanks again Antar for the monthly discussion fodder.

Some comments:
  • Randbats broke half a million battles this month, and OU is almost there (these stats would've been up hours ago if there hadn't been so many battles)
  • RU is up more than 40% from last month. Go RU!
  • I can't *believe* how active our two doubles metagames are: 33,600 VGC battles makes us TEN TIMES more active than PO's VGC 2013 ladder, and 16,494 Smogon Doubles battles means that--if this keeps up--I'll be giving you guys an "OU Doubles" list come April (and a dream of mine will finally be fulfilled!)
  • If you look into the moveset stats, you'll notice that I'm now lumping nature in with EV spread. This just seemed like a good idea.
  • You'll also notice that I'm ranking teammates not by percentage of time you see Pokemon Y with Pokemon X, but rather by the amount of time you see Pokemon Y with Pokemon X minus how often you see Pokemon Y generally. It's pretty meaningless to say that Scizor is a top teammate for, a third of the tier--it's a little bit more relevant to say that Politoed is 24% more common on teams with Ferrothorn than generally.
  • Each usage stat report gives the average weight per team. You can read more about weightings in this thread, but suffice it to say that this number gives you the fraction of the teams reported that were used by "better than average" players (note that I'm talking about teams, not players, so since good players play more, you'd expect this number to be above 50%). I talk a bit more on the subject here.
  • Moveset stats ALSO give the average weight of players using that Pokemon. You'll notice that in OU, Pikachu (line 11988) isn't used very often by good players.

Haxorus is getting close to UU range.

This is pretty scary, yet exciting. Would it be quickbanned if it dropped? UU had many powerful titans in the past (and it currently has some now), but we're talking about Haxorus here.

You really can't compare this month's usage statistics to previous months, since the old stats weren't weighted.

Nice to see another grass type in the OU Top 10 along with Ferrothorn (Breloom), although I still find him depressingly frail.

Expected the drop in kyurem-b, tbh all that power and bulk is largely wasted on him compared to other dragons with better typing and movepool. Althrough I still think he is pretty awesome if used correctly and I am more than happy to give the ice titian a spot on my teams.

Jirachi at number 4, well well well, pokemons second most annoying (remember skymin?) pokemon is finally seeing the use it deserves, the sheer amount of sets it can pull off is staggering and it dose not need an uber move pool like mew to do it either (through jirachi's move pool is grand), or uber stats (kyurem-b). Rarely do i fidn this pixe absent for my teams as it's very easy to find a role for it thats satisfies your teams needs.

Thanks again for the stats antar! This weighted system seems p. cool btw, really helped improve the RU stats a bit (although the amount of sandslash is still too damn high :s).

Pretty expected, Nidoqueen is pretty much the queen of RU right now, and one of the biggest threats in the tier, if she ends up being banned i wonder what'll end up taking her place :o.

Wat, hitmonlee's good, but not that good o_o. I mean sure lee is a pretty cool revenge killer and cleans up late game like no other, but there are a few things that make me think it doesnt deserve a spot in the top ten, like its insane fraility on the physical side and the fact that its walled completely by multiple top tier pokemon such as Slowking, Yxie, and Spiritomb.

Imo this should be a bit lower too, while it has a definite niche over the other fires in RU with its higher speed stat and shit, it struggles a bit in the current RU metagame due to the popularity of Slowking and priority, the Specs set is still golden, though.

Not surprised at this at all, given Druddigon's recent hype as an anti metagame threat with some people even comparing it to Nidoqueen in effectiveness. This is why we need weighed stats so badly, while Dusknoir is still too high in the stats imo even with the weighted system taken into account, a fair chunk of its usage has been shaved right off, looking at the rest of the stats Dusknoir might've shaved top 15 or even top 10 without weighed stats, and nobody wants that :s.

tbh i saw this coming from a mile away, while these Pokemon reached RU status courtesy of spam (although absol and cinccino would've moved up anyway iirc), they arent comparable to metang in the slightest. In fact, all 4 of them have a pretty significant and well defined niche in the RU tier and people are starting to see that now that they've moved up to RU.

another reason we need weighted stats, Munchlax, Hariyama, and Scolipede have all been hanging onto RU by the skin of their teeth courtesy mostly of people new to the tier thinking their good. Now that weighted stats have been introduced, NU finally has a chance to get some new toys this tier shift, and i know for a fact that scolipede would be pretty significant in NU. Scolipede is pretty surprising for me, though, because its actually pretty solid in this meta :x.

Whatevs sig. QC member for OU and Ubers, VM me for a look at your analysis. Just make sure it's good.

Also, if you want me to rate your team (OU/DW OU/Ubers), give me a VM. If I don't rate it, it's either 1) it's so shit it's too much trouble, 2) I'm busy, or 3) the team is fantastic and I have nothing I can suggest to you. You should be able to recognise which one.

OU and UU look pretty nice with the new system. I find it kinda cute that Suicune, Empoleon and Milotic are clumped together, with Azumarril just two below it. Blastoise showing he is the dominate water mon in UU!

Not to much time to comment right now on specific pokes, but I've got a suggestion for the stats. Often when looking at common EV sets you see a lot of 4/252/0/0/0/252 type spreads, with three different "sets", one for each position of the 4 EVs. These 4 EVs are not significant, and often one or more of these "sets" is lost in the other, or some other set is kicked into other to make room for the three clones. Would it be possible to ignore the difference between 0 and 4 EVs when putting sets together to get a better picture? (For example, all of those sets would just show as 0/252/0/0/0/252, in one category)

This would apply to common 252/0/252/0/0/0 type walls too, which would further compress the stats.

Its still applicable given that this is the new way the official metagames are being calculated. This shows new trends, even if they may be more vastly sporadic. Certainly not the best month for trying to deduce why one Pokemon had a difference in usage of something like 20 place (hint, things be weighted) but its still interesting to look at where things are heading for the enxt official tier change (I really hope Haxy goes insta-BL like Chancey should have).

And i know some people who use it anyway.

And i have to say, i love seeing things that the community has been begging for being applied here (Cloyster and Ambipom dropping, Keldeo ascending). This looks like a cool new system.
